Bellerive Oval Pitch Report

Bellerive Oval in Hobart delivers a well-balanced pitch for Big Bash League matches, where seamers gain early help from movement and bounce with the new ball. The pitch provides true carry and shorter boundaries, becoming more batter-friendly later, supporting strike rates near 138 and first-innings totals typically from 147 to 166. As the match advances, the surface flattens out, benefiting aggressive batting. Fast bowlers claim most early wickets, while spinners gain traction with grip in the middle overs. Dew, if present, can turn it into a high-scoring affair. Chasing sides have dominated lately, winning 10 of the last 20 BBL games here. Totals of 150-190 have been defendable, with the ground favoring teams that post or chase competitively.

Ukraine drone plot against Putin: US intelligence rejects Russian claim – What the CIA says

Ukraine drone plot against Putin: US intelligence rejects Russian claim - What the CIA says
Russian President Vladimir Putin (PTI photo)

The CIA has turned down Moscow’s claim that Ukraine tried to attack Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s residence earlier this week. US officials said CIA director John Ratcliffe briefed President Donald Trump on the assessment on Wednesday.Russia had publicly accused Ukraine of trying to strike Putin’s home on Monday, and Trump told reporters that Putin mentioned it to him during a phone call. Trump said he was troubled by the claim and seemed to accept it at first, even though Ukraine strongly denied any involvement.

Russia Releases Map Showing How Ukrainian Drones ‘Tried To Attack’ Putin’s Secret Home In Novgorod

“I don’t like it. It’s not good,” Trump said, adding that he was “very angry” when he heard about the alleged attack.Russia used the accusation to warn that it might take a tougher position in peace talks, even though it has not provided clear evidence of the supposed drone strike. Moscow claimed the target was Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region, a rural area. But the US intelligence assessment matches Ukraine’s position. In a social media post, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Russia’s claim “a complete fabrication intended to justify additional attacks against Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia’s own refusal to take necessary steps to end the war.”On Monday, even though Trump said he was upset about the reported attack, he admitted he had no confirmation and said it was “possible” it never happened.“It’s a delicate period of time,” he said. “This is not the right time. It’s one thing to be offensive because they’re offensive. It’s another thing to attack his house.”This episode came shortly after Trump hosted Ukrainian counterpart Zelenskyy at his private club Mar-a-Lago in Florida. While they appeared positive after the meeting, they made little progress on major issues such as security guarantees for Ukraine and Russia’s demand that Ukraine cede territory.Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, said on Wednesday that he and other senior officials spoke with Rustem Umerov and several European national security officials about efforts to end the war.“We focused on how to move the discussions forward in a practical way on behalf of @POTUS’ peace process, including strengthening security guarantees and developing effective deconfliction mechanisms to help end the war and ensure it does not restart,” he wrote on social media.

RANCHI: Indian women’s hockey team forward Lalremsiami is set to become the first sportsperson from Mizoram to receive the Arjuna Award, according to sources. The award is expected to be announced in the coming days.Popularly known as ‘Siami’, she made her senior debut in 2017 during a Test series against Belarus. Since then, she has played 177 international matches and scored 67 goals.

Why Mumbai’s iconic Azad Maidan is no longer safe for cricket | Bombay Sport Exchange

A major milestone in her career came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where India reached the semifinals under coach Sjoerd Marijne. Siami’s late father had wanted to see her play at the Olympics, but he died in 2019 when she was playing at the Hockey Series Finals in Hiroshima. She continued in the tournament and later went on to make history in Tokyo, becoming the first woman athlete from Mizoram to compete at the Games. She has also represented India at two Commonwealth Games, winning bronze in Birmingham. She has been part of the teams that won a silver and a bronze at the Asian Games and has competed in two World Cups. While she has been more than impressive playing for the senior team, her accolades as a junior player are also noteworthy. She won a silver at the 3rd Youth Olympic Games in 2018 and was awarded the FIH Rising Star of the year in 2019. However, none of this would have been possible had it not been for the likes of Miss Btei, who trained her at SAI Hockey Centre in Thenzawl, Mizoram. Later, she also trained at the National Hockey Academy in New Delhi. And these days whenever she isn’t playing or isn’t training in Bengaluru, she tries her best to give back to the community by training the kids in Mizoram. She is currently playing in the Women’s Hockey India League for the Shrachi Bengal Tigers and is aiming to lead the team to the top. However, her primary focus remains on the national stage, where her biggest goal is to help the Indian team win the qualifiers in March and secure a spot at the World Cup.

