ICC announces T20 World Cup 2026 Team of the Tournament, Aiden Markram to lead

The dust has finally settled in Ahmedabad, and the cricketing world has a familiar king. India etched their names into the history books on Sunday, becoming the first nation to secure back-to-back titles after a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand. While the Men in Blue hoisted the trophy, the ICC has now recognized the individual brilliance that defined the month-long spectacle by announcing the official T20 World Cup 2026 Team of the Tournament.

In a surprising yet respected move, the selection panel, featuring legends like Ian Bishop and Eoin Morgan named South Africa’s Aiden Markram as the captain of the star-studded XI. Markram’s tactical brilliance led the Proteas to seven consecutive wins, proving his mettle as a world-class leader even as his side fell in the semi-finals.

ICC names T20 World Cup 2026 team of the tournament

The top order of this dream team is dominated by record-breakers. Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan earns his spot after a historic campaign, amassing 383 runs—the highest ever in a single T20 World Cup edition. Farhan’s ability to notch two centuries in one tournament set a new benchmark for openers globally.

Joining him is India’s Sanju Samson, the Player of the Tournament, occupies the wicketkeeping slot. Samson’s redemption was the heartbeat of India’s knockout surge; he averaged a staggering 80.25 and struck at nearly 200. His trio of successive 80-plus scores in the virtual knockout, semi-final, and final proved he is currently the world’s most dangerous middle-order anchor. He is joined by teammate Ishan Kishan, whose 317 runs and aggressive strike rate of 193.29 provided India with the fearless starts that defined their campaign.

The all-rounder slots are occupied by the dynamic Hardik Pandya and England’s Will Jacks. Pandya’s dual-threat capability was on full display as he gathered 217 runs and 9 wickets, while Jacks equaled Shane Watson’s record for the most Player of the Match awards (4) in a single tournament, proving to be England’s most reliable finisher and a handy off-spinner.

A bowling attack of precision and power

The bowling unit of the 2026 Team of the Tournament offers a terrifying blend of pace, bounce, and guile. Leading the line is Jasprit Bumrah, the joint-leading wicket-taker with 14 scalps. His Player of the Match performance in the final (4/15) reminded the world why he is considered the gold standard of death bowling, maintaining a tournament economy of just 6.21.

Complementing Bumrah is the towering Jason Holder, who utilized his 6’7″ frame to extract lethal bounce, most notably in a 4/27 demolition of Nepal. South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani round out the pace attack. Muzarabani was the catalyst for Zimbabwe’s historic run to the Super Eights, highlighted by a 4/17 spell that stunned Australia.

The sole specialist spinner is England’s Adil Rashid, whose 13 wickets were pivotal on the turning tracks of the subcontinent. Interestingly, the 12th man honors went to USA’s Shadley Van Schalkwyk, who dominated the group stages with 13 wickets at an incredible average of 7.76, nearly toppling giants like India and Pakistan single-handedly.

Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Lea Tahuhu return to fold as New Zealand announces squad for South Africa Women’s T20I series

The reigning T20 World Champions are officially shifting back into high gear. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced a formidable squad for the upcoming five-match T20I home series against South Africa, headlined by the high-profile return of Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, and Lea Tahuhu.

This series marks a critical juncture for the White Ferns as they continue their journey under the permanent captaincy of Amelia Kerr. With the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup looming on the horizon in June, the return of these ‘Big Three’ veterans provides a blend of tactical depth and cultural leadership that head coach Ben Sawyer believes is indispensable for the team’s evolution.

The return of the veterans and squad logistics ahead of the grilling South African series

The availability of New Zealand’s most experienced players provides a massive boost following a mixed series against Zimbabwe. Devine, who is currently operating on a casual contract with NZC, returns to the fold after skipping the previous assignment. Joining her is the legendary Bates, who has successfully recovered from a quadricep injury that sidelined her recently.

The bowling department also sees the return of speedster Tahuhu. Following her retirement from the ODI format, Tahuhu’s absence from the Zimbabwe series was a strategic move by management to focus on physical preparation planning. However, fans will have to wait slightly longer to see her in action; she is scheduled to join the squad for the final three T20Is only.

