‘Special measures in place to ensure safe passage of ships from friendly nations like India’: Iran envoy | India News

NEW DLEHI: Amid the ongoing conflict, Iran’s ambassador to India, Dr Mohammad Fathali, spoke to TOI on war narratives, the situation at the Strait of Hormuz, and clarified Iran’s maritime approach during wartime. He emphasised that the conflict is an “illegal war” imposed on Iran. Reflecting on his diplomatic tenure, he highlighted public solidarity and deepening bilateral relations, calling India a “true friend in hard times.” Excerpts:

‘True Friendship’: Iran Envoy Lauds India Ties, Clarifies Deleted Thank You Posts

Q: Many Indians sent aid to Iran. Tehran thanked India but then deleted some of the tweets. What happened?A: We have received a lot of contributions from all over India—from north to south and east to west. Donations are still coming in. We are truly grateful for the kindness of the Indian people. I want to sincerely thank the Indian govt and people for their valuable support and solidarity. Contrary to what was said in the media, there was no special reason for deleting the tweets. Since these contributions came from people of all religions, ethnicities, and every part of the country, we felt it was necessary to show our appreciation to all the people of India together.Q: The war has also been a battle of narratives. Has the global perception shifted in anyone’s favour?A: Beyond all the rhetoric and contradictory statements, what happened on Feb 28th was an act of aggression and an illegal war imposed on the Iranian nation. We were in the middle of negotiations with the US. This wasn’t the first time the United States walked away from the table while we were negotiating and attacked. For what reason? They claimed there was an ‘immediate threat’ from Iran, but then the Pentagon quickly denied it, saying there was no such threat. They talked about Iran’s nuclear program and nuclear weapons—something that has never existed. Now, everyone knows this is a war based on illusions. It is an illegal war imposed not only on Iran but also on the entire region, with consequences for the whole international community. Our enemies have not achieved any of their goals so far. They were looking for ‘regime change’ in Iran. However, we are a govt that emerged from a popular revolution, and our people have shown their support by taking to the streets since the very first day of the war. We are defending ourselves, and we will spare no effort in this path.Q: The administration in Iran recently praised India for its ‘balanced’ and ‘neutral’ stance. Is there anything Iran expects from New Delhi? A: We appreciate the measures taken by the Indian govt. This approach reflects India’s profound understanding of regional complexities and the significance of maintaining bilateral relations. At the same time, we expect all independent and freedom-loving nations to stand against the violation of international law and aggression. All govts must condemn attacks on civilian infrastructures—such as hospitals, schools, universities, and economic centers—and, most importantly, the killing of innocent civilians, including children.Q: There were inputs of Iran helping Indian vessels through the Strait of Hormuz during heightened tensions. Could you clarify if any specific mechanisms or coordination channels are currently in place to ensure their safe passage? A: Iran has always emphasized the importance of safety and security for shipping in international routes. However, it is important to note that the Strait of Hormuz is not part of international waters; it is within the territorial and internal waters of Iran and Oman. Therefore, protecting the interests of these two countries is the priority in managing the strait, and decisions regarding transit conditions belong to Tehran and Muscat. The strait is only closed to countries at war with Iran. It is natural that during wartime, we will not allow our enemies to pass through our internal waters. The fact that other ships are not traveling is due to the insecurity in the region and extremely high insurance costs. Nevertheless, we have implemented special measures to ensure the safe passage of ships from friendly nations, including India.Q: Is this assistance to Indian vessels being handled on a case-by-case operational basis? What’s the approach?A: Our approach is to guarantee the safe passage of vessels from friendly nations, including India. This policy is based on recognized international maritime laws and regulations, as well as the principles of navigation safety. In practice, this can be managed on a case-by-case and operational basis to ensure necessary coordination according to each vessel’s specific conditions and the real-time situation in the region. We have emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz is closed only to those countries that have been directly or indirectly involved in the aggression against our country.Q: What message would Iran like to convey to the international shipping community on transit through the Strait of Hormuz going forward?A: The Islamic Republic of Iran has always respected the principles of freedom of navigation and maritime safety; however, the effective realization of these principles in the Strait of Hormuz is not possible without due respect for the sovereignty and sovereign rights of Iran as the coastal state. We emphasize that responsibility for any disruption, insecurity, or heightened risk in this vital waterway and its surrounding areas lies directly with the regimes of the United States and Israel. By initiating an unlawful and criminal war against our country, they have placed regional stability and the safety of international shipping under an unprecedented threat, in clear contradiction to the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter. In light of the above, the lawful and legitimate measures undertaken by Iran have been adopted within the framework of established principles of international law, based on the principles of necessity and proportionality. These measures have been implemented to repel aggression and neutralize the sources of threats, and will continue, in accordance with legal standards, until these objectives are fully achieved and the sources of threat and aggression are eliminated.Any passage through the Strait of Hormuz must be conducted in compliance with the measures adopted by Iran and in coordination with the relevant Iranian authorities.Q: How has your stint as ambassador in India been? What are your biggest takeaways?A: During my time in India, I have seen positive developments in the relations between our two countries. The deep historical and cultural ties have always been a strength in our interactions, and these bonds have grown even stronger over time. The sympathy and solidarity of the Indian people with the people of Iran during these difficult times are truly appreciated and will never be forgotten. We believe that true friends are known in hard times, and our Indian friends have shown their true friendship. We are in close contact with the Indian govt, and during my stay, I have witnessed positive efforts from both sides in various fields.

