NEW DELHI: If R Praggnanandhaa’s opening-round victory over Dutch No. 1 Anish Giri at the Candidates was a manifesto of his aggressive DNA, Round 3 was a flashy reminder of the game’s flattering nature. On a day that began with high hopes for the Indian contingent at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Paphos, Cyprus, the script soon flipped into a disaster, only to be salvaged by a miraculous defensive stand and a mere bit of luck from Divya Deshmukh in the women’s section.

Praggnanandhaa, playing with the white pieces for the second time in three days, was expected to apply early pressure on 2025 FIDE World Cup winner Javokhir Sindarov. Instead, a surprising choice of opening and an uncharacteristic lack of bite left the Chennai-born Grandmaster suffering his first defeat of the tournament.A surprising choice in the openingThe surprise began at move one. Known for his lethal King’s Pawn (1. e4) attacks, Praggnanandhaa opted for the Queen’s Pawn (1. d4) opening, a move that also raised the eyebrows of veteran Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay.“Praggnanandhaa started brilliantly by winning the first round with the King’s Pawn opening. Today, playing White against Sindarov, he surprisingly chose the Queen’s Pawn, which does not really suit his style,” Thipsay told TimesofIndia.com in his post-game analysis.

“Praggnanandhaa is a very strong attacking player, and the King’s Pawn suits him better. He played the Queen’s Gambit, which leads to strategic play, but Sindarov played sharply and opened up the game with 6…c5. By the 12th move, Sindarov chose 12…Qf5, which is a novelty.”In the battle of 20-year-olds, the Uzbek youngster dictated terms while defending with black pieces astutely. Praggnanandhaa’s attempt to advance on the queenside met a brutal tactical response.“I think with 13.Bd3, Praggnanandhaa could have kept dangerous attacking possibilities by sacrificing a pawn (13…dxe3). The sacrifice could have proved very dangerous with 14.O-O…Nd4 ,” Thipsay explained.“Instead, he chose to go with 13.axb4, allowing his Uzbek opponent to sacrifice a knight (13…Nxb4,14.axb4…Bxb4+) to keep Praggnanandhaa’s king in the centre.”The sacrifice created a complex, unclear position where the initiative shifted to Sindarov. While a defensive specialist might have weathered the storm, Praggnanandhaa’s discomfort was evident.“Accurate defence is something Gukesh would have loved to play with White and probably would have defended,” Thipsay added. “But on move 19, Praggnanandhaa played 19.Qc3, which turned out to be a decisive mistake. It was a very one-sided game where Praggnanandhaa, despite the white pieces, was not able to give a single threat.”

Praggnanandhaa plays 19.Qc3

By move 40, the Indian resigned, leaving Sindarov to join Fabiano Caruana at the top of the leaderboard with 2.5/3 points.Caruana himself enjoyed the shortest game of the tournament so far, capitalising on a catastrophic error by China’s Wei Yi, who resigned on move 19 after getting his bishop trapped.FIDE Candidates Round 3 Results – March 31, 2026Open Section

  • Matthias Blübaum 0.5–0.5 Andrey Esipenko
  • R Praggnanandhaa 0–1 Javokhir Sindarov
  • Fabiano Caruana 1–0 Wei Yi
  • Hikaru Nakamura 0.5–0.5 Anish Giri

Women’s Section

  • Vaishali Rameshbabu 0.5–0.5 Anna Muzychuk
  • Aleksandra Goryachkina 0.5–0.5 Divya Deshmukh
  • Zhu Jiner 0–1 Bibisara Assaubayeva
  • Tan Zhongyi 0–1 Kateryna Lagno

A miracle save from Divya DeshmukhAfter eight consecutive draws across the first two rounds, the Women’s section finally saw blood. Kazakhstan’s Bibisara Assaubayeva, the three-time Women’s Blitz Champion, stunned China’s Zhu Jiner with the black pieces. Simultaneously, Russia’s Kateryna Lagno defeated China’s Tan Zhongyi to join Bibisara at the top.Amid these upsets, Divya Deshmukh found herself staring into the abyss against Aleksandra Goryachkina, one of the favourites to win the tournament. For a majority of the game, Divya was on the ropes, battling Goryachkina’s deep opening preparation and hefty positional lead.“After two very dull days in the women’s section, the third day saw a lot of upsets,” Thipsay noted. “The top seeds went down. Vaishali played a safe game and drew against Anna Muzychuk. Goryachkina was in an extreme lead in the game between Alexandra Goryachkina and Divya Deshmukh, and the draw is as good as a miracle.”That miracle arrived under time pressure.Coming from the Russian school of chess, Goryachkina, usually a clinical finisher, committed a shocking blunder on move 64 with 64.Ra6.

