WATCH: Nathan Lyon rattles Ben Stokes’ off stump with a beauty on Day 4 of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide

The third Ashes Test between Australia and England ignited Adelaide Oval from December 17 to 21, 2025, with hosts Australia enforcing a daunting 435-run chase after posting 371 and 349 in their innings. England responded with 286 in their first dig, trailing by 85, before slumping to 194/6 on Day 4, needing 241 more on a wearing pitch. Travis Head‘s masterful 170 in the second innings propelled Australia, leaving England captain Ben Stokes‘ side on the brink in this pivotal series clash.

Nathan Lyon’s peach shatters Ben Stokes on Day 4

Nathan Lyon delivered a match-defining moment on Day 4, dismissing Stokes with a ripper at 51.6 overs to leave England reeling at 189 for 5. Round the wicket, Lyon drifted the off-break into middle stump before it straightened viciously, spinning past Stokes’ groping bat to clip the top of off. Stokes departed for a gritty 5 off 18 balls (1×4, SR 27.77), his frustration evident as Australia sensed victory. The veteran spinner’s figures read 13-1-57-2, his third strike underscoring Adelaide’s spin-friendly conditions. Earlier, Lyon removed Zak Crawley (85, stumped) and Harry Brook (30, bowled), exploiting the turn to dismantle England’s middle order. This “special delivery” echoed Lyon’s Adelaide mastery, where he has historically tormented England.

Australia edges toward Ashes series triumph against England

Australia moved to the brink of a decisive victory in the Ashes 2025–26 as England slipped deeper into trouble under the lights, reaching 194/6 after 53.5 overs in their chase. Still needing 241 runs with only a minimum of 14.1 overs left, England found themselves suffocating under relentless pressure, reflected in a modest scoring rate of 3.60. Pat Cummins led from the front with a superb spell of 3 for 24 from 10 overs, ripping through the top order by removing Ben Duckett for 4, Ollie Pope for 17 and the prized wicket of Joe Root for 39. The final phase before stumps summed up England’s plight, as they managed just 43 runs while losing three wickets in the last 10 overs.

The match has largely followed Australia’s script from the outset. On Day 1, the hosts piled up 326 for 8, built around a fluent century from Alex Carey (106) and a composed 82 from Usman Khawaja. England responded on Day 2 with 213 for 8 at stumps, with Ben Stokes’ gritty 83 and Jofra Archer’s 51 providing resistance. Australia then tightened their grip on Day 3, cruising to 271 for 4 on the back of a dominant Head innings. Head later turned it into a commanding 170, striking 16 fours and two sixes, while Carey added 72 as Australia were bowled out for 349. Although Archer’s five-wicket haul in the first innings briefly lifted England’s hopes, Cummins’ incisive captaincy and bowling have left Australia just four wickets away from sealing the urn.

Fans left shocked as BCCI drops Shubman Gill from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad

In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through Indian cricket fans BCCI announced the 15-member squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 along with the five-match T20I series against New Zealand creating massive buzz on social media. Suryakumar Yadav retains captaincy with Axar Patel elevated as vice-captain while former vice-captain Shubman Gill and Jitesh Sharma suffer shocking exclusions. The announcement came from Mumbai’s BCCI headquarters on December 20 2025 attended by secretary Devajit Saikia captain Suryakumar and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad composition and key inclusions

India‘s T20 World Cup 2026 squad blends explosive batting all-round depth and potent bowling, The batting lineup features power-hitters like Abhishek Sharma (recent aggressor) Suryakumar, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh and recalled Ishan Kishan who returns after strong domestic showings. All-rounders Hardik Pandya (blitzed 63 off 25 in recent T20I) Axar, Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar provide balance. Bowling boasts pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah alongside Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana plus spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav offering variety on expected spin-friendly pitches.

This same squad prepares via New Zealand T20Is from January 21-31 2026 ahead of the World Cup starting February 7 where India defends their 2024 title won against South Africa. Three ODIs precede from January 11-18 with that squad pending.

Shubman Gill’s exclusion sparks outrage among fans

Gill’s omission despite prior vice-captaincy in South Africa T20Is has fans furious with #JusticeForGill trending nationwide. Chief selector Agarkar cited Gill’s underwhelming T20I form—291 runs in 15 innings at 24.25 average strike rate 137.26 no fifties—a foot injury sidelined him recently.

