81-year-old loses over 7 crore to 'digital arrest' scam in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: After noticing TOI articles on digital arrest cases in Hyderabad, an 81-year-old retired businessman reported being scammed of over Rs 7 crore using the same modus operandi. Posing as Mumbai Police officers, the cyber fraudsters threatened to arrest him in a bogus drug-trafficking and fake passports case and extorted the money.According to a complaint filed by the octagenarian with Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) on January 2, his ordeal began on October 27 last year when he received a WhatsApp call from a person claiming to be Sunil Sharma from Blue Dart customer care. Sharma told the victim that a parcel sent in his name from Mumbai to Bangkok contained a laptop, five passports and 200 gram MDMA, a narcotic drug. Minutes later, another caller, posing as a Mumbai crime branch officer, said that based on the evidence, the victim faced charges of extortion, drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorism.Placing the victim under ‘digital arrest’, the impostors warned him against revealing case details to his family or contacting bankers or lawyers, and ordered him to provide full disclosure of his investments. Under sustained intimidation, the businessman transferred Rs 19.8 lakh on October 29 to a City Union Bank account. Further, he installed the Signal app to communicate with them. Between November 6 and December 5, he executed five more RTGS transfers to different bank accounts, bringing the total loss to over Rs 7.12 crore. On December 29, the fraudsters sought an additional Rs 1.2 cr to close the case file against him. Growing suspicious, the victim lodged a complaint on December 31.

One hand bag rule vital amid power bank fire fears: Experts | India News

One hand bag rule vital amid power bank fire fears: Experts

NEW DELHI: India has barred the use of power banks to charge portable electronic devices inflight. Charging power banks by plugging them to in-seat power supply systems that airlines provide is also no longer allowed.Permitted only in hand bags, flyers are no longer supposed to keep power banks and batteries in overhead bins. This comes after instances of lithium batteries catching fire mid-flight.DGCA recently issued a ‘dangerous goods advisory circular’ to minimise risks from lithium battery-powered devices carried by passengers and crew members. The regulator has directed airlines to make inflight announcements regarding the new rules. Passengers need to “immediately inform cabin crew if any device emits heat, smoke or an unusual odour”, the rules say, adding that airlines must “promptly report all safety issues and occurrences related to lithium battery incidents to DGCA”. Some other countries and airlines, including Emirates and Singapore Airlines, had issued similar restrictions for the same reason last year.Aviation experts warn that airlines should strictly implement the one-hand-bag-per-passenger rule in wake of this new fear. The reason: While batteries and power banks are not allowed in check-in bags, airlines very often take hand bags — which have portable electronic devices (PEDs) and power banks — at boarding gates or aerobridgesfrom passengers and keep them in the belly of aircraft, as overhead bins are full.“This defeats the purpose of not allowing batteries in check-in bags. A battery catching fire in baggage hold, remaining undetected and then spreading can have serious consequences. The issue of how much cabin bags flyers carry onboard needs to be tackled either by airlines on their own. And if they can’t do so, rules need to be in place to ensure lithium batteries do not make it to baggage hold,” said a senior pilot. The new DGCA circular says: “The widespread usage of lithium batteries in various rechargeable devices has led to an increase in carriage of lithium batteries by air. Power banks, portable chargers, and similar devices containing lithium batteries can act as ignition sources and potentially initiate on-board fires. Lithium batteries placed in overhead stowage bins or within carry-on baggage may be obscured, difficult to access, or not readily monitored by passengers or crew members. This may result in delayed detection of smoke or fire and response actions, increasing the potential hazard to flight safety.”Lithium battery fires are very “energetic” and can cause PEDs to explode. “A lithium battery fire can be started by uncontrolled heating, overcharging, crushing or internal short circuit triggered by poor manufacturing quality, aged batteries or damage due to mishandling. Unlike other fires, lithium battery fires may be self-sustaining and require special methods to handle. The general preventive measures to minimise risks of lithium battery fire may include minimising possibilities of heating of devices; early detection in case of fire; and reinforcement of effectiveness of firefighting procedures,” it adds.

