On cards, sensors on bikes to curb distracted driving

NEW DELHI: Government is looking at a technology-based solution to curb the growing menace of two-wheeler riders using mobile phone handsets while driving or performing stunts, which contribute to road crashes. The plan involves installing touch or pressure sensors on both handlebars of two-wheelers so that if the rider’s hands are off the handle/s for more than 7-8 seconds, the vehicle would automatically begin to de-accelerate, forcing the person to ride properly.TOI has learned that the plan to use technology to correct rider behaviour was discussed at length at a meeting of transport ministry officials with vehicle manufacturers recently. Officials believe that such a mechanism could significantly reduce distracted riding, particularly the practice of holding a mobile phone in one hand while navigating traffic with the other, as well as performance of stunts. Many riders continue to flout basic safety norms despite penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. “If the vehicle itself can sense unsafe behaviour and respond, it will deter risky behaviour without requiring constant policing,” said an official.Alongside handlebar sensors, manufacturers have been urged to explore the feasibility of providing leg guards on two-wheelers. This feature can reduce the severity of lower-limb injuries, which are among the most common in motorcycle crashes. While leg guards were more common in older models, modern two-wheelers do not have them.Government data shows there has been a steep rise in the number of two-wheeler deaths – from 69,385 in 2021 to 77,539 in 2023, nearly 45% of all road deaths. Two-wheeler riders top both as victims and cause of road fatalities. According to the road transport ministry’s report, two-wheeler riders had the highest share of road deaths in 2023 while 48,181 people were killed in accidents caused by them.

Lakshmi Mittal quits UK as Labour’s wealth taxes trigger billionaire exodus

Lakshmi Mittal quits UK as Labour’s wealth taxes trigger billionaire exodus

TOI correspondent from UK: Lakshmi Mittal has voted with his feet. The 75-year-old steel magnate has walked away from Britain — and straight into Switzerland — joining a rush of the ultra-rich escaping Labour govt’s tax squeeze targeting high-net-worth residents.Mittal, one of Britain’s richest men and a long-time Labour donor, has left the UK just days before chancellor Rachel Reeves’ autumn budget. He has become a tax resident of Switzerland and plans to spend most of his time in Dubai, where he has purchased a mansion on Naïa Island, a newly built enclave for global elites. The executive chairman of ArcelorMittal — born in Rajasthan’s Sadulpur — is an Indian citizen.Reeves is expected to announce fresh levies on Nov 26, including a proposed 20% “exit tax” and a mansion tax. Her 2024 Budget had already abolished the non-domicile tax regime and shut down use of offshore trusts to avoid the UK’s 40% inheritance tax — measures that advisers say accelerated Mittal’s decision.“The uncertainty of Labour’s tax policy, inheritance tax and abolition of the non-dom regime are a big concern for people who have worked hard and built up their wealth in the UK,” said Tory peer and multimillionaire Rami Ranger. “There is no tax in Dubai. Britain is the most taxed economy in the world.”A wealth adviser familiar with Mittal’s plans told the Sunday Times that many affluent foreign residents “cannot understand why all their assets, wherever they are in the world, should be subject to inheritance tax imposed by the UK Treasury. People in this situation feel they have little choice but to leave”.Mittal and his family were ranked eighth on the 2025 UK Rich List with a fortune of £15.4 billion (over Rs 180,887 crore). He founded Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal, valued at £23.35 billion (over Rs 274, 268 crore), and controls a 38% stake. The family moved to London in 1995 and bought three adjoining mansions on Kensington Palace Gardens — “Billionaires’ Row” — including the marble-laden “Taj Mittal”, built with stone sourced from the same quarries used for the Taj Mahal.Mittal’s exit underscores deep unease among high-net-worth residents as Labour prepares further tax changes aimed at those with global assets, intensifying fears of an investor flight at the very top of the wealth pyramid.

G20 summit: PM Modi calls for global fight against drug-terror nexus | India News

G20 summit: PM Modi calls for global fight against drug-terror nexus

In his address at the G20 summit in Johannesburg on Saturday, PM Narendra Modi pitched for sustainable and inclusive growth and made four proposals, including a coordinated global effort to combat the drug-terror nexus, calling drug trafficking a threat to public health, stability and security and a source of terror financing. He pushed for reconsidering the parameters of growth, saying the existing framework has left a vast section of the population deprived of resources and led to overexploitation of nature.Modi, who was instrumental in getting the African Union as a permanent member of G20 at the New Delhi meet of the grouping two years ago, emphasised the continent has suffered the most because of skewed growth priorities. “Today, as Africa hosts G20 Summit for the first time, it is imperative for us to reconsider the parameters of development.”The PM mentioned “integral humanism”, an idea associated with BJP’s ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay, as a path forward. “We will have to look at the individual, society and nature as an integrated whole. Only then can we achieve true harmony between progress and nature,” he said.He proposed creation of a global traditional knowledge repository built on Indian knowledge systems’ initiative, saying this can preserve the collective wisdom of humanity for future generationsBatting for a global healthcare response team to bring together experts from G20 countries, he said it will ensure swift measures in case of health emergencies and natural disasters. The speech was marked by an unabashed advocacy of what Modi called India’s civilisational ethos. India’s civilisational values, he said, can offer ways to reevaluate development parameters.Focusing on Africa, PM said the continent can benefit from skills transfer. He said Africa’s development and empowerment of its young talent are in the interests of the entire world and proposed a ‘G20-Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative’. This can operate under a “train-the-trainers” model across various sectors, and all G20 partners can finance and support this effort, he added.“Our collective goal will be to prepare one million certified trainers in Africa over the next decade. These trainers will, in turn, help equip millions of young people with skills. This initiative will have a powerful multiplier effect. It will strengthen local capacity and significantly contribute to Africa’s long-term development.”