Social media erupted as fans gave a mixed reaction on BCCI’s call. Jitesh also missed out as Kishan and Rinku prioritized for finishing prowess. Agarkar emphasized squad balance favouring current impact over potential. Gill’s IPL success contrasts T20I struggles prompting debates on his aggressive evolution needed for T20s.

As India eye back-to-back titles under Suryakumar this bold call tests selection gambles but underscores ruthless T20 meritocracy. Fans await Gill’s response in IPL 2026.

Why Shubman Gill was left out of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad? Ajit Agarkar explains

In a surprising turn of events, Shubman Gill was left out of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, despite being a vice-captain earlier in the year. His exclusion comes as part of a strategic decision based on recent form, injury setbacks, and team combinations.

Ajit Agarkar explains the reasons behind Shubman Gill’s exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup squad

BCCI Chairman of Selectors, Ajit Agarkar, shared insights into the rationale behind the choice, shedding light on the factors influencing the selection.

“Obviously, Shubman was the vice-captain, and with him not in the team, we had to appoint someone else. Axar Patel had already stepped in as vice-captain when Shubman was unavailable, and we’ve decided to continue with that role,” Agarkar explained.

Despite being a key player in India’s setup, Gill’s struggles with form were the primary reason behind his exclusion. His recent scores 4, 0, and 28 in the South Africa series didn’t meet the team’s expectations. Gill, who had been recovering from a neck sprain, missed several matches and couldn’t regain his momentum in T20Is. “We know he is a quality player, but with his ongoing injury issues and the lack of substantial runs, it became difficult to select him,” Agarkar remarked. This series of challenges, coupled with inconsistent performances, led to his exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad.

The BCCI’s focus was not just on individual performances but also on crafting an ideal team combination. Agarkar further explained, “We were looking for certain combinations, and having two wicketkeepers at the top was one of the key strategies. Players like Rinku Singh were included to strengthen the middle order, offering more depth.” This strategic shift resulted in the decision to omit Gill despite his previous contributions to the team.

Suryakumar Yadav on role fixation and team management’s approach

India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav supported Agarkar’s stance, emphasizing the importance of role clarity. “We have fixed roles for players now, with Tilak Varma at number 3 and myself at number 4. The left-right combination is somewhat overrated,” Yadav said. The team’s emphasis is on stability, with players like Varma and Yadav securing key spots in the batting lineup.

Gill’s omission is not a reflection of his lack of ability but more about the balance of the squad. “Sometimes, the team management needs to make tough choices, and in this case, Shubman had to miss out. It’s not because he’s not a good player, but because of the combinations we want to play,” Agarkar explained. The inclusion of players like Rinku Singh, who add depth to the lower middle order, meant there was no space for Gill in the 15-player squad.

In line with the team management’s thinking, Agarkar further highlighted the need for balance in the squad. “When selecting a team, it’s not just about one or two players but how the team as a whole fits together. Having another keeper at the top provides us with options and flexibility elsewhere in the lineup,” Agarkar concluded. This strategic move was essential for India to play with a balanced combination, and unfortunately, it meant that Gill had to be left out.

Fans erupt as Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon put Australia on the verge of Ashes Test series win against England on Day 4 in Adelaide

Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon push Australia to the cusp of Ashes 2025-26 triumph against England in Adelaide. The third Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series at Adelaide Oval, starting December 17, 2025, saw Australia dominate England on Day 4, setting a daunting 435-run target after posting 371 and 349. With England reeling at 207/6, needing 228 more at stumps, Cummins and Lyon’s incisive bowling sparked massive crowd celebrations, inching Australia toward a series-clinching win.

Australia’s resilient batting stand put up a massive target against England on Day 4

Australia’s second innings began steadily on Day 4 but witnessed a dramatic collapse after a strong platform, yet they amassed 349 to forge ahead. Travis Head‘s masterful 170 off 219 balls, including 16 fours and two sixes, anchored the innings, reaching 150 in 205 balls during a 150-run fifth-wicket stand with Alex Carey (72 off 128). Key partnerships propelled milestones: 300 runs in 71.5 overs and 250 in 61.6 overs, but post-Head’s dismissal at 311/5 (73.6 overs), the lower order crumbled, losing 38 runs for six wickets in 10.8 overs.

