NEW DELHI: The Centre has decided to end the subsidy for electric three-wheelers after it met the target of 2.9 vehicles under PM e-Drive on Friday. In the three-wheeler segment, EV penetration is estimated at around 32%, which is in line with the target the Centre had set for itself, and is now leaving it to the states to provide encouragement. “The idea was to take the number to 20-30% and that has been achieved, even the industry is okay with it,” said an official. In case of two-wheelers, however, the penetration is pegged at 7.5% and support for electric two-wheelers may, however, stretch into the next financial year and a call on further support will be taken at the start of the new year. Currently, against a target of nearly 25 lakh units, 18.3 lakh EV two-wheelers have been sold with the number likely to be around 23 lakh by the end of the current fiscal year, resulting in a spillover into the new financial year. While this segment may need further boost, the Centre is now seen to be passing the baton to the states, several of which are contemplating schemes and incentives. Delhi, which has to tackle smog and poor air quality annually, is among those that are expected to announce a package next month. There are several states, which offer registration and other benefits to vehicles with penetration remaining low in the four-wheeler category. When it comes to electric buses and trucks, the PM e-Drive scheme has not seen any demand yet as vehicles are still being tested. In its calculations, govt has provided for support to 14,000 electric buses and 5,643 trucks under PM e-Drive. Auto industry executives said that charging infrastructure is an area where there is need for attention, where a set of service providers will have to step in.

This was a slight uptick from the film’s fourth Monday collection of Rs 10.50 crore India net. With this, the film’s total domestic net collection has crossed Rs 712.25 crore in just 26 days.

‘Dhurandhar’ occupancy

On Monday, ‘Dhurandhar’ recorded an overall Hindi occupancy of 23.31% with morning shows starting slow with an estimated 13.18% occupancy and evening shows recording the highest footfalls at 27.64%.

‘Dhurandhar’ week-wise collections

The film reportedly earned an estimated Rs 207.25 crore in week one and saw good growth at the box office in week two, earning its highest collections thus far, with a total earning of Rs 253.25 Crore. Week 3 saw the film’s earnings take a dip with a box office estimate of Rs 172 crore. Meanwhile, the current total of week 4 currently stands at an estimated Rs 79.75 crore. With the New Year’s break coming up, it is only a matter of time before the film breaks past the Rs 100 crore mark for the fourth consecutive week.

‘Dhurandhar’ gross collections

‘Dhurandhar’, which already has the highest net collection, also happens to be the biggest Bollywood grosser of all time, with its gross collections hitting a total of Rs 854.75 crore. With 2 more days still to go before it wraps up another week, it remains to be seen just how far it can push the total.

The film’s overseas box office collections have also impressed all with a total of Rs 240.75 crore. With this, the film’s worldwide cumulative total stands at an estimated Rs 1095.5 crore, just a little shy of breaking into the Rs 1100 crore mark. As per the film’s production house, ‘Dhurandhar’ has seen higher collections with a net total of Rs 741.90 crore. While the total worldwide total reportedly shot past the Rs 1100 mark on Monday.

The film is now chasing the Rs 1160 crore lifetime collections of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jawan’. NEW DELHI: If a citizen faces a legal emergency or is threatened with arrest by probe agencies at unearthly hours, the person will be able to seek a hearing from constitutional courts even in the dead of night for protection of fundamental rights and liberties, the Chief Justice of India said. “My endeavour is and will be to make the Supreme Court and high courts people’s courts which can be approached at any time beyond working hours in legal emergencies,” CJI Surya Kant told TOI. The CJI said one of his priorities is to set up as many constitution benches as possible to deal with pending petitions raising several important constitutional issues – like the one thrown up by a bunch of petitions challenging validity of special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which started from Bihar and is now being carried out in a dozen states. The bench on SIR would take up the issues after conclusion of the countrywide updation of electoral rolls.

‘Want approachable people’s courts’

CJI Kant said he would also examine the feasibility of setting up a nine-judge bench to decide many petitions that articulate the clash between religious freedom and women’s rights. The issue arises in three categories of cases, including petitions seeking review of the SC order allowing women of all ages into Sabarimala temple. By custom, women of menstruating age were barred from going inside Sabarimala shrine. Another set of pleas challenge the practice of female genital mutilation among Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community and the ban on entry of women into mosques, and, the third set question denial of entry into Agiary (Zoroastrian temple) of Parsi women who marry outside the community.Now, lawyers can’t argue for days in high-stake cases In another significant development, it would no longer be permissible for renowned lawyers to argue for days together in high-stake matters. CJI Surya Kant has decided to enforce strict timelines for advocates to complete arguments. “The constitutional courts will function like hospitals with emergency wards. In case of a legal emergency, a citizen, irrespective of status, can knock on the doors of Supreme Court even at midnight to seek redress of an urgent grievance and seek protection of individual rights and liberty,” CJI Kant said. There will never be another case like the one arising from settlement dispute between Ambani brothers in which lawyers argued for 26 days in SC. “This is to ensure that poor litigants not only get free legal assistance but also an equal share of court time during hearing of their cases,” the CJI said. Apart from mandatory submission of written submissions not exceeding five pages at least three days prior to the hearing, SC has issued a circular saying, “Senior advocates, arguing counsel and/or advocate-on-record, shall submit the timelines for making oral arguments in all post-notice and regular hearing matters, at least a day prior to the commencement of the hearing of the case.” To speed up hearing in pending cases, the CJI said, “Various special categories have been identified for priority listing to send a message that Supreme Court is a people’s court.”