PM Modi lauds South Africa’s presidencyTurning his attention to drug trafficking, PM Modi singled out the “rapid spread of highly lethal substances like fentanyl”. “This has emerged as a serious challenge to public health, social stability and global security. It also serves as a significant channel for financing terrorism,” he said.A G20 initiative to counter this global threat can bring together various instruments relating to finance, governance and security. Only then can the drug-terror economy be effectively weakened, he said. Modi lauded South Africa’s presidency for making commendable progress on key areas such as skilled migration, tourism, food security, AI, digital economy, innovation and women’s empowerment, noting that historic initiatives undertaken at the New Delhi G20 Summit have been carried forwardPM Modi on Saturday also proposed a G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative, saying that for global growth, sustainability and clean energy are essential, and critical minerals have a huge role to play.“Under this, innovations such as re-cycling, urban mining and second-life batteries can be promoted,” said PM Modi. This comes amid concerns China is leveraging its chokehold over supply of rare and critical minerals to further its strategic goals.“If there is investment in circularity, then dependence on primary mining will be less. This will also reduce the pressure on the supply chain, and it will also be good for nature. This initiative can support joint research, technology standards and pilot recycling facilities in the Global South,” PM Modi said.Resilience cannot be built in silos, stressed the PM. “The G20 should promote comprehensive strategies that combine nutrition, public health, sustainable agriculture, and disaster preparedness, to create a robust global defence,” he said.PM Modi suggested a G20 open satellite data partnership saying India believes that the entire humanity should benefit from space technology. “This will make satellite data and analysis of space agencies of G20 countries more accessible, interoperable and usable for countries in the Global South,” he said.

MUMBAI: A 19-year-old first-year BSc student from Kalyan died by suicide Tuesday after he was harassed and assaulted in a local train by fellow commuters for speaking in Hindi and not Marathi, alleged his father.Arnav Khaire, a student of Kelkar College in Mulund, was travelling in a second-class compartment as his first-class season pass had expired. His father, Jitendra Khaire, has submitted a written complaint to Kolsewadi police in Kalyan (E), demanding action against those who allegedly harassed his son and “pushed him” to take the extreme stepBased on his complaint, police have started investigations. The incident took place Tuesday, when Arnav, as was his routine, was travelling by an Ambernath-Kalyan local to attend classes.

Marathi row left Arnav in deep distress: Father

In Jitendra Khaire’s complaint — based on his phone conversation with his son Arnav — he said, “On Tuesday, since Arnav’s first-class pass for the suburban train had expired, he purchased a general-class ticket and boarded a crowded general compartment at Kalyan railway station to go to college.”Due to the crowd, he accidentally brushed against a man and said in Hindi, ‘Please move ahead a little.’ The complainant alleged that some men nearby took objection to Arnav speaking in Hindi. “They asked why he wasn’t speaking Marathi, and whether he was ashamed of his own language.” Arnav told his father, ‘I told them I am Marathi, but they still argued and beat me.”Arnav also told his father the attackers tore his mask & that he was extremely scared and shaken by the incident. After the assault, he got off at Thane station, took another train, and reached Mulund. His father said the boy was in deep psychological distress after the incident. Robert Vadra beneficiary of London asset: ED chargesheet

NEW DELHI: ED filed a supplementary prosecution complaint (chargesheet) against Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, before a special court here on Nov 15 in its money laundering case against fugitive defence dealer Sanjay Bhandari, alleging Vadra was found assisting the fugitive arms dealer and was beneficiary of a benami property in London at 12 Bryanston Square.“The evidence gathered by ED indicates that the property acquired by Bhandari, who was said to be instrumental in organising arms deal like the purchase of Pilatus trainer aircraft during UPA, was beneficially used by Vadra for his personal use,” a source aware of the probe findings said. The latest supplementary chargesheet specifically mentions “possession of proceeds of crime” by him, tying him closely to Bhandari. The court has fixed Dec 6 as the next date of hearing to decide whether to take cognisance of the latest chargesheet.Based on the evidence it gathered during its probe, the agency had earlier confronted Vadra during his questioning on his association with the London property allegedly purchased by the arms dealer and about his connection with him. Sources however said Vadra had denied any association with Bhandari. tnn

‘If you feel BJP … ‘: Sandeep Dikshit slams Shashi Tharoor over PM Modi praise; asks why are you in Congress? | India News

'If you feel BJP ... ': Sandeep Dikshit slams Shashi Tharoor over PM Modi praise; asks why are you in Congress?