In a similar logistical arrangement, left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Flora Devonshire returns from a broken finger but will also only be available for the latter half of the series. To cover the early stages, left-arm seamer Bree Illing and wicketkeeper-batter Polly Inglis have been named for the first two matches before making way for the returning senior stars.

New Zealand building momentum for the World Cup defence

Beyond the veterans, the return of young opener Georgia Plimmer is perhaps the most significant tactical update. Plimmer, who missed the majority of the Zimbabwe tour due to a shoulder injury, is expected to resume her crucial opening partnership with Bates. Coach Ben Sawyer emphasized that her role at the top of the order remains “a key one” as the team refines its aggressive Powerplay strategy.

The squad also features Brooke Halliday, fresh off her maiden international century, and the spin-bowling talents of Nensi Patel and Jess Kerr. This series serves as the ultimate litmus test for the ‘Kerr Era,’ as Amelia looks to integrate the legends of the game with the rising stars who proved their mettle in the recent world championship run.

The five-match series kicks off on March 15 at Bay Oval in Tauranga. In a move designed to maximize engagement for women’s cricket, the matches will be played as double-headers alongside the men’s T20I fixtures, ensuring a high-octane atmosphere for the world-champion White Ferns.

New Zealand Women’s T20I squad against South Africa:

Amelia Kerr (c), Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Flora Devonshire, Isabella Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing†, Polly Inglis†, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Georgia Plimmer, Izzy Sharp, Lea Tahuhu

Tahlia Wilson earns maiden call-up as Australia Women announce squad for West Indies white-ball tour

Australia Women have unveiled their squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of the West Indies, with wicketkeeper-batter Tahlia Wilson receiving her maiden international call-up. The 15-player squad will be led by Sophie Molineux, who is set to captain the side in both the T20I and ODI series during the Caribbean tour scheduled from March 19 to April 2.

The tour will feature three T20 Internationals followed by three One-Day Internationals, with matches to be played in St Vincent and St Kitts. Notably, the ODI leg of the tour will form part of the ICC Women’s Championship, adding extra significance to the series as teams continue their qualification race for the next Women’s World Cup.

Tahlia Wilson rewarded for consistent domestic performances

Wilson’s selection marks a major milestone in her cricketing journey. The young wicketkeeper-batter has impressed consistently in domestic competitions and now gets the opportunity to step onto the international stage with one of the strongest teams in women’s cricket.

Her inclusion adds depth to Australia’s wicketkeeping options alongside experienced campaigner Beth Mooney. Selectors believe Wilson’s recent performances and ability to contribute with both bat and gloves made her a deserving candidate for the Caribbean tour.

This call-up also highlights Australia’s continued focus on grooming new talent while maintaining their strong core of senior players.

Sophie Molineux set to lead Australia across formats

Molineux will captain the side for the full tour, marking her first series as Australia’s leader across both limited-overs formats. The left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder previously stepped in as captain during the T20I leg of Australia’s recent series against India.

Although Molineux missed the final two ODIs of that series due to a back issue, selectors confirmed that she has made encouraging progress in her recovery. While she is expected to lead the side, the management may monitor her workload carefully and allow her to choose the matches she participates in if required.

Her leadership will be supported by several experienced names including Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner and Megan Schutt, giving the squad a strong balance of youth and experience.

Annabel Sutherland rested as Grace Harris misses T20 selection

One of the most notable absentees from the squad is all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, who will miss the tour as part of Cricket Australia’s workload management plan. Sutherland has been a key figure across formats in recent seasons, but the team management has opted to provide her with a break amid a packed international schedule.

Grace Harris is another big name missing from the squad. The powerful batter was part of the T20I team that recently faced India, but she has not been included for the West Indies tour.

Meanwhile, Lucy Hamilton and Nicola Carey have retained their places after being involved in the India series, indicating the selectors’ confidence in their recent performances.

Australia women squad for West Indies: Darcie Brown, Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Lucy Hamilton, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Georgia Voll, Georgia Wareham, Tahlia Wilson.

