Teen girl robbed of phone, raped at railway yard near Mumbai; CCTV trail helps GRP nab accused

KALYAN: A 21-year-old jobless man has been arrested for allegedly coercing a 14 year-old girl into accompanying him to the secluded and dimly lit Kalyan railway yard and raping her.GRP officials said the girl, a resident of Ahilyanagar, arrived at Kalyan on Saturday and was waiting at a platform around 5pm to catch a train to Khopoli, where her uncle resides. In her complaint, she said the accused, Saurabh Sonawane, befriended her and mid-conversation, snatched her phone. When she pleaded for it, he allegedly intimidated her and said she must accompany him to the Kalyan GRP station to retrieve it. However, he instead took her to the yard, where he allegedly assaulted her.Kalyan Government Railway Police (GRP), in a joint operation with Railway Crime Branch, tracked down and arrested Sonawane within hours of the crime after scanning CCTV footage of the platforms and yard area and identifying him.The GRP have booked Sonawane under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Pandarinath Kande, senior police inspector of Kalyan GRP, said, “The accused is unemployed and has a previous case of assault registered against him at Kolsewadi police station.”Saturday’s incident has once again trained the spotlight on the abysmal state of passenger safety, especially for women and minors, within railway premises. In June 2011, a 17-year-old girl was raped by three unidentified men on Kalyan station premises in the presence of her male friend, who was held hostage at knife-point.(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)

In a major safety exercise, the civic body has started issuing notices to residents living in extremely dangerous structures, directing them to vacate the premises to avoid any untoward incidents during heavy rains.According to KDMC officials, a total of 451 buildings across the twin-city have been classified as dangerous, out of which 225 buildings have been marked as “extremely dangerous.” Civic authorities fear that these structures may pose a serious threat to life and property during the monsoon.Officials said structural auditors and engineers have inspected several old and dilapidated buildings and recommended immediate repairs in many cases. Shiv Sena, BJP end 5-month AMC power struggle, forge alliance in Maharashtra’s Ambernath

AMBERNATH: Ending nearly five months of political confrontation, the Shiv Sena and BJP on Thursday announced an alliance in the Ambernath Municipal Council (AMC), saying the decision was taken in the interest of the city’s development. The alliance comes shortly after the district collector ruled in favour of the Shiv Sena-NCP group in the ongoing power struggle within the civic body, a decision that strengthened Shiv Sena’s position and dealt a setback to the BJP. Despite gaining an upper hand after the verdict, Shiv Sena leaders said they were willing to put aside political differences to ensure smooth functioning of the municipal council. The announcement was made during a joint press conference by BJP Kalyan district president Nandu Parab and Shiv Sena Kalyan district president Gopal Landge in the presence of senior local leaders from both parties.“Like at the state and national level, we have decided to come together in Ambernath as well. Except for a few subject committees, the power-sharing formula has largely been finalised,” said Parab.Parab said a few pending issues regarding committee allocations will be resolved after discussions with senior party leadership.Following the municipal elections, both parties had been engaged in an intense battle for control of the council, with shifting political equations involving factions of the NCP and Congress. The prolonged tussle had allegedly affected administrative functioning and delayed civic projects. With support from four NCP corporators, Shiv Sena now claims the backing of 32 corporators, while BJP’s strength stands at 27. Expressing displeasure over the alliance, Shiv Sena Ambernath city chief Arvind Walekar said that the BJP should have formed an alliance with Shiv Sena before the elections, but they did not do so. Instead, after the polls, the BJP joined hands with its staunch rival Congress to establish power in the municipal council, which, he said, sent a wrong message across the country. He further stated that if Shiv Sena leaders were expected to ally with the BJP now, all party corporators should have first been taken into confidence before making such a decision.Despite internal differences among some local Sena corporators over the alliance, leaders from both parties maintained that development of Ambernath would remain the top priority.

Rs 100-crore MD drug manufacturing plot foiled by Mumbai Police (Representative image)

