DHARAMSHALA: It’s a rarity in T20 cricket to see bowlers swinging the ball more than batters swinging their bats. It’s almost against the core marketing ethos of the format to see the ball dominating the bat, even as bowlers are fast being reduced to mere punching bags. Under lights, in frosty conditions in the hills on Sunday evening, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana found perfect conditions to blow away South Africa’s top order after India captain Suryakumar Yadav elected to bowl, as the hosts went 2-1 up in the T20I series.

The historically high-scoring venue witnessed a lopsided contest for much of the first innings as South Africa could only muster 117, thanks largely to Aiden Markram’s 61 off 46 in a masterful display of batting.The score was too low to put the Indian batters under pressure, more so with South Africa’s new-ball bowlers spraying it around. Abhishek Sharma’s characteristic hard-hitting 18-ball 35 at the top of the chase eased things for Shubman Gill, who laboured to 28 off 28 balls after surviving multiple close calls. India eased past the target in 15.5 overs with seven wickets to spare, as Tilak Varma returned to the dressing room unbeaten on 26 off 34, alongside Shivam Dube, after an unconvincing Suryakumar was dismissed for 12 off 11 balls.India’s chase looked comfortable mainly due to Arshdeep and Rana literally bullying the South African batters with the hooping ball to reduce the visitors to 25/3 at the end of the powerplay.Coming into the game on the back of a horrific outing in the previous match in Chandigarh, Arshdeep wouldn’t have complained about seeing the ball jag around prodigiously both ways up front. Arshdeep and Rana dismissed openers Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock lbw respectively in the first two overs before Rana knocked over Dewald Brevis in the fourth. Only Markram, displaying high-class technique, stood firmly in front of the moving ball.The conditions were so heavily in favour of seam that every seamer, including Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, picked up a wicket in their first over. Except for Brevis’s wild cover drive off Rana’s inswinger, all top-order batters fell to defensive shots.

Not only did the opening burst with the new ball make up for Jasprit Bumrah’s sudden withdrawal, but it also offered respite to Indian batters who have been found wanting against the new ball too often. It also set the stage for the ever-menacing Varun Chakravarthy, who rushed through his four overs to return figures of 2/11, marginally better than wrecker-in-chief Arshdeep’s 2/13. It mattered little that India were ordinary in the field, dropping three regulation catches.The broad blade of Markram’s vertical bat against top-notch swing bowling made for absorbing viewing. Markram was the only batter to find the middle regularly. He capitalised on Rana’s inexperience in the final over of the powerplay, when the pacer inexplicably tried variations instead of sticking to seam and swing. Markram punished Rana again later, picking up 19 runs in the 18th over. Rana finished with figures of 2/34.Unlike Test cricket, the team batting first doesn’t have the luxury of time to see off the new ball and wait for conditions to ease. While Markram relied on his straight bat to hit six fours and two sixes, Donovan Ferreira got carried away with a couple of lusty blows before losing his stumps attempting a wild slog off Varun Chakravarthy. Ferreira’s 20 off 15 helped add 35 runs in 20 balls with Markram and briefly threatened to post a challenging total.

NEW DELHI: An eerie silence enveloped the third-floor 2BHK flat in a Kalkaji residential building, masking a history of deep isolation and mounting financial distress. Inside the locked house, a 52-year-old woman and her two adult sons were found dead, an end that neighbours and relatives said was preceded by months of withdrawal and an earlier attempt by the brothers to harm themselves.The deceased have been identified as homemaker Anuradha Kapoor (52) and her two sons, Ashish Kapoor (32), who studied engineering from a private college in Noida, and Chaitanya Kapoor (27), who was probably preparing for the civil services.

