NEW DELHI: Police have registered a case after three women from Arunachal Pradesh alleged they were subjected to racial abuse and criminal intimidation by a couple in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. The incident came to light after a video surfaced on social media on Sunday.
According to police, the incident took place at around 3.30 pm on Friday when the women were getting electrical installation work done at their rented accommodation.
Dispute during installation work
During the work, some dirt allegedly fell onto the premises of the couple living on the floor below, leading to an argument.The women had called an electrician to their fourth-floor rented flat to install an air conditioner.In a video shared by news agency ANI, one of the victims said, “My air conditioner was getting fixed when dust fell on the first floor, they (the people on the first floor) used abusive words towards our electrician. We defended him. He then started using abusive words regarding the Northeast. Later, he called the police, and we argued. ‘Have you opened a massage parlour at home?’
Speaking to PTI, one of the women said, “Instead of talking about the main issue, they started targeting northeast. They kept saying that northeastern people are illiterate. We do ‘dhandhebazi’ (sex work) for Rs 500. They even threatened to beat me up.”“Are you sitting here to do business? Have you opened a massage parlour at home?” the accused woman said. The accused woman was also seen saying that the man they are talking to is a son of a “big politician”.Police confirmed that a case has been registered against the couple at Malviya Nagar police station.Advocate Gaurav, representing the couple, said, “They have been living together for a long time. Even after the incident, they sat together to reach a compromise. The matter is being unnecessarily exaggerated on social media. In the video, both sides are speaking. The video being circulated is selective and manipulative.”He added, “In the heat of the moment he uttered something and my client regrets the words he used. It was my client who had called the PCR, and the police were present at the spot.”Police said the matter is under investigation.
