After Ajinkya Rahane's 'ask CA' jibe; Australia head coach comes in support of Cameron Green

NEW DELHI: Expectations are sky-high from Cameron Green the all-rounder. It began with Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Ajinkya Rahane’s response to a reporter’s question about Green not bowling in KKR’s opening IPL 2026 match, and then Cricket Australia issued a clarification on Rahane’s remark. Since then, the debate has gathered pace. Now, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has also weighed in, saying the all-rounder needs to balance the expectations from both his IPL franchise and the national team.“There’s huge expectation within the IPL, and there’s huge expectation with any all-rounder that shapes an Australian team. It’s not unfair, but there is an expectation around all-rounders that they contribute in a certain way,” McDonald told SEN Radio.Keeping in mind his all-round prowess, Green was bought by KKR for an eye-watering Rs 25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas buy ever in the IPL.“It’s almost like they want them to average 45 with the bat and average less than 30 with the ball. And there’s been very few that do that. I’m sure that his career will trend upwards,” McDonald said.

“We know he’s good enough. He’s just got to balance out all those expectations, and in particular, playing all three formats, which is a significant challenge for any cricketer,” he added.Rahane’s remark on an injured Green not bowling in the IPL match against Mumbai Indians had sparked a mild controversy over his fitness status. Later, Cricket Australia clarified that the KKR management is “fully aware” of the 26-year-old’s back niggle, which requires him to stay away from bowling for 10-12 days. However, McDonald said Green’s fitness concerns will not count against him when it comes to considering him as an all-format player, especially in Tests for Australia.“I think the answer to that is, yes (all-format player). I’ve got to talk to the selectors around that. But if you look at the last (Australian) team, Usman (Khawaja) has retired, and he vacates the No. 5 position,” the head coach said.“But you’ve got (Beau) Webster and Green that potentially can play in the same team, so that gives us incredible flexibility. But I think he’s (Green) good enough.“It’s only a matter of time before he gets to a situation where he’s performing for Australia. I think he’s got a few things to work on around his game, but that’s no different to anyone else,” he added. Also Read: PBKS vs GT Live Score

Debutant Cooper Connolly announced himself in style, scoring a brilliant maiden half-century to guide Punjab Kings to a thrilling three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 clash at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Tuesday.Chasing 163, Punjab Kings suffered an early blow as impact player Priyansh Arya fell for 7 in the second over to Kagiso Rabada. However, Prabhsimran Singh quickly shifted momentum with an aggressive counterattack, smashing back-to-back sixes off Rabada. Connolly joined the assault, and the duo powered PBKS to 55/1 at the end of the powerplay. They stitched together a crucial 76-run stand for the second wicket, putting the chase firmly on track.

GT Fight Back, Connolly Holds Nerve

Rashid Khan broke the partnership in the 10th over, dismissing Prabhsimran for a quickfire 37. Captain Shreyas Iyer kept the momentum going with a couple of sixes but was removed by Prasidh Krishna in the 13th over. Gujarat Titans then staged a strong comeback, picking up wickets in clusters as Nehal Wadhera, Shashank Singh, and Marcus Stoinis departed in quick succession.Despite the collapse at the other end, Connolly held his composure and brought up his maiden IPL fifty in just 34 balls. The 22-year-old remained unbeaten on 72 off 44 deliveries, striking five fours and five sixes, and steered Punjab home alongside Xavier Bartlett (11*) with five balls to spare. For Gujarat Titans, Prasidh Krishna was the standout bowler with figures of 3/29, while Rabada, Rashid Khan, Washington Sundar, and Ashok Sharma picked up a wicket each.Earlier, Punjab Kings produced a disciplined bowling effort to restrict Gujarat Titans to 162/6. Vijaykumar Vyshak starred with the ball, claiming three wickets, while Yuzvendra Chahal chipped in with two.Gujarat got off to a flying start, with Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan racing to 35/0 in just three overs. However, Marco Jansen provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Sudharsan for 13. Gill then anchored the innings alongside Jos Buttler, helping GT reach 54/1 at the end of the powerplay.Gill, after an aggressive start, slowed down before being dismissed for 39 by Chahal in the 10th over. Glenn Phillips added a quick 25 but fell to Vyshak, while Buttler top-scored with 38 before being dismissed by Chahal in the 16th over. Washington Sundar struggled to accelerate, managing 18 runs late in the innings.Vyshak finished with impressive figures of 3/34, while Chahal’s 2/28 ensured Gujarat Titans were kept in check despite their strong start.

