Sri Lanka pacer Nuwan Thushara is set to miss the upcoming Indian Premier League after being denied a No Objection Certificate by Sri Lanka Cricket, following the introduction of a strict new fitness policy. As part of the revised guidelines, the board has made it compulsory for players to meet newly established physical performance benchmarks before receiving clearance to feature in overseas franchise leagues, including the IPL and the PSL. Thushara’s participation hinged on clearing these fitness tests, but reports suggest he fell short of the required standards. According to Newswire Sri Lanka, the board’s decision to withhold the NOC could result in the pacer losing his contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which is believed to be worth around INR 1.6 crore. The development adds to a challenging period for Thushara. After playing a key role in Sri Lanka’s 2025 Asia Cup campaign, he was later sidelined ahead of the T20 World Cup, even as the team dealt with multiple injuries in the pace department. His absence from selection raised concerns about his standing within the national setup. While Thushara is reportedly not dealing with any injury and remains fit to bowl, questions over his overall fitness levels appear to have influenced the selectors’ decision under the new policy framework. The board has taken a firm stance, granting NOCs only to players who meet the prescribed fitness criteria. Several Sri Lankan players, including Dushmantha Chameera, Dasun Shanaka, Pathum Nissanka, and Kamindu Mendis, have cleared the benchmarks and secured approval to participate in the IPL. In contrast, Kusal Janith Perera has been allowed to feature in the PSL without undergoing the fitness tests, with the board clarifying that he is not currently in contention for national selection. At RCB, Thushara had a realistic chance of breaking into the playing XI. With lead overseas pacer Josh Hazlewood ruled out at the start of the season and Yash Dayal also unavailable, the franchise was left with limited options. Alongside New Zealand seamer Jacob Duffy, Thushara was among the frontrunners, especially given his prior IPL experience. He was part of RCB in 2025, where he featured in one match and returned figures of 1 for 26 from four overs. The previous season, he represented Mumbai Indians, claiming eight wickets at an average of 32.12.

The BCCI has officially unveiled the schedule for the second phase of the Indian Premier League 2026, confirming fixtures from April 13 to May 24.The remaining league-stage fixtures, comprising 50 matches, will be staged across 12 venues in India. These include Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Dharamsala, Raipur and New Chandigarh. The phase begins with Sunrisers Hyderabad facing Rajasthan Royals in Hyderabad. The revised plan comes after the board had initially released only the first 20 fixtures, up to April 12, due to the announcement of assembly election dates in states such as Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. The remaining schedule was finalised later, ensuring minimal disruption to the tournament. Despite concerns around a potential energy and fuel crisis impacting logistics or attendance, the tournament will proceed as planned without any reduction in matches.

IPL 2026: LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka breaks silence on Pant captaincy ‘speculations’

Sanjiv Goenka, owner of Lucknow Super Giants, has firmly shut down speculation surrounding Rishabh Pant’s captaincy ahead of IPL 2026, calling out what he implied were baseless reports doing the rounds. Pant had come under heavy criticism after a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign. Bought for a massive Rs. 27 crore at the mega auction, expectations were sky-high, but the left-hander struggled to deliver, scoring just 269 runs in 13 matches at an average of 24.45. As a result, rumours began circulating that LSG were considering a leadership change before the new season. Goenka, however, made his stance clear with a public message backing Pant’s leadership and character.

Sanjiv Goenka post

Sanjiv Goenka post

“Heading into the season, I had read the speculations around @RishabhPant17’s captaincy and smiled. We’ve spent enough time together to know his character and commitment. Have a great season, Cap!” Goenka wrote on X. This is not the first time such rumours have surfaced. During IPL 2025, similar claims gained traction on social media, suggesting Pant could even be dropped due to concerns over his hefty price tag. The wicketkeeper-batter responded strongly at the time, calling out the spread of misinformation. “I understand fake News gives more traction to content, but let’s not build everything around it . Little sense and credible news will help more rather making fake news with agenda. Thanks, have a good day . Let’s be responsible and sensible what we put out on social media,” Pant had posted. With the noise around his role addressed, focus now shifts back to cricket. Pant’s form will be under close watch when LSG begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on April 1.

CSK’s risky call: Injured Spencer Johnson replaces injured Nathan Ellis | Cricket News

CSK’s risky call: Injured Spencer Johnson replaces injured Nathan Ellis
Spencer Johnson has not played any competitive game since last year’s IPL.

NEW DELHI: The announcement of Spencer Johnson as a replacement for the injured Nathan Ellis for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has created quite an uproar. There had been a bit of mystery around Johnson’s signing as a replacement player. The 30-year-old was earlier signed by Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) but pulled out of the tournament citing personal reasons. A few days later, he joined the five-time IPL champions for Rs 1.5 crore (US$160,000). Interestingly, Johnson’s PSL salary was higher than his IPL deal, as he was contracted with the Gladiators for approximately PKR 56 million (around ₹1.87 crore or $200,000).

