3 IIT-B students killed as car hits truck, flips on eway | Mumbai News

Navi Mumbai: Three IIT-Bombay students, who made a quick visit to Lonavla to catch the sunrise, were killed on their way back after their car rear-ended a truck while allegedly trying to overtake it, flipped multiple times and hit the safety railing a little before Mumbai-Pune expressway’s Panvel exit on Thursday. The unidentified truck driver sped away. An FIR has been lodged against him for rash and negligent driving causing death. The car was completely crushed. Three other students had accompanied the victims in two separate cars. Police prima facie ruled out drunk driving but were awaiting the autopsy reports. They said RTO officials had inspected the car and their report will help ascertain if the students had worn seatbelts or were speeding. Anand Kamble, inspector (crime), Panvel taluka police, said CCTV footage of the site had been sought from IRB Infrastructure, which operates and maintains the expressway, but it said the camera closest to the site was defunct. Two of the victims were from Maharashtra—third-year aerospace engineering student Omkumar Borse (23) from Nashik and Lay Deshbhratar (20) from Nagpur, who was in third-year physics. The third, Shreyansh Sharma (22), hailed from Jaipur and was in the fourth year of mechanical engineering. IIT-B students recalled Sharma as a popular student who had stood for the general secretary elections. His brother told TOI that he wanted to join IAS after completing his course. Borse bagged a state rank in Class 10 and the third rank in the state math scholarship exam, according to his social media profile. Police said the three victims and three other students—Hitesh Meena, Soham Chavan and Siddhant Jebal—had stayed up all night watching movies till 4am and then decided to head for Lonavla in three cars to watch the sunrise. Borse, Sharma and Deshbhratar took one car, Chavan and Jebal another, and Meena the third. Citing Meena’s police statement, senior Panvel taluka police inspector Gajanan Ghadge said as the group neared the 10.7-km mark before the Panvel exit while returning, Borse, who was behind the wheel of the ill fated car, attempted to overtake a truck in the extreme left lane but lost control and rammed into it. All three students in the car sustained severe injuries after the car flipped multiple times and hit the safety railing. They were taken to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai, where they were declared brought dead. Ghadge said CCTV footage can shed light on the exact cause of the crash. Kamble said the RTO officials’ inspection report will help determine if the airbags had deployed.

Rishabh Pant returns to IPL grind, chasing another India comeback | Cricket News

Rishabh Pant (Photo by Pankaj Nangia/Getty Images)

Rishabh Pant is in the 10th year of his international cricket career. He has consistently inspired raging debates over these nine years. Eyeballs yearn for him even when he is not part of the Indian team. Last week, when videos of Pant practising in Mumbai and Chennai surfaced, he hogged the feed on social media, barely days after India became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title. This could be a defining year for Pant, starting with the IPL. He hasn’t been a definite part of India’s white-ball team since winning the T20 World Cup in June 2024. In fact, he played just two T20Is and one ODI after Gautam Gambhir took charge as head coach of the Indian team. He has remained the backup wicketkeeper in the ODI setup. As India start preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, a good IPL could keep him ahead of the likes of Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson.

Since recovering from the side strain he suffered in the second week of January, he has been travelling across the country to find the best-quality practice sessions.

What aspect of Rishabh Pant’s game do you believe needs the most improvement for the upcoming IPL?

Pant’s preparations go beyond just fighting to win his place in India’s white-ball XI or justifying the tag of being IPL’s most expensive player. That he spent four intense days with Yuvraj Singh in Mumbai may seem as if he is just following in the footsteps of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Unlike Samson, who went to resurrect his technique ahead of the T20 World Cup, Pant approached Yuvraj to clear the cobwebs from his mind. Pant and Yuvraj have shared a strong bond for a number of years. But the bond runs deeper since Pant survived a horrific car accident in December 2022. Both have touched death and come back to take the field for India when few gave them a chance to even lead a normal life. They share a common outlook on life. For Pant, spending time with Yuvraj was more about reassuring himself about his approach than just working on technical aspects of the game. Those who have followed Pant during the time he endlessly warmed the benches with India’s white-ball team will tell you he puts himself through punishing training sessions — both in the nets and off the field. Lucknow Super Giants recently posted a video of 21-year-old batter Mukul Choudhary waiting nearly two hours for Pant to come out of the nets. Soham Desai, India’s former strength and conditioning coach, mentioned how Pant dragged him to the gym whenever he was free, without caring for the workload management programmes during last year’s ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. Former national selector Devang Gandhi, who was part of the committee that fast-tracked Pant, pointed out that Pant has the knack of bouncing back from difficult situations. “He has always been under intense scrutiny. But he has made stirring comebacks. He helped India win the Test series in Australia in 2020-21 after he was asked to warm the bench for most of the tour. He had a cracking IPL after coming back from his accident before making it to India’s T20 World Cup team in 2024. And then he had the stellar Test series in England last year after having a tough series in Australia and a modest IPL. These are indications that Pant is mentally very strong,” Gandhi told TOI. One can expect Pant to bat at No. 3 for LSG this season after enduring a forgettable season last year batting lower down the order. Pant’s decision to bat in the middle order had baffled experts since Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid had used him at No. 3 in the T20 World Cup. “He has to face more balls in an innings. I hope he cuts out the risks that come with playing reverse sweeps and fancy ramps. He has a solid technique and can play pace and bounce better than most in India. That’s what you will be looking for against top-quality fast bowling in South African conditions. Whatever videos I have seen on social media, it looks like he is trusting his basics. Having a mentor like Yuvraj will obviously help him,” Gandhi reckoned. Pant has had the time off to work on his cricket and is fresh for the IPL, which is a luxury for an India cricketer. The preps are done. It’s up to execution and reclaiming his place in India’s white-ball setup.