England’s bowlers struck back decisively. Josh Tongue claimed 4-70, including Head, Cameron Green (7), and Josh Inglis (10), while Brydon Carse took 3-80, dismissing Jake Weatherald (1), Marnus Labuschagne (13), and Lyon (0). Usman Khawaja (40) and Carey added crucial runs before Ben Stokes (1-26) and Jofra Archer (1-20) mopped up, with Australia all out in 84.4 overs at 4.12 runs per over. Despite the late wobble from 311/5 to 349 all out, the total left England facing history’s fourth-highest successful chase target in Tests.

Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon strike England down as Australia eye Ashes 2025-26 glory

Cummins and Lyon turned Day 4 at the Adelaide Oval into a theatre of dominance, sending the crowd into raptures as Australia tightened its grip on a likely Ashes 2025–26 triumph. With England attempting an increasingly uphill chase, Cummins led from the front with a fiery spell that shattered the visitors’ early resolve. Striking in his very first over, the Australian captain removed Ben Duckett and soon added the prized wickets of Ollie Pope and Joe Root, finishing with superb figures that reflected both control and menace. At the other end, Lyon played the perfect foil, using guile and patience to break England’s middle order, dismissing Harry Brook, Ben Stokes and, most crucially, the well-set Zak Crawley, whose gritty resistance briefly kept England afloat.

England’s innings never truly found momentum, crawling along at a slow run rate as Australian bowlers applied relentless pressure. Crawley’s half-century offered a flicker of hope, but once he fell, the collapse after tea laid bare England’s fragile middle order. Cummins’ supporting cast, including Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc, maintained tight lines, ensuring there was no escape. By stumps, England were staring at a daunting target with their tail exposed, while the Adelaide crowd sensed the inevitable. With Australia needing just a few more breakthroughs, a 3–0 series lead now appears firmly within reach.

Ashes 2025-26 [WATCH]: Nathan Lyon’s deadly spin sends Harry Brook packing on Day 4 of Adelaide Test

Nathan Lyon has produced a moment of absolute magic at the Adelaide Oval on Day 4 of the Adelaide Test between England and Australia, delivering a ball that will be replayed in coaching manuals for years to come.

Nathan Lyon’s fiery spin forces Harry Brook’s departure on Day 4 of Adelaide Test

Having already troubled Harry Brook with his flight and dip earlier in the over, Lyon switched to around the wicket and tossed this one up with generous air, tempting the batter into a drive. Brook, perhaps anticipating a straighter delivery, planted his front foot and aimed to punch through the covers, but he failed to account for the prodigious revolutions Lyon had imparted on the Kookaburra.

The ball drifted in beautifully to hold its line in the air before biting into the crumbling Day 4 surface and ripping sharply away from the right-hander. It was a classic off-spinner’s dismissal, beating the bat not just by a fraction, but by a comfortable distance, before crashing into the top of the off-stump with a sickening sound that silenced the Barmy Army. The sheer extent of the turn left Brook looking back at the pitch in disbelief, his aggressive stay ended by a piece of bowling artistry that exposed the vulnerability of England’s “Bazball” approach against high-quality spin on a wearing track. Lyon’s roar of delight told the story; he knew he had just removed the biggest threat to Australia’s dominance with a delivery that was simply unplayable.

Ashes 3rd Test: Lyon spins web around England as visitors crumble in pursuit of record 435

The third Test at the Adelaide Oval has swung decisively in Australia’s favor on Day 4, with Lyon delivering a masterclass in spin bowling to dismantle England’s middle order. Chasing a colossal target of 435 for victory, set up earlier by Travis Head’s marathon 170 and Alex Carey’s rapid 72 which lifted Australia to 349 in their second innings, the visitors have crumbled under the mounting pressure and a deteriorating surface. While Brook offered brief resistance with a counter-attacking 45 (62), his dismissal in the 56th over (55.4) proved to be the fatal blow, as Lyon’s drift and sharp turn left the young batter bewildered and his off-stump pegged back.

