NEW DELHI: India kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign with a win over the USA, but captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted the team had to dig deep after a shaky start. India posted 161/9, thanks largely to SKY’s unbeaten 84 off 49 balls after the top and middle order collapsed. The USA then managed 132/8 in reply, as India’s bowlers kept things under control.

After the match, Suryakumar was honest about India’s batting struggles. He said, “Only I can tell at the position we were in at 77/6, how much pressure we were in… We could’ve batted a little better.” He also spoke about the conditions, noting the pitch and morning light were unusual, but stressed that the team should not make excuses.“It was a little different wicket from what it is always at Wankhede. But at the same time, we knew when we woke up in the morning, we saw outside there wasn’t a lot of sun outside,” he added.Surya, who got the Man of the Match award for his exceptional knock, explained how he approached his innings when India were in trouble, adding, “I always felt that there was a need for a batter to bat till the end. I never felt that it was a 180-190 wicket. I felt it was a 140 wicket.” He revealed that coach Gautam Gambhir also advised him to stay till the end and back himself. “Gauti bhai told me the same thing during the break after the 14 overs. He told me, just try and bat till the end, you can cover it any time,” he continued.Drawing on his experience of playing in Mumbai maidans, he focused on timing his shots and managing the innings under pressure. He also reflected on his personal journey, saying, “I knew definitely someday it was going to come… I was trying to bat in such a way, hold the innings for the team, but it wasn’t happening.”India’s bowlers then stepped up. Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel shared key wickets to keep the USA chase in check. Though Milind Kumar, Shubham Ranjane and Suraj Krishnamurthi fought back with useful knocks, they could not match India’s experience in crunch moments.Earlier, India were rocked at 77/6 after Shadley van Schalkwyk ripped through the batting with four wickets, including a triple strike in one over. But Suryakumar’s calm and aggressive knock rescued India and gave the bowlers enough runs to defend. In the end, India won by 29 runs, an important but hard-earned victory that showed both their resilience and the areas they still need to improve.

Sanju Samson was not named in India’s playing XI for their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against the United States of America at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.India captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed at the toss that Ishan Kishan replaced Samson at the top of the order, opening the innings with Abhishek Sharma. Tilak Verma was included in the middle order. USA skipper Monank Patel won the toss and chose to bowl first.India also left out Jasprit Bumrah, who is unwell, with Mohammed Siraj coming into the XI. Washington Sundar did not make the team either.“We have Washi (Washington Sundar) missing out, Sanju (Samson) missing out. Unfortunately, Bumrah is not well so Siraj is playing,” said Suryakumar Yadav at the toss.“We were looking to bat first. Wicket looks good, there is wind around so we don’t expect dew. It’s alive even before the game starts and I am sure it is going to be even better,” he added.Samson had opened the batting in the last five T20I matches during the series against New Zealand but did not score many runs. In India’s only warm-up match before the T20 World Cup, Samson did not bat.Kishan, meanwhile, strengthened his case with recent performances. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can’t play for India right now – Here’s why | Cricket News

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can't play for India right now – Here's why
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (X-Cricbuzz)

The dust is still settling at Harare Sports Club, but Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s breathtaking display in the Under-19 World Cup final against England continues to resonate across the cricketing world. His 175 off just 80 balls was more than an innings—it was a record-breaking blitz. With 15 towering sixes and a strike rate that seemed to mock the intensity of a final, the 14-year-old prodigy from Bihar has left fans asking one burning question: If he can dismantle England’s top U19 players and smash IPL centuries, why isn’t he part of the senior Indian team? The answer lies with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The key obstacle for Sooryavanshi is the ICC’s Minimum Age Policy. Introduced in 2020 to protect the mental and physical well-being of young athletes, the rule mandates that players must be at least 15 to feature in international cricket.

