Thane: Over 700 trees on the vast premises of Thane Regional Mental Hospital campus are likely to be removed from the 63-acre campus to accommodate the reconstruction of the ageing facility.Thane Municipal Corporation’s (TMC) tree authority has sought objections from residents after the Public Works Department (PWD) recently sought permission to displace the trees apparently coming in the way of the project. According to the notice issued by TMC, around 303 of the 724 trees likely to be displaced will have to be axed, while the rest will be transplanted. There are a total of 1,600 indigenous trees on the campus presently.Meanwhile, following the resistance shown by tree lovers in Tapovan, Nashik, local green activists from Thane have also expressed concerns over the plans that could possibly remove nearly half of the green cover from the vast campus.
