'If they don't behave': Is second strike on Venezuela off the table? Trump's fresh warning

US President Donald Trump late Sunday issued another stern warning to Venezuela that US will conduct another strike “if they don’t behave.”This comes after strong military action by America on Venezuela, capturing its President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores on Saturday, hours after a dramatic US military operation in Carcas.Maduro and his wife are being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Centre and will face federal charges and trial on grounds of drug trafficking and working with cartels. The pair have been charged in the Southern District of New York with conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, cocaine importation, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess those weapons.Maduro has repeatedly rejected allegations that he is a cartel leader, accusing the US of using its “war on drugs” as a pretext to target Venezuela’s vast oil reserves, estimated at about 303 billion barrels, nearly one-fifth of the world’s total, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

'If they release me': Mustafizur Rahim breaks silence after IPL release

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman has reacted to his release from the Indian Premier League (IPL) by the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).His reaction came before the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday resolved that the national team will not travel to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The decision was taken at a meeting held on Sunday afternoon. The matter was discussed against the backdrop of Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL. BCB directors had earlier met online on Saturday night to discuss the issue. At that stage, most directors were not in favour of taking any strict step. However, following intervention from the Bangladesh government, the board reviewed its position and changed its decision. What BCB said“The Board reviewed the situation in detail, taking into account developments over the last 24 hours and expressed deep concern over the overall circumstances surrounding the participation of the Bangladesh National Team in matches scheduled to be played in India,” the BCB said in an official release.“Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India and considering the advice from the Bangladesh Government, the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh National Team will not travel to India for the tournament under the current conditions,” the statement added. The BCB has also requested that Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches be moved out of India. “In light of this decision, the BCB has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC), as the event authority, to consider relocating all of Bangladesh’s matches to a venue outside India,” the board said. The decision followed Mustafizur Rahman’s release by IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), amid rising diplomatic tension between India and Bangladesh.Reacting to the development, Mustafizur said, “If they release me, there’s nothing much I can do,” while speaking to BDCrictime.KKR had signed the 30-year-old left-arm pacer for Rs 9.20 crore at the players’ auction last month. Posts in general category also open to quota candidates: Supreme Court | India News

Posts in general category also open to quota candidates: Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has ruled that candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections are entitled to general category posts if they secure the cutoff marks stipulated for general category. The ruling by a bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine G Masih was inspired by SC’s landmark verdict in the Indra Sawhney case of 1992 which had granted 27% reservation to OBCs in govt jobs. The bench dismissed a petition by Rajasthan HC which, while recruiting candidates for certain posts, had barred reserved category candidates from getting appointed against general category posts despite securing more marks than the cutoff fixed for general category. When an HC division bench ruled in favour of reserved category candidates who wanted to be considered for general category posts, HC moved SC, arguing that considering reserved category candidates for general category posts would amount to their being granted double benefit. Writing the judgment, Justice Datta said, “We hold that the word ‘open’ connotes nothing but ‘open’, meaning thereby that vacant posts which are sought to be filled by earmarking it as ‘open’ do not fall in any category.”Upholding the HC division bench’s decision, SC said, “The availability of reservation doesn’t operate as a bar for a reserved category candidate from being considered on merit against the unreserved category.”The HC recruitment process was based on a written test followed by an interview. SC said if a reserved category candidate gets more marks more than the cutoff prescribed for general category, they should be considered to be in general category while appearing for interview. If the cumulative marks fall short of the cutoff for general category, they would be considered under the reserved category to which they belonged.

NHAI flags 424 ‘telecom black spots’, urges TRAI to step in | India News

NHAI flags 424 'telecom black spots', urges TRAI to step in

NEW DELHI: Lack of mobile network coverage on highway and expressway stretches is not only causing inconvenience to commuters but is also a concern for NHAI as cellular connectivity gaps affect emergency communication to responders – such as ambulance services and patrol vehicles – in case of an incident.Flagging this, NHAI has urged telecom regulator TRAI to direct operators to improve mobile network connectivity on these sections. The authority has identified 424 such “telecom black spots” covering around 1,750km and has shared this with TRAI.TOI has learnt that NHAI chairman Satosh Kumar Yadav, in a letter to TRAI chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti, pointed out that no mobile network is adversely impacting highway operations, coordination with field units and enforcement agencies.Officials said missing mobile network is more prevalent on greenfield highways and expressways, and remote sections, including stretches of Delhi-Mumbai and Bengaluru-Chennai expressways. For instance, data shared with TRAI mentions how three stretches of Delhi-Mumbai expressway passing through Ratlam (approx 69km) has no mobile network. Similarly, the entire 51km stretch between Harda and Betul in Madhya Pradesh has no network. The list of missing mobile networks include nearly 15km of Bengaluru-Chennai expressway, 17km of Tambaram-Tindivanam section in TN, 11.8km of Warangal-Khammam section in Andhra, 10.8km of Mumbai-Vadodara expressway in Thane.NHAI has also identified around 1,665 accident-prone locations due to stray cattle movement across NHs and expressways. Officials said it has also taken up this with TRAI and proposed proactive SMS and flash SMS alerts at geo-mapped accident-prone zones, including stretches affected by stray cattle movement and other hazards.“Alerts are intended to reach users approximately 15 minutes in advance as they approach such locations. NHAI has urged TRAI to issue directions to telecom operators to facilitate these alerts free of cost, purely in the interest of road user safety. This will save several lives,” said an official.