FIFA, the governing body for world football, has told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) it has “no objection” to elections being postponed from September to December 2026

Panaji: FIFA, the governing body for world football, has told the All India Football Federation (AIFF) it has “no objection” to elections being postponed from September to December 2026, to ensure full compliance of the constitution with the new National Sports Governance Act 2025 and its related regulations.AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey was elected on Sept 2 in 2022 for a four-year term. Elections were to be held before the end of the term, but with the National Sports Governance Act 2025 coming into force, AIFF informed the governing bodies that it needs to stay in office till later this year “to ensure uninterrupted administration of football in India.”“On Dec 22, 2025, the ministry of youth affairs and sports issued a notice recognising that the structural changes required for all national sports federations to fully align with the NSGA are foundational in nature. In order to facilitate compliance with the provisions of the NSGA, the ministry of youth affairs and sports allowed a one-time extension to national sports federations whose elections are due in this calendar year, allowing such federations to conduct their next elections by Dec 31,” AIFF deputy secretary general M Satyanarayan wrote in a letter to FIFA and AFC last month.FIFA said it has no objection and reiterated its willingness to support AIFF throughout this process and to work closely together.“We kindly ask that you keep FIFA and the AFC informed of any further steps in the amendment process of the AIFF constitution, and in particular to share with us a document outlining the key amendments and necessary steps required with tentative timelines to ensure compliance with the NSGA,” Emile Doms, Member Associations Governance Services Manager at FIFA, wrote to the federation last week.Meanwhile AIFF has asked its member associations to complete adoption of amendments to their constitutional document on or before June 30, 2026.AIFF said governance principles and constitutional positions that are reflected in the constitutions of state associations should extend to its affiliated units such as district associations, where applicable, to ensure consistency of governance standards across all levels of football administration in India.

She lost in BMC elections, but serves city in death through organ donation | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Manisha Pawar (47) could not serve Mumbaikars as a corporator after losing as an independent candidate from Ward 197 in BMC elections earlier this year. But she has served the city in her death by donating her heart, liver and bones on Thursday. The Worli resident’s heart was transported on Friday from SL Raheja Hospital in Mahim to Fortis Hospital in Mulund through a green corridor in 23 minutes. The recipient was a 39-year-old man from Buldhana whose heart had severely reduced pumping. This was the sixth heart transplant of the city; the fifth happened just days earlier, when a similar green corridor was created for the heart to be transported from Thane to Girgaon. A green corridor is a demarcated, cleared-out route designed for the transport of donated organs to reach the destination hospital without halts. A pilot vehicle is assigned by the police to lead the ambulance from the point of origin to the destination.Traffic chowkies along the route are alerted, and personnel are posted to clear vehicles just before the ambulance arrives. The control room monitors the route through surveillance footage in real time. Manisha’s liver was transplanted into a 62-year-old man who was battling hepatic carcinoma with end-stage liver failure. Her husband, ‘Pappu’ Prakash Pawar, said Manisha expressed the desire to donate organs out of the blue a few months ago. “The hospital further counselled us,” he said.Pawar said both he and his wife wanted to serve the people through politics. “I was a gangster in the Arun Gawli gang earlier, and the first person to fight BMC elections from jail around 2008 on an MNS ticket. Manisha fought elections twice as an independent.” The couple has two children, both in their 20s.

