Trump said on social media that he had extended the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz –a strategically important shipping route between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and would hold off strikes on Iranian energy facilities for five days.“Indian equities witnessed a constructive rebound, with markets closing on a positive note after the sharp sell-off in the previous session. The recovery was largely driven by a moderation in risk perception, as early signs of potential de-escalation in the ongoing US–Iran tensions helped restore some investor confidence,” said Hariprasad K, Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth, PTI quoted. He added that the rally should be viewed in context.“After a sharp, sentiment-driven correction, such rebounds are not uncommon and often reflect a combination of short covering and value buying. Investors typically use such dislocations to accumulate quality stocks at relatively attractive valuations, rather than it being a signal of a structural trend reversal,” Hariprasad said.Asian markets ended sharply higher, with South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng posting gains.European markets were trading mostly lower, while US equities had ended higher on Monday.“The domestic market witnessed a relief rally following a temporary pause in attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure, which could lead to further leeway in easing West Asia-related tensions. However, caution persists as investors await greater clarity on developments around the Strait of Hormuz,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited.Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 1.96 per cent to $101.9 per barrel.Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 10,414.23 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), however, purchased shares worth Rs 12,033.97 crore.

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Tuesday sentenced Kashmiri separatist and Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief Asiya Andrabi to life imprisonment in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case. Her two associates, Fehmeeda and Nasreen, were sentenced to 30 years in prison in the same case.On January 14, Andrabi, Sofi Fehmeeda and Nahida Nasreen were convicted under Sections 20, 38 and 39 of the UAPA.The three were also convicted under IPC sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) and 121A (conspiracy to commit offences against the State), reported PTI.Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh pronounced the sentence after hearing arguments on the quantum of sentence. The National Investigation Agency, following the conviction, sought life imprisonment for Andrabi, saying she had waged war against India and that “a stern message was required to be sent that conspiring against the State would invite the harshest penalty.”According to her interrogation report accessed by The Times of India, Andrabi told investigators she was in regular touch with former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and often spoke to his foreign policy adviser Sartaz Aziz. The report said Andrabi also spoke about her contacts with officials at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, former ISI chief Hamid Gul, and UN-designated global terrorists Hafiz Saeed and Syed Salahuddin in connection with discussions on Kashmir. According to the report, Andrabi told the NIA that she had written to Nawaz Sharif in 2014, saying “Pakistan is not doing anything for Kashmir”. She said Sharif replied, “We are doing our best”. It also said that after her mother’s death on November 28, 2015, Sharif sent her a condolence letter by post. During meetings at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi in 2014 with Sartaz Aziz, then Pakistan high commissioner Abdul Basit and deputy high commissioner Syed Haidar Shah, Andrabi allegedly told them that “Pakistan was taking Kashmir issue casually”. She was told by Pakistani officials that a Kashmir Committee in Pakistan was handling the matter, the report said. The report further said Andrabi remained in regular contact with Hafiz Saeed and asked him to “pressure Pakistan government”. She also spoke to him around the time of the death of his wife, Umi Talha, and later after the death of his nephew Abdul Rehman Makki. According to the interrogation report, Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin also regularly called Andrabi, and she asked him to persuade the Pakistan government to raise the Kashmir issue at the United Nations.

Bengal assembly elections: From TMC to BJP – top 10 wealthiest candidates in fray | India News

Bengal assembly elections: From TMC to BJP - top 10 wealthiest candidates in fray

