PCB to run owner-less Multan Sultans in PSL, sale planned after season
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will run the Multan Sultans franchise in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 season.Speaking at a press conference, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the board will manage the franchise for the upcoming season and appoint former cricketers to handle operations. The franchise will be offered for sale after the tournament ends.

“Multan Sultans will be operated by the PCB this year. Once the PSL concludes, we will carry out the auction process and put the franchise up for sale. However, for this season, the board will run the Sultans,” Naqvi said.He said a professional cricketer will be appointed to lead the franchise for PSL 11.“For this purpose, we will appoint an acting head within the next eight to ten days who will oversee the team. A professional cricketer will be brought in to manage Multan Sultans for this season,” he added. The decision follows former owner Ali Tareen’s exit from the franchise, which he had owned since 2018. Tareen cited financial reasons for stepping away. After his exit, the PCB issued a legal notice to Tareen, accusing him of not complying with the ownership agreement and demanding an apology. Tareen later released a video response in which he offered a sarcastic “apology” and tore up the notice.Meanwhile, the auction for two new PSL franchises is scheduled for January 8, 2026, with 10 bidders expected to take part.PSL 2026 will begin on March 26 and end on May 3. The revised schedule means the league will overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the second year in a row.Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars are the most successful teams in PSL history, with three titles each. Lahore Qalandars are the current champions.

Decks cleared for Shreyas Iyer’s ODI return | Cricket News

Decks cleared for Shreyas Iyer's ODI return

India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is all set to return for the ODI series against New Zealand, if there are no late red flags. Iyer is training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is likely to be there till December 30.The right-hander will then link-up with the Mumbai Vijay Hazare Trophy squad in Jaipur on January 2. He is expected to feature in the matches on January 3 and 6 before joining the Men in Blue for the three-match series starting in Vadodara on January 11.

‘Not something I changed suddenly’: Shreyas Iyer explains how he regained confidence; reacts to series defeat vs Australia

“We are hearing positive developments around Shreyas. He is very likely to play two games for Mumbai on January 3 and January 6. The final schedule will depend on clearance from CoE but signs are positive for playing those games in Jaipur. He is batting well in the nets and no discomfort,” says a MCA official aware of developments. As TimesofIndia.com had first reported, Iyer batted for close to an hour in Mumbai on December 23 without any discomfort and made his way to the CoE for further assessment. He had already resumed regular physical training and gym work after recovering from the nasty injury. The blunt injury to the abdomen forced him to miss the ODI series vs South Africa and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Mumbai. Iyer’s return to the ODI set-up is a big boost for the ODI set-up as it allows the team management to firm up their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli firing on all cylinders, Iyer’s return to the No.4 position will add a lot of solidity to the middle-order. In Iyer’s absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad was tried in the position and while he returned with a hundred, it will be difficult to accommodate the two right-handers in the Playing XI. The selectors are likely to pick the squad after receiving the necessary clearances for Iyer from the CoE and an announcement is expected early in the first week of January. As TimesofIndia.com had reported, both Bumrah and Pandya are likely to be rested keeping the T20 workload in mind and a call would need to be taken for the second wicketkeeper spot. Ishan Kishan is in red hot form and will make it a very happy headache for the selectors when they assemble to pick the squad for the three fixtures.

Shaheen Afridi smashed for 19 in an over, limps off injured as BBL nightmare continues | Cricket News

Shaheen Afridi smashed for 19 in an over, limps off injured as BBL nightmare continues

Shaheen Afridi’s difficult stint with Brisbane Heat showed no sign of easing on Saturday night, as another expensive spell and an untimely injury deepened concerns around the Pakistan fast bowler’s form and fitness in the Big Bash League. Facing Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba, Afridi endured a bruising 12th over in which Australian-born Italian batter Harry Manenti took him apart, conceding 19 runs in a single burst. The night worsened later when Afridi picked up a knee injury while fielding, forcing him to limp off and take no further part in the contest, a worrying sight for Pakistan with the T20 World Cup now only six weeks away.