Goryachkina plays 64.Ra6

Although Divya briefly returned the favour with 64…Kh7, Goryachkina’s subsequent error, 65.Kf7, evaporated the Russian Grandmaster’s advantage, with the longest game of the day ending in a draw after 81 moves.“Goryachkina made a decisive error moving the rook from a7 to a6, and the game headed toward a draw,” Thipsay explained. “Divya succeeded in averting defeat. She keeps her chances alive with all three games drawn.”As the dust settles on a chaotic third round, the leaderboard has started breaking into the leaders and the followers. In the Open section, the favourites, Caruana and Sindarov, have emerged early. For India, the focus turns to Round 4, where Praggnanandhaa must recalibrate against Matthias Blübaum, while Divya and Vaishali look to turn their stalemates into a full point.Round 4 Pairings – April 1, 2026Open Section:

  • Wei Yi vs Nakamura
  • Sindarov vs Caruana
  • Blübaum vs Praggnanandhaa.

Netanyahu says building ‘new alliances with important countries’ in West Asia amid Iran war

Netanyahu says building 'new alliances with important countries' in West Asia amid Iran war
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Praising what he called “enormous accomplishments” in the war against Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that the joint Israel-US effort is weakening Tehran while removing major threats to Israel’s security. In an address in Hebrew ahead of Pesach, Netanyahu said the Iranian regime would collapse “sooner or later” and that Israel is building “new alliances with important countries in the region” to counter Tehran. He did not name the countries but said he hopes that “soon, I will be able to tell you more about these vital alliances”.“On the eve of this Festival of Freedom, Israel is stronger than ever. The entire world hears our lion’s roar in our struggle against the evil regime in Iran, a struggle in which we have achieved immense, enormous accomplishments”, Netanyahu said. The address came as Israel mourns four soldiers killed in ground operations in Lebanon. Netanyahu said the gains have come with “painful costs”.“Marking one month of our joint campaign with the US, we are systematically crushing the terrorist regime that for decades cried: ‘Death to America, Death to Israel.’….the regime of the Ayatollahs made a massive effort to annihilate us, to take over the Middle East, and to threaten the entire world”, he said.“It tried to promote these murderous ambitions through the development of nuclear programmes and ballistic missiles, the funding and arming of terror proxies around us, and by weathering the heavy sanctions imposed upon it”, Netanyahu said.He said Iran’s long-term spending on its military ambitions has yielded little.“Now, I want to tell you. Over the years, all of this has cost Iran nearly a trillion dollars. And now it can be said. That trillion has gone down the drain”, he said.Drawing on Passover imagery, Netanyahu said Israel has struck repeated blows against its adversaries.“we have dealt ten plagues upon the axis of evil” including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Assad regime in Syria, groups in Judea and Samaria, the Houthis in Yemen, and multiple targets inside Iran.Among the actions against Iran, he cited attacks on “their nuclear programme, their missiles, the regime’s infrastructure, its forces of oppression, and the ‘Plague of the Firstborn’, or in our case, the blow to the senior leadership”.“From the tyrant Khamenei, to the nuclear scientists, and onto the master-murderers of the Revolutionary Guard and the Basij, not to mention Nasrallah, Haniyeh, Deif, Sinwar, and many, many more”, Netanyahu said.He said Iran is now “weaker than ever” while Israel is “stronger than ever”, but added that the war is not yet over.Netanyahu also said global attitudes towards Iran are shifting, with some leaders privately acknowledging the threat.“I spoke with leaders in the Middle East in secret and in public meetings. I spoke with leaders in Europe. I also spoke with leaders in the US, with US presidents. They did not internalise the danger. Today, there is no one who does not understand the magnitude of the threat. There are those who tell me in private conversations. ‘Prime minister, we understand. We are afraid to say it, but we understand’. And there are those who say. ‘We understand’, and, thank God, they are also acting”, he said.Reaffirming ties with Washington, Netanyahu said the joint effort has delivered “crushing blows” to Iran, leaving the regime “shaken” and suggesting it is “destined to fall”.He said Israeli operations “Rising Lion” last year and the ongoing “Roaring Lion” have significantly degraded Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities. The speech has been interpreted by some analysts as laying the groundwork for a possible US decision to end the war without a formal agreement.US President Donald Trump has recently suggested the conflict may soon conclude, indicating that Washington could stop the war after achieving its objectives.Meanwhile, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticised Netanyahu’s speech as “arrogant”, accusing him of having achieved only one thing, “dismantling us from within”.Lapid linked his criticism to the government’s recent budget and the passage of a controversial death penalty bill.

