‘Ridiculous’: Sanjay Raut takes ‘picnic in Davos’ jibe at Fadnavis; CM’s wife Amruta Fadnavis hits back

NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Wednesday criticised Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ visit to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, calling it a “picnic” and questioning the relevance of the conference.“Chief ministers from various states in India are having a picnic in Davos,” Raut said. “The Davos conference is ridiculous from an Indian perspective.”Raut also raised questions over the chief minister signing agreements with Indian companies during the visit, stating that such deals could have been finalised in Mumbai. Raut told reporters, “The chief ministers from across the country are having a picnic in Davos. He (CM Fadnavis) will pay attention to the mayoral elections after that is over. The Davos conference is ridiculous from an Indian perspective. Chief ministers from many states meet there, they talk to each other, and Indian industries go to Davos and sign agreements, on taxpayers’ money.”Also read | BMC mayor race heats up: CM Devendra Fadnavis in Davos, talks on hold, poll process set to last till Jan-end“They go to Davos every year. They should tell the nation and their states how much is spent on their travel. This could have happened sitting in Mumbai. If the figures (of the investment and job creation) being given are true, then I welcome them,” he added.Devendra Fadnavis is currently in Davos to attend the WEF annual meeting.Responding to Raut’s remarks, CM’S wife Amruta Fadnavis dismissed the criticism as baseless. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai, she said, “I can never understand his (Raut’s) language. But I will only say this much that someone who goes for a picnic does not hold conferences and meetings daily from 6 am to 11 pm to bring investment to India and Maharashtra, and boost employment.”“So I feel that this statement of his, like all his other statements, is baseless,” she said.Amruta also underlined the importance of the Davos summit, saying it is an international platform where representatives from across the world meet to discuss their countries and explore business opportunities. “Going there, I believe, is the duty of the head of every state in India,” she added.Devendra Fadnavis has been credited with the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance’s performance in the recent municipal corporation elections. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, winning 89 seats.

Need to strengthen development trajectory in Manipur: PM

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi Wednesday emphasised the need to continue working with renewed vigour in order to strengthen development trajectory in ethnic strife-hit Manipur, conveying to the state administration the Centre’s “full and steadfast” support. On the statehood day of Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya, he wrote separate letters to their respective heads of govt, highlighting Centre’s efforts to speed up progress in the region where development had “stagnated”.In his letter to Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Modi recalled his visit to the state in Sept last year. “I reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to stand with the people of Manipur and to support every effort aimed at ensuring lasting peace and sustained progress,” he said. The visit was seen as part of Centre’s multi-pronged push to defuse ethnic tensions involving Meiteis and Kukis and restore normalcy in the state. He told Bhalla, “I salute my sisters and brothers of Manipur for their remarkable courage and unwavering faith in peace and progress. It is imperative that we continue to work with renewed vigour to strengthen Manipur’s development trajectory. I assure you of the Centre’s full and steadfast support in this endeavour.” “Since 2014, our govt has worked with the resolve of ‘Act East, Act Fast’ to empower the region, unlock opportunities for progress and fulfil the aspirations of the people,” he said.Writing to Tripura CM Manik Saha, Modi said it was an undeniable reality that the people of the Northeast, including Tripura, had for decades felt distant and isolated from national mainstream. The PM said that govt’s vision of ‘Purvodaya’ is transforming the Northeast. While Tripura once faced insurgency and unrest, the 2024 peace accord with NLFT and ATTF has ushered in a new dawn of hope, he said. The Prime Minister told Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma that development in the Northeast had stagnated before NDA govt got a historic mandate in 2014 and began working extensively to transform the region.

‘Because colour of my flag is green’: AIMIM corporator Sahar Shaikh clarifies her ‘paint Mumbra green’ remark | India News

'Because colour of my flag is green': AIMIM corporator Sahar Shaikh clarifies her 'paint Mumbra green' remark

NEW DELHI: AIMIM corporator Sahar Shaikh, who had courted controversy with her statement “Mumbra must be completely painted green”, has clarified her remarks and accused rivals of indulging in communal politics. “In the next municipal elections, all winning candidates from Mumbra would be from the AIMIM. Mumbra must be completely painted green,” the 22-year-old corporator in Thane Municipal Corporation had said in her victory speech laying out her vision for party’s future in Mumbai and Mumbra. Sahar had described her victory as a demonstration of the party’s growing influence at the grassroots.Sahar’s aggressive victory speech was aimed at NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad. She had entered the electoral fray after the NCP(SP) declined to field her as its candidate. She said the election results had shattered the ego of political opponents who, according to her, believed they could dominate the people of Mumbra. However, her remarks stoked controversy as rivals accused her of giving communal colour to AIMIM’s victory in the civic body polls. The Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM registered significant gains in the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) elections, bagging five of the 131 seats and outperforming parties like Congress, which failed to open its account, and Shiv Sena (UBT) which secured just 1 seat. Reacting to Sahar’s remarks, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC said she should clarify whether she was talking about a green and clean environment or about dividing people on the basis of religion. With her remarks leading to a controversy, Sahar Shaikh clarified today and said: “We are promoting green colour, because the colour of my flag is green. Had the colour of my flag been orange or saffron, I would have promoted it … This was party-level politics, but the opposition turned it into communal politics. This has nothing to do with community … Does everyone have a stake in a colour? People should stop with their communal politics... I am secular and what I meant was that I want to win all 25 seats of Mumbra.”(With inputs from )

SC refuses reprieve to any builder in CBI probe on nexus with banks | India News

SC refuses reprieve to any builder in CBI probe on nexus with banks

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court said on Tuesday that prima facie it is convinced that there was a calculated and deep-rooted conspiracy between realtors and financial institutions to exploit the subvention scheme, causing harassment to homebuyers who kept paying EMIs for years for flats which remain elusive. In response to several builders’ plea that homebuyers have no grievance against them, SC refused to keep any realtor accused of delaying delivery of flats after joining the subvention scheme out of the purview of CBI’s probe. Additional solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati informed that in compliance of court orders, CBI has so far registered 28 regular cases, or FIRs, against builders and has completed probe in three cases where chargesheets have been filed. The bench asked the trial court to decide on taking cognisance of the chargesheets within two weeks and then proceed expeditiously with the trial.