Ashok Kharat CDR leak: ‘Eknath Shinde being targeted’ feeling getting traction among people, says Maharashtra minister Uday Samant | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Maharashtra minister Uday Samant on Sunday responded to the CDR leak issue in the Ashok Kharat case by claiming a feeling was getting traction among people that political hurdles were being created for “a person from a common household”, a reference to deputy chief minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde.Activist Anjali Damania on Friday alleged that at least 17 calls were exchanged between Shinde and Kharat during an unspecified period in the past. Damania claimed she received Kharat’s CDR (Call Detail Records) on WhatsApp from an unknown number.“It is wrong to create such political hurdles for a person from a common household. This feeling will get traction in the minds of people,” Samant said in response to a question related to the alleged calls between Shinde and Kharat.Samant, who met NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar here, said even his party could have a feeling that its leaders are being targeted.Samant asserted that such allegations will not impact Shinde’s work or leadership. “People’s affection for Shinde will only increase,” he said, while emphasising that the Shiv Sena’s stand is that the entire episode involving the CDR should be probed thoroughly instead of taking names of specific persons.Shinde is the third number leader of NDA and is seen as the voice of the common man, he added.Kharat was arrested on March 18 for allegedly raping a woman for three years, with a subsequent probe uncovering a host of crimes, including sexual assault and financial irregularities linked to land and other properties.

‘Betrayed Punjab’: AAP flays Raghav Chadha’s silence on state issues after his ‘ghatak hoon’ remark | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: The war of words between Aam Aadmi Party and party Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha intensified on Saturday, with Punjab functionaries accusing him of betraying the state that elected him, and he claiming a “coordinated campaign” to silence his voice. “Ghayal hoon, isliye ghatak hoon (I am wounded, therefore I am lethal),” he said.Punjab AAP functionaries, including finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema, state party president Aman Arora and chief spokesperson Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on Saturday accused Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha of failing to raise matters concerning Punjab in Parliament. They alleged that issues like the state’s pending funds with Centre, including Rs 8,500 crore rural development fund (RDF), Rs 60,000 crore GST losses and Rs 1,600 crore flood relief, were not taken up, despite repeated communication. Calling the “silence” a “betrayal” of Punjab’s people and mandate, AAP functionaries said his failure to raise farmers’ concerns and flood victims’ plight reflected a “complete disconnect from ground realities.Cheema said, “We sent him to Rajya Sabha with hope, but he did not speak even once before the Prime Minister on these issues. This clearly shows a compromise. AAP is a party that gives opportunities to common people, but remaining silent on such crucial issues is a betrayal of Punjab and its people.”

‘Betrayed Punjab’: AAP flays Chadha’s silence on state issues

‘Ghayal Hoon, Isliye Ghatak Hoon,’ Retorts Chadha, Dismisses Allegations

“Raghav Chadha was elected to RS by Punjab MLAs with the expectation that he would strongly represent the state’s concerns at the national level. However, he completely avoided raising even a single sensitive issue related to Punjab,” added Cheema. On flood relief, he said, “Despite PM’s announcement of Rs 1,600 crore relief for Punjab after the devastating floods, not even a fraction of that amount has reached Punjab’s treasury. All these issues were repeatedly conveyed to Raghav Chadha, yet he did not raise even one of them in Parliament.”Arora said, “Raghav Chadha must remember the role played by Arvind Kejriwal and the party in elevating him politically. Instead of focusing on Punjab’s pressing issues such as pending RDF funds and flood relief, he chose to raise unrelated matters, which has been noticed by the entire country.”Dhaliwal found Chadha’s silence on the plight of flood-affected people of Punjab ‘disappointing’. “The party and affected residents repeatedly urged him to raise the issue of compensation in Parliament, especially the Rs 1,600 crore relief announced by the PM, which has still not been delivered. People suffered massive losses to homes, crops and infrastructure, yet their voice was never raised at the national level. We expected him to strongly demand justice and relief for Punjab’s flood victims. People of Punjab will not forget this neglect,” he said.Chadha on Saturday released a video statement, rebutting allegations levelled against him by AAP leadership, calling them “baseless, selective and unsupported by facts.”The charge that he failed to join Opposition walkouts was a “complete falsehood”, he said, adding that he was being singled out in the controversy over the impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner. Seven of the 10 party MPs in Rajya Sabha — including himself — had not signed the motion, he said, asking why the same standard wasn’t applied to the six others.Dismissing claims that he was “scared”, Chadha said his refusal to engage in shouting should not be mistaken for weakness. “I came to Parliament to make an impact, not a ruckus,” he said.During his four years as MP, he highlighted a wide spectrum of issues, including GST, income-tax, Punjab’s water concerns, Delhi’s air quality and unemployment, he said, alleging a deliberate and coordinated bid to “silence his voice in Parliament”.