Security withdrawal from national conference office rocks J&K Assembly | India News

Security withdrawal from national conference office rocks J&K Assembly

SRINAGAR: The withdrawal of security of several legislators and politicians rocked the J&K Assembly on Tuesday after the governing National Conference (NC) raised the issue and flayed the LG administration for the removal of security at its headquarters in Srinagar, Nawai Subha, even after a recent attack on party president Farooq Abdullah, saying the move risked the lives of its leader and MLAs.Police and security in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir fall under lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha.Echoing concerns raised by NC members, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said the national flag would not be safe in Kashmir if those holding it were unsafe. “Security issues shouldn’t be taken casually in J&K,” Rather said, adding that the administration should either declare J&K a risk-free place for politicians and political parties, or ensure proper security.“Recently, Dr Farooq Abdullah had a narrow escape, and after that, you withdrew security from the NC office, where he goes regularly, which is unfortunate,” the Speaker said. “It is a question of those who raise the Tricolour; they should remain safe.”Congress, too, claimed that the security of its J&K unit chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, had been withdrawn and that police had informed him that they did not have petrol for the escort vehicles and security guards.Earlier, the issue was flagged by NC legislators, with Hasnain Masoodi saying that instead of increasing security at the NC office after the attack on Abdullah, it had been withdrawn, and Nazir Gurezi asserting that the LG administration would be responsible if there was any untoward development. Javed Baig alleged that NC was being particularly targeted, and questioned why security at BJP and RSS offices had not been withdrawn.Salman Sagar, NC MLA from Hazratbal, said security of three Srinagar MLAs had been withdrawn despite being “on the hitlist” of terrorists. “The SHO in my area is telling me not to visit my constituency after 4 pm, and this is happening in Srinagar,” he said.Nizamuddin Bhat, Congress legislator from Bandipora, said security was a common concern for all parties in J&K and should not be treated as a largesse by the administration. He said Karra had told the SSP concerned that he was willing to provide petrol himself, but the security was still removed. Bhat said his own security, too, had been withdrawn despite being from the volatile Bandipora district.Even BJP’s S S Slathia demanded that govt should restore the security of everyone, but added that NC shouldn’t blame BJP, RSS or the LG.

Addressing her frequent run-ins with photographers, Vaswani suggested that it may be a two-way dynamic.“I think what has happened is that she is continuously aggravated by the paparazzi. Patriots QB Drake Maye shaves head, stuns fans with his new look for a wholesome reason

If you saw the New England Patriots’ star quarterback on your feed today and didn’t recognize him, don’t worry, you aren’t alone. Drake Maye has officially entered his “Buzz Cut Era,” and while the look is a shock to the system, the reason behind it is pure gold.On Tuesday, Maye and his wife, Ann Michael, headed to Quincy, MA, for the 13th Annual “Saving by Shaving” event. Hosted by Granite Telecommunications, the challenge is simple, shave your head, and Granite (along with CEO Rob Hale) donates a staggering $5,000 per person to pediatric cancer research, a very wholesome event for an even wholesome cause.