NEW DELHI: Shashi Tharoor’s recent praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ruffled some feathers in the Congress as fellow party leaders have questioned the move. Demanding an explanation for his praise, Tharoor’s colleague Sandeep Dikshit went on to ask “why are you in Congress” and even termed him a “hypocrite”.“Shashi Tharoor’s problem is that I don’t think he knows a lot about the country… If, according to you, someone is doing good for the country by going against the Congress’s policies, then you should follow those policies… Why are you in Congress? Is it only because you are an MP?” Dikshit said.

Shashi Tharoor Praises PM Modi Again, Sparks Fresh Congress Rift After Attending Goenka Lecture

“If you really feel that the BJP or PM Modi’s strategies are working better than the party you are in, then you should give an explanation. If you are not giving one, you are a hypocrite,” he added.Congress leader Supriya Shrinate had echoed similar sentiments as she said that she “didn’t find anything in the speech (of PM Modi) worth appreciating” and she didn’t “know how he (Shashi Tharoor) found one”.“I didn’t find anything in the speech (of PM Modi) worth appreciating. I think PM must answer a lot of things. He was at an event of a newspaper. He should tell us what his problem is with fair journalism. He should have told us why is he not happy with those who show and speak truth… So, I didn’t see any reason to appreciate him,” she said.“I don’t know how he (Shashi Tharoor) found one…I found it to be a petty speech. He criticised Congress there too. PM thinks of Congress day and night. This is amazing,” she added.

Here’s what Tharoor had said

Earlier this week, Tharoor shared his experience of attending a PM Modi lecture. In a post on X, he wrote a short critical analysis of what his opinion was regarding the prime minister’s speech. However, he did go on to praise the PM’s address saying that it “served as both an economic outlook and a cultural call to action, urging the nation to be restless for progress.”“The PM emphasized that India is no longer just an ’emerging market’ but an ’emerging model’ for the world, noting its economic resilience. PM Modi said he’d been accused of being in “election mode” all the time, but he was really in “emotional mode” to redress the problems of the people,” Tharoor said.“A significant part of the speech was dedicated to overturning Macaulay’s 200-year legacy of “slave mentality.” PM Modi appealed for a 10-year national mission to restore pride in India’s heritage, languages, and knowledge systems. I wish he had also acknowledged how Ramnath Goenka had used English to raise a voice for Indian nationalism!” he added.

Delhi 2020 riots 'attack on sovereignty': Cops oppose Umar Khalid's bail in SC; hearing under way

Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam

NEW DEHI: During a Supreme Court hearing on bail plea in the 2020 Delhi riots case, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, “There was an attempt to divide society on communal lines, it was not merely an agitation against CAA,”Tushar Mehta told the top courtStrenuously“First of all, that myth to be busted. This was not a spontaneous riot. It was a well designed, well crafted, well orchestrated, pre-planned riot. That will emerge from the evidence collected,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria.“Sharjeel Imam says it’s his heartfelt wish for ‘chakka jaam’ for every city where Muslims reside. Not just in Delhi,” Mehta submitted. The solicitor general said a narrative is being built on social media that something very serious is going on with young people. However, the accused themselves are responsible for the delay in trial.Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, for Delhi police, is currently arguing and the hearing is under way.Khalid, Imam, Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider and Rehman were booked under the anti-terror law and provisions of the erstwhile IPC for allegedly being the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.Meanwhile, the Delhi high court on Tuesday directed the police to update it on the status of investigations into the 2020 Delhi riots.A bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Manoj Jain issued the direction while hearing a batch of petitions related to the February 2020 violence, including pleas seeking FIRs against several political leaders for alleged hate speeches. The bench noted orally that the petitions have remained pending for six years despite the availability of an alternate legal remedy that the petitioners had not pursued.During the hearing, counsel for one of the petitioners highlighted the deaths that occurred during the riots. The bench responded that FIRs had already been registered and the police were conducting investigations, leaving “nothing” to be addressed in the existing petitions. The petitioner’s lawyer, however, alleged that the police were not conducting a fair probe and urged the court to order an independent investigation. To this, the bench said: “You challenge it before the magistrate. The magistrate will supervise. These are questions of facts. We cannot entertain questions of facts in writ petitions. You can give that evidence to the magistrate, who will look into it and pass orders. The high court cannot do this.”Reiterating that the petitioners had not availed the appropriate legal route for six years, the court remarked: “These petitions are pending for so long for no good reason. FIRs have been registered and the police are investigating.”The bench listed the matter for November 21 and asked Delhi Police counsel to submit the current status of the investigation and the number of FIRs filed.