A day after his official announcement, CSK on Wednesday posted on X that the left-arm quick will join the squad between April 21 and 23. The reason remains unknown. TimesofIndia.com reached out to Kasi Viswanathan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CSK, but multiple calls went unanswered.Johnson has not played any competitive cricket since the last IPL, where he featured for Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR had acquired his services for Rs 2.80 crore, and the lanky pacer played four matches, picking up just one wicket. He was later released ahead of the 2026 mini auction. An update on Johnson was provided by former Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris, who is currently the coach of South Australia, on the eve of the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria.“Spencer is jumping around a little bit,” Harris said, referring to him pulling out of the PSL and then joining the IPL.“He got some good news, I think four or five days ago, about his back,” Harris said. “Finally, the crack in his back has healed. He’s had quite a frustrating eight to ten months. So the good news is he’s back bowling. He’s building up again.“IPL, I think there might be an opportunity. We’re still waiting to see what happens there. He’s obviously got to do a fair bit of bowling before he goes back into competitive cricket. So we’re working on that as we speak.“But it would be good to see Spence back playing cricket. He’s obviously had some bad luck over the last two years.”

He feels that although he is only going at about 60%, the ball is coming out nicely. He is bowling more and trying to build up. It is now about getting enough bowling load into his body to allow him to play.

Ryan Harris | South Australia coach

Johnson, who has played five ODIs and eight T20Is for Australia, is recovering from a back injury.Harris also revealed that the pacer has resumed bowling but is currently operating at just over half pace, and he is working on modifying his action to stay fit.“We’ve been doing that ever since he’s been able to roll his arm over,” Harris said.“We’ve been just tweaking a couple of things, and he’s doing really well. He had a bowl the day before yesterday. I wasn’t there, but I reviewed some video. We’ve been very conscious of what he’s trying to achieve, trying to straighten him up a little and take some pressure off his back.“But he’s done it really well. He feels that although he’s only going at about 60%, the ball is coming out nicely. As we speak, he’s bowling more and trying to build up. It’s now about getting enough bowling load into his body to allow him to play.”

Poll

Is it a wise decision for CSK to replace Nathan Ellis with another injured player?

Only time will tell whether the Australian quick will reach peak fitness by the time he joins the CSK squad, but this is curious that an IPL team has replaced an injured player with another injured player.TimesofIndia.com has learnt that the supply of available players has taken a hit, as several cricketers who went unsold in the IPL mini auction are currently playing in the PSL.Johnson became the third player after Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani and Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka to snap up IPL deals despite being contracted in the PSL. However, with Bangladesh players not being considered and IPL teams reluctant to pick players from Associate nations, franchises are struggling to find replacements.CSK will open their campaign in IPL 2026 on March 30 against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati.

‘Give him a challenge’: How teenage Virat Kohli overcame coach bias with runs

NEW DELHI: Batting maestro Virat Kohli’s mental toughness has long been a defining trait of his career, and stories from his early days continue to underline just how deep that resilience runs. From playing a Ranji Trophy match the day after his father’s death to dominating age-group cricket, Kohli’s journey has been built on defiance in the face of adversity.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Kohli’s former Delhi teammate Jagrit Anand sheds light on another instance from his Under-17 days where the batter rose above challenges — this time, even when a coach was not in his corner. Speaking on The Quiet Rise Podcast by Meha Bhardwaj Alter, Anand revealed that despite a prolific previous season, Kohli faced resistance from within the setup.

“When we were playing Under-17, we had played two seasons – Virat had scored a double century and a couple of centuries in the previous season. Virat was a known name in the Delhi circuit. He was always outstanding. Now, when it came to the next season, there was a particular coach who was not too much in favour of Virat, so he was trying to pull him down in his own ways in spite of having that kind of record,” Anand said. But if anything, adversity only fuelled Kohli further. Recalling a high-pressure match against Punjab in Patiala, Anand highlighted the young batter’s mindset. “Virat was always someone who, if you give a challenge, he would love it,” he said. Before the game, Kohli made his intent clear in a team conversation. “He said, ‘I will beat the living hell out of these people,’ in his proper Delhi language,” Anand revealed. What followed was a statement performance — Kohli smashed a double century against a strong Punjab attack featuring pacer Sidharth Kaul. The innings was part of a remarkable run. Kohli went on to score another double hundred that season along with three more centuries, leading Delhi to the Vijay Merchant Trophy title. “So, you see, that kind of challenge. Imagine the coach has the authority in that age group, but that still did not stop someone like Virat,” Anand added. That stunning run of form paved the way for Kohli’s rapid rise, including a List A debut soon after and leading India to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2008.