Patriots QB Drake Maye shaves head for cancer research, raises millions in viral moment

Drake didn’t just show up to watch, he hopped right into the barber’s chair. In a moment that immediately went viral, Ann Michael actually took the first swipe with the clippers! She joked that her only previous haircutting experience was a “COVID disaster” on her grandmother, but luckily, the professionals were there to finish the job, taking the QB down to a “1” guard (about 1/8th of an inch).By the time the clippers stopped buzzing, the event had raised over $4.15 million for Boston Children’s Hospital. While fans are already debating if the bald look gives Drake “superpowers” for the 2026 season, the move is part of a much bigger commitment to the New England community.Just last week, Drake and Ann Michael launched their own nonprofit, the MayeDay Family Foundation. They’ve already pledged to fund a full-time Child Life Therapist for the oncology floor at Boston Children’s for the next three years. If you want to see the new look in person, they’re hosting a Celebrity Softball Classic at Polar Park on May 31.Some fans say he looks ten years younger; others say he looks ready for a Super Bowl run. Drake’s take? He’s just happy to “shine a light” on the kids.“It’s bigger than football,” Maye said after the shave. “Dealing with children is one of the best things. They’re often the biggest fans of us players, and it’s a cool experience to be there for them.”Drake’s new look is the real deal. He might be missing some hair, but he’s definitely gained a lot of new fans in the process.

American journalist Shelly Kittleson kidnapped in central Baghdad, one suspect arrested

American journalist Shelly Kittleson was kidnapped in central Baghdad on Tuesday evening by unidentified assailants, Iraqi authorities confirmed, as security forces launched an urgent operation to locate her and apprehend those responsible.Iraq’s interior ministry said a foreign journalist had been abducted by “unknown individuals” in the capital, without initially disclosing her identity or nationality. A security source later confirmed the victim as Kittleson. The ministry added that efforts were under way to secure her release, with multiple units deployed to track the perpetrators.According to officials, security forces pursued a vehicle believed to be used in the kidnapping. The car overturned near Musayyib as the suspects attempted to flee, leading to the arrest of one individual. Authorities also seized one of the vehicles linked to the abduction, while continuing to hunt for others involved.“The Ministry affirms that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining individuals involved and secure the release of the kidnapped journalist,” the statement said. The US embassy in Baghdad declined to comment on the incident. While Baghdad was once notorious for kidnappings, such incidents had declined in recent years due to improved security conditions. However, the abduction echoes past cases, including the 2023 kidnapping of Israeli-Russian academic Elizabeth Tsurkov, who was held for nearly two years before being released.

Aw Crap! Trump’s image goes down the toilet

Aw Crap! Trump’s image goes down the toilet

TOI Correspondent from Washington: In a city where monuments are usually carved in stone or cast in bronze, a new installation has boldly gone where no presidential tribute has gone before: into the toilet. Yes, a 10-foot golden toilet commode —titled with regal restraint “A Throne Fit for a King”—has appeared on the National Mall, courtesy of the guerrilla art collective known only as Secret Handshake. It is, according to its snarky creators, a tribute to Trump’s priorities. The sculpture satirizes the realtor-turned-President’s much-discussed White House renovations—particularly his decision to renovate the Lincoln bathroom and build a ballroom while the nation is wrestling with inflation and war.A plaque at the site helpfully explains the artistic vision, praising Trump as a “visionary who looked down, saw a problem, and painted it gold.” If the golden throne feels like a punchline, it’s only the latest in what has become a full-blown comedic universe of Trump satire. Earlier this month, Secret Handshake unveiled a towering sculpture depicting Trump and the late Jeffrey Epstein reenacting the iconic ship bow scene from the movie Titanic.Dubbed “King of the World,” the piece cast Trump in the Leonardo DiCaprio role—arms outstretched, wind in his trademark hair—while Epstein played his Kate Winslet counterpart. Before that came “Best Friends Forever,” a statue of Trump and Epstein skipping hand-in-hand like overgrown toddlers at a playdate.Taken together, the installations reveal something larger than any single sculpture: the meme-fication of a President who is the butt of jokes which are now turning into a joke of butts. He is, depending on whom you ask, either a misunderstood genius of branding or a walking meme template with a spray tan. His critics see him as the ultimate satirical muse—a man whose real-life pronouncements often sound like parody, requiring artists only to nudge reality a few inches further into absurdity.Indeed, the internet has embraced this ethos with gusto. Trump appears daily as everything from a Roman emperor to a fast-food mascot to a sentient gold-plated bathroom fixture. The potty installation also includes rolls of toilet paper branded with Secret Handshake’s name—because in modern political discourse, even the punchlines come with merch.Reactions to the artworks have been predictably polarized. Both Trump critics and his supporters snap selfies on it for different reasons. Critics applaud the installations as sharp political commentary and a triumph of free expression. Supporters meanwhile assert that he triggers the libs so hard they spend millions on golden toilets just to own him. Devoted to his bottom.line, some are even selling bootleg T-shirts featuring the toilet with the slogan “Even His Crap Is Classy.”