US offers temporary sanctions relief to Russian-controlled Serbian oil firm

US offers temporary sanctions relief to Russian-controlled Serbian oil firm

The United States has granted a majority-Russian-owned Serbian oil company a temporary reprieve from sanctions targeting Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, a Serbian minister said on Wednesday. Washington’s sanctions on the Petroleum Industry of Serbia (NIS), part of its crackdown on Russia’s energy sector, forced the shutdown in early December of Serbia’s sole oil refinery, which supplies around 80 percent of the Balkan country’s fuel needs. The measures have hit hard in Serbia, a key Kremlin ally and one of the few European countries not to have imposed sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war.“NIS has obtained a licence from US OFAC (the Office of Foreign Assets Control) allowing it to continue operations until January 23. This means that the Pancevo refinery will be able to resume operations after 36 days,” Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said on Instagram. The reprieve will allow the Pancevo refinery, located near the capital Belgrade, to resume its activities refining crude — a significant relief for Serbia, which has had to dip into its fossil fuel reserves to satisfy domestic demand. “We have achieved what seemed almost impossible. We will safeguard our energy security, as we have done so far,” Handanovic added. After nine months of successive postponements, Washington on October 9 imposed sanctions on NIS, demanding the complete exit of Russian shareholders and preventing the refinery from receiving supplies. But talks over its potential sale have dragged on, with analysts warning that the refinery’s closure could shrink Serbia’s economic growth and threaten thousands of jobs. NIS employs some 13,500 people, and contributed more than two billion euros ($2.5 billion) in tax revenue, or nearly 12 percent of the national budget, according to the firm’s annual report. ‘Phenomenal news’Shortly before Handanovic’s announcement, President Aleksandar Vucic said on social media that he believed he could soon announce some “phenomenal political news”. “We’ve worked hard, we’ve earned it,” Vucic added, without offering further details. NIS is 45-percent owned by Gazprom Neft, which has been targeted by US sanctions. Its parent company, Gazprom, transferred its 11.3-percent stake in NIS in September to another Russian firm, Intelligence. The Serbian state holds nearly 30 percent of NIS, with the rest owned by minority shareholders.According to the Serbian national broadcaster RTS, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was involved in discussions between Vucic and the US State Department earlier Wednesday, while the Hungarian firm MOL is in negotiations to buy the Russian portion of NIS’s shares. Meanwhile, Croatian pipeline operator Janaf, which had stopped supplying crude to the Pancevo refinery because of the sanctions, also announced it had been informed by OFAC about the reprieve. This decision “allows us to continue implementing our agreement (with NIS) on oil transportation” until January 23, the Croatian company stated. The two companies have a contract for crude transport valid until the end of 2026, for a total capacity of 10 million tonnes.

Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani sworn in as New York City first Muslim mayor at historic subway station – watch

Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani sworn in as New York City first Muslim mayor at historic subway station - watch

Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani on Thursday was sworn in as New York City’s mayor, beginning a four-year term at the helm of the United States’ largest city. The 34-year-old Democrat, known for his left-leaning views and criticism of US President Donald Trump, took the oath of office just after midnight at the long-abandoned City Hall subway station beneath Manhattan’s City Hall.Mamdani made history as New York’s first Muslim mayor, placing his hand on the Quran during the ceremony. “This is truly the honour and the privilege of a lifetime,” he said after being sworn in.The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a close political ally, at the historic City Hall station, one of the city’s original subway stops, famed for its elegant arched ceilings.Mamdani will be sworn in again later on Thursday in a larger public ceremony at City Hall, where US Senator Bernie Sanders, one of his political inspirations, will administer the oath.