The dust has finally settled at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where on March 8, 2026, cricket witnessed a historic climax. In a high-octane T20 World Cup Final, India faced off against a resilient New Zealand side. While the team battle was fierce, the individual brilliance of Sanju Samson stood tallest. By anchoring the top order and delivering clutch performances throughout the knockout stages, Samson was officially crowned the Player of the Tournament, joining a pantheon of legends who have defined T20 history.

Each edition of the T20 World Cup has been defined by a specific archetype: sometimes it was the power-hitter, other times the mystery spinner, and occasionally, the clutch finisher. Here is the elite list of cricketers who rose above the rest.

  • 2012: Shane Watson (Australia)

Shane Watson’s 2012 campaign remains perhaps the most statistically dominant all-round performance in history. He finished as the top run-getter with 249 runs and the second-highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets. Even though Australia didn’t win, Watson was the undisputed MVP.

Not Jasprit Bumrah or Sanju Samson! Kris Srikkanth names India’s real hero after India’s dominant win in T20 WC final

Former Indian captain Kris Srikkanth has been India’s biggest critic in the past year and has constantly been slamming the Indian coach and management. However, after a successful ICC T20 World Cup, he has flipped sides in favour of the Indian management.

India were not only victorious in their campaign, but they also dominated the format with grace. India have formed a side with several staunch hitters from no. 1 to 7. India’s best find was wicket-keeper batters Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan.

However, the former Indian selector has reserved special praise for the left-handed batter Ishan Kishan, who was a surprise addition to the Indian XI. Kishan was India’s second-highest run-getter in the competition, playing his first T20 World Cup after being out of the team for two years.

His knock was very crucial, it took the match away- Kris Srikkanth

Former Indian selector Kris Srikkanth has highlighted the importance of Ishan Kishan in the Indian team and has praised the Team management for bringing in Ishan Kishan just at the right time, which helped India fight back despite Abhishek Sharma‘s poor form in the premier tournament.

The left-handed batter amassed 317 runs at an average of 35.22 and a blistering strike rate of nearly 200 on all occasions. His knock of 54-runs in the final that came off just 25-balls helped them take the upper hand over New Zealand in the middle-overs after Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson gave the perfect start India needed.

“Agarkar and the team selection committee, well done, guys. They picked a superb team. Two years back, no one knew where Ishan Kishan was. But he performed domestically and came in and was the actual game changer.

“Apart from Abhishek and Sanju giving a rollicking start, his 54 ensured that they kept the momentum, and New Zealand were out of the game. His knock was very crucial; it took the match away,” he said on his YouTube channel.

Kris Srikkanth reserves special praise for the Indian Selector and Head coach

He then went on to hail the Indian team coach Gautam Gambhir for having provided players with the much-deserved clarity over their role. He was impressed with Dube expressing how his role was to go only for the big hits.

“Dube said his job was only six hitting, which is fantastic. He came in, did his job and went. It was fantastic how the role play was clear. That way, Gautam Gambhir did a brilliant job. Well done, Gautam, for encouraging Abhishek, Samson, and Dube to play their roles. Hats off to Gambhir,” said Kris Srikkanth.

He further highlighted how every Indian player, from openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma to leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy, irrespective of their form, knew their role too well and performed to the best of their ability.

Kris Srikkanth lauds the Indian captain

He also credited Suryakumar Yadav for his captaincy moves. After much criticism, the Indian captain finally met the demands and expectations with his captaincy in the knockouts for India. Though he was dismissed for a duck, Kris Srikkanth feels he was a tactical genius in the final.

“At the right time, his captaincy moves were fantastic. Against England as well, he was keeping cool and was not flattered. Guys like Abhishek and Varun, who were going through a tough time, the captain backed them. With the captain and coach’s backing, a player gains confidence. Abhishek proved it. Even Varun got a crucial wicket,” he said.

Kris Srikkanth lastly concluded by bowing down to the ruthless and fearless batting of the Men in Blue, who scored three 250+ totals in their last four World Cup appearances in the tournament.