Missiles overhead, mines below: How an Indian LPG tanker survived the Hormuz blockade | India News

Missiles overhead, mines below: How an Indian LPG tanker survived the Hormuz blockade

The Indian-flagged LPG tanker Pine Gas had to wait nearly three weeks before it could safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran began allowing ships through the narrow waterway only selectively. The vessel had loaded cargo at the United Arab Emirates’ Ruwais port on February 28, a day before attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States. It was expected to reach India within a week, but the journey took much longer.Chief Officer Sohan Lal said the ship’s 27 Indian crew had seen missiles and drones flying overhead every day while waiting. In a video reviewed, at least five projectiles could be seen streaking through the night sky above the vessel.Indian officials had asked the crew to be on standby to set sail around March 11. However, with the conflict escalating, the ship was only cleared to move on March 23, but not through the normal Hormuz shipping lanes.Instead, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) instructed the tanker to navigate a narrow channel north of Larak Island off Iran’s coast.“They needed a yes or a no from all crew,” Lal said. “Everyone onboard agreed.” He added that the Larak route, not generally used by shipping, was recommended by the IRGC as the regular passage through Hormuz was mined.Lal said the Indian Navy guided the ship during the transit, and four Indian warships then escorted it for nearly 20 hours from the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Sea. He added that they did not pay a fee for the passage and that the IRGC did not board the vessel at any time. The Indian Navy confirmed it was escorting Indian-flagged ships after they crossed the strait. The foreign ministry said this month that the Indian Navy has been present in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea for years to secure sea lanes for Indian and other ships.India relies heavily on seaborne imports of liquefied petroleum gas, with hundreds of millions of households using it for cooking. The Pine Gas, carrying 45,000 metric tons of LPG, was originally scheduled to unload at the west coast port of Mangalore, but Indian authorities directed it to discharge equal volumes at the eastern ports of Visakhapatnam and Haldia.Iran has said it has permitted “friendly nations” including China, Russia, India, Iraq and Pakistan passage through the Strait of Hormuz. While six Indian ships have exited the strait, 18 Indian-flagged vessels carrying around 485 Indian seafarers remain in the Persian Gulf.

‘Demography plot’: TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee accuses BJP of ‘importing’ voters into Bengal | India News

‘Demography plot’: TMC's Abhishek Banerjee accuses BJP of 'importing' voters into Bengal

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing it of attempting to manipulate West Bengal’s electoral roll ahead of the 2026 assembly polls.Addressing a rally in Balurghat in support of TMC candidate Arpita Ghosh, Banerjee alleged a “conspiracy to change Bengal’s demography”, claiming that voters from BJP-ruled states were being brought into the state. “Efforts are being made to ensure that the people of Bengal cannot exercise their democratic rights. Voters are being brought into different parts of Bengal from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh,” he said, adding that he had lodged a complaint with the Election Commission. The TMC national general secretary also turned his fire on the BJP’s governance record in Balurghat, represented by a BJP MP and MLA for over five years. Without naming Union minister Sukanta Majumdar, he challenged the party to present a “report card”. “No one has experienced the so-called double-engine government more than the people of Balurghat… yet they have not been able to bring even 10 paise of additional funds or development,” he said.Banerjee contrasted this with the state government’s welfare schemes, pointing to initiatives such as Lakshmir Bhandar, Pathashree and Yuva Sathi. He claimed that benefits under these schemes had reached people directly, adding that funds under Yuva Sathi were transferred within 15 days of announcement. Taking aim at BJP promises to expand financial assistance schemes, he said, “I challenge them to first implement such a scheme in any BJP-ruled state… if they can do that, I will stop campaigning for the TMC.The attack was echoed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who alleged that the BJP was attempting to include “illegal voters” from states such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana in Bengal’s electoral rolls. She claimed that thousands of applications had been submitted in a single day and accused the party of using similar tactics elsewhere.Mamata Banerjee also accused the BJP of colluding with the Election Commission and deleting names of genuine voters, particularly women and minorities, during the revision process. She described the exercise as “illegal, unconstitutional and fundamentally undemocratic”, warning that people would resist any attempt to “squeeze in illegal voters”.