From MCG to T20 World Cup snub: How Indian cricket let Shubman Gill down

Afridi was unable to complete his full allocation of overs and finished with figures of 3 overs for 26 runs without a wicket. Those numbers, however, masked a promising start. He was sharp and disciplined with the new ball, giving away just seven runs across his first two overs and briefly hinting at a turnaround. The momentum shifted when he returned in the middle overs. Matthew Short set the tone by pulling a short delivery through backward square leg for four before nudging singles to keep the strike moving. Manenti then seized control, launching three successive boundaries as Afridi struggled to regain his rhythm, the over unraveling rapidly. The injury incident followed shortly after. During the 14th over of the Strikers’ chase, Jamie Overton drove a yorker-length ball from Xavier Bartlett straight back past the bowler. Afridi, positioned at mid-on, chased hard but appeared to twist or jar his knee while running. He was clearly uncomfortable, completed the over, then limped from the field and did not return. With Pakistan still searching for their first ICC trophy since the 2017 Champions Trophy, Afridi remains central to their T20 plans, making any injury a major concern. Team management and fans alike will be hoping the setback proves minor. The broader picture has been equally troubling. Afridi’s BBL campaign has yielded just two wickets from four matches, with an average of 76.50 and an economy rate of 11.19. Earlier in the tournament, during his debut outing for Brisbane Heat against Melbourne Renegades in Geelong on December 15, he was even removed from the attack for bowling dangerously. In the match itself, Brisbane Heat defended a competitive total of 179 after being sent in to bat. Max Bryant provided the impetus with a blistering 63 off 32 balls. Adelaide’s chase was anchored by skipper Matthew Short, who scored 63 from 39 deliveries, while Jerrssais Wadia threatened late with a rapid 34 off 16. In the end, Heat held their nerve, bowling the Strikers out for 172 with one ball to spare to seal a narrow win.

Ashes: Joe Root joins Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Virat Kohli in elite list; becomes 9th batter to achieve this feat

Anrich Nortje press conference: ‘Hopefully I get selected,’ on T20 World Cup selection

Root, who had never scored a century on Australian soil, finally broke the curse as he scored an unbeaten 138 in the first innings of the second Ashes 2025-26 Test at Brisbane.Despite a century in the Brisbane Test, Root has only managed 234 runs in four Ashes Tests. England, despite winning the recently concluded fourth Test, have conceded the series to the Aussies, as the series scoreline reads 3-1.In the Boxing Day Test, England defeated Australia by four wickets, registering their first victory on the tour. In the match, England opted to bowl first. Josh Tongue’s five-wicket haul helped bowl Australia out for 152 before England collapsed to 110, trailing by 42. Australia then struggled again on a difficult pitch, managing just 132 in their second innings, setting England a target of 175. England’s chase was steadied by solid partnerships at the top, and despite a late wobble, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith saw them home to a memorable four-wicket victory.Notably, Australia had extended their dominance at home by winning the first three Ashes Tests in a row, stretching their unbeaten streak against England in Australia to 16-0. England’s victory in the fourth Test has now brought that run to an end.

NEW DELHI: Vishal Jayswal was an unknown name until he claimed the most prized wicket of his cricketing career — Virat Kohli – a dismissal that instantly etched his name into the record books.Jayswal tempted Kohli out of the crease, spinning the ball sharply past the outside edge and the wicketkeeper made no mistake and whipped off the bails to send the well-set Delhi batter back for 77.

