From station banners to digital portal: How Railway police trace identities of unknown accident victims | Mumbai News

Mumbai: In Oct 2024, Mangibai Naik, a 53-year-old woman from Ghatkopar, walked into a Govt Railway Police (GRP) chowky at Kurla station. She had been summoned by the police to examine a photo of an unidentified young man who had lost his life in a railway accident. After sharing a copy of the image with her daughter over phone, Naik was certain: the man was her missing son, Nandesh. The identification appeared conclusive until Bholanath Barik, a security guard from Boisar, arrived at the chowky a few days later. Barik believed the face in the photo belonged to his missing son, Ghanshyam. Both families had searched exhaustively for any word on their sons’ whereabouts. “The man (in the photograph) had died in a railway accident four months earlier and was cremated then. He hadn’t been carrying any personal effects that could be recognised by his family,” said a GRP officer. But investigators had preserved a blood sample. They turned to the state forensic science laboratory for a DNA profile to resolve the conflict. When the result finally arrived, the news was devastating for Barik: the victim was indeed Ghanshyam.

In 2025, railway accidents claimed 2,287 lives, with fatalities resulting from track crossing, falls from overcrowded trains, and collisions with railway poles, besides other factors. Over 23% of these victims remained unidentified, their families never knowing the fate of their loved ones. The GRP has ramped up its efforts to ascertain identities of unknown victims. As part of a special campaign, a dedicated four-member team was set up at each chowky towards the end of last year to pursue every possible lead. But there are challenges. Sometimes, victims are found disfigured beyond recognition or without identification documents or a cellphone that could provide investigators with a lead. Ghanshyam, too, wasn’t carrying any ID when he was struck by a train between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations while crossing the tracks on June 8, 2024.“Ghanshyam worked as a guard alongside his father. The two would fight frequently over money,” said a police official. On June 6, Ghanshyam left Boisar and never returned. He would have likely remained an anonymous statistic if not for a friend who spotted his photo on a banner, put up by the police at Kurla railway station, and alerted his father. The banner was put up with the intention that passing commuters might recognise someone they knew.Activist Sameer Zaveri said families of victims often have no idea which authority to turn to for help. “Migrant workers perishing in railway accidents in the city may remain unidentified as their families living in their hometown thousands of kilometers away may not even be aware the accident occurred,” Zaveri said. When a victim’s identity is not known, the body is held in a morgue for seven to 10 days while the police investigate. If no claimant emerges, the victim is cremated. The police retain a photo, a piece of clothing and personal belongings in case the family is traced later. In some instances, investigators have successfully identified victims through body tattoos or tailoring tags on clothes. The CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems) and the Maharashtra Citizen’s portal have become vital tools for ascertaining identities of unknown victims. Police key in details and upload photos of unidentified deceased persons via CCTNS, a govt project to digitise crime data and link police stations across the country. These details and photos can be accessed by anyone using the portal, a digital platform to track complaints and report incidents to the police. The portal provides for a search option by date and location. On Sept 23, 2025, a male commuter in his mid-thirties died after falling from a long-distance train between Sion and Kurla stations. With no identification found on his person, police uploaded his details and photo into the CCTNS. The details were eventually seen on the portal by Odisha’s Binati Durva, while she was searching for her 36-year-old brother, Gopinath.Gopinath had travelled from Odisha to Madgaon, Goa, with friends to look for work. But he decided to head back after a day. He called his wife to say he would take a train to Mumbai and then another train to Odisha. But he was never heard from again. “We wondered if he had changed his mind about coming home or if his phone had been stolen. Even the friends were clueless,” Binati said. Odisha police informed the Durvas that a complaint could not be registered as Gopinath had gone missing in another state. An acquaintance within the police department directed the family to the Citizen’s portal. On the portal, the family spotted a photo of an individual resembling Gopinath. They then asked distant relatives in Mumbai to verify details with the GRP. “We were shocked to find out that Gopinath had fallen off a train and perished,” Binati said. She and her brother-in-law travelled to Mumbai on unreserved train tickets, carrying a note from the police for the ticket checker explaining their situation. With limited funds, they stayed overnight at a temple before claiming Gopinath’s body.

