Mumbai: The state govt on Monday appointed Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar as Chairperson of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC). The General Administration Department (GAD) issued a notification. Former Director General of Police (DGP) Rajnish Seth was the current chairman of MPSC. He was appointed in 2023. Bhimanwar is an IAS officer of the 2009 batch and is due to retire in Feb 2026.Till Bhimanwar assumes charge as Chairman, Dr Abhay Wagh, Member, MPSC, was given the additional charge of the Chairperson.“The Governor made this appointment under Article 316(1) of the Constitution of India, and Bhimanwar will hold office for a period of 6 years from the date of assuming charge as Chairman or till he attains the age of 62 years (whichever is earlier),” the notification stated.Bhimanwar was appointed Transport Commissioner in September 2022. He was private secretary to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis during his stint.MPSC is an autonomous body constituted and set up under Article 315 of the Constitution. It recommends suitable candidates for the various posts under the state govt and advises govt on various service matters, such as the formulation of recruitment rules, promotions, transfers, and disciplinary proceedings. It was entrusted with major functions such as conducting examinations for appointments to the services of the state govt. It also conducts examinations for posts in BMC which are equivalent to or higher than the post of executive engineer, and in BEST.