A students’ group in Bangladesh protests against the killing of Dipu Das

LONDON: The UK govt has for the first time condemned the two recent murders by mobs of Hindus in Bangladesh.Whitehall sources told TOI that the UK govt “condemns the murders of Dipu Chandra Das and Amrit Mondal. We extend our condolences to their families and friends.”Das (27), a Bangladeshi Hindu garment factory worker, was handed over to an enraged mob on Dec 18 in Mymensingh over fake blasphemy allegations. They killed him, tied him to a tree and set him on fire. The extreme brutality of the killing, which happened during unrest over the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, sparked protests across India.Whitehall sources said the UK govt “welcomes the 12 arrests that have been made” in the Das case. “We welcome the public commitments made by Prof Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim head of govt, to the safety of minorities,” the sources added.Another Hindu, Amrit Mondal (29), was beaten to death by villagers on Dec 24 in Rajbari district. Bangladesh’s govt claims he was a criminal who had gone there to extort money.Westminster sources told TOI: “The UK is committed to defending freedom of religion or belief. Right-wing mob at Bareilly cafe

Bareilly: Three days after her private birthday party with friends, including two Muslim male students, at a Bareilly café was stormed by vigilantes over allegations of ‘love jihad’, a 22-year-old final-year nursing student from Badaun said she has not stepped out of her relative’s home and is struggling with fear and embarrassment. Speaking to TOI on Tuesday, she said the assault on her friends has left her questioning whether she must now “choose friends based on religion”.On Dec 27, around two dozen men, purportedly from right-wing groups, barged into the city café and allegedly assaulted her friends while raising ‘love jihad’ slogans. Five people have been arrested so far, police said, but the key accused, Rishabh Thakur and Deepak Pathak, are yet to be held.“I feel deeply ashamed that my friends were harassed and assaulted for their faith. I’m afraid to even leave the house alone. It has ruined my image everywhere,” she said. “Who gave these men the right to decide who I should be friends with?”She said she had organised the party only after taking permission from her parents, who never objected to her friendships. “They know who my friends are. If they have no objection, then who are these men to try to guide me?” she asked, adding that neither her upbringing nor her profession teaches her to judge or differentiate between people.The woman, originally from Badaun and currently staying with her aunt in Bareilly, said she left her institute hostel after the incident, which triggered sharp reactions from both sides on social media platforms.“Police should find out who tipped them off. Everyone on social media is saying that I was part of ‘love jihad’,” she said. “I would kill myself if no strict action is taken against those men, and they will be responsible for it.”Initially, local police issued a fine against the Muslim students and the café owner for “breach of peace”, while no immediate action was taken against the perpetrators. BNSS sections 170 (empowers police to make preventive arrests without a magistrate’s order or a warrant), 126 (security for keeping peace in other cases) and 135 (inquiry into truth of information) were registered against the two students, who were later released after preventive action, circle officer Ashutosh Shivam had said.The case took a turn only after a section of social media on Sunday sharply criticised the handling of the sensitive matter. Hours later, Bareilly SP (city) Manush Pareek said those seen attacking inside the café had been identified, and an FIR was registered under BNS sections 333 (house trespass), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult), 351 (criminal intimidation) and 191 (rioting).On Monday, police arrested Prince Singh, 19; Aakash, 21; Ashish Kumar, 26; Mridul Dubey, 22; and Deepak, 19, in connection with the case.

Fast-moving consumer goods distributors’ body AICPDF has urged the market regulator Sebi to pause the Initial Public Offerings (IPO) of loss-making quick-commerce companies. In a representation, the All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) has urged Sebi “to consider immediate measures including a temporary pause on IPO approvals” for quick-commerce and closely related e-commerce companies until ongoing proceedings in the Competition Commission of India are conclusively resolved. It has urged the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to take urgent regulatory action to protect small retail investors and India’s retail trade ecosystem from the risks posed by loss-making quick-commerce and e-commerce companies seeking public listings, said AICPDF, which claims to represent over 4.5 lakh distributors and more than 1.3 crore kirana and retail outlets across India. “Several quick-commerce companies continue to operate with large cumulative losses, negative operating cash flows, and unproven unit-level profitability. Their business models are sustained primarily through repeated infusions of private capital, which are used to fund consumer subsidies, discounts, and capital-intensive dark-store and logistics infrastructure,” it said. Despite the absence of demonstrated profitability, valuations are often built on gross merchandise value and market share rather than earnings or free cash flow, AICPDF added. Recent listings in the sector by Zomato and Swiggy illustrate this trend. “Both companies listed after years of sustained losses, with IPO structures allowing significant exits by early shareholders. Large venture and institutional investors monetised their stakes either at the time of listing or through post-listing sales, even as the companies continued to report substantial losses and negative operating cash flows,” it said. AICPDF has already filed formal complaints before the Competition Commission of India (CCI) alleging predatory pricing and anti-competitive conduct by quick-commerce platforms. “These proceedings remain active and unresolved, with the CCI having sought additional evidence. Proceeding with IPO approvals while competition-law investigations are ongoing raises serious concerns regarding material disclosure, regulatory arbitrage, and investor protection,” it said. Their business models are sustained primarily through repeated infusions of private capital, which are used to fund consumer subsidies, discounts, and capital-intensive dark-store and logistics infrastructure. Despite the absence of demonstrated profitability, valuations are often built on gross merchandise value and market share rather than earnings or free cash flow. “India’s capital markets must not become exit routes for business models that are structurally loss-making and sustained only by continuous cash burn. When early investors exit through IPOs while losses persist, the risk is unfairly transferred to small retail investors. “At the same time, predatory pricing funded through investor money is destroying lakhs of kirana livelihoods. Sebi has a constitutional responsibility to ensure transparency, fairness, and investor protection. We urge the regulator to intervene decisively before irreversible damage is done to both investors and India’s retail ecosystem,” said Dhairyashil Patil, National President, AICPDF. PTI