Yograj Singh slams Abhishek Sharma: ‘You fail because your mind is somewhere else’

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has come down heavily on Abhishek Sharma despite India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph, questioning the opener’s focus and discipline after what he termed an inconsistent campaign.Abhishek endured a mixed tournament in his maiden World Cup appearance. After starting with three consecutive ducks, he showed glimpses of his explosive ability with a half-century in the Super 8 stage and a stunning 19-ball fifty in the final against New Zealand. However, with just 141 runs in eight matches overall, his form remained under scrutiny.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Speaking to InsideSport, Yograj did not mince words while assessing the youngster’s performances. “You fail because your mind is somewhere else. What is happening to Shubman Gill, Abhishek? The failure comes only when your mind is diverted somewhere else. That is what is happening with Abhishek,” he said. The former cricketer also pointed to off-field distractions, stressing the importance of discipline. “The guy walks around doing reels; that isn’t his job. He should bloody well go to bed at 9 PM, wake up at 5 AM, and play a thousand balls,” Yograj added, underlining the work ethic required at the highest level.Yograj, whose son Yuvraj Singh has played a key role in shaping Abhishek’s game, drew comparisons while highlighting the importance of discipline. “It would take him another age to go closer to Yuvraj Singh. The whole universe works on discipline. That’s how cricketers should work. Where are cricketers going wrong? Parties, girls, money, shooting all the time,” he said.‘You cannot keep hitting sixes…’He further criticised Abhishek’s approach with the bat, particularly his tendency to go aerial too often. “I’m very disgusted with him (Abhishek). There are times when I drop him messages – don’t take this game for granted. He will always say ‘yes, sir’. There is something called a single, a double, and a boundary. Every time you cannot hit the ball in the air. You cannot keep hitting sixes and entertaining the crowd. You will fail,” Yograj stated. While Abhishek’s fearless batting remains a vital asset for India, Yograj’s remarks serve as a stark reminder that consistency, discipline, and game awareness are crucial to sustaining success at the highest level.

I won’t make the start of that, but it shouldn’t be too long before I’m back out there playing,” he added in the episode reportedly shot last week.Cummins outlined a cautious approach to his recovery, revealing he is currently bowling every third day. “I’m back bowling. I’m bowling basically every third day at the moment. We’ve mapped out a plan to get me right by the middle of the tournament, so hopefully, if nothing goes wrong, I’ll play the back half plus the finals,” he said. The injury had earlier ruled him out of the T20 World Cup and restricted him to just one Test during the Ashes. Having suffered a minor setback during recovery, Cummins is now focused on ensuring he returns fully fit for the business end of the IPL.

Cummins backs Ishan Kishan as SRH captain

In his absence, Sunrisers Hyderabad have entrusted the captaincy to wicketkeeper-batter Kishan, a move Cummins strongly endorsed. “Ishan’s had a really successful captaincy stint with his local side in the last year or so,” Cummins said, referring to Kishan’s leadership role with Jharkhand.Cummins also highlighted the importance of local players in bridging communication gaps within a diverse squad. “We’ve got quite an experienced bowling group of local guys… I’m definitely leaning on the local guys who do know them well — or even speak the language,” he explained.Sunrisers Hyderabad, who last won the IPL in 2016, will begin their campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday, hoping to stay competitive until their regular captain returns for the decisive phase.

IPL team captains have been warned about fielder movement during catches and the officials of BCCI have shared an important update regarding impact player rule ahead of the 2026 season. Teams have been clearly instructed that a catch will only be considered valid if the fielder has complete control of both the ball and their body before any celebration begins. As per Clause 33.3 of the playing conditions, “The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his own movement. While this rule is not new, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) emphasized its importance during a captains’ meeting held on Wednesday. Officials presented several video clips, including examples from the recent T20 World Cup, where catches were deemed invalid due to lack of full control. The message was clear: this rule will now be strictly enforced. Former India pacer Javagal Srinath and elite umpire Nitin Menon addressed this segment during the 90-minute session.

Impact Player Rule to Stay

The meeting also confirmed that the Impact Player rule will remain in place for at least another season, with no immediate plans for review. Despite concerns raised by some players, the BCCI and IPL officials made it clear that the rule will continue until at least the 2027 season.Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel openly criticised the rule, stating: “I don’t like this rule, honestly, because I am an all-rounder. Earlier, you would pick an all-rounder for both batting and bowling. Because of this rule, teams now prefer specialists.”There is a growing belief within the cricketing community that the rule could hinder the development of all-rounders. However, officials indicated that any formal review of the rule will only be considered after the 2027 season.A franchise representative who attended the meeting confirmed: “It was discussed, and it was made clear to all of us that the Impact Player rule is here to stay for at least two more seasons.”