India’s historic T20 World Cup 2026 triumph produced many unforgettable moments, but one video that quickly went viral featured Ishan Kishan celebrating the title win with his girlfriend Aditi Hundia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

As the celebrations continued past midnight, the stadium was still buzzing with excitement when a heartwarming scene unfolded on the field. Kishan, draped in the Indian tricolour after helping India secure the title, shared an emotional embrace with Hundia, who had come down from the stands to join the jubilant players. The candid moment, captured by cameramen and widely circulated on social media, became one of the defining moment of India’s third T20 World Cup victory.

A night of glory and celebration for Team India

The celebrations followed a memorable performance from Kishan in the final. Coming in at number three after the early dismissal of Abhishek Sharma, the left-handed batter played a crucial role in building India’s massive total.

Kishan smashed 54 runs off just 25 balls, striking four boundaries and four sixes. His aggressive knock provided the momentum India needed and helped power the team to 255 for 5, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. The innings marked his third half-century of the tournament and played a key role in India’s commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand.

Adding to the moment was the presence of Aditi Hundia in the stands throughout the match. The Jaipur-based model was spotted several times on the live broadcast cheering enthusiastically for the Indian team. Dressed casually in a red tank top and denims, she was seated among family members of other Indian players, including Abhishek Sharma’s sister Komal.

Once India sealed the win, the celebrations spilled onto the field. Hundia made her way from the stands onto the iconic Ahmedabad pitch, navigating through the sea of jubilant players and support staff. When she finally reached Kishan, the two shared a warm embrace as the wicketkeeper-batter stood proudly wrapped in the Indian flag.

Fans on social media quickly labeled the moment the “perfect ending to a perfect night.” Videos from the celebrations also showed Hundia joining other players and their companions during the post-match festivities, including dancing alongside Hardik Pandya and his partner Mahieka Sharma.

“I dedicate this win to her:” Ishan Kishan

The celebrations also carried a deeper emotional layer for Kishan. Just two days before the final, tragedy struck his family when his cousin sister Vaishnavi Singh and her husband Ritik Singh died in a car accident in Siliguri while traveling to attend a wedding.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Kishan chose to stay with the team and play the final. After the match, he revealed the emotional burden he had carried onto the field.

“To be honest, before the game, I lost my cousin sister yesterday in a car accident. I played well for her. I spoke to Hardik bhai, he said to put the team ahead. I dedicate this win to her, and today is Women’s Day, so it makes it all the more special,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion.

From Anushka Sharma to Anil Kapoor: Bollywood stars go gaga in jubilation as India lifts back-to-back T20 World Cup titles

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad became the epicenter of a global cricketing earthquake on Sunday, March 8. Under the shimmering lights of the world’s largest cricket arena, India didn’t just play a final; they delivered a masterclass. Facing a resilient New Zealand side in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final, the Men in Blue secured a clinical 96-run victory. This historic win marks India’s third T20 World Cup title and a rare, back-to-back championship reign that has cemented this squad’s status as an all-time great dynasty.

As the final wicket fell and the fireworks illuminated the Ahmedabad sky, the celebration didn’t stay confined to the pitch. From the streets of Mumbai to the hills of Himachal, the nation erupted. Leading this charge of unbridled joy were the icons of Indian cinema, as Bollywood stars went gaga on social media, turning the digital space into a virtual victory parade.

Bollywood stars celebrate wildly as India secures consecutive T20 World Cup titles

For the film industry, the victory was more than just a sporting achievement; it was a moment of national pride that demanded a standing ovation. Anushka Sharma, always the team’s most dedicated cheerleader, was among the first to react. Sharing a vibrant image of the squad soaked in confetti, she hailed the “phenomenal victory” of the “brilliant team,” acknowledging the immense pressure they carried as hosts.

Anil Kapoor, brought his signature wit to the festivities. Posting a picture of himself enjoying a fruit platter while watching the trophy presentation, he quipped, “Aaj Kiwi thodi zyada hi meethi lag rahi hai…” (Today, the Kiwi tastes a little extra sweet), a playful nod to the defeated New Zealand side. Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn took to X (formerly Twitter) to capture the collective heartbeat of the country, noting that the team made “billions of hearts beat with pride.”