Virat Kohli’s childhood coach makes a big statement on 2027 ODI World Cup

While Gujarat narrowly lost the thriller by seven runs, the moment belonged to the young spinner, who was embraced by teammates for his unforgettable breakthrough. As the rest of the Gujarat players headed back to the dressing room, Jayswal lingered. He requested the umpire for the match ball — the one with which he had dismissed Kohli.Ball in hand, he nervously walked towards the Delhi dressing room. Spotting Kohli, he hesitated. Kohli noticed him, smiled, and said: “Aaja, aaja” (Come in).A nervous Jayswal pulled the ball out of his pocket and said: “Bhaiya, ball pe ek autograph chahiye” (Please give me an autograph).Kohli put his kit aside, asked Jayswal to sit down, and made him comfortable before signing the ball.

.

“Achha ball daalta hai. Hard work karta rah. Opportunity aayega, wait kar and mehnat kar [You bowl really well. Keep working hard. Your opportunity will come — be patient and keep putting in the effort],” Kohli told him.Jayswal admitted the pressure of bowling to a modern day great.“I didn’t have any specific plan against him. He’s a legend of the game. Just bowling to him is a huge moment, and there’s immense pressure when he’s at the crease. I spoke to him and he gave me a lot of tips, how to remain calm under pressure, fitness etc,” Jayswal said, during an exclusive chat with TimesofIndia.com.“Of course, I’m really happy to have dismissed him. Having a wicket like that next to your name is very special,” the spin allrounder said.INSPIRED BY AXAR PATELLike Axar Patel, Jayswal hails from Nadiad in Gujarat’s Kheda district and began his cricket journey at the same academy where Team India’s T20I vice-captain took his first steps.

Jayswal lost his father when he was just eight months old.As he grew older, cricket became his passion, and he told his mother of his dream to become a professional cricketer. The road was far from easy, but his mother stood firmly by him.“The journey was extremely tough, but whatever I am today is because of my mother,” said Jayswal, who finished as the highest wicket-taker in the 2022–23 CK Nayudu Trophy.“Taking her to the awards function was one of the proudest moments of my life.”

According to Jayswal, Axar has played a crucial role in shaping his career.“Axar bhai has helped me immensely — from my cricket kit to jerseys and bats. I look up to him as an inspiration and mentor,” he said.“I’ve always wanted to be a spin-bowling all-rounder like him. He teaches me how to be a game-changer — when to attack, how to control the run rate, and how to stay mentally strong.”Recalling Axar’s advice, Jayswal added with a smile: “He always tells me: ‘Batting mein dhyaan sirf ball pe rakho, aur bowling mein batsman ke pair aur wickets pe.’ Those tips have helped me a lot.”

NEW DELHI: Pakistan international kabaddi player Ubaidullah Rajput has been indefinitely banned by the national federation after featuring for an Indian team in a private tournament in Bahrain earlier this month. The Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) took the decision following an emergency meeting on Saturday, concluding that Rajput had travelled abroad for the event without obtaining the mandatory no-objection certificate (NOC) from the federation or other relevant authorities.

Why Mumbai’s iconic Azad Maidan is no longer safe for cricket | Bombay Sport Exchange

PKF secretary Rana Sarwar said Rajput has the right to appeal against the decision before a disciplinary committee.Sarwar said the federation viewed the matter seriously, pointing out that Rajput not only travelled overseas without approval but also represented an Indian team, wore its jersey and was seen wrapping the Indian flag around his shoulders after winning a match.“But he (Rajput) has claimed it was a total misunderstanding and he was never told the team he would play for in the private tournament would be an Indian side. But he is still guilty of flouting NOC rules,” Sarwar said.Rajput landed in controversy after videos and photographs from the GCC Cup, showing him wearing an Indian jersey and waving the Indian flag, went viral on social media.Sarwar added that other players were also banned and fined for participating in the tournament without obtaining the required NOCs.Earlier, Rajput had issued an apology, saying he was invited to play in the Bahrain tournament and was included in a private team.“But I didn’t know until later they had named the side Indian team and I told the organizers to not use names of India and Pakistan. In private competitions in the past, Indian and Pakistan players have played together for a private team but never under the names of India or Pakistan,” he had said.“I found out later that I was misrepresented as playing for the Indian team which I can’t think of doing after the conflict.”
