Glenn Maxwell left out? Cricket Australia unveils 2026–27 central contracts list

    -

Cricket Australia (CA) has sent a definitive signal regarding the future of the national side, unveiling a 21-man central contract list for the 2026–27 season that prioritizes long-form stability over white-ball legacy. The most jarring headline from Wednesday’s announcement is the omission of veteran all-rounder. At 37, the star all-rounder appears to have reached the end of the road in the eyes of the national selectors, at least in terms of a guaranteed retainer.

The list comes ahead of a gruelling 12-month schedule featuring the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, with high-stakes series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, India, and the 150th Anniversary Test against England. Selection chair George Bailey emphasized that the 2026–27 roster is built around Test and multi-format players, leaving specialist white-ball stars on the periphery.

Did Glenn Maxwell miss out on Cricket Australia’s 2026–27 contracted players list?

Yes, Glenn Maxwell has officially been left out of the Cricket Australia central contract list for the 2026–27 cycle. While Maxwell remains one of the most decorated white-ball cricketers in Australian history, his exclusion follows a period of diminishing returns and a shift in his availability.

Maxwell retired from ODI cricket in June 2025 and has not donned the baggy green in a Test match since 2017. Furthermore, Australia’s underwhelming performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where they failed to progress past the group stage, has forced selectors to look toward the 2028 edition with a younger core.

Though Maxwell can still be selected for individual T20I tours or earn a contract upgrade through appearances, his absence from the initial 21-man list suggests he is no longer viewed as a cornerstone of the national setup. His recent struggles with form and a series of off-field disciplinary issues have likely accelerated this transition.

Big names omitted from the 2026–27 contracted list

Maxwell isn’t the only high-profile casualty in this year’s changing of the guard. Several established names and hyped youngsters have been sidelined in favour of red-ball specialists like Brendan Doggett and Jake Weatherald.

    • Sam Konstas: Perhaps the most shocking omission is the 20-year-old ‘generational talent.’ After a meteoric rise during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Konstas suffered a brutal slump, averaging just 16.30 over his last nine Test innings.
    • Jhye Richardson: Despite his undisputed skill, Richardson’s ongoing battle with injuries has cost him his spot. Selectors opted for more durable pace options to navigate the upcoming ten-Test winter.
    • Matt Short: The white-ball specialist was not retained, signalling a move away from players who do not feature in the Test or ODI frameworks.
    • Lance Morris: The Wild Thing missed out following a recurring back injury that has hampered his ability to break into the starting XI consistently.
    • Usman Khawaja: The veteran opener’s absence is formal, following his recent retirement from international cricket.

    Cricket Australia 2026–27 contract list:

Xavier Bartlett, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Brendan Doggett, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster, and Adam Zampa