As political campaigning intensifies ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, an analysis of candidates’ self‑declared assets reveals a striking concentration of wealth among the state’s political class.According to data compiled from election affidavits and published by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), several sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) contesting the polls are among the richest in the country’s politically vibrant eastern state. At the top of the list is Jakir Hossain, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MLA from Jangipur in Murshidabad, with total declared assets exceeding Rs 67 crore. Hossain’s wealth is primarily in movable assets, valued at nearly Rs 49.3 crore, with an additional Rs 17.9 crore in immovable assets.Following him is Ahmed Javed Khan, also of the AITC, representing Kasba in South 24 Parganas. Khan’s total assets stand at approximately Rs 32.3 crore, bolstered by significant investments and property holdings.Third on the list is AITC’s Vivek Gupta from Jorasanko in Kolkata North, whose total assets are reported at over Rs 31.9 crore. Gupta’s portfolio includes Rs 23.1 crore in movable assets and nearly Rs 8.9 crore in immovable assets.Other wealthy sitting legislators include Manoj Tiwary (Shibpur, AITC) and Bayron Biswas (Sagardighi, AITC), with declared assets of about Rs 20.3 crore and Rs 20.1 crore respectively. Both have substantial property holdings along with cash and investments. In Kalimpong, Ruden Sada Lepcha of the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha declared assets totaling over Rs 18.2 crore, placing him among the top ten richest candidates. The remaining entries in the top ten are:Pradip Mazumdar (AITC, Durgapur Purba) — Rs 18.1 croreNandita Chowdhury (AITC, Howrah Dakshin) — Rs 15.7 croreDr. Asok Kumar Chattopadhyay (AITC, Hansan) — Rs 14.7 croreDulal Chandra Das (AITC, Maheshtala) — Rs 13.7 croreThe data highlights the deep pockets of many contesting legislators, particularly from the ruling Trinamool Congress, and raises questions about the growing role of personal wealth in electoral politics. Most of these candidates have indicated on their affidavits that they possess a Permanent Account Number (PAN), a key identifier for tax compliance in India.West Bengal is gearing up for its Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with vote counting for both phases set for May 4.While the electoral battle is primarily between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), several other parties are also in the fray. The Left Front, once a dominant force in the state, is seeking to revive its political presence. The newly formed Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), launched by former TMC leader Humayun Kabir, has joined hands with Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and announced its candidates for various constituencies. In the lead-up to the elections, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during a meeting with TMC party workers on Sunday, stated that following a victory in the state, the party’s next focus would be national politics, with Delhi as the next target, according to TMC sources, as cited by ANI.

‘Except West Bengal’: SC notes ‘hardly any litigation’ over SIR in other states | India News

'Except West Bengal': SC notes 'hardly any litigation' over SIR in other states

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would consider extending the date for freezing the electoral rolls in West Bengal, even as it noted that the Election Commission’s SIR exercise had been largely smooth in other states. The observation came during the hearing of a batch of pleas alleging procedural irregularities in the ECI’s SIR exercise in West Bengal, where polling for the 294-member Assembly is scheduled for April 23 and 29, with counting on May 4.During the hearing, senior advocate and AITC leader Maneka Guruswamy requested the court to consider extending the date of freezing of electoral rolls in West Bengal so that names of persons objecting to their exclusion from the list can be adjudicated and added. The court, in response, clarified that it would consider the request. “We will consider if so required. Right now things are going well”, the court said.At the same time, the bench pointed out that the SIR exercise had not led to similar levels of litigation in most other States.“Except West Bengal, whichever states where SIR is done, everywhere it went smoothly. Even in other states, there are complications, if not equally, but there are complications. But by and large, hardly any litigation came from other States”, the CJI said. The apex court had earlier issued directions considering the peculiarity of the situation in West Bengal.Around 60 lakh names were marked as “under adjudication” in the post-SIR electoral rolls published on February 28.According to the Election Commission, the supplementary list contains the names of around 29 lakh voters whose cases have been adjudicated by judicial officers.

Iran reportedly threatening to cut Red Sea cables: What it means for internet users across the world, including India

AI-generated photo for representational purpose

Iran has reportedly threatened to damage undersea internet cables in the Red Sea, a move that will have a significant impact on internet speed across multiple countries in the world. Notably, the threat has not been directly confirmed by Iranian officials or major intelligence outlets but several notable Twitter handles, including Mario Nawfal, Lebanese-Australian entrepreneur, say the vulnerability is real, the cables are there and the potential damage is enormous.“Iran’s now threatening to cut undersea internet cables if Gulf states keep hosting U.S. troops,” said Nawfal.

Is India’s Internet Connectivity At Risk With War Threatening Undersea Cables At Strait Of Hormuz?

“Those cables carry 17% of global traffic, including UAE and Saudi AI hubs backed by Amazon, Microsoft, Google. If they snap, it’s months of outages, not hours. Meta’s contractor already pulled out of the Persian Gulf,” he added.Meanwhile, SungHoon Lee, who is world’s highest IQ 276 holder, said that he warned about the internet cables “18 days ago.”“I warned about this 18 days ago. Now Iran is threatening to CUT the undersea cables that carry 95% of ALL global internet traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Not a hypothetical. Not a ‘what if’. They SAID it. This went from warning to reality in 18 days. If you didn’t prepare then – prepare NOW,” he said in a post.