Fast-track to Team India? Calls for Suryavanshi’s senior debut grow; Ashwin differs

NEW DELHI: A growing chorus of former cricketers is calling for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be fast-tracked into India’s T20 setup after his latest IPL heroics, even as voices of caution warn against rushing his rise. The 15-year-old lit up the Indian Premier League with a stunning 52 off 17 balls for Rajasthan Royals against Chennai Super Kings, bringing up a 15-ball fifty — the third-fastest in IPL history. His fearless assault came after RR restricted CSK to 127, sealing an emphatic eight-wicket win.

Calls to fast-track a prodigyFormer India batter Mohammad Kaif admitted he had initially been wary of the hype around Sooryavanshi but now believes the youngster is ready for the next level. “Last season I thought Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was getting hyped way too early. An old-school cricketer, I believe there should be no haste in fast-tracking young players. But a year later, I think he is ready to graduate to the next level,” Kaif wrote, adding that the teenager has the ability to “entertain and play match-winning knocks.Echoing that sentiment, former spinner Piyush Chawla was quoted as saying in ESPNCricinfo, “If he plays like that, I would love to see him fast-tracked.” Chawla highlighted Sooryavanshi’s consistency across formats, noting his ability to score not just hundreds, but “big hundreds.”Ambati Rayudu also backed the youngster’s immense potential, calling him “a cut above a lot of youngsters.” However, he pointed out the challenge of breaking into a world champion Indian T20 side, saying, “Don’t forget, our Indian team is a world champion team. It’s won the T20 World Cup. So to replace somebody in that side is not easy. To me, there are a few players ahead of him at the moment, because you tend to pick and build your teams ahead of the next ICC competition.Ashwin’s word of cautionWhile praise has poured in, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin urged restraint, stressing the need to manage expectations around a 15-year-old.“Don’t give him such a target. He is not even a guy, he is a kid,” Ashwin said on his YoouTube channel, emphasising that Sooryavanshi has time on his side. “If Sooryavanshi plays till 40, he has two and a half decades left in cricket. Leave him alone, he will come on his own when the time is right.”Ashwin, however, was effusive in his praise of the youngster’s ability. “He is too good to not play for India. He will play anyway eventually. When will he play? For that, we might have to wait a bit. Why are we always in a hurry.”Having already impressed with a record-breaking Under-19 World Cup campaign, Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise has captured the imagination of fans and experts alike. But as the debate intensifies, the challenge will be to balance excitement with patience.

According to a Geo News report, the PCB has informed players that political posts will not be tolerated under any circumstances, and any violation could lead to a fine of at least PKR 10 million. The move comes after Pakistani pacer Naseem Shah was fined PKR 20 million (USD 72,000) for a now-deleted post during the opening match of the 2026 Pakistan Super League. His post had questioned the treatment given to Maryam Nawaz at the Gaddafi Stadium.“Why is she being treated like the Queen at Lords?” Naseem had posted in reference to Maryam, who is the daughter of former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The PCB said its disciplinary committee found Naseem guilty of breaching clauses of his central contract and violating social media guidelines. He was issued a show-cause notice on March 27 after Maryam attended the PSL opening match as chief guest.Although the post was deleted and it was claimed that his account had been hacked, the board did not accept the explanation. It confirmed that Naseem had issued an unconditional apology.“Naseem’s reply was reviewed by the committee, and after evaluating everything, it has been determined that Naseem is found to have breached various clauses of his central contract, and a fine of PKR 2 crore has been imposed.”The PCB also said that Naseem’s social media adviser has been removed and blacklisted from working with any player under its system.