PM Modi’s dig at West: Democracy’s ‘flagbearers’ acting like ‘nawabs’ | India News

PM Modi’s dig at West: Democracy’s ‘flagbearers’ acting like ‘nawabs’
Modi had previously visited Motihari, Siwan, Madhubani and Patna since April.

It may seem to people that Narendra Modi is the third-term PM of the country, he became CM at only 50 years of age and has been head of a govt for 25 continuous years. But above all this in my life is the fact that I am a BJP worker. This is my biggest pride, PM Modi said. He chose the occasion to emphasise the role of BJP’s organisational strength and discipline behind its rise, contrasting this with decline of Congress from the all-time high of over 400 parliamentary seats and nearly 50% votes in 1984 — the largest mandate for any political party — to its current struggle to win even 100 seats.“Congress can never introspect over its decline because it will raise questions over the family which has captured it. They keep looking for excuses. They have lost courage to look for even correct reasons behind their fall,” he said. LoP in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly blamed an alleged collusion of EC and BJP for “vote chori” behind Congress’s string of dismal poll shows.“This family rule is an enemy of democracy,” Modi said and recalled after BJP’s big win in 2002 Gujarat polls, when he was CM, he was at a meeting to review reasons for its loss in some seats. BJP started as a party with a difference and has become the preferred party of governance, he said, in a nod to its “unprecedented” strike rate in recent assembly and civic polls.Raising the issue of infiltration and demographic imbalance, which he had flagged at a recent rally in assembly poll-bound West Bengal, Modi said even rich and strong countries are deporting infiltrators. “The world does not question them for expelling infiltrators,” he said, adding that these nations would claim to be flag-bearers of democracy and act like “nawabs (lords)” of the world. No country accepts infiltrators, he said, without naming any nation. While US has launched an expansive crackdown on infiltrators, several wealthy countries are also tightening measures against them.Asserting that India, too, cannot allow illegals on its soil, he called them a big threat to national security. “We will have to expose parties that are shielding them for vote-bank politics,” he said.In the same breath, he also slammed “urban naxals”, saying they are acquiring international dimensions and conspiring to harm India. They must be defeated by the party’s organisational and ideological strength, he said. Maoism is in its last breath in the country, he said.Modi touched on a host of his govt’s welfare measures and said he is giving an account of his work to the new chief who will write his confidential report, drawing good cheers from the audience.

NEW DELHI: Calling her visit to India a homecoming, Indian-origin Nasa astronaut Sunita Williams on Tuesday said India held personal importance for her as it was the country where her father was born.Speaking at an interactive session at the American Center in New Delhi, Williams said, “One of the first things you do when you get to space is that we all want to look for our home, like our immediate home. I grew up in Massachusetts. My father’s from India. My mother’s from Slovenia. I’m obviously looking for these places to call home.”

Williams also spoke about her extended stay aboard the International Space Station after an eight-day mission stretched to more than nine months due to technical issues with the Boeing spacecraft. Recalling life aboard the ISS, she said, “We are not the best singers, but we can make space cakes,” drawing laughter from the audience. “You would see almost 12 people on the ISS at one point in time,” she said.Reflecting on how space travel changed her outlook, Williams said, “It really makes you feel like we are just one,” adding that differences between people seem far smaller when seen from orbit.“Every person I know is there, every animal, every plant, everything we know is there. We’re all in this one little space in our solar system, and I think it changes your perception about us having any differences. It really makes you feel like we are just one and we all should probably work a little bit closer and easier together,” Williams said.

CM Naidu 'misused' Davos visit for political gains: YSRCP leader

VISAKHAPATNAM: Senior YSRCP leader Gudivada Amarnath on Tuesday alleged that Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu used a global platform for self-promotion and to level baseless charges against the opposition.Amarnath’s remarks came amid Naidu’s participation in the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, where CM addressed members of the Telugu diaspora and global investors.“Naidu misused a global platform for self-promotion and for making baseless allegations against the opposition YSRCP, while the situation in the state tells a different story,” Amarnath claimed while addressing a press conference. The former minister accused Naidu and his team of turning “the overseas tour into an exercise in political marketing”, ignoring the ground realities faced by people in Andhra. He alleged that several sections of society were in distress, claiming that farmers were not receiving the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and students were burdened by pending fee reimbursement dues.Amarnath further alleged that the NDA coalition government had failed to fulfil its election promises to youth, women, farmers and students, and accused it of repeatedly “misleading the public through propaganda.” He also accused the TDP-led NDA government of indulging in “credit chori” over the Bhogapuram airport project, claiming that statutory clearances and preliminary groundwork had been secured during the YSRCP government’s tenure between 2019 and 2024.The Bhogapuram project is a proposed aviation hub near Visakhapatnam, aimed at boosting regional connectivity, handling passenger and cargo traffic, and supporting economic growth in north Andhra.A validation flight was conducted on January 4 to assess runway readiness, navigational systems, and overall operational safety ahead of commercial operations.Amarnath said the TDP “had a history of making false claims” and asserted that people were aware of the facts and would not be misled again. There was no immediate response from the ruling TDP.