The event will be followed by a public block party along Broadway’s “Canyon of Heroes,” traditionally known for ticker-tape parades.During the mayoral campaign, Trump had threatened to withhold federal funding from New York City if Mamdani won and even floated the idea of deploying National Guard troops. However, the president later surprised both supporters and critics by inviting Mamdani to the White House for what was described as a cordial meeting in November. “I want him to do a great job and will help him do a great job,” Trump said. Despite this, tensions are expected to resurface given their sharp policy differences, particularly on immigration.

Who is Zohran Mamdani

Born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the son of Indian-origin parents and acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, known for films such as Salaam Bombay! and Monsoon Wedding, and Mahmood Mamdani, an Indian-born Ugandan academic. He spent part of his early childhood in Cape Town before moving to New York at the age of seven.Mamdani was educated at St George’s Grammar School in Cape Town, Bank Street School for Children, and the Bronx High School of Science. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College in 2014. While in college, he co-founded Students for Justice in Palestine and later worked on several progressive political campaigns in New York.In 2019, Mamdani won a seat in the New York State Assembly from the 36th District, representing Astoria and Long Island City, where he focused on issues such as housing, transit affordability and immigrant rights, priorities that shaped his mayoral bid.A practising Shia Muslim, Mamdani married Syrian artist Rama Duwaji earlier this year. Her illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker and The Washington Post. The couple will move from their one-bedroom, rent-stabilised apartment in an outer borough to the official mayoral residence in Manhattan.(With input from agencies)

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood headline Australia’s squad for T20 World Cup 2026

Cricket Australia have ushered in the New Year with a clear statement of intent, officially naming a ‘spin-heavy’ 15-player provisional squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. With the tournament set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka starting this February, selectors have prioritized slow-bowling depth and versatility to combat the subcontinent’s expected turning tracks.

Mitchell Marsh to lead a new-look attack

Veteran all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will captain the side, continuing his leadership role in the shortest format. The squad features a fascinating blend of seasoned World Cup winners and fresh faces prepared for the heat of Asian conditions.

Perhaps the most significant tactical shift is the selection of four primary spin options. While Adam Zampa remains the undisputed leader of the slow-ball attack, he is joined by left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and the young sensation Cooper Connolly. With all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short also capable of turning the ball, Australia could potentially field up to five spin options in their starting XI.

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David included despite injury concerns

In a calculated gamble, Australian selectors have named Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Tim David in the 15-man squad despite significant fitness clouds hanging over the trio. Cummins remains the biggest concern as he continues to manage a lumbar stress injury in his back; he is scheduled for a pivotal medical scan later this month that will determine if he can physically withstand the tournament’s intensity.

Meanwhile, veteran seamer Hazlewood is racing against time to recover from a combination of hamstring and Achilles issues that sidelined him for the recent Ashes series. High-stakes finisher David rounds out the injury list after sustaining a grade two hamstring strain during the BBL on Boxing Day. Chief selector George Bailey remains optimistic, stating the group is “tracking well,” but with the ICC deadline for final changes set for January 31, the medical team will be working overtime to ensure these key pillars are ready for the opening clash against Ireland on February 11.

Mitchell Owen misses out

The announcement has not been without controversy. The most notable omission is Mitchell Owen, who was the breakout star of the 2025 season. Despite a record-breaking BBL campaign, Owen was ultimately squeezed out by the return of Cameron Green.

Furthermore, for the first time in over a decade, a T20 World Cup squad will not feature Mitchell Starc, following his retirement from the format late last year. In his place, the selectors have opted for the skill of Xavier Bartlett over a traditional left-arm replacement like Ben Dwarshuis.