Kalkaji police station received a call at 2.47pm on Friday. “The incident came to notice when a bailiff, accompanied by local police staff, visited the house to execute a court order of possession. After repeated knocks went unanswered, entry was made using a duplicate key, where all three were found dead,” a senior officer said. While Anuradha and Ashish were found in one room, Chaitanya was in another room. A note found at the spot indicates that they had been suffering from depression and had killed themselves, said police. According to relatives, Anuradha’s husband, Sanjeev Kapoor, who had a construction business, died a couple of years ago because of Covid-related complications and diabetes. Sanjay, a relative, said the family had been estranged from relatives for nearly 15 years. “They maintained no communication. Even when Sanjeev passed away, we got to know about it much later. We didn’t even know how they looked like now,” he said. Police said the family had a history of self-harm and both sons had attempted suicide on Oct 30. Several neighbours told TOI that about two months ago, the brothers had tried to kill themselves, following which an ambulance and police personnel came to the house. The family would rarely step out even to buy groceries, they added.The family had also allegedly not paid rent for the past two years, following which the eviction order was issued. “The monthly rent was around Rs 34,000 and the landlord lives in Mumbai. They started living in the house about two years ago and paid rent just for the first month. The landlord then moved court,” a police source said. Investigators said the family was in debt as both sons were unemployed. “They had taken multiple small loans, ranging between Rs 10,000 and Rs 30,000, from 50-55 people. The total amounts to Rs 10-15 lakh,” the source added.Police said the last conversations that the family had with anybody was through messages on their phones. “The sons had just been communicating with people asking them to recharge their phones and asking for money or asking if there was a job for them. They had not more than 10-15 contacts saved on their phones,” the source said.

15 days after Rohtak bodybuilder’s murder, 3 arrested in Bengaluru

ROHTAK: Haryana Police have arrested three men from Bengaluru, Karnataka, in connection with the Nov 28 murder of Rohtak-based bodybuilder Rohit Dhankhar in Bhiwani, an official said on Saturday.Director general of police (DGP) O P Singh announced the arrests in a post on X, stating that “two main killers” had been caught in Bengaluru. He added that the remaining accused would be nabbed soon and would “rot in jail for years”. Later, a statement issued by Bhiwani police said three men — Varun, his brother Tarun, and Deepak, all residents of Tigadana village in Bhiwani district — had been arrested.Dhankhar was killed in an alleged reprisal attack after he reportedly objected to some men using obscene words for women at a wedding. The arrests came on a day when the state’s Sarv Khap, during a mahapanchayat at Rohtak’s Jat Bhawan, issued a Dec 16 ultimatum to the govt to act in the case. It also demanded a govt job for a family member of the deceased and financial assistance of Rs 1 crore.According to police, Dhankhar, a resident of Humayunpur village in Rohtak, had gone to Bhiwani with his friend Jatin, a resident of Charkhi Dadri, to attend a wedding at Rewari Kheda village. A dispute broke out during the wedding procession after some youths allegedly used obscene words for women, to which Rohit objected.As per the complaint lodged by Rohit’s mother Saroj at Bhiwani Sadar police station, the argument escalated into a clash. Later, when Rohit and Jatin were returning home around 11 pm, the same persons allegedly rammed their vehicle near the railway crossing on Bawmla Road. The attackers allegedly assaulted Rohit, inflicting injuries to his head and body. He was taken to PGIMER, Rohtak, for treatment, where he died the next day.Bhiwani SP said all three arrested accused would be produced in court and taken into police custody.Rohit’s uncle Satish said the DGP had informed the family about the arrests. He added that the family hoped police would complete the investigation promptly and also accept the decision taken by the Sarv Khap.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has now pledged to channel billions of dollars in 2026 towards global health and other development initiatives. emphasizing the role of artificial intelligence in transforming lives. Speaking at Abu Dhabi Finance Week in an interview with CNBC’s Tania Bryer, Gates revealed how the resources of his foundation will be used and deployed in the coming year.Gates mentioned that 2026 will be a “big year for global health”. NEW DELHI: The Congress on Sunday held a mega rally at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital, intensifying its campaign over alleged “vote chori” and the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. The protest, held under the banner “Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod”, comes days after sharp exchanges between the government and the Opposition in Parliament over electoral integrity.Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said, “The leaders of the BJP only do drama…Some BJP leaders were questioning whether, after the Parliament session, Rahul Gandhi is going abroad. During the Parliament session, PM Modi never attends the session but goes abroad…They are all sitting in power after doing vote chori, we will have to remove these traitors from power…”