Sanju Samson draws Ajit Agarkar’s attention with List A century ahead of NZ ODIs

The timing could not have been better for Sanju Samson. The Indian star was playing for Kerala in the fifth round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and produced a commanding century against Jharkhand. This innings would put him back on the radar of the selectors for the ODIs, just ahead of the team selections for the New Zealand ODI tour.

The Indian team has been considering replacing the backup wicket-keeper in the Indian team. Rishabh Pant has been playing in the role for a long time, but has not played in a single game, and hence, the selectors are eyeing someone who can also have an alternative role other than replacing Rahul in the Indian XI.

The change is likely to be made from the upcoming series against New Zealand, which starts on the 11th of January, and the squad is most likely to be announced anytime by this week.

Sanju Samson issues ultimatum for Ajit Agarkar with VHT hundred

During a record chase of 312 runs against Jharkhand, Kerala have managed to chase the target with ease, with 8 wickets remaining in their innings. The Indian wicket-keeper opened the innings for Kerala alongside the skipper, Rohan Kunnummal.

The two openers gave Kerala a stunning start in the match with a stunning 212-run opening stand, with Kunnummal playing the destructive role in the team, as he scored his 124 runs off just 78 balls, with 8 fours and 11 sixes.

Sanju Samson assured their control in the innings and managed to show his intent, alongside adding stability to the innings, as the knock he played would force the selectors to notice him on the eve of the squad selection. Sanju Samson managed to score 101 runs off just 95 balls, with 9 fours and 3 sixes.

Sanju Samson’s century comes after a quiet outing for Ishan Kishan

Sanju Samson’s century has come at a time when the most likely candidate to replace Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, had a quieter outing with his state team, Jharkhand. Kishan has been in some stellar form since the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which he continued into the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Kishan recently forced his way back into the ICC T20 World Cup squad for India; however, in the same match where Samson scored his century, Kishan was dismissed for 21 runs off just 21 balls. Kishan has amassed 933 runs in 27 ODI matches at an average of 42.41 and a strike rate of 102. He also has a double century for India in ODI cricket.

He is in the mix to replace Rishabh Pant as the backup wicket-keeper alongside KL Rahul in the side. Rahul has turned out to be an irreplaceable gloveman in the Indian ODI side.

Rishabh Pant reminds all of his white-ball value with his Vijay Hazare Trophy form

Rishabh Pant, the left-handed wicket-keeper batsman, has not played a single ODI game for India since the last ODI against Sri Lanka in 2024. Yet he has been part of all ODI series for India as a backup option and also won the Champions Trophy alongside the Indian team, despite not featuring in a single game.

Rishabh Pant has been captaining Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His first half-century came in the second game of the tournament while chasing a total, and then recently he backed it with another 72 off just 45 balls against Services.

Pant has also played in 31 ODI matches for the Indian team and has managed to score 871 runs with a strike rate of 106 and an average of 33.5. With KL Rahul as the main wicket-keeper and a very fine batter for India in ODIs, Kishan, Dhruv Jurel, and now Sanju Samson’s return to form have added wings to the Indian side.

He chose UK, she chose India: Gujarat HC paves way for couple’s divorce | India News