Why Gautam Gambhir and Hardik Pandya had an intense chat before India vs USA T20 WC

Born on 27 March 2011, Vaibhav was still 14 during his World Cup triumph in February 2026. Ironically, while he is too young for the senior squad, he has also outgrown the U19 team. The BCCI enforces a strict “One-Tournament” rule for the U19 World Cup, designed to prevent age-group specialists and ensure a constant influx of fresh talent. Having already dominated the 2026 edition and won the Player of the Tournament award, Vaibhav is ineligible for the 2028 or 2030 editions, even though he would still be under 19.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Records

The excitement around the young opener is easy to understand, given the string of records he has broken in the past year:

  • U19 World Cup Final High: 175 off 80 balls against England, the highest score in a U19 final.
  • World Cup Sixes Record: 30 sixes in the 2026 edition, surpassing Dewald Brevis’ previous mark.
  • Global List-A Record: Youngest in history to score a List-A century at 14 years and 272 days.
  • Fastest 150 in History: 150 off 59 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, breaking AB de Villiers’ record.
  • IPL Century Milestone: Youngest IPL centurion at 14 years, 32 days, with a 35-ball ton for Rajasthan Royals.
  • India A Pioneer: First player to score a T20 century for India A, with a 32-ball hundred against UAE.
  • Youth ODI Speed: Fastest Youth ODI century with a 52-ball ton against England U19.
  • Youth Test Record: Fastest Youth Test century by an Indian (58 balls), second fastest in world history.
  • Domestic T20 Record: Youngest centurion in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with an unbeaten 108.
  • Boundary Landmark: First player to hit 100 career sixes in Youth ODIs.

For now, the “Sooryavanshi Storm” is confined to domestic cricket and franchise tournaments. But the clock is ticking. As soon as he turns 15 later in 2026, it is only a matter of time before the blue jersey bearing his name makes its debut at the highest level.

T20 World Cup: India’s spin riches give Suryakumar Yadav a ‘good headache’ | Cricket News

T20 World Cup: India’s spin riches give Suryakumar Yadav a 'good headache'
Suryakumar Yadav (Getty Images)

MUMBAI: Harshit Rana’s injury and the uncertainty surrounding Wash -ington Sundar may leave India short of allround options, but the hosts remain well-stocked in spin, with Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel forming a potent trio capable of troubling the best batters, especially on Indian pitches.T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said the team would not hesitate to play both Kuldeep and Varun together if con -ditions and opposition demanded it, calling the selection dilemma around the world-class wrist-spin -ners a “very good headache”. The duo featured together only once during the recent five-match T20I series against New Zealand—India’s sevenwicket win in the second T20I in Raipur.

T20 World Cup Groups Explained: Who Can Reach the Super 8

“It is an added advantage to have such quality bowlers available,” Surya said on Friday. “But at the same time, you have to look at the combination and the opposition. If there is a need to play two spinners—or two wrist-spinners—we will definitely do that. It’s always good to have options like Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, two of the best spinners in the world. It’s a very good headache.”Surya also indicated that India are keen to capitalise on Ishan Kis -han’s blazing form, even if it means fielding a top three compris -ing left-handers Abhishek Sharma, Kishan and Tilak Varma. Responding to a question on whether an overload of left-handers concerned the team management, the skipper again termed it a “good headache”.“Are you enjoying watching the fours and sixes being hit or not?” Surya quipped. “I think it’s an over-rated con -versation,” he added. “At this level, you’ve played enough cricket against left-arm spinners and offspinners.”

Teen batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi produced a knock for the ages, playing arguably the most breathtaking innings in U-19 World Cup history to guide India to a record-extending sixth title with a commanding 100-run victory over England in the final here on Friday. On the biggest stage of the tournament, the 14-year-old lit up the contest with a jaw-dropping 80-ball 175, an innings that will be remembered as one of the finest ever in age-group cricket. His knock, studded with a record 15 sixes and an equal number of fours, propelled India to a daunting 411 for 9 after England opted to bowl first. The onslaught left the English attack bruised and battered, with Sooryavanshi dismantling both pace and spin with remarkable ease and maturity beyond his years.