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accused the government of undermining democratic institutions and questioned the conduct of elections, as she addressed the party’s ‘Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhor’ rally at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital. Addressing a large gathering of party workers and supporters, Priyanka Gandhi said elections in the country were no longer being conducted fairly and that suspicion now surrounded every stage of the process. “Elections not being conducted properly, there is suspicion at every step,” she said, alleging systematic erosion of democratic norms. Recalling the constitutional vision of India, she stressed the centrality of the right to vote. “Our voice should reach the PM’s residence. It’s very important to understand that your vote plays an important role. Nehru ji said that the people of India, every single son and daughter of India, are all a part of Mother India. This very thought shaped our constitution. This Constitution gave you the right to vote,” Priyanka Gandhi said. She also alleged that constitutional bodies were being pressured to function in line with the government’s interests. “All institutions in country being made to bend before govt,” she said, while addressing the rally against what the Congress has termed “vote theft”. Priyanka Gandhi further accused the Election Commission of ignoring alleged violations during polls and questioned the integrity of the electoral process. “EC shutting its eyes to Rs 10,000 being paid during election process; is this poll not ‘vote chori’?” she asked, referring to alleged inducements during elections. The Congress party has taken a step towards a decisive battle, and a large number of people will attend this rally,” Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel was quoted as saying by ANI.According to party sources, Congress units from multiple states mobilised supporters for the rally. A party spokesperson said 1,027 Congress leaders and activists set out from Jammu on Saturday, raising slogans of “vote chore, gaddi chhore” and “Delhi chalo” while travelling to the capital.

Congress MP K C Venugopal on Saturday targeted the Election Commission of India, alleging institutional bias and warning of consequences for democracy.“We are lacking a neutral umpire in this country for conducting elections. This is actually very dangerous to democracy. That is why we are going completely for a campaign and movement. The five-crore signature has to be submitted to the President of India. We are seeking an appointment… In Parliament, we also discussed this vote chori issue. Our LoP has given straightforward suggestions. Not only criticising, but we are also providing clear suggestions...There are a lot of complaints about the machines, the EVMs. Lakhs of people will participate in that… This is an internal party program,” Venugopal was quoted as saying by ANI.Venugopal claimed the Congress has collected over five crore signatures nationwide to flag alleged vote theft. He alleged the presence of bogus and duplicate votes, said Rahul Gandhi’s press conferences had exposed irregularities benefiting the BJP, and accused the Election Commission of ignoring Congress complaints while acting against the party.

Kharge attacks BJP, alleges stolen mandates

Addressing the rally, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the government of misleading Parliament and alleged that electoral mandates had been stolen in multiple states.“Answering in Parliament is one thing, but they (Home Minister Amit Shah) did not answer our questions; they gave answers from their own minds. They provided incorrect information in Parliament. We had asked how and in what way votes were stolen, and Rahul Gandhi spoke about this with evidence… We want to tell the people that the governments in power in Anand, Maharashtra and Haryana have come to power by stealing votes... The people sitting in power today have not been elected by the people…”

Sachin Pilot questions Election Commission’s role

Congress leader Sachin Pilot said concerns over institutional fairness were being raised across the country. He said “Across the country today, this question has arisen that fairness and transparency are disappearing from institutions. The attitude adopted by the Election Commission is very unfortunate… The Election Commission should work with fairness and honesty, rising above leaders, ideologies, or parties, which they are not doing... The Election Commission is unable to answer… Unfortunately, when we ask questions to the Election Commission, the answers are given by BJP spokespersons.” “Today we are organising a mega rally in Delhi, where workers from across the country will gather and, becoming the voice of the people, will ask the question why the Election Commission is not working impartially?,” Pilot added.

