'Team UDF is Team Keralam, people ready for change': Rahul Gandhi's message ahead of Kerala polls

NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi on Fruday pitched the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) as a unified and people-centric alliance ahead of the Kerala assembly elections, saying the coalition represents both experience and fresh leadership rooted in local realities.“Each candidate reflects the voice, the aspirations and the trust of the people of Keralam. This is a collective of experienced leaders and young change-makers – a strong team of men and women who understand the intricacies of the constituencies they represent,” Rahul said in a post on X.

“For me, Keralam is home and the people of Keralam are family. I owe a great debt to the people for everything they have taught me and for the love and warmth they have embraced me with – I will always be your partner,” it added.Projecting the election as a moment of political shift, Rahul said, “The message from Keralam is clear — the people are ready for change, they seek a government that listens, understands, and delivers with honesty.”He also expressed confidence in the UDF’s prospects, saying, “Along with the coming UDF government, I will do everything to help build a better future for this beautiful state. Keralam will win. UDF will lead.”Kerala will go to the polls on April 9 to elect a new 140-member Assembly, with results scheduled for May 4. The contest has largely crystallised into a three-way battle between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), the Congress-led UDF, and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).The LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is seeking a rare third consecutive term, banking on its governance record over the past decade. The BJP, under state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, is attempting to regain ground after losing its only seat in Nemom in 2021.While the outgoing Assembly was dominated by the Left with 99 seats against the UDF’s 41, the opposition is hopeful that shifting political currents and localised anti-incumbency could narrow the gap. Nearly 35 constituencies saw victory margins of less than 10,000 votes in the last election, making them key battlegrounds this time.

EV charging point not source of Indore fire that killed 8: Survivor

The businessman’s son said the car wasn’t connected to the charging point when the fire started

Times News NetworkIndore: A survivor of the house fire that killed eight members of an extended family here rejected on Thursday what he termed a “false narrative” about the blaze originating at an EV charging point and electronic locks preventing firefighers from getting into the three-story building.Polymer businessman Manoj Pugalia’s son Saurabh, one among four survivors of the tragedy, said the family’s EV hatchback wasn’t even connected to the charging point when the blaze started around 3.30am Wednesday. “Since the car charger wasn’t connected to the power source, it is unclear how a short circuit could occur at the charging point,” he told reporters.Saurabh also discounted the official theory that rescuers failed to enter the Brajeshwari Annexe building because the opening mechanism of electronic locks got disabled without power supply. He said the source of the fire could be something “external”, citing videos circulating on social media that show an electricity pole outside the building on fire.Pugalia, his daughter-in-law Simran and six relatives from Bihar’s Kishanganj, including a cancer patient and two children, died in the fire.DCP Amrendra Singh said forensic teams are still analysing the charred vehicle and the electrical circuitry of the house to pinpoint the cause of the blaze. “There have been instances of electric vehicles catching fire even when they were not being charged. We are exploring all angles, including what the family members have said, to establish the exact cause of the fire.”CM Mohan Yadav met the survivors and assured them of a scientific probe. “We will wait for the detailed probe report and take appropriate steps so that such tragic accidents don’t recur,” he said.

Indigenous drone production ecosystem needed for strategic autonomy: Rajnath | India News

Indigenous drone production ecosystem needed for strategic autonomy: Rajnath

NEW DELHI: Defence minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday stressed the urgent need to build a drone production ecosystem in the country to ensure strategic autonomy, enhance defence preparedness and make the nation self-reliant in the field in view of present geopolitical uncertainties.“India must work in a mission mode to emerge as a global hub of indigenous drone manufacturing in the next few years,” Rajnath said during the inaugural session of the National Defence Industries Conclave here.He said the ongoing conflicts, ranging from the Russia-Ukraine was to the tensions between Iran and Israel, are proof that drones and counter-drone technologies are destined to play a pivotal role in future warfare, and ‘atmanirbharta’ in drone manufacturing is essential not merely at the product level, but at the component level as well.“From drone moulds to its software, engines and batteries, everything must be manufactured in India. This is no easy task. In most countries where drones are manufactured, a significant number of critical components are currently imported from China,” he said.Rajnath said that while the creation of any nation’s defence industrial ecosystem relies on contributions of large industries, MSMEs, startups and innovators, it is equally driven by a clear policy push from the govt, tailored to meet the country’s specific defence requirements. While he called for active contribution from the private sector, he extended the govt’s full support to transform India into a global hub for indigenous drone manufacturing. The minister described iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) and ADITI (Acing Development of Innovative Technologies with iDEX) as game-changer initiatives, through which start-ups, innovators, and MSMEs are provided with the opportunity to develop novel solutions to meet the specific requirements of the defence forces. He said that “as of Feb 2026, 676 startups, MSMEs and individual innovators have joined the defence innovation ecosystem since inception of iDEX in 2018. In total, 548 contracts have been signed; and 566 challenges launched”. Of these, 58 prototypes have received clearance for procurement, valued around Rs 3,853 crore, he said.“Further, 45 procurement contracts have already been signed, worth nearly Rs 2,326 crore. These figures demonstrate that innovation is gradually materialising into tangible products and technologies, and the role played by our startups and MSMEs in this transformation is steadily gaining strength,” Rajnath said.