Sooryavanshi’s innings also saw him rewrite the record books. He became the fastest player to score 150 in Under-19 cricket, reaching the milestone in just 71 deliveries, and registered the highest individual score by any batter in an ICC tournament final. Having burst into the limelight during last year’s Indian Premier League, the prodigy showcased why he is already being talked about as a generational talent.England, set an improbable target of 412, showed brief resistance in the chase. They kept the required run rate within touching distance for large parts of the innings but lost wickets at regular intervals against India’s well-rounded bowling attack. Caleb Falconer fought a lone battle with a fluent 67-ball 115, but the task proved too steep. England were eventually bowled out for 311 in 40.2 overs, sealing a comprehensive win for India. After the triumph, Rajasthan Royals’ social media handle shared a touching moment, posting a photo of Sooryavanshi holding the trophy while making a video call and saying, ‘Papa, pranaam’. Fittingly, the young star remained grounded despite the historic achievement.Sooryavanshi dedicated his Player of the Final award to the Indian team’s support staff, saying, “I can’t express what I am feeling but the way we have all been working hard for the last 7-8 months and our support staff who have been with us for a long time and always made sure we are alright, I would like to dedicate the award to them.” He added, “For the last eight to nine months, the support staff and the team have been working together. That preparation has played a huge role in getting us to where we are today.”Capping off a dream tournament, Sooryavanshi also became the first player to win both the Player of the Final and Player of the Tournament awards in U-19 World Cup history, underlining his extraordinary impact on India’s title-winning campaign.

Backlift like Brian Lara, world champion at 14: The rise and rise of unconventional Vaibhav Sooryavanshi | Cricket News

Backlift like Brian Lara, world champion at 14: The rise and rise of unconventional Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Conventional wisdom suggests that a 13-year-old would struggle to even face deliveries bowled at speeds above 90 mph. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has challenged that assumption by striking bowlers such as Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Jofra Archer to all parts of the ground. In traditional cricket coaching, batters are taught to keep their hands close to the body during the backlift to maintain control over the bat swing. Sooryavanshi differs here as well. His backlift moves away from the body, going against what is often described as textbook technique.Still two-years younger than what Sachin Tendulkar’s age was at the time of his India debut, he has a bat-swing that reminds of Brian Charles Lara, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Yuvraj Singh; and like footballer Lamine Yamal, who has emerged as a teenage sensation at the highest level, Sooryavanshi’s age has rarely matched the stage and level he performs on.Talent could never be the question with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. It never was. With the 80-ball 175 knock against England in the Under-19 World Cup final on Friday, he also put to rest any talks of temperament too, with delivering on the biggest of stages.Sooryavanshi produced what can be counted among the most dominant innings in Under-19 World Cup history. His 175, which included 15 sixes, helped India post 411 for 9 against England in the final at Harare.England, under pressure after Sooryavanshi’s innings, were bowled out for 311 in 40.2 overs while chasing a target of 412 against India’s bowling attack.

Sooryavanshi tumbles records

The 14-year-old reached his century in 55 balls, becoming the second-fastest centurion in the history of the Under-19 World Cup.His innings is the highest individual score in an Under-19 World Cup final and came in the match that also produced the highest team total in a final of the tournament.Sooryavanshi reached his first fifty in 32 balls and continued at the same pace against the England bowlers. His second fifty came off 23 balls.Out of his 175 runs, 150 came through boundaries, with 15 sixes and an equal number of fours. During this phase, India’s scoring rate stayed close to 10 runs an over, and the projected total crossed 500 midway through the innings. He now holds the record for most sixes in a Youth ODI innings, surpassing his own mark of 14 sixes against UAE at ICCA Dubai in December.Sooryavanshi also owns the record for the fastest 150 in Under-19 cricket, reaching the mark in 71 balls. The previous record was held by England’s Ben Mayes, who took 98 balls against Scotland at the same venue earlier in the tournament.Vedant Trivedi, batting at the other end, faced only four deliveries between Sooryavanshi’s 100 and 150, underlining the speed at which the runs were scored.