Australia squad for T20 World Cup 2026: Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

Gold & silver price prediction: What’s the outlook for gold, silver in the New Year? Top things to know

Gold & silver price prediction: What's the outlook for gold, silver in the New Year? Top things to know
On the upside, MCX Gold is poised to advance toward the 140,000 level in the upcoming sessions. (AI image)

Gold and silver price prediction: Gold and silver prices are likely to maintain their bullish trend with dips and consolidation phases in between, says Abhilash Koikkara, Head – Forex & Commodities, Nuvama Professional Clients Group. He shares his views on gold and silver:

MCX Gold Outlook

MCX Gold has retreated toward its breakout zone after marking an all-time high of 140,465. With the broader trend still positive, we view this correction as a buying opportunity. As long as prices hold above the breakout support, the overall outlook for MCX Gold remains bullish. From a technical perspective, immediate support is placed around the 132,000 level, which marks the breakout from the prior swing high. Any retracement toward this area is expected to attract fresh buying interest, thereby capping near-term downside. Holding this support level keeps the bullish structure intact. On the upside, MCX Gold is poised to advance toward the 140,000 level in the upcoming sessions. This projected target is well aligned with the broader bullish trend and reflects the underlying strength of established market momentum. Furthermore, a decisive and sustained breakout above intermediate resistance level could attract additional buying interest, thereby reinforce the positive sentiment and extend the upward move further.Overall, MCX Gold is expected to maintain its positive bias unless there is a clear and decisive break below the 132,000 support level. The broader technical structure remains constructive and continues to favour trend continuation. Provided that momentum indicators and overall market sentiment continue to remain supportive, the precious metal is expected to experience further upside potential in the coming sessions.

MCX Gold Trading Strategy

  • CMP: 135600
  • Target: 140000
  • Stop Loss: 132000

MCX Silver Outlook

MCX Silver has recorded an all-time high, followed by a subsequent correction from those levels. Despite this pullback, prices continue to trade with a positive bias, and we expect consolidation around the recent highs. Such consolidation phases generally signal a temporary balance between buyers and sellers, and a breakout from the current formation may trigger an accelerated price move as momentum builds and the prevailing trend resumes. From a technical standpoint, a rebound from the support level signals renewed strength in the trend and raises the probability of further upside. As long as prices hold above the weekly support levels, the bullish bias is likely to remain intact. The immediate key support is identified near the 221,000 level, which now acts as a strong base. Any retracement toward this zone may attract fresh buying interest, helping to stabilize and sustain prices. On the upside, MCX Silver could potentially advance toward the 260,000 level in the near to medium term. This target reflects an extension of the previous bullish move and aligns with the prevailing market momentum. Overall, as long as prices remain above the 221,000 support, MCX Silver is expected to sustain its positive trajectory, with additional upside possible as bullish sentiment continues to gain strength.

MCX Silver Trading Strategy

  • CMP: 237500
  • Target: 260000
  • Stop Loss: 221000

Rupee falls 11 paise! Currency enters New Year 2026 in red; trades at 89.99 against US dollar

Rupee falls 11 paise! Currency enters New Year 2026 in red; trades at 89.99 against US dollar

Rupee entered 2026 on a weak note, slipping 11 paise to 89.99 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday. This comes as persistent pressure from foreign fund outflows and trade-related uncertainty continue to cloud sentiment in the currency market. The currency fell sharply in 2025, losing nearly 5% since it crossed the 85-per-dollar level in January and moving past the earlier record low of 91 against the greenback. Over the same period, the rupee has shed more than 19% against the euro, about 14% versus the British pound and over 5% against the Japanese yen, making it the weakest performer among Asian currencies. This decline has unfolded even as the dollar index dropped more than 10% and crude oil prices stayed soft globally. Pressure on rupee intensified after reciprocal tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump in April triggered sustained foreign portfolio selling, with investors reallocating funds to other emerging markets seen as offering better risk-adjusted returns.According to official data, cited by PTI, foreign direct investment on a net basis between January and October turned negative, while overall investment inflows declined to minus $0.010 billion, compared with inflows of $23 billion in the same period last year. Net FDI stood at $6.567 billion, while net portfolio investment remained negative at minus $6.575 billion. “FDI acts as the anchor flow for the balance of payments. When that anchor weakens, the currency becomes more dependent on portfolio flows; forex markets turn more sensitive to global risk sentiment; and central bank intervention requirements increase,” said Anindya Banerjee, head of currency and commodity research at Kotak Securities, PTI quoted. The rupee’s losses accelerated towards the end of the year. It fell more than 1% in a single session on November 21 to 89.66 per dollar, slipped past the 90 mark on December 2 and breached 91 on December 16.