Confusion, queues, goof-ups mark 2 months of SIR in Bengal | India News

Confusion, queues, goof-ups mark 2 months of SIR in Bengal

KOLKATA: Sunday marked two months of the SIR rollout in Bengal as people struggle to get back something as basic as their voting right amid confusion among officials over which documents are kosher, multiple orders from Election Commission, flip-flops, and innumerable goof-ups.The chaotic drive led CM Mamata Banerjee to write on Saturday to chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar to either “rectify glitches” or halt the “unplanned, arbitrary and ad-hoc” SIR of electoral rolls.Banerjee asked the CEC why Bengal was being “singled out” for “arbitrary and illegal” voter deletions. This was her fourth letter to Kumar since SIR began. Jayanti Devi (80) was one face of the confusion. Laden with a bag of medicines and documents, she stood clueless outside an SIR hearing camp at Chetla Boys’ High School in Kolkata Sunday. She was asked to come for a second hearing with an old ration card or her parents’ documents. “I cannot hear or see properly. I can hardly walk… I don’t have many documents, but I have a voter card. I have always cast my vote. Now they are saying there is a problem,” she said.Jayanti’s son said they had not been told of the EC order that voters aged 85 or more, as well as those who are sick or disabled, will not be called to such hearings. “They (EC officials) did come, but only to inform us about the hearing date. My parents moved to Chetla in 1967. She has been voting here since,” he said.At Kalighat High School, Sister John Paul of the Missionaries of Charity had to appear for a hearing for putting Sister Nirmala in the column for her “parent’s name” – the standard practice among all such orders and one acknowledged by EC.A Goan, Sister Paul came to Bengal in 2002 – the reference year for SIR in Bengal. In 2006, she had her voter and Aadhaar cards made and Sister Nirmala, then superior general of missionaries of charity, was named her guardian in the documents. “I did not have my birth certificate with me. My sister sent it to me. It’s absolute chaos,” the 46-year-old said. Around 10 nuns of the order have received hearing notices.Roma Samanta, a voter in Kolkata’s Rashbehari, got a hearing notice as her name was mixed up with a namesake from Kaliaganj in North Dinajpur district, over 400km away. “We have been living here for 30 years… Our BLO told us to write a letter to the CEO. We have come to submit that,” Samanta’s husband said.In her letter to the CEC, the CM highlighted some of these hassles. “Family register, extensively accepted as valid proof of identity during the SIR exercise in Bihar, is now reportedly being denied… such selective and unexplained exclusion of a previously accepted document raises serious concerns of discrimination and arbitrariness,” Banerjee wrote. The CM claimed residence/domicile certificates issued by state authorities were also being rejected. Calling EC insensitive, CM said even the “elderly, infirm, and seriously ill citizens are not being spared”. “Many electors are being compelled to travel 20-25km to attend hearings, which have inexplicably been centralised rather than decentralised,” she wrote.Amid the outcry, the poll panel announced 160 more SIR hearing centres, mostly in north Bengal. The new centres will be set up keeping in mind geographical constraints and distance for voters, EC officials said.

Dharamshala case accused denies ragging; also claims prof named in FIR is innocent