This critical strike came just four overs after the GOAT had already removed England captain Ben Stokes for a mere 5 (18) in the 52nd over (51.6), producing a magic ball that squared him up completely and rattled the timber. England, now reeling at 158/5 and still trailing by 277 runs, face an insurmountable mountain to climb with their recognized batting lineup decimated against the pink ball under lights. Lyon’s current spell of 3/42 underscores his dominance, as he exploited the footmarks created by the pacers to devastating effect, leaving the tourists Bazball philosophy in tatters. With the tail exposed and Pat Cummins rotating his bowlers aggressively, Australia is now on the verge of taking an unassailable 3-0 series lead to retain the urn.

Kavem Hodge‘s resilient century, supported by a gritty partnership, helped the West Indies fight back against New Zealand‘s dominant first innings on Day 3 at the Bay Oval Test, Mount Maunganui. The West Indies trail by 194 runs at the close of play, with Hodge unbeaten on 109, as the visitors reach 381/6 in their first innings. New Zealand, who declared their innings at 575/8, set a formidable target for the West Indies, but the visitors responded strongly on Day 3, with Hodge anchoring the innings.

NZ vs WI, Day 3: West Indies’ resilient response led by Kavem Hodge

Hodge’s stoic century on Day 3 was the highlight of the West Indies’ fightback after early breakthroughs by New Zealand. Hodge, who resumed his innings at 94, continued to weather the storm, displaying remarkable patience and skill to reach his hundred off 224 balls. His knock featured 13 boundaries and was a crucial effort for West Indies, who had been under pressure for much of the day. Hodge’s resistance helped steady the innings after key wickets fell earlier in the day, with West Indies at 351/6 when drinks were taken.

The partnership between Hodge and Anderson Phillip, which has now reached 12 runs, will be crucial as the West Indies aim to extend their innings on Day 4. The pair will be tasked with helping their side pass 400 runs, with the target now set on minimizing further damage in an attempt to give their bowlers a chance. Hodge’s ability to keep the scoreboard ticking, despite the challenges posed by the New Zealand bowlers, has given the West Indies a glimmer of hope in this challenging Test.

NZ vs WI, Day 3: New Zealand’s bowlers struggle to break through

New Zealand’s bowlers found it challenging to break the West Indies’ resistance on Day 3, despite having early breakthroughs. The West Indies reached 150 runs on the day in 39.1 overs, with Hodge and Alick Athanaze combining for a steady 50-run partnership. The momentum shifted slightly when New Zealand took the second new ball at 80.1 overs, but the West Indies duo fought back to add a crucial 50 runs in 84 balls.

Despite having a substantial first innings lead, New Zealand’s bowlers, including Ajaz Patel and Daryl Mitchell, struggled to extract consistent breakthroughs. The New Zealand spinners tried to control the run flow, but Hodge and Phillip’s determined stand kept them at bay. With six wickets in hand, the West Indies will be looking to Hodge to continue his fine innings and try to reduce the deficit in what looks to be an evenly poised match heading into Day 4.

After initial uncertainty, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed on Friday that the veteran opener will participate in the opening stages of the prestigious 50-over tournament.

The move comes as part of the BCCI’s recent mandate requiring fit national players to participate in at least two domestic games to remain in rhythm for upcoming international assignments, specifically the ODI series against New Zealand scheduled for January 2026.

  • Suryakumar Yadav & Shivam Dube: Currently on national duty.
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal: The explosive opener is currently recovering from a bout of acute gastroenteritis and was recently hospitalized in Pune.
  • Ajinkya Rahane: The veteran batter has requested rest for the initial phase to recover from a minor hamstring issue.

Aakash Chopra reveals India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026; no Shubman Gill as vice-captain

On December 19, 2025, former Indian opener and renowned cricket analyst Aakash Chopra took to his YouTube channel to unveil his predicted 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. With the tournament scheduled to begin on February 7, 2026, in India and Sri Lanka, Chopra’s selection highlights a strategic pivot toward multi-skilled utility players and mystery spin.

Aakash Chopra picks India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026

His squad reflects the current form seen in the ongoing South Africa series and the historic high-scoring feats of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) final. While the core of the 2024 championship team remains, Chopra’s latest analysis suggests significant changes in the leadership hierarchy and the finisher roles that have defined India’s T20 identity.

The vice-captaincy conundrum: Hardik Pandya vs Shubman Gill

A major talking point in Chopra’s analysis was the uncertainty surrounding the vice-captaincy, a role currently held by Shubman Gill. While Chopra included Gill in his squad as a specialist opener, he expressed doubt about his longevity in a leadership capacity due to recent fitness issues and a dip in T20I scoring rates. Chopra suggested that the selectors might return to Hardik Pandya to serve as deputy to Suryakumar Yadav.