THANE: Mumbai Police have busted a synthetic drug manufacturing network and seized raw materials and chemicals worth Rs 4 lakh that could have been used to produce mephedrone (MD) valued at nearly Rs 100 crore, officials said on Tuesday. Officials said the seizure thwarted an alleged plan by drug peddlers to flood the market with synthetic narcotics. The crackdown stemmed from an investigation launched early last month into a mephedrone trafficking network. Subsequent raids at Saman Nagari and Azmi Nagar in Malwani, and Mauje Manori in Gorai, led to the recovery of chemicals and manufacturing equipment collectively worth Rs 4 lakh, police said. Their estimated market value as finished MD products would have touched Rs 100 crore, claimed Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar crime unit senior police inspector Pramod Badakh. “Had the police limited the investigation to mere arrests and failed to probe further, this raw material would have been processed into finished MD and distributed through peddlers,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Doiphode said. Police said they have so far seized 6.773 kg of MD valued at Rs 13.61 crore. The haul included 255 litres of medicinal chemicals, sodium hydroxide pellets, hydrochloric acid, acetone, dichloromethane, melamine, chloroform and specialised laboratory equipment such as heating mantles, flasks, recovery flasks and addition pots. The total seizure is valued at Rs 13.65 crore. Thirteen persons, including two women, have been arrested in the case so far, officials said. The operation began on April 4 after a raid in the Nayanagar area of Mira Road in Thane district led to the recovery of 1.32 kg of MD worth Rs 2.66 crore from a woman identified as Firdos Arbaz Qureshi, police said. Investigators said the interrogation of Firdos and her husband, Arbaz Vakil Qureshi, exposed a wider drug network, leading to multiple arrests. All the accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Developer seeks Euthanasia, alleges political pressure in firing case | Thane News

THANE: An Ambernath-based developer, whose office was targeted in a firing incident last year, has written to the President of India seeking permission for euthanasia, alleging that the police have failed to properly investigate the case and are shielding a BJP MLA whose name surfaced in allegations made by jailed gangster Ejaz Lakdawala.Builder Vishwanath Panvelkar (72), in his letter, claimed that despite the firing outside his office in April 2025 and subsequent allegations made by Lakdawala from jail, there has been no meaningful progress in the probe. Panvelkar alleged that he and his family continue to face threats to their lives and are living under constant fear and mental harassment.Panvelkar further alleged that the police have neither taken stringent action in the case nor provided security to his family due to political pressure. He accused BJP MLA Kisan Kathore of deliberately creating hurdles in his business activities and using influence to harass him over a land dispute near Badlapur railway station. The matter drew fresh attention last month after Lakdawala, in a letter addressed to the Thane Police from jail, claimed that he had been approached with a contract to eliminate Panvelkar. According to the gangster’s letter, three associates allegedly linked to Kathore met him on court premises and offered him money to carry out the killing. Lakdawala also claimed that the alleged conspiracy was connected to the ongoing land dispute involving the developer.Lakdawala in letter has also expressed willingness to record a formal statement in the matter, subject to court permission. In his communication to the President, Panvelkar referred to Lakdawala’s claims and questioned why no strong action had been initiated despite such serious allegations. Stating that the continued fear, pressure and mental stress had become unbearable, he sought permission for euthanasia for himself and his family.Earlier, after Lakdawala’s letter first surfaced, Panvelkar had addressed a press conference demanding that police take cognisance of the gangster’s allegations and initiate action.Reacting to the latest allegations, Kathore denied all charges and said Panvelkar is making false accusations to defame him. He declined to comment further, saying he would respond “at the appropriate time”.Assistant Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kale said, “The case is under investigation and the crime branch is probing the matter.”

Kalyan flyover girder launched using Malaysian concrete tech | Thane News

KALYAN: In a major step towards easing chronic traffic congestion outside Kalyan railway station, authorities have completed the launching of the final girder for the most crucial and longest of the three flyovers under the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS).The 1,125-metre-long structure has been built using advanced Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC), a Malaysian technology recently used in Mumbai-Pune Missing Link project. The flyover is part of the ‘Kalyan West Station Area Improvement’ project being executed by the Smart Kalyan Dombivli Development Corporation Ltd. Stretching from Subhash Chandra Bose Chowk to Bailbazar Chowk, the structure has a variable width ranging between 9 and 18 metres. Officials said the project is now in its final stage and is expected to significantly decongest the busy station area. The structural design and proof-checking for the project have been carried out with technical support from IIT Bombay, ensuring enhanced safety and durability. One of the key challenges during execution was the existing foot overbridge at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Chowk (Entry Gate No. 1), which caters to heavy pedestrian movement. Dismantling it was not feasible. Engineers, therefore, opted for UHPFRC technology, enabling safe girder launching without disrupting commuter flow. The operation was carried out late at night in the presence of mayor Harshali Choudhary, KDMC commissioner Abhinav Goel, city engineer Anita Pardeshi and executive engineer Rohini Lokare, along with project consultants and contractors.Goel said UHPFRC is significantly stronger and more durable than conventional concrete, offering compressive strength five to six times higher. Its dense composition makes it resistant to weathering and pollution, extending the lifespan of structures beyond 100 years.Construction on other two flyovers under SATIS project is also nearing completion. All three flyovers will be interconnected.