A missing crew member from a downed US F-15 fighter jet in Iran has been retrieved alive following a high-risk search and rescue operation after a heavy firefight.Confirming the evacuation, US President Donald Trump said, “The US military sent dozens of aircraft, armed with the most lethal weapons in the world, to retrieve him.”

‘ENEMIES WERE GETTING CLOSER’: Trump Shares Inside Details Of U.S. F-15E Pilot Rescue In Iran

“United States military pulled off one of most daring search and rescue operations in US history, for one of our incredible crew member officers,” he added.“The United States military pulled off one of the most daring search and rescue operations in US history,” Trump said.Trump providing details of the rescue operation said, “My fellow Americans, over the past several hours, the United States military pulled off one of the most daring search and rescue operations in US history, for one of our incredible crew member officers, who also happens to be a highly respected colonel, and who I am thrilled to let you know is now safe and sound! This brave warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran, being hunted down by our enemies, who were getting closer and closer by the hour, but was never truly alone because his commander in chief, secretary of war, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, and fellow warfighters were monitoring his location 24 hours a day, and diligently planning for his rescue.“At my direction, the US military sent dozens of aircraft, armed with the most lethal weapons in the world, to retrieve him. He sustained injuries, but he will be just fine. This miraculous search and rescue operation comes in addition to a successful rescue of another brave pilot, yesterday, which we did not confirm, because we did not want to jeopardise our second rescue operation. This is the first time in military memory that two US pilots have been rescued, separately, deep in enemy territory. We will never leave an American warfighter behind! The fact that we were able to pull off both of these operations, without a single American killed, or even wounded, just proves once again, that we have achieved overwhelming air dominance and superiority over the Iranian skies. This is a moment that all Americans, Republican, Democrat, and everyone else, should be proud of and united around. We truly have the best, most professional, and lethal military in the history of the world,” Trump added.

Separately, former US Special Forces personnel and journalist Jack Murphy claimed the airman had been located alive. In a post on X, Murphy wrote, “Good news for once. F-15 WSO recovered alive. Was escaping and evading. Massive firefight on tgt. Iranians were actively looking for him in the area.”However, US officials have not publicly confirmed the recovery.According to CNN, both US and Iranian forces had been conducting search operations in the rugged highlands of Iran’s Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province and the Bakhtiari region. During these operations, Iranian tribesmen reportedly opened fire on American helicopters.Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that local tribal groups targeted two US Black Hawk helicopters on Saturday in the same region.Following the confrontation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps praised the tribal fighters as “courageous, valiant and victorious guardians of the borders,” CNN reported.Footage circulated by Iranian state-affiliated outlets allegedly showed armed Bakhtiari tribesmen patrolling mountainous terrain in Khuzestan province in search of the American airman. In one clip, an individual is heard saying, “God willing, he will be found.”Iranian authorities had also announced financial rewards for information leading to the capture of the missing pilot, according to multiple media reports. The incident follows the downing of two US warplanes on Friday, including an F-15E Strike Eagle, marking a major escalation in the ongoing conflict, according to The Associated Press. One crew member was rescued, while another was initially reported missing. In an email cited by AP, the Pentagon said it had received notification of “an aircraft being shot down” in the Middle East. It also informed the US House Armed Services Committee that the status of one service member remained unknown.US President Donald Trump declined to outline a response if the pilot was harmed or captured. “Well, I can’t comment on it because we hope that’s not going to happen,” he told The Independent in a telephone interview.Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had shot down an MQ-9 Reaper drone in Isfahan, according to Fars News Agency. The search for the missing pilot had drawn intense attention as Iran also urged civilians to locate and hand over the “enemy pilot,” while US forces deployed aircraft and helicopters to scan mountainous terrain, AP reported. The developments come amid continued escalation in the West Asia conflict, now in its sixth week. President Trump warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying, “Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out — 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them,” according to AP.

Iran responded sharply to the warning. “The doors of hell will be opened to you” if Iran’s infrastructure is attacked, Gen.