The younger generation of stars was equally electric. Ananya Panday kept it classic with a jubilant “We are the champions,” while Rakul Preet Singh highlighted the emotional weight of the journey, calling it a “moment for the nation” that transcended the sport itself. Even the “Begum” of Bollywood, Kareena Kapoor Khan, shared the official victory post with a simple, definitive caption: “Champions.”

New Zealand submits to Indian dominance in the grand finale

While the celebrations were glamorous, the cricket was gritty. Entering the final as defending champions, India faced a New Zealand team known for their tactical brilliance. However, the ‘Black Caps’ found no answers to India’s clinical execution. Batting first, India set a formidable target, fuelled by aggressive opening stands and a mid-innings blitz that left the visitors chasing shadows.

The second innings was a display of bowling perfection. India’s pace battery and spin twins suffocated the New Zealand chase, leading to a staggering 96-run margin of victory. The discipline shown by the Indian bowlers turned the high-stakes final into a one-sided affair by the penultimate overs.

This victory is particularly sweet as it marks India’s first T20 World Cup win on home soil. By successfully defending their 2024 crown, Suryakumar Yadav’s men (and the rising stars under his wing) have proven that their dominance isn’t just a streak—it’s the new standard. As Sunny Deol aptly noted in his tribute to the team’s “fearless spirit,” this win wasn’t just about talent; it was about the mental fortitude to remain kings of the world for two consecutive cycles.

T20 World Cup 2026: Virat Kohli pens emotional note for ‘Chetta’ Sanju Samson

The Narendra Modi Stadium witnessed a historic night as India successfully defended their crown, defeating New Zealand in a high-octane final of the T20 World Cup 2026. While the collective effort of the Men in Blue was palpable, the night belonged to one man: Sanju Samson. In a tournament defined by his clinical precision and ‘Chetta’ energy, Samson’s redemption arc reached its pinnacle, earning him the Player of the Tournament award and an emotional tribute from the legendary Virat Kohli.

Virat Kohli applauds Sanju Samson with touching message

Samson’s journey to the 2026 podium is the stuff of cricketing folklore. Just months ago, his place in the squad was under heavy fire following a dismal run against New Zealand, where he managed a meagre 46 runs across five innings. Dropped in favour of Ishan Kishan and written off by critics, Samson scripted a comeback that silenced every detractor. After steadying himself with quick starts against Namibia and Zimbabwe, he transformed into a big-match monster when the stakes were highest.

Samson’s knockout stage performance was nothing short of breathtaking. He struck a vital 97* against the West Indies in a virtual quarterfinal, followed by back-to-back scores of 89 in the semifinal against England and the final against New Zealand. With 321 runs in five innings at a staggering average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37, Samson surpassed Kohli’s 2014 record (319 runs) for the most runs by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup edition.

His performance in Ahmedabad also saw him join an elite club alongside Kohli and Shahid Afridi as the only players to score fifties in both the semifinal and final of the same tournament.

Overwhelmed by the achievement, Kohli took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message: “What a remarkable tournament from the most well-deserved man of the tournament @sanjusamson. You performed when it mattered the most. Really happy for you chetta.”

Clinical India defends their title as New Zealand crumbles in Ahmedabad

The final was a showcase of Indian batting depth and bowling lethality. Despite New Zealand winning the toss and electing to field, India’s openers set a blistering pace. Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 52 off 21 balls provided the platform, but it was the 100-run partnership between Samson and Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) that demoralized the Kiwi attack. Shivam Dube’s late cameo (26* off 8) propelled India to a massive 255/5, the highest-ever total in a T20 World Cup final.

Faced with a mountain to climb, the Black Caps faltered under the lights. While Tim Seifert offered resistance with a quickfire 52, the Indian bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah (4/15) and Axar Patel (3/23) dismantled the New Zealand top order. Despite a gritty 43 from skipper Mitchell Santner, the Kiwis were bundled out for 159.

The victory marks India’s second consecutive T20 World Cup title, cementing their era of dominance. For Samson, it wasn’t just about the trophy; it was about surpassing the 85-run final records of legends like Kane Williamson and Marlon Samuels to claim the highest knockout score by an Indian. On this night in Ahmedabad, the ‘Chetta’ of Indian cricket finally claimed his throne.