BJP hits back

Reacting to the rally, BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Congress of using abusive language and promoting disorder.“In the rally held at Ramlila Maidan by the anti-Ram Congress, abusive language and insults were once again used against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Videos have surfaced showing their workers once again chanting slogans wishing for Modi’s death. This shows that the Congress party is now becoming a platform for anarchy instead of a political party, operating under a Muslim League-Maoist agenda. You want to praise Rahul Gandhi? Go ahead. But the use of such abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has been done before, is utterly reprehensible. Although there is no comparison.”The rally marks a fresh escalation in the political battle between the Congress and the BJP, with electoral processes and the role of constitutional institutions now at the centre of the confrontation.BJP MP Sambit Patra said, “Today the Congress party is holding a rally against vote theft at Ramlila Maidan. NEW DELHI: As air quality deteriorated to ‘severe plus’ across Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Saturday directed Delhi and NCR state governments to ensure the immediate suspension of all outdoor physical sports activities, warning that their continuation poses a “serious health risk to children.“In a letter to the chief secretaries of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, the Commission said it was concerned that “some schools and institutions in Delhi-NCR were still holding outdoor sports activities” despite earlier directions issued in line with a Supreme Court order dated November 19.It said allowing outdoor physical activities during periods of adverse air quality is “contrary to the spirit and intent of the apex court’s observations and the Commission’s instructions.”The directive came as the CAQM invoked the strictest measures under its Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), Stage IV on Saturday, after pollution levels rose sharply due to unfavourable meteorological conditions. The Commission said it had earlier, in a letter dated November 19, called for the “postponement of physical sports competitions scheduled during November and December.”The CAQM asked the Delhi government and NCR states to ensure strict and immediate compliance with its directions. It also asked the government to issue necessary instructions to schools, educational institutions, sports bodies and local authorities to discontinue outdoor physical sports activities, and sensitise schools and parents about the associated health risks.Authorities were also told to closely monitor compliance on the ground and take action against violations.Under GRAP IV restrictions, all construction and demolition activities in Delhi-NCR have been banned, including linear public projects such as highways, roads, flyovers, power transmission lines, pipelines and telecom works.The entry of trucks into Delhi has been stopped, except those carrying essential commodities or providing essential services, with CNG, LNG, electric and BS-VI diesel trucks exempted.Schools in Delhi and the most affected NCR districts have been directed to run classes in a hybrid mode for students from primary classes up to Classes VI to IX and XI, with the option of online attendance where feasible.State governments have been asked to consider additional emergency measures if pollution levels worsen further, including closing colleges and educational institutions, shutting non-essential commercial activities and introducing odd-even vehicle restrictions.

Stock market outlook: The markets this week were driven by macroeconomic pressures and mixed global cues. Domestically, the rupee slid to a fresh record low of 90.56 against the US dollar, dampening risk sentiment. However, some relief came after the US Federal Reserve announced a 25-basis-point rate cut, while optimism over progress in India–US trade talks helped cap further downside.Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued to trim equity exposure, keeping pressure on benchmarks. India–US trade talks: Developments on the India–US trade front will remain in focus and could influence both equities and the rupee.Domestic data: The week ahead features key releases, including Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation and trade balance data. Holding above this zone will be crucial to sustain the recovery and could open the path toward the record high of 26,300, with further upside potential up to 26,550.However, caution remains warranted. “Failure to maintain this support could lead to a retest of the previous swing low near 25,700, followed by the major support around 25,400, which coincides with the 100 DEMA,” said Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research at Religare Broking.He advised investors to remain selective, sating that, “participants should stay selective and maintain a balanced approach amid ongoing currency volatility and mixed global cues. Besides, traders should avoid chasing stocks facing negative news flow in anticipation of a rebound and wait for clear signs of stability before taking fresh exposure.”Sector-specific cues: The Auto retail activity stayed steady during the week, with November registrations rising 2% year-on-year across passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors. Meanwhile, disclosures on public sector banks writing off Rs 6.15 lakh crore of loans over the past five-and-a-half years kept the financial space in focus.Commenting on Friday’s session, Ajit Mishra, said, “Markets extended their rebound on Friday, gaining over 0.5% on the back of favorable global cues. After a gap-up start, the Nifty saw some early volatility, but steady buying in index heavyweights helped the benchmark close near the day’s high at 26,046.95. All key sectors, barring FMCG, contributed to the up move, with metals, realty, and energy leading the gains. The broader indices moved in tandem, rising nearly 1% each and reflecting improved market breadth.”“The positive momentum was supported by global sentiment, particularly optimism stemming from the Fed’s recent rate-cut stance, which boosted risk appetite across equities. Domestic flows also remained healthy, with sustained retail and mutual fund buying, supported by stable macro indicators and improved liquidity conditions.