Chapter on Jinnah sparks row, Jammu University sets up probe committee | India News

Chapter on Jinnah sparks row, Jammu University sets up probe committee

JAMMU: The vice-chancellor of University of Jammu has constituted a high-level committee to examine the syllabus of political science postgraduate course after the inclusion of a chapter on political thought of Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah snowballed into a major controversy.According to an order issued by the office of the dean of academic affairs, the committee has been tasked with “thoroughly reviewing the issue and submitting its report at the earliest”. The panel will be headed by Prof Naresh Padha of physics department, and will comprise the heads of the departments of philosophy, history and sociology, and the director of Department of Strategic and Regional Studies. The assistant registrar (academic affairs) will serve as the member secretary. On Friday, ABVP activists had staged a protest at the university, demanding the withdrawal of the chapter on Jinnah. The protesters, led by ABVP’s J&K secretary Sannak Shrivats, raised slogans against the administration and warned that they would be “compelled to launch a strong democratic agitation across Jammu and Kashmir” if the content was not withdrawn.“Our govt should take note that the political science department at Jammu University has released its syllabus for 2026-2028… and certain individuals are being presented as representatives of minorities, including Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Mohammed Ali Jinnah,” said Shrivats. These are the same individuals who propounded the two-nation theory and played a role in Partition, and “teaching about them raises serious concerns”, he added.“We will wait and watch what the committee suggests. University authorities must understand that academic freedom does not mean disregard for national sentiments,” Srivats further said. The head of political science department, Prof Baljit Singh Mann, had on Friday defended the syllabus, saying the inclusion of Jinnah and others “is purely academic” and consistent with the curricula followed by universities nationwide as well as the UGC norms. “Our objective is to present different perspectives so that students can assess the merits and demerits and distinguish between right and wrong. This is an academic exercise, not advocacy,” he said.On Saturday, when asked by mediapersons, he said he had already made his stand clear, and stood by what he had stated a day earlier.

Omar Abdullah slams mosque closure on Eid, questions ‘normalcy’ claim | India News

Omar Abdullah slams mosque closure on Eid, questions ‘normalcy’ claim

SRINAGAR\JAMMU: J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah expressed grave concern Saturday over Eid prayers being blocked at Srinagar’s historic Jamia Mosque, terming it “regrettable” and questioning LG Manoj Sinha-led administration’s claims of “normality” in the Union territory.“Across J&K, Eid prayers were offered. But prayers were not allowed at Jamia Mosque. It exposes the administration that controls security and law and order. They repeatedly say the situation is completely normal. What kind of normalcy is it when permission is not given to offer prayers at Srinagar’s biggest mosque,” Omar said at Hazratbal shrine. He expressed hope that such decisions would be reviewed and people would be allowed to offer prayers freely. Under J&K’s UT arrangement since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, police and security fall under LG Sinha’s jurisdiction.Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of Kashmir who delivers sermons at Jamia Mosque, said he was placed under house arrest and the shrine was locked. Sharing pictures on X of the locked mosque, Mirwaiz pointed out that this was the seventh year of restrictions. “A day of celebration turned to grief and denial for Muslims. It’s an irony of our times that those who lock our mosques and Eidgahs are the first to wish us Eid Mubarak,” Mirwaiz wrote.LG Sinha was among the key public figures, apart from CM Omar, who extended Eid greetings to people. “The sacred festival embodies the noble spirit of sacrifice and the joy of sharing. May Eid usher in peace, prosperity and happiness for all,” the LG posted.Mirwaiz said he was placed under house arrest on Friday, with the authorities “choking lanes and bylanes with concertina wire and disallowing movement”. Since his release in Sept 2023 after four years of house arrest following Article 370’s scrapping, Mirwaiz has faced frequent restrictions, with the police detaining him at home ahead of Friday prayers and Eid.This time, J&K Police did not comment on the curbs, only saying prayers in Srinagar were held peacefully and urging people to celebrate with responsibility. In Jammu, though, the festival was marked by fervour, traditional gaiety and special prayers for an end to the West Asia conflict.People in festive attire thronged various sites. The main congregation was held at Eidgah, where thousands offered Eid namaz. Rattan Lal Gupta, Jammu chief of CM Omar’s National Conference (NC), visited the site, emphasising the region’s tradition of communal amity.NC MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri lamented that global conflicts have led to rising prices and hardships. “We pray that wisdom prevails, the (Iran) war ends, and people get relief from suffering. We also pray for peace and brotherhood in our country,” Veeri said.