What are Red Sea internet cables and what is at stake

Beneath the waters of Red Sea are dense web of fibre optic cables that carry an estimated 30% of regional internet traffic and connecting continents like Asia, Europe and the Middle East. These are responsible for carrying everything from financial transactions and cloud services to video calls, emails, and AI workloads. The cables also connect some of the world’s most significant emerging AI infrastructure. Cutting these cables would not just slow down social media.

What it means for India

India, among other countries, has particular reason to pay attention. The cable runs through landing stations in Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Pakistan, India and Saudi Arabia. These countries (except India) that are currently directly in or adjacent to the current conflict zone.India is also one of the largest consumers of internet traffic, with significant data flows connecting Indian users to servers in West Asia, Europe, and beyond. A disruption to cables will directly affect internet speeds, cloud service reliability and digital business operations across India. Given India’s growing dependence on cloud infrastructure, digital payments and AI-powered services, a prolonged period of degraded connectivity would carry multiple economic consequences. Moreover, Alcatel Submarine Networks, the French state-owned company responsible for laying the cable, has issued force majeure notices to customers. The company has also reported the stranding of its installation ship, the Ile De Batz, off the coast of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, according to a Bloomberg report.

IPL 2026: Kavya Maran’s SRH sign veteran England pacer as replacement for Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards

Just days before IPL 2026 kicks off, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have acted swiftly to address a sudden gap in their squad. With injuries disrupting their plans, the franchise, led by owner Kavya Maran, has signed experienced English pacer David Payne as a replacement for Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards.

The timing of this move is crucial. SRH are set to open their campaign against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. With very little time left for preparation, the management clearly wanted an experienced option who could slot in immediately and deliver.

Why Jack Edwards got ruled out of IPL 2026?

The setback came in the form of an injury to Jack Edwards, who had been picked up by SRH for INR 3 crore in the auction. The 25-year-old all-rounder has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2026 season due to a foot injury he sustained earlier this month while playing for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield.

It’s a particularly unfortunate moment for Edwards, who was just beginning to make his mark on the international stage. He made his T20I debut for Australia in January 2026 against Pakistan and followed it up with an impressive Big Bash League (BB:) season, where he picked up 19 wickets in 13 matches for the Sydney Sixers – finishing as one of the top performers.

Stepping into his place is David Payne, a seasoned left-arm seamer who brings both experience and consistency. Signed for INR 1.5 crore, Payne might not have had an extensive international career – having played just one ODI for England—but his T20 record is hard to ignore.

Across 233 T20 matches, Payne has claimed 304 wickets at an average of 21.16, maintaining an economy rate of 8.03. Known for his ability to strike early in the powerplay, he also possesses a clever slower ball, making him effective in both the early and middle overs. For a team like SRH, which relies heavily on disciplined bowling, Payne’s skillset could prove extremely valuable.

What makes this signing even more exciting is his recent form. Payne was the highest wicket-taker in the 2024 Vitality Blast, picking up 33 wickets and helping Gloucestershire lift the title. He then continued his success in franchise cricket, winning the ILT20 with the Desert Vipers in January 2026. Just weeks later, he delivered a match-winning performance in the Big Bash League final, taking 3 for 18 for Perth Scorchers and earning the Player of the Final award.

Leadership changes and early challenges for SRH

While Payne’s arrival strengthens the bowling unit, SRH are still dealing with multiple challenges at the start of their campaign. One of the biggest concerns is the absence of their captain Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a lumbar stress fracture and is expected to miss the initial matches.

In his absence, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been handed the responsibility of leading the side, with Abhishek Sharma named as vice-captain. This marks a significant moment for Kishan, who will be making his IPL captaincy debut.

Kishan comes into the role with confidence, having recently led Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title and played an important role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph. His aggressive style of play and fearless approach could inject fresh energy into the SRH setup.

Despite the early setbacks, SRH still possess a balanced bowling attack. Alongside Payne, experienced Indian pacers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel will play key roles, supported by young domestic talent. The combination of experience and youth gives the team flexibility as they navigate the early phase of the tournament.

