Chennai: A woman was killed and her husband seriously injured when a govt bus rammed their vehicle near Kancheepuram early on Wednesday.The deceased was identified as Pinky, 30, wife of Praveen, 35, residents of the Arakkonam area in Ranipet district. Praveen, who works with a private company in Chennai, was injured in the accident. The couple was travelling by car to Bengaluru to spend the Christmas holidays with relatives.
The accident occurred near Vellaigate on the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway when a tanker lorry suddenly crossed the road. As Praveen attempted to slow down by applying the brakes, a Dharmapuri-bound govt bus, which was following the car at high speed, rammed into it.The car was crushed between the tanker lorry and the govt bus, leaving it completely mangled. Praveen managed to jump out of the car, but Pinky was trapped inside the wreckage and struggled for life. Passers-by alerted the police and fire and rescue services. Firefighters rushed to the spot and, with the help of the public, rescued Pinky after a struggle of nearly 30 minutes. She was rushed to the Kancheepuram Government Headquarters Hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries on the way.The accident led to heavy traffic congestion and chaos on the highway for over 30 minutes. The damaged vehicles—the tanker lorry and the govt bus—were later removed using cranes, and traffic was restored.The Kancheepuram police have registered a case and are investigating.