BMC hopes to change civic engagement by launching ‘Participate Mumbai’ | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Ever wanted to teach painting, music or karate to municipal school students but didn’t know where to start? Or, as a corporate, looked to contribute to public spaces, healthcare or education but found no clear entry point?Starting April 2026, the BMC hopes to change that with the launch of its flagship civic engagement platform, “Participate Mumbai.” The initiative aims to bring citizens, institutions and corporates onto a single platform to contribute to the city’s development — from volunteering time and skills to supporting projects through in-kind orporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions.A dedicated digital portal will allow users to browse projects, submit proposals and sign up for volunteering opportunities, without the need to make any visits to ward offices. According to a civic circular issued on March 18, “In order to ensure structured coordination, transparency, and centralised monitoring of CSR initiatives undertaken in collaboration with the BMC, it has been decided that all CSR-related proposals and volunteering engagements shall be routed through the “Participate Mumbai” platform. Accordingly, all assistant commissioners, zonal deputy municipal commissioners, and concerned heads of departments are requested to ensure that CSR proposals received from corporate entities pertaining to provision of materials, services, equipment, infrastructure support to BMC institutions, or volunteering engagements are submitted in the prescribed formats and processed through the Participate Mumbai Cell.”Officials said a preliminary assessment indicates that nearly Rs 3,000 crore in CSR funds is available in Mumbai, which the civic body hopes to tap through the initiative.“This is essentially a marketplace we are creating. Once registered, applicants who wish to contribute or offer their time by teaching a skill maybe will be given a time slot and assigned a designated officer to take the proposal forward, cutting down on multiple rounds,” said Prashant Sapkale, deputy municipal commissioner (Zone 2). With approvals in place, the platform is slated to go live in April. The BMC is also considering a ‘wall of fame’ at its headquarters to recognise companies that make significant contributions. It may be recollected that on March 15, Mumbai BJP president MLA Ameet Satam wrote to Mumbai mayor Ritu Tawde and municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, urging the BMC to create a dedicated CSR dashboard or a platform on its website that would give philanthropic organisations and individuals an opportunity to contribute.

Ex-Team India Batter makes bold prediction on Shubman Gill ahead of IPL 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sidelined Shubman Gill from the T20I format despite assigning him the captain for the other two formats of the game. The decision to exclude Gill from the T20 International format was considered a bold statement by the national team selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar.

BCCI might have taken a significant decision to find out the best possible playing combination for the format, but for Gill, it could have hurt his pride. Former India cricketer, now a cricket expert and commentator, Cheteshwar Pujara believes that Gill could be on a different level as a batter in the upcoming IPL 2026, starting on March 28.

BCCI dropped Shubman Gill from T20Is ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026

Shubman Gill last featured in the T20I for India on December 14, 2025, against South Africa in Dharamshala. As the board assigned him to the Test and ODI formats, fans were expecting to see him in the T20Is as well. Proving most of the fans wrong, BCCI went on to win the T20 World Cup 2026 without the top-order batter.

While Gill’s batting credibility remains beyond question, it was the strike rate that was considered one of the main reasons behind his omission from the format. If he wants to make a comeback in the T20I team again, then the IPL 2026 could be the best stage for him.

T20 World Cup squad snub will definitely fire up Shubman Gill: Shubman Gill

Pujara opined that the snub must be fired up at Shubman when he walks into the ground to play the IPL 2026 with the Gujarat Titans. The former cricketer said that if the batter performed strongly, then he would surely be named in the T20I team again.

“The T20 World Cup squad snub will definitely fire up Shubman Gill. He is a quality player suited for all three formats. If he has a good IPL 2026 season, he will surely put his name in India’s T20I squad.”

“He is leading the Test squad and is also the ODI captain. He is a multi-format player. If he has a good season, he will be back in the scheme of things for the Indian team,” Cheteshwar Pujara explained, speaking on JioHotstar’s ‘Game Plan – Know Your Team’ show.

Pujara asks Gill to increase the strike rate

Pujara suggested that Gibat with a little more intent. If he can score a significant amount of runs, under pressure, maintaining a strike rate around 160, then the selectors will bring him back into the T20I squad, Pujara said.

“There will be some pressure on him because he has not been part of the India squad in the shortest format. But at the same time, it is a great opportunity for him to carry on batting the way he has.”

“He needs to try to accelerate a little more because that is something he has been working on. This IPL season is the perfect one for him to show he can bat at a strike rate of 150 to 160,” Pujara added,” he added.