‘No plan B, C or D’: FIFA asserts Iran will play football World Cup in US, rejects venue shift plea | Football News

'No plan B, C or D': FIFA asserts Iran will play football World Cup in US, rejects venue shift plea

FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Tuesday said that Iran will take part in the upcoming World Cup despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.“Iran will be at the World Cup… That’s why we’re here. We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, I’m very happy,” Infantino said at half-time during Iran’s friendly against Costa Rica in Turkey, as cited by news agency AFP.Infantino went on to stress that Iran’s “matches will be played where they are supposed to be, according to the draw”.Earlier, in an interview with N+, the FIFA president had said, “Iran represents its people, those who live in Iran and those who live abroad. They qualified for this World Cup on the field; they were a team that qualified very early. It’‘No Plan B, C or D’:s a football-mad country. We want them to play; they will play in the World Cup, and there are no plans B, C, or D; it’s plan A. We live in the real world and we know what the situation is, which is very complicated, but we are working and we are going to make sure that Iran plays this World Cup in the best conditions. The Iranian Football Federation had earlier said it is “negotiating” with FIFA to shift its World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico due to the war involving the US and Israel with Iran.Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also said Mexico is ready to host Iran’s first-round matches if needed. The World Cup, to be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, will begin on June 11. Iran are scheduled to play their first Group G match against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15.Infantino had earlier said that Donald Trump assured that Iran’s team would be allowed to participate. The team is set to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by Egypt in Seattle. However, Trump later said Iran’s team should not travel to the tournament “for their own life and safety”.Iran responded to this by saying, “no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup”.Infantino attended Tuesday’s match near Antalya, although his visit was not announced in advance and media were kept away from the area where he was seated.Iran had also played a friendly against Nigeria in Belek last Friday. During that match, players wore black armbands and carried school bags during the national anthem to remember those killed in a strike on a primary school in Iran on the first day of the war.The airstrike, which took place in the southern city of Minab on February 28, killed at least 170 people, including students and teachers.

NEW DELHI: When will Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his India debut? When will the 15-year-old play for the senior Indian team? These questions are once again being asked by former cricketers and fans. The buzz has picked up pace after the teenager hammered a 17-ball 52 in Rajasthan Royals’ opening game of IPL 2026 against Chennai Super Kings. Now, former England captain Michael Vaughan has joined the conversation and wants the youngster from Samastipur, Bihar, to be part of the senior India setup.Vaughan believes Sooryavanshi should be picked for the England white-ball tour, scheduled in July. India are set to play five T20Is and three ODIs on that tour.

“When will he make his Indian debut? And I’m just looking, and I know we’re probably getting ahead of ourselves. It’s only the first innings of the IPL, but there’s a white-ball tour to England in a few months’ time. And if I was Indian cricket, I would get him on that tour. Not necessarily, he’s going to get into players that are in the team at the moment, but the one thing that he’s going to need is he’s going to need to be brought into the Indian team and the kind of surroundings of what Indian cricket is. Just bring him in, and if he plays one or two games, fantastic, but get him on a tour. Is he allowed to go on tours as a 15-year-old?” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.“I’d be giving him a little bit of experience with that Indian team. Not necessarily, as I said, jumping straight into the side, but just having him around. He’s good enough to play. I do not doubt that,” he added. After RR bowlers bundled out CSK for a modest 127, the spotlight once again shifted to Sooryavanshi when he walked out to open the innings. And he did what he does best — sending bowlers on a leather hunt.Sooryavanshi stitched a 75-run opening stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal and smashed 52 off just 17 balls, including five sixes and four fours, to help RR thrash CSK by eight wickets.“When you think he’s batting with someone at the other end, who I have in the last few years, he’s right up there with the best, in terms of all format players. Yashasvi Jaiswal, I think he’s a wonderful player. And I’m not saying he made Jaiswal look mediocre tonight, but there was a gulf in kind of fearlessness. You could see Jaiswal looking at the ball, just trying to play. This kid’s just looking at the ball to launch it into the stands. He just has remarkable freedom,” said Vaughan.“The two innings were a contrast. You had Sooryavanshi, who just went pure modern sixes. And I respected Jaiswal, because I don’t think he was seeing it as well as he could see it. So he didn’t just give it away. His strike rate wasn’t huge, but he’s had a little bit of time in the middle,” he added.Ahead of the IPL, Sooryavanshi had played a magnificent 175-run knock in the final against England to help India lift the Under-19 World Cup title. Also See: PBKS vs GT Live