Rly min: Centre gives 3k cr/yr subsidy for Mumbai local trains | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The Centre provides an annual subsidy of Rs 3,000 crore for Mumbai’s suburban railway system, helping keep fares affordable for millions of daily commuters, railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in Parliament on Tuesday.Replying to questions, he said the subsidy translates into a significant fare concession and underlines govt’s continued financial support to the city’s lifeline, which carries over 70 lakh passengers. To improve commuter safety, 238 new suburban trains with automatic door-closing systems are being manufactured for Mumbai. The move gains significance amid rising concerns over passengers falling from overcrowded trains. Vaishnaw also highlighted ongoing capacity augmentation works in Mumbai, including the addition of platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and coaching terminals to ease congestion and improve operational efficiency. In a major boost to regional connectivity, the Centre is planning a Mumbai-Pune bullet train corridor, which is expected to cut travel time to 48 minutes. The project is part of a broader plan to develop seven high-speed rail corridors across the country. Preparations are underway for the Nashik Kumbh, with a detailed master plan covering key stations, such as Nashik Road and Deolali, along with construction of new road overbridges and underpasses to handle the surge in passenger traffic.

Shiv Sena corporators raise questions over unregistered doctors in Thane | Mumbai News

Thane: Shiv Sena corporators have raised questions over the recent proliferation of unregistered doctors in various pockets of the city and suburbs, accusing the municipal health department of turning a blind eye while residents’ lives were being put at risk. The issue was raised by Sena corporator Rajesh More during discussions in the Wednesday general body meeting for hiring honorary doctors. More claimed that fake practitioners—mostly from other states—were opening clinics in suburban pockets, especially in the slum areas, without any verification of their degrees by the municipal health department. He also flagged irregularities in the functioning of IVF and sonography centres operating in the city, especially in the backdrop of the recent racket exposed in Badlapur.Fellow party corporator Ramakant Madhavi joined in and said the problem was rampant in Diva and Kalwa, and Mumbra also, with new clinics appearing frequently without any checks by the municipal health department. After the administration claimed that the clinic registration was beyond the civic body’s jurisdiction, corporators demanded an immediate step to plug this apparent loophole, which was being exploited by these alleged bogus doctors.Accordingly, additional municipal commissioner Sandeep Malvi said that special inspection teams would be deployed in every ward, and FIRs would be filed against any quacks found operating.Officials said that Thane has 11 authorised IVF centres and 27 are awaiting approval, but recent inspections revealed many facilities functioned without proper recognition. “Surprise checks have already begun across sonography centres and IVF facilities,” said an official.

Rs 58 Crore Scam: ‘Shouldn’t think can get off lightly’: Mumbai court denies bail for mule a/c holders in Rs 58 crore digital arrest scam | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: Observing that granting bail would lead to the feeling gaining ground in the citizenry that people can commit the most outrageous acts and yet would be dealt softly by court, a special court on Monday rejected the bail plea of 14 accused arrested for allegedly being involved in a massive “digital arrest” scam that defrauded a former pharmaceutical executive of over Rs 58 crore. Special Judge Ajay Vitthal Gujarathi said, “Cyber crimes are rising day by day. Innocent people are losing their hard-earned money due to cyber frauds. Everybody must be aware that he or she should not permit or insist that another person misuse his or her bank account for criminal activities.”The judge further pointed to the legal and moral responsibility of citizens regarding their personal financial accounts. The judge further said the “larger interest of the society” outweighed individual requests for release, concluding that the applications were devoid of merit. The informant reported receiving a series of calls in Aug 2025 from individuals posing as officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The fraudsters claimed the informant was involved in illegal activities linked to the chairman of a now defunct airline and placed him and his wife under a “digital arrest”. Under extreme duress and the threat of legal action, the couple was coerced into transferring the amount into various bank accounts across several weeks.Public prosecutor Ramesh Siroya opposed the bail pleas arguing they are involved in a serious economic crime. The judge delivered the orders on March 16 after considering the gravity of the offences and the filing of a chargesheet by the nodal cyber crime police. The accused — Jafar Sayyed, Abdul Karim Khully, Mukesh Singhvi, Sureshkumar Patel, Musran Kumbhar, Bipingiri Goswami, Sunny Lodha, Faheem Shaikh, Arjun Kadvasara, Chiragkumar Chaudhari, Onkar Hase, Sunny Jain, Jayeshbhai Dhapa, and Akshay Kumar Meena — are facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The police investigation revealed that the accused allegedly facilitated the fraud by providing their bank accounts for illegal transactions in exchange for commission. The judge noted the organised nature of the crime, which involved the systematic misuse of financial infrastructure to divert large sums of money.
