China’s burgeoning humanoid robotics sector, recently anointed a key economic catalyst by the Communist Party, is said to be attracting such an intense wave of investment that it is beginning to make Beijing uneasy. According to a report in Bloomberg, China’s powerful economic-planning agency has warned of the risks of a bubble forming in the country’s humanoid robotics industry, issuing a rare official expression of concern about a pivotal sphere of technology. The warning comes from China’s National Development and Reform Commission, which sets economic strategy and shifts in policy. The agency has called attention to the proliferation of remarkably similar robots from more than 150 companies in the same field. Agency spokeswoman Li Chao told Bloomberg that it is important for the country to prevent this flood of humanoid robots from overwhelming the market and squeezing out real research and development initiatives. “Frontier industries have long grappled with the challenge of balancing the speed of growth against the risk of bubbles — an issue now confronting the humanoid robot sector as well,” Li added.The Chinese government’s call for increased vigilance reflects growing anxiety over potential over-investment, an issue that has plagued past Chinese tech booms like bike-sharing and semiconductors, often resulting in market shakeups and consolidation. The development and funding frenzy has skyrocketed following Unitree Robotics’ viral performance during the Spring Festival Gala earlier this year, where its dancing droids captivated a nationwide audience. This surge in interest aligns with the ruling Communist Party’s new guidelines, which designated the humanoid robotics industry as one of six critical new economic growth drivers for China’s development plan through 2030.Investor enthusiasm is palpable. The Bloomberg report notes that the Solactive China Humanoid Robotics Index—which tracks the shares of robot-related companies—is up nearly 30% this year. Industry leader UBTech Robotics Corp., a potential beneficiary of any market consolidation, saw its shares gain more than 4% on Friday. Citigroup Inc. has projected the market could swell to $7 trillion by 2050, though widespread adoption of these robots in homes and factories is still considered years away. In 2023, China reportedly installed over 290,000 industrial robots, more than the rest of the world combined, with robot density reaching 470 robots per 10,000 workers, surpassing Japan and Germany for the first time.The sector’s profile has been further elevated by key government endorsements. Unitree founder Wang Xingxing secured a front-row seat at a seminal meeting in February with President Xi Jinping and other prominent tech leaders, including Jack Ma. Since then, droids from fast-growing startups such as AgiBot and Galbot have become social media sensations, showcasing capabilities like running marathons, kickboxing, and making coffee.The government’s plan, according to the official, is two-fold: accelerating research and development of core technologies while simultaneously supporting the construction of essential training and testing infrastructure. Furthermore, Beijing intends to “promote the consolidation and sharing of technology and industrial resources in the sector across the nation,” in a bid to hasten the real-world application of humanoid robots.

Mumbai: Over 1 lakh animal lovers from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and other cities and towns across India simultaneously sent speed post letters to the Supreme Court in an urgent, coordinated appeal to save the stray dogs from “cruel and unscientific relocations” to shelters.The signed letters sent to the apex court on Saturday morning from GPOs and various post offices contained a copy of a draft appeal prepared by a group of animal activists urging the judges to revert the Nov 7 order to relocate stray dogs to shelters, since there side of interventionists has not been heard yet, and also it is unscientific and cruel to send healthy, vaccinated dogs to caged shelters. “We are thankful to the over 1 lakh citizens who ensured that they reach their respective GPOs from Anantnag in J&K to Kanyakumari in the south of India to send this urgent appeal to the SC to save our stray dogs. We will continue to legally fight for the street dogs in our democratic set-up for animal welfare,” said Ambika Shukla of People for Animals (PFA).From Mumbai, celebrities such as actor and entertainer Cyrus Broacha also sent a speed post to SC. The animal rights activists reiterated that healthy, vaccinated and sterilized dogs should be allowed to freely live in their areas, and not confined in shelters — also there aren’t enough shelters to put all the stray dogs in. Hence it can lead to diseases and deaths for stray dogs in they are cruelly relocated.On Saturday evening, over 300 animal feeders and activists of Pasujeeva – The Soulful Love Foundation, held a peaceful demonstration at Versova in suburban Mumbai on the stray dogs issue, while stressing that proper sterilization, vaccination and care is the only humane way to control canine numbers and keep them healthy.Earlier, the students and teachers of IIT-Bombay campus at Powai campus had started an e-drive to urge the authorities that they want to co-exist with the dogs, and not send them to any obscure or non-existent shelter. The Marmik Animal Welfare Foundation founder, Manasi Dikshit, who also sent a letter to the SC, said: “There are no proper animal shelters for dogs within BMC area, so where will the authorities take all our street dogs? It is impractical to relocate them.“

NEW DELHI: The prospect of disruption looms over an already truncated winter session of Parliament as a united opposition on Sunday pressed for a discussion on SIR, an issue that had all but washed out the previous session, as govt remained non-committal to its demand.At an all-party meeting chaired by defence minister Rajnath Singh, Congress and a host of other opposition parties also sought debate on several other issues, including national security following the Delhi blast, and rising air pollution, but the nationwide Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls emerged as their rallying point.Ram Gopal Yadav of SP, whose contingent of 37 Lok Sabha members is the second largest in the opposition, sent out an ominous message as the 19-day session covering 15 sitting begins Monday. “We will not allow Parliament to function if a discussion is not held on SIR,” he said, alleging the review of rolls is marred by irregularities and that some booth-level officers ended their lives due to stress. Many SP lawmakers, including him, have been put on “C category” (requiring more documentation), as a targeted segment of voters is being deleted from rolls, he claimed.Parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju told the opposition that he would get back to them on their demand after consulting key govt functionaries, but gave no assurance. Rijiju had in the last session cited a ruling by then LS Speaker Balram Jakhar in 1988, when Congress was in office, that the House could not debate decisions and functioning of Election Commission to reject opposition’s demand for a discussion on SIR.The opposition’s protest had washed out LS and Rajya Sabha proceedings, except for a discussion on Operation Sindoor, in that session.At Sunday’s meeting, BJP ally and JDU working president Sanjay Jha made light of the opposition’s case against SIR by highlighting that its strident stand cut little ice with people in Bihar, the first state where it was carried out, and no voter or political party came forward with any official complaint.In the meeting attended by 50 representatives from 36 parties, govt shared 14 items, including 13 bills, of its tentative agenda and sought the opposition’s support. Rijiju conveyed govt’s keenness on a discussion of Vande Mataram, the national song whose 150th anniversary was observed with much fervour recently by BJP-led NDA.Congress later held a strategy meet of its key leaders with sources saying the party was veering to the stand that the demand for a SIR discussion was non-negotiable.In business advisory meetings of LS and RS, in which govt and opposition functionaries work out Parliament’s agenda, the deadlock remained. Some opposition members, including CPM’s John Brittas, suggested a short-duration discussion on electoral reforms to get around govt’s unwillingness to discuss SIR as the issue can also cover the ongoing exercise in 12 states and UTs.