He chose UK, she chose India: Gujarat HC paves way for couple’s divorce

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat HC has paved the way for a couple’s divorce after their marriage broke down over conflicting desires about where to live — the husband preferred living in the UK, but the wife did not want to leave India. The HC quashed Ahmedabad’s family court order that had rejected a mutual-consent divorce petition as “premature”.The family court had also cited the absence of a waiver application to bypass the mandatory six-month “cooling-off” period under Section 13B (2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The HC restored the divorce petition and directed the family court to decide the matter within six months. The couple married on Dec 9, 2023, but separated barely a month later, on Jan 17, 2024, when the man left for the UK for further studies. He informed her that he planned to settle permanently in the UK and asked her to join him. However, the woman was reluctant to leave India. She informed him she was settled in Ahmedabad and preferred to pursue her career in India only. After deciding to part ways, they filed a divorce petition under Section 13B of the Act on April 1, 2025, and stated that the discord between them arose from their desire to live in different countries. After the hearing, the bench of Justice Sangeeta Vishen and Justice Nisha Thakore said, “Perceptibly, there is no scope of reunion between the parties, for the parties are staying separately for more than one year as on the date of presenting the petition under Section 13B of the Act of 1955. Both the parties have mutually agreed to divorce; therefore, the six-month period as well as one year as provided in Section 13B (1) is almost over. Considering the stand taken by the respective parties, reunion is not possible. Not accepting the request of the parties, in the opinion of this court, will only prolong their agony. Both the parties are young and are desirous of pursuing their careers, as per their own wish.”

Cigarettes to get expensive from Feb 1! How much more will you have to pay? Check list

Cigarettes are set to cost more from next month! The jump in cigarette prices comes after government’s decision to impose an additional excise duty under a revised tax structure, pushing up the tax burden across all categories. The finance ministry notified amendments to the Central Excise Act, introducing an additional excise duty ranging from Rs 2,050 to Rs 8,500 per 1,000 sticks, depending on cigarette length. This increase will come on top of the 40% GST that will be levied on tobacco products from February 1, making each cigarette noticeably costlier at the counter. In per-stick terms, the increase translates into a clear jump in retail prices, particularly for medium and long cigarettes. The additional excise duty across categories is outlined below:

How much cigarette prices will go up from February 1?

Cigarette category Length Additional excise duty
Short non-filter cigarettes Up to 65 mm ~Rs 2.05 per stick
Short filter cigarettes Up to 65 mm ~Rs 2.10 per stick
Medium-length cigarettes 65–70 mm ~Rs 3.6–4 per stick
Long / premium cigarettes 70–75 mm ~Rs 5.4 per stick
“Other” non-standard designs Varies Rs 8.5 per stick

This higher slab for “other” category applies only to unusual or non-standard cigarette designs. Most popular cigarette brands do not fall under this category.

New excise duty rates on cigarettes from Feb 1

What about other products?

From February 1, all tobacco products, including cigarettes and pan masala, will attract 40% GST, while biris will be taxed at 18%. Chewing tobacco and jarda scented tobacco will face an excise duty of 82%, and gutkha will attract an excise duty of 91%. The total tax incidence on pan masala, after factoring in GST, will remain unchanged at 88%. The revised tax structure replaces the existing regime of 28% GST along with a compensation cess on tobacco and related products. The levy of excise duty on cigarettes and a cess on pan masala was approved by Parliament last month, following a GST Council decision in September on taxing these products over and above GST after the compensation cess framework ends.

What has changed?

Currently, tobacco products attract 28% GST along with a varied compensation cess. From February 1, this will shift to 40% GST, along with excise duty and compensation cess. The GST Council had earlier decided that the compensation cess would cease after the repayment of loans taken to compensate states for GST revenue losses during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Rs 2.69 lakh crore loan is scheduled to be fully repaid by January 31, 2026. Giving reasons for the hike in excise duty on cigarettes, sources said it will ensure that cigarettes carry a tax burden proportionate to their severe public health impact, and also maintain a tax incidence closer to international best practices. Taxes on cigarettes in India have remained unchanged for the past seven years since the introduction of GST in July 2017. According to World Bank estimates, India’s total tax incidence on cigarettes is around 53% of the retail price, substantially lower than the World Health Organization’s recommended benchmark of 75% or more. In comparison, countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia tax cigarettes at over 80–85% of the retail price, while France, New Zealand and several EU member states maintain tax levels exceeding 75–80%.New rules also mandate manufacturers of chewing tobacco, jarda scented tobacco and gutkha to install functional CCTV systems covering all packing machines and preserve footage for at least 24 months. Manufacturers will have to disclose the number and capacity of machines to excise authorities and can claim abatement in excise duty if a machine remains non-functional for a minimum of 15 consecutive days.