Sooryavanshi’s rise

Sooryavanshi first came into wider attention in November 2024 when he became the youngest player to receive an IPL contract after Rajasthan Royals signed him for Rs 1.10 crore. He was 13 years and 243 days old at the time. By then, he had already represented India Under-19 and scored a century as an opener against Australia Under-19 in a four-day match in Chennai. One of the early highlights of his career was the 58-ball century against Australia Under-19, where he scored 104. At 13 years and 187 days, he became the youngest player to score a century in youth cricket, breaking the previous record held by Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. In the following months, Sooryavanshi continued to add records. On April 19, 2025, he made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants, hitting Shardul Thakur for a six over extra cover off his first ball. He scored 34 off 20 balls in that match. In his third IPL appearance, he scored a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, whose bowling attack included Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma and Rashid Khan. The hundred was the second-fastest in IPL history, behind only Chris Gayle’s 30-ball century in 2013.In July 2025, Sooryavanshi recorded the fastest Youth ODI century at the time, reaching the milestone in 52 balls. That record was later broken by Pakistan’s Sameer Minhas, who scored a century off 42 balls against Zimbabwe Under-19.He was named Bihar’s vice-captain for the first two rounds of the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season in October. The decision followed his performances on India Under-19’s tour of Australia, where he provided quick starts and scored a 78-ball century in the first four-day match in Brisbane. He finished as the second-highest run-scorer of the series, with 133 runs in three innings as India won 2-0.In November 2025, Sooryavanshi scored 144 off 42 balls for India A against UAE in the Asia Cup Rising Stars. His century came off 32 balls and was then the joint-third fastest by an Indian in men’s T20 cricket.A few weeks later, he scored 171 off 95 balls against UAE Under-19 in the opening match of the Under-19 Asia Cup.At 14 years and 272 days, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to score a century in men’s List A cricket. He achieved the feat while playing for Bihar against Arunachal Pradesh in the 2025–26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He reached his century in 36 balls, later scoring the fastest 150 in men’s List A cricket off 59 balls. He was dismissed for 190 off 84 balls, which included 16 fours and 15 sixes.

Man of the tournament

Sooryavanshi scored 439 runs and took 1 wicket in the Under-19 World Cup and was named Player of the Tournament after India won their sixth Under-19 World Cup title on Friday.“I had faith in my skills that I can contribute in big games and today it happened,” Sooryavanshi said at the post-match presentation. At 14, Sooryavanshi is already a world champion. He has delivered on most opportunities given to him so far. But he’s still a kid. It’s important to give him space and not put too many expectations on him. Leave him freely and watch him take the cricketing world by storm.

T20 World Cup: USA's Saurabh Netravalkar says players do not discuss India-Pakistan issues

MUMBAI: Amid political tensions between India and Pakistan, USA fast bowler Saurabh Netravalkar said such issues have never been a topic of discussion within the US team, even though many players have roots in the two countries. The India-Pakistan league-stage match of the 2026 T20 World Cup, scheduled in Colombo on February 15, is in doubt after Pakistan refused to take part. However, speaking on Friday, a day before USA’s tournament opener against India at the Wankhede Stadium, Netravalkar said the squad remains focused only on representing the United States.

T20 World Cup: Squads, Full Schedule, Venues and Key Details Explained

“Yes we have players from all parts of the world. We gel and bond together because of our love for the game. And no I don’t think we have ever discussed the India-Pakistan issues amongst ourselves. I don’t think so at least. We are all proud to play for USA and that’s what we focus on,” Netravalkar said.“We are a group of people from multiple countries across the group and what brings us together is the love of the game. We are proud to represent the USA,” he added. For Netravalkar, the match against India will also be a personal milestone. The left-arm seamer grew up in Mumbai and learned his cricket at the Wankhede. He said playing at the venue would fulfil a long-held ambition.“It feels like a full circle moment for me because I learnt my cricket here. I grew up in Mumbai, and getting an opportunity to play at Wankhede, which has been my dream since childhood as well. So nostalgic, emotional, (and) good to see (it happening). I’m looking forward to my family, friends to be there, and I’ll give my best,” said the 34-year-old.Netravalkar said the presence of former Mumbai players in the US squad, including Harmeet Singh and Shubham Ranjane, provides some understanding of Indian conditions, though he acknowledged that the game has changed significantly.“It definitely helps, but frankly speaking, it’s been a long time. Like, I last played in India in 2014, 2015, things have changed drastically. The game itself has changed drastically. It’s become so much more aggressive from the better’s perspective, so I wouldn’t compare it. Yes, the experience helps, but the game is very different,” he said.Netravalkar was part of the US team that beat Pakistan in Dallas a couple of years ago, when he took 2 for 18 in four overs in a seven-wicket win. On Indian pitches, he said the approach would be different, with the focus on damage control.“The focus will more be on minimising the damage, like you’re saying (there are) high scoring pitches here. Every ball that we bowl, (it should be) to the field, as long as we bowl to the field, we bowl to our matchups and maximise our chances. Defence might be the best attack on this kind of pitches and hopefully we induce a mistake on a false shot, that’s the best we can do as bowlers on these wickets,” he said.
