Mumbai: In the wee hours of Sunday, two men riding a motorcycle were killed when a truck ran over them at Dahisar (E) on the Western Express Highway. After the crime, the truck driver fled the scene. An FIR for negligence and rash driving was registered, and police wasted no time to track down the accused all the way to a village in Gujarat. Salman Khan was arrested within 24 hours. Khan told police he had heard a sound (when the truck came into contact with the motorcycle) but was not aware of the fatalities.Zahir Amlani, and his friend Irshad Hussain, were commuting on the north-bound arm of the highway when the crash occurred near Dahisar metro station around 1.40 am. Amlani, who lives in Mira Road, was riding while Hussain was seated pillion. After the crash, Amlani and Hussain were moved to a hospital. They had suffered serious head injuries in the crash and succumbed to the wounds at the hospital. “The nearest camera was located at least 100 metres away and the footage wasn’t very clear,” a source in the police department said. Officers then examined footage from cameras mounted at the Dahisar check naka. They matched grabs from both the cameras and zeroed down on two suspicious vehicles — one of which had been involved in the crash. The truck had reached Gujarat by then. The police tracked it down and found bloodstains on the tyres which confirmed its involvement in the crash. In her statement to the police, Amlani’s mother, Nazneen, said that her son was to return home from his workplace around 9 pm on Saturday. As the clock ticked way past his return time, she called Amlani around 11 pm. He picked up his mother’s call, telling her that he was to head home and was accompanied by Hussain. Amlani worked in a private company at Bangur Nagar in Goregaon (W).