As the season begins, all eyes will be on how quickly SRH can adapt to these changes. While losing key players is never ideal, the addition of a proven performer like Payne could turn out to be a smart and timely move. If the team manages to find rhythm early, they still have every chance to start IPL 2026 on a strong note.

Oil industry pitches ethanol as clean cooking fuel to cut LPG import dependence

Oil industry pitches ethanol as clean cooking fuel to cut LPG import dependence

The petroleum sector has urged industry stakeholders to explore ethanol as a clean cooking fuel for households, as part of broader efforts to reduce India’s dependence on imported LPG and expand the biofuel ecosystem.R S Ravi, Director (Downstream) at the Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI), raised the proposal while addressing the All India Distillers’ Association conference, pointing to ongoing research on ethanol-based cooking stoves, PTI reported. He said that “a lot of work is happening” at institutions such as the LPG Equipment Research Centre and several IITs to design efficient, ethanol-compatible stoves, with prototypes expected to be ready soon.Ravi called on the distillery industry to support the initiative by partnering with manufacturers to scale up stove production and by helping develop an effective supply chain that can deliver ethanol directly to households.“This is a different ballgame. As of now, the way you are supporting the oil industry is by supplying bulk… It needs to change,” he said.“How this supply chain is going to be developed, what form it needs to be delivered, the form factor is very critical.”He further added, “Can AIDA come forward and give us ideas in terms of how we make this ethanol as a cooking fuel possible in India?”The suggestion comes at a time when India has already rolled out 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol. Ravi credited the distillery sector for enabling the programme and referred to a recent government notification mandating the sale of E20 petrol with a minimum Research Octane Number of 95 from April 1, 2026.The move towards higher-octane E20 fuel is expected to improve vehicle performance and efficiency while addressing concerns related to lower-octane blends.Ravi also urged the ethanol industry to speed up production of isobutanol for diesel blending and prepare for ethanol-to-sustainable aviation fuel pathways, though he stressed that the cooking fuel initiative should receive priority attention.Research bodies are already examining ethanol stoves as a cleaner alternative that could complement or partly replace LPG, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions. He noted that shifting ethanol from bulk industrial supply to household distribution would require new logistics models, suitable packaging formats and reliable last-mile delivery systems.India has been aggressively promoting ethanol blending to cut crude oil imports, conserve foreign exchange, reduce emissions and support farmers. Expanding ethanol use to cooking fuel could further diversify demand and strengthen energy security.Ravi emphasised the need for coordinated efforts between the oil industry and distillers to make ethanol-based cooking a viable option in the country.

‘Bad move’: Cyprus chess chief hits back at Koneru Humpy after Candidates pull-out | Chess News

'Bad move': Cyprus chess chief hits back at Koneru Humpy after Candidates pull-out
Koneru Humpy and Criton Tornaritis

NEW DELHI: Top Indian Grandmaster (GM) Koneru Humpy has pulled out of the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, saying she doesn’t feel safe travelling for the event. Her decision has sparked criticism, especially from the Cyprus Chess Federation.Humpy explained her stance clearly as she wrote on X, “After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament. No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances. This is a painful but necessary decision, and I stand by it.”The tournament, starting March 28, is a major event and the only route to the Women’s World Championship match. Humpy had qualified after finishing runner-up at the 2025 Women’s World Cup. However, concerns linked to regional tensions reportedly influenced her choice.

Strong reaction from organisers

Her withdrawal didn’t go down well with Cyprus Chess Federation President Criton Tornaritis, who publicly criticised her comments. Taking the matter to X, he said, “As President of the Cyprus Chess Federation, I am sincerely disappointed by Koneru Humpy’s decision to withdraw, citing that Cyprus ‘is not safe.”He strongly rejected her claims, adding, “The 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament is one of the largest and most important chess events in the world. This is simply incorrect. Spreading unfounded concerns harms the sport and shows a lack of respect for the organisers and the players who are participating. At the highest level of chess, decisions are based on calculation and facts, not on fear or misinformation. It was a bad move. With Humpy out, Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk will take her place, as already confirmed by FIDE. There could also be consequences, including possible fines under FIDE rules if her reason isn’t accepted. Despite her absence, India will still have representation in the women’s tournament through R Vaishali and Divya Deshmukh. In the open category, R Praggnanandhaa will be the sole flagbearer for India.