“The fact is that Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson will be the three openers part of this team. I have picked Sanju Samson as the second wicketkeeper and an opening option. Abhishek Sharma, let’s not talk about it, because I feel he could be the highest run-scorer of the World Cup.” Chopra said.

“If you are wondering why Shubman Gill has been picked, if you have appointed someone the vice-captain, you won’t pivot that soon. I am not going to put my neck on the line and say that Shubman only will be the vice-captain. The team might leave the vice-captain slot open, or they might appoint Hardik Pandya just to keep their options open.” the former Indian cricketer added.

Tactical toss-ups: Why Washington Sundar pips Rinku Singh

In a move that sparked significant debate among fans, Chopra chose Washington Sundar over the specialized finisher Rinku Singh for the final spot in his 15. He argued that the team management’s current philosophy favors utility over specialization, particularly on subcontinental pitches where an extra bowling option is vital.

Chopra explained. He noted that while Rinku’s striking ability is elite, Sundar’s ability to bowl in the powerplay and provide left-handed batting depth at number eight offers more tactical maneuvers. This utility-first approach is mirrored in his middle-order picks, where Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube were identified as “100 percent locks” due to their secondary bowling skills and ability to dismantle spin in the middle overs.

“After that, one more wicketkeeper will be required. You need a minimum of two wicketkeepers in the squad. So you have to keep Jitesh Sharma in the team. After that, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube. These all-rounders should be locked. These three are 100 percent part of the team. Even if Sanju opens, you will have to play Jitesh because this team has started giving preference to Washington Sundar. I think it’s a toss-up whether to take Rinku or Washi. The team feels they won’t be able to use Rinku at all, so they should keep Washi.” the cricketer-turned-commentor stated.

The bowling blueprint: Varun Chakaravarthy and Harshit Rana as game-changers

Chopra’s bowling unit for the 2026 World Cup is built on a “non-negotiable” trio of pace and mystery, with Varun Chakaravarthy tipped to be the tournament’s most lethal weapon.

“After that, Jasprit Bumrah. Let’s not discuss. Why waste time? Arshdeep Singh, let’s not discuss. Why waste time? Then Varun Chakaravarthy. There is no discussion. Why should we waste your and my time? I feel Varun Chakaravarthy could be the highest wicket-taker of this tournament. After that, you have to keep Kuldeep Yadav in the team. You are giving yourselves options. Then only one slot is left. You can pick any fast bowler there. So I am keeping Harshit Rana there. He also provides a batting option at No. 8.” Chopra concluded.

Aakash Chopra’s 15-men Indian squad for T20 World Cup 2026:

  • Openers: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson (WK)
  • Middle Order: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Tilak Varma, Jitesh Sharma (WK)
  • All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar
  • Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana

ST vs SS, BBL|15, Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers?

The first Sydney Smash of BBL|15 takes center stage as Sydney Thunder hosts Sydney Sixers at the Sydney Showground Stadium. Both teams are searching for their first win of the season, adding high stakes to an already fierce crosstown rivalry.

The Thunder started their campaign with a heartbreaking last-ball loss to the Hobart Hurricanes. Despite posting a strong 180, their bowlers couldn’t defend it in the final over. Captain David Warner returns to the squad for this massive derby, providing a huge psychological and tactical boost at the top of the order. Cameron Bancroft looked in sublime touch with a half-century in the opener, while Shadab Khan proved his value as a genuine all-rounder, taking 2 wickets and contributing with the bat.

The three-time champions have had a rare horror start, losing their first two matches against the Scorchers and Strikers. Marquee signing Babar Azam has struggled so far, recording two single-digit scores. He will be desperate to silence critics in the derby. Josh Philippe and Jack Edwards have been the lone warriors with the bat, while the veteran Kane Richardson is expected to make his Sixers debut to bolster a bowling unit that has lacked “bite” in the death overs.

Sydney Showground Stadium Pitch Report

The Sydney Showground Stadium is expected to offer a balanced, slightly slower surface that typically rewards tactical bowling over brute force. Historically, the pitch features a spongy bounce that can make it difficult for batters to time the ball freely, resulting in an average first-innings score of around 145–155.
