Mumbai: A sessions court on Thursday rejected the bail of 60-year-old nurse allegedly involved in a child trafficking racket operating out of a local hospital in Govandi. Anita Sawant is accused of conspiring with a doctor to sell a newborn baby for Rs 5 lakh. According to the prosecution, the incident took place in Nov 2025 at Royal Hospital. It is alleged that Sawant, in collaboration with Dr Kayamuddin Khan, performed a delivery for an unmarried woman who was eight months pregnant. Following the birth, the child was reportedly abandoned by the mother, at which point the hospital staff allegedly stepped in to facilitate an illegal sale. “The material on record indicates the role of the…accused in dealing with the purchaser co-accused Darshana Shingare through co-accused Shama. The …accused along with co-accused thus in furtherance of their common intention and in conspiracy with the co-accused is involved in the commission of the offence,” the judge said.
The prosecution argued that Sawant played an “active role” in the trade. The prosecution claimed that immediately after the birth, Sawant used the assistance of a co-accused, identified as Shama, to send photographs of the infant to a prospective buyer, Darshana Shingare. Shingare allegedly intended to purchase the child for Rs 5 lakh without any legal adoption formalities.