Punjab Kings spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and Gujarat Titans star Jos Buttler shared a light-hearted moment ahead of their IPL 2026 clash in Mullanpur, rekindling memories from their time together at Rajasthan Royals. The duo, who went their separate ways after the 2025 mega auction, with Chahal joining PBKS for Rs 18 crore and Buttler moving to GT for Rs 15.75 crore, engaged in a playful exchange that quickly caught attention. In a video shared by PBKS, Chahal cheekily claimed that he once took on Buttler with the bat and smashed 20 runs in a single over. Buttler, however, was quick to fire back with a witty response. “Two years back, I smashed Jos Buttler – one over, 20 runs,” he said. Buttler quickly responded – “(You) Can’t get (the ball) outside the 30-yard circle.”

Punjab Kings set to face Gujarat Titans

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, two India T20I batters who have often been left out, will lead Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings respectively in their IPL opener on Tuesday, with both looking to make an impact. The 4th match of IPL will be played in the Mullanpur Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh. The pitch could offer some early assistance to pacers, making the powerplay a key phase. Dew is also expected to come into play later in the game, particularly in the second innings. The weather forecast for the PBKS vs GT clash looks perfect for an uninterrupted game in IPL 2026. No rain is expected in Chandigarh, with temperatures hovering around 28°C, ensuring pleasant conditions for both players and spectators. Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans have faced each other six times in IPL history, with both sides giving tough competition to each other, as the head-to-head record is tied with PBKS winning three encounters, and GT also came victorious on three occasions. Both the teams aim for a commanding start in the tournament while PBKS will also look to improve their record at home, having won only two of five matches in New Chandigarh last season despite reaching the final.

‘Chennai offered double of BCCI’s prize’: Culture that made CSK a champion team | Cricket News

'Chennai offered double of BCCI's prize': Culture that made CSK a champion team

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) remain one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, sharing the record of five titles with Mumbai Indians and boasting 10 final appearances. Their dominance in a fiercely competitive league reflects not just on-field excellence but also a well-structured system built over the years. A major factor behind their sustained success has been the stability provided by the ownership group, which has consistently backed players and maintained a balanced squad.CSK’s philosophy has always revolved around trust and continuity. Unlike many franchises, they have prioritized retaining a strong core group even after auctions, showing long-term faith in their players, support staff, and team environment. This approach has also contributed to nurturing players who go on to perform at the international level. They have shown remarkable consistency not just on the field but also off it, with Stephen Fleming serving as their head coach since 2009. His long-term guidance has been key in building a stable, experienced team, helping CSK maintain a winning culture and remain one of the most dominant IPL franchises.Former India cricketer Abhinav Mukund highlighted another unique aspect of CSK’s culture, their strong backing of players beyond the field. He revealed that the franchise has a long-standing tradition of doubling the prize money offered by the BCCI, regardless of the team’s result, a gesture that reflects their commitment to player welfare. “I think the credit should also go to the management. That time, they clearly told us that whatever prize money BCCI is offering you, whether we are losing or winning, we will double it. And this is a tradition of Chennai from day one. Ask any clear Chennai player, they will say ‘this is a tradition that they have followed’, so at that point it felt like a huge thing,” Mukund said on Doordarshan Sports.