DV vs MIE Weather Report, Pitch Report Of Dubai- ILT20 2025-26, Final

Desert Vipers will be up against MI Emirates in the final of the International League T20. In this article, we determine the DV vs MIE Weather Report and Pitch Report of Dubai International Cricket Stadium for the final game of the tournament.

DV vs MIE Weather Report, Pitch Report Of Dubai- ILT20 2025-26, Final:

DV vs MIE Weather Report of Dubai:

There is no chance of rain during the DV vs MIE game in Dubai. The maximum temperature is predicted to be 28°C, while the minimum temperature would be 18°C.

DV vs MIE Pitch Report of Dubai International Cricket Stadium:

The Dubai International Cricket Stadium should dish out a surface that is good for batting and has something in it for the bowlers as well in the final of the fourth season of the ILT20 between Desert Vipers and MI Emirates.

Your daily dose of cricket!

next

The pitch is expected to assist the batters with the ball coming nicely on the bat when it is new, i.e., in the first six overs, and the batters will have to make the most of it with the field restrictions also in play.

The batting might become a bit difficult as the match progresses, with the pitch slowing only if the conditions remain dry.

If dew decides to play its part, it will be the batters who will get the advantage of it as the ball will start skidding, making batting a lot easier than it could be in normal conditions.

As far as the fast bowlers are concerned, they can get some swing upfront in both innings, and that is the period when they can make the most of it by picking up wickets.

The spinners, on the other hand, will have their task cut out if the seam of the ball gets wet, as gripping it will be difficult.

Along with the spinners, the pacers will also feel the brunt of the ball getting wet, especially in the final five overs of the innings, as they won’t have many options up their sleeves to rely on, with the yorker becoming ineffective as a viable weapon.

That is the reason why bowlers would hope to get dry conditions for them to have a say in the game and for an even contest between bat and ball

Due to the same reason, the team that wins the toss in all likelihood will opt to bowl first in the game in question, as defending a score won’t be easy.

The team batting first in the DV vs MIE game should look to score at least 180-190 runs and rely on their bowlers to pick early wickets in the second innings.

Conclusion

Desert Vipers would back their players to put on a strong performance in their respective departments in order to challenge the MI Emirates in the final.

MI Emirates, on the other hand, would like to carry the form that they showed in the eliminator in the all-important game against the Desert Vipers and clinch their second ILT20 title.

Being on waitlist does not guarantee hiring, says Allahabad high court

PRAYAGRAJ: A waitlisted candidate has no absolute right for being considered for appointment and that a waitlist cannot be for an indefinite period, Allahabad high court has ruled.Dismissing a petition filed by Nitish Maurya and four others, Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery said in its order in November, “It is well settled that a person in waiting list has no absolute right for consideration to get appointed as well as that a waiting list cannot remain in existence for unlimited period or a particular selection process cannot remain pending for unlimited period.”The petitioners had participated in a selection process for posts of assistant teachers (LT Grade) in privately managed, recognized and aided higher secondary schools advertised by Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Service Selection Board, Prayagraj. Initially, petitioners did not appear in the merit list or the waiting list. The petitioners approached the high court where directions were issued to the Board to fill up all vacancies in the state through the procedure detailed by the court. The state preferred a special appeal against the order of the single-judge bench wherein it was ordered that all vacancies be filled up by the selected candidates who had not joined anywhere and also by waitlisted candidates by giving them options to choose regarding placement in such institutions/colleges. Accordingly, a fresh panel of candidates was to be prepared.Secretary, UP Secondary Education Service Selection Board, Prayagraj, issued a communication to director of education (secondary) regarding counselling on vacant posts under the waiting list and thereafter the process was completed with the counselling the selected candidates as well. Subsequently, an order was passed stating that there was no need to modify the earlier waitlist. This order was challenged before the HC.