KULLU: One of the three accused women students in the alleged ragging and sexual harassment case at Dharamshala Govt college, in which their 19-year-old classmate died last month on December 26, denied all charges. In a video posted on social media, she claimed that neither of them was involved in ragging nor had witnessed any such harassment occurring in the college.“We were all classmates in BA first year. How is it possible that we ragged our own classmate? Also, we all belong to the Scheduled Caste community and can’t possibly harass someone who belongs to the same caste as we do. I am so puzzled and can’t understand why such allegations were made against me,” the student stated in the video. “We were told by a student that a third-year student ragged her. But that was it, and there was no proof. We knew nothing more than that,” she added. The student further alleged that the deceased was scared of her father, as he was “very strict”. In the video, she also supported the accused associate professor, saying he was innocent and had never made the victim feel uncomfortable. The teachers of the college also came out in support of the associate professor, who was suspended Saturday, two days after a police case was registered against him and the three women students. In a statement, the teachers claimed that the accused professor had an “unblemished record and impeccable integrity” and, as far as “the casteist allegations are concerned, the teacher himself belongs to the OBC category and the claims seem to be far from the truth.Acting on the complaint filed by the deceased student’s father, police registered a case against the accused associate professor and three women students under BNS Sections 75 (sexual harassment), 115(2) (causing hurt), and 3(5) (common intention), and Section 3 of Himachal Pradesh Educational Institution (Prohibition of) Ragging Act 2009.

Venezuela’s military on Sunday said it recognised Delcy Rodriguez, deputy to ousted president Nicolas Maduro, as the country’s acting leader, after US forces extracted the former head of state to face trial.Defense minister Vladimir Padrino issued a statement endorsing a Supreme Court ruling that appointed Rodriguez as acting president for 90 days, reported news agency AFP.The head of Venezuela’s military also urged the country’s population to resume their normal activities, after US forces bombed the country and seized its leader Nicolas Maduro.“I call on the people of Venezuela to resume their activities of all kinds, economic, work and education, in the coming days,” Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said in a televised address. This comes hours after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that discussions of Venezuela holding elections following Nicolas Maduro’s ouster were “premature”. He said the Trump administration was focused on ensuring the remaining leadership in Caracas enacts policy changes.Asked how soon Venezuelan elections would be following Maduro’s capture by US forces on Saturday, Rubio told NBC’s “Meet the Press”: “All of that, I think, is premature at this point.”“What we are focused on right now is all of the problems we had when Maduro was there. We still have those problems in terms of them needing to be addressed. We are going to give people an opportunity to address those challenges and those problems,” he was quoted as saying by AFP.Trump announced on Saturday that US forces had carried out a “large-scale strike” in Venezuela, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, following pre-dawn attacks on Caracas that killed at least 40 people and triggered widespread panic across the capital. After reports of multiple explosions and low-flying aircraft, Venezuelan government forces deployed nationwide and the country entered a state of national emergency. Maduro and his wife have now been indicted in New York on terrorism and drug charges, with Trump accusing Maduro of running a “narco terrorist organisation.”A photo released by Trump on his social media platform Truth Social showed Maduro in handcuffs, wearing a blacked-out mask.Attorney General Pam Bondi posted an unsealed indictment charging Maduro with narco-terrorism, cocaine importation conspiracies, and possession of machine guns, offences that carry severe prison sentences when combined with drug trafficking charges.

‘This is where we live’: Rubio responds to US need to take over Venezuelan oil; warns China, Russia, Iran

‘This is where we live’: Rubio responds to US need to take over Venezuelan oil; warns China, Russia, Iran

“This is western hemisphere. This is where we live” was the answer of US secretary of state Marco Rubio when asked what was the need to take over Venezuelan oil industry if the purpose of operation was to bring now deposed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro to justice. Rubio in an interview to NBC news on Sunday asserted that the US won’t let Western Hemisphere to be a “base of operation” for American adversaries, competitors, and rivals. “We don’t need to for the purpose of backup, we have plenty of oil. But what we are not going to allow is the oil industry of Venezuela to be run by adversaries of the United States.”He went on to question the rationale behind China, Russia and Iran’s involvement in the Venezuelan oil industry. “You have to understand, why does China need their oil? Why does Russia need their oil? Why does Iran need their oil? They are not even on this continent. This is Western Hemisphere. This is where we live – and we’re not going to allow the Western Hemisphere to be a base of operation for adversaries, competitors, and rivals of the United States. We want the proceeds of the oil of that country to benefit people of Venezuela.” He further pointed to the mass migration Venezuela has witnessed since 2014, pinning blame of it to the foreign involvement in Caracas and attributed it as the reason behind destabilizing the region“This is deeply destabilizing stuff. It’s not going to continue to happen!, he said. “They are not going to come from outside of our hemisphere, destabilize our region in our own backyard and we have to pay the price for it. Not under President Trump!” On being asked about the Congressional approval Rubio said the operation didn’t need one as it wasn’t an invasion. “This was not an action that required congressional approval… This was not an invasion. This was not an extended military operation. This was a very precise operation that required a couple of hours of action and it was a delicate operation too. It was an operation that required all of these conditions to be in place at the right time at the right place. We could not afford leaks, we could not afford anything that would have put our mission in jeopardy.