CSK’s unforgettable start in IPL 2026

In their IPL 2026 opener on March 30, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured a crushing 8-wicket victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Guwahati. After RR’s pace attack, led by Nandre Burger (2/26) and Jofra Archer (2/19), dismantled the CSK lineup for a meager 127, 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi stole the show by smashing the season’s fastest fifty in just 15 balls. Rajasthan chased down the target in a mere 12.1 overs, finishing at 128/2 to hand CSK a heavy defeat in a match that also featured Sanju Samson’s quiet debut for Chennai and Ravindra Jadeja’s successful two-wicket return to the Royals.

NEW DELHI: Two captains – Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer – will be eyeing their first points of IPL 2026 when Gujarat Titans take on Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on Tuesday. For Gill, India’s Test and ODI skipper, the season presents a big opportunity to reassert his place in T20 cricket. Despite being named T20I vice-captain at one stage, a dip in form saw him miss out on the T20 World Cup squad – a tournament India eventually went on to win. As a result, the spotlight will firmly be on how he adapts his game to the evolving demands of T20 batting. For Iyer, the aim will be to put the disappointment of the 2025 final behind him. After leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024, he was released ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction despite that success. He was then bought by Punjab Kings for a whopping Rs 26.75 crore.

KKR Depart from Mumbai after losing to Mumbai Indians

Will he finally go all the way and lead Punjab Kings to a title this time?Ahead of the mouth-watering clash between Gujarat Titans and Punjab Kings, here’s a look at five players who could change the course of the game:Sai Sudharsan: Gujarat Titans will be hoping for a solid opening stand from their right-left combination of Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill. Sai was last season’s leading run-scorer with 759 runs and returns after recovering from a rib injury. His recent domestic form, including a century and multiple half-centuries, suggests he could pick up where he left off. In 40 IPL matches so far, the left-hander has scored 1,793 runs at an average of 49.80 and a strike rate of 145.89.Shubman Gill: If he gets going, he can dismantle any attack in the world. While Gill has been among the most consistent performers in the IPL – second only to Virat Kohli in run-scoring since 2023 – questions around his scoring tempo remain. He had an impressive season last year, scoring 650 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 155.87 and averaging 50. Hungry to make a statement in the T20 format, Gill will look to adopt a more aggressive approach this season. He has scored 3,866 runs in 118 IPL matches at an average of 39.44 and a strike rate of 138.71, including four centuries.Shreyas Iyer: Like Gill, Iyer will also be keen to make a statement. He will want to begin IPL 2026 with both a win and a solid performance with the bat. After leading Punjab Kings to the final last year, he will be eager to cross the final hurdle this time. In his IPL career, Iyer has played 133 matches, scoring 3,731 runs at an average of 34.22 and a strike rate of 133.34.Priyansh Arya: A fearless striker of the ball, Priyansh Arya has quickly made a name for himself and cemented his place as a regular opener for Punjab Kings. A product of the Delhi Premier League — where he famously hit six sixes in an over – he was PBKS’ third-highest run-scorer in IPL 2025. Alongside Prabhsimran Singh, he has the ability to dominate the Powerplay and provide explosive starts. He also recorded the fifth-fastest IPL hundred (39 balls) against CSK in his debut season. Punjab Kings will hope he continues his attacking form.Arshdeep Singh: Fresh from India’s T20 World Cup triumph, the left-arm pacer will be brimming with confidence. Arshdeep was Punjab Kings’ leading wicket-taker in the 2025 edition with 21 wickets in 17 matches and finished as the sixth-highest wicket-taker overall. Known for his ability to swing the ball and strike in the Powerplay, he will be a key bowler this season. Arshdeep has taken 97 wickets in 82 IPL matches and is just three wickets away from reaching the 100-wicket mark.
