Mumbai Murder: Two brothers shot dead in Ulhasnagar over extortion dispute; minor among victims | Thane News

ULHASNAGAR: Panic gripped Ulhasnagar’s Camp No. 5 area on Thursday evening after assailants allegedly opened indiscriminate fire at Kailash Colony Chowk, killing two brothers, including a minor, and critically injuring their uncle in what police suspect was a fallout of an old rivalry and extortion dispute. The deceased were identified as Anil Harkesh Chauhan, 22, and his younger brother Aman Harkesh Chauhan, 17. Their uncle, Arjun Surajbali Chauhan, 26, sustained serious bullet injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.According to family members, the incident took place around 7.30 pm when around 10 to 12 persons allegedly arrived at the spot in cars and two-wheelers. The family has named Sagar Patil as the prime accused in the firing incident.Eyewitnesses said the attackers opened fire in the middle of the road in full public view, triggering chaos in the busy locality. Residents and shopkeepers ran for safety as multiple rounds were allegedly fired.Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and shifted the victims to Central Hospital. However, Aman Chauhan succumbed to his injuries before he could receive treatment. An eyewitness said Aman, after being shot, managed to approach him and informed him about the firing. “We first rushed him to a private Balaji Hospital, but since there was no surgeon available there, we shifted him in an autorickshaw to Central Hospital. He died on the way,” the eyewitness said.Preliminary investigation suggests the attack stemmed from an old dispute between members of the Chauhan family and a group of criminals, allegedly linked to the Ambernath gaon area.Speaking to TOI, the deceased’s elder brother, Vicky Chauhan, alleged that the accused were demanding money every month from Anil, who worked as a tempo driver. “About a month ago, Sagar Patil, Balvindar Birajdar and Shekhar Birajdar demanded hafta from my brother to allow him to operate his tempo in Ambernath gaon. When he refused, he was threatened,” Vicky claimed. He further alleged that Anil initially lodged a non-cognisable complaint, or NC, at the Hill Line police station, following which the same group allegedly assaulted him. “My brother later registered an FIR against them, but no strict action was taken. The accused got bail and continued threatening him. Had the police acted seriously, my brother would have been alive today,” he alleged.Another relative claimed that several accused involved in the firing were history-sheeters with multiple criminal cases registered against them. They also alleged that the accused enjoyed political backing, which is why no stringent police action was taken against them earlier.Senior police officers, including officials from Hill Line police station, visited the crime scene after the incident. Police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the absconding accused.A senior police officer said investigators were probing the extortion angle. “During the preliminary inquiry, it has come to light that the accused allegedly demanded hafta from the deceased, and the firing occurred after he refused to pay. Further investigation is underway,” the officer said. The double murder has sparked tension in the area and raised serious concerns over law and order in Ulhasnagar.

Shrikant Shinde advised Sena-BJP leaders in Ambernath to work together for city development | Thane News

AMBERNATH: Attempting to end the prolonged political tussle within the ruling alliance in Ambernath, Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde on Wednesday advised leaders and corporators of Shiv Sena and BJP to put aside past differences and work together in the interest of the city. The rivalry between the two alliance partners had intensified after the Ambernath municipal council elections, where Shiv Sena emerged as the single largest party by winning 27 seats independently. However, BJP managed to secure the crucial post of municipal council president, triggering a prolonged power struggle between the two sides. In a bid to form the ruling majority, BJP had garnered support from 12 Congress corporators and four NCP members. Shiv Sena later countered the move by bringing the same four NCP corporators into its camp and claimed the required majority for control over the civic body. The shifting loyalties eventually led BJP to approach the court, resulting in escalating tensions between the two parties.Due to the continued political conflict, several city development works in the municipal council reportedly remained stalled for a long period. Later, following court directions, the Thane collector ruled in favour of the Shiv Sena faction, dealing a setback to BJP’s claim over the majority.Despite the strained relations, efforts towards reconciliation began last week after Shinde reportedly intervened and encouraged leaders from both parties to come together, especially considering that Shiv Sena and BJP are alliance partners in both the state and central governments. However, some Shiv Sena corporators were still believed to be unhappy over the decision to align with BJP. Against this backdrop, Shinde, who visited Ambernath on Wednesday to review ongoing development works, addressed corporators and office-bearers from both parties and urged them to forget past disputes and jointly focus on development of the city.Political observers believe Shinde’s intervention could help ease tensions and improve coordination between the alliance partners in the municipal council in the coming days.

ULHASNAGAR: The city may get 30 electric buses by October this year, providing major relief to commuters travelling between Ulhasnagar and neighbouring areas such as Thane, Ambernath, Badlapur, Murbad, and Navi Mumbai. The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Shiv Sena leader and former MLA Pappu Kalani, other Shiv Sena functionaries, and Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde on Monday, where several long-pending civic and infrastructure issues concerning the city were taken up.Shiv Sena leader Kamlesh Nikam said the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation had submitted a proposal seeking 100 electric buses from the state government, which was later forwarded to the Centre. Out of these, 30 buses are likely to be allotted in the first phase by October. According to Nikam, the buses will operate on routes connecting Ulhasnagar with Murbad, Badlapur, Ambernath, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, significantly improving connectivity for residents, especially people from middle-class and economically weaker sections.During the meeting, Sena leaders also discussed multiple development projects planned for the city. Nikam said deputy CM Shinde sanctioned fund of Rs 100 crore for concrete roads in city roads through Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) fund. Tender processes for these projects are expected to begin shortly.Issues related to redevelopment and regularisation in Ulhasnagar were also raised during the meeting. Kalani demanded the appointment of key officials in the UMC, including an Additional Town Planner and deputy municipal commissioner, to speed up pending projects and administrative work. Shinde reportedly directed officials to fill the required posts at the earliest. The meeting also focused on the city’s water supply concerns. Pappu Kalani sought the development of an independent water source for Ulhasnagar so that the civic body can reduce its dependence on expensive water purchased from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation.

After public pressure, cleanliness crusader gets KDMC job back | Thane News

KALYAN: In a rare move, following sustained public pressure and political intervention, the state govt has reappointed Ramdas Kokare as deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management) in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation. The move comes days after Kokare’s sudden transfer triggered outrage among residents and civic activists.Kokare, known across Maharashtra for his innovative waste management and cleanliness models, had been abruptly transferred last month after serving barely nine months at the KDMC. However, his next posting was not finalised. The move sparked a strong public reaction, with residents launching campaigns demanding his return, citing his role in significantly improving solid waste management and cleanliness standards in the twin city. Sources said KDMC commissioner Abhinav Goel had also urged the state govt to bring Kokare back, considering his work and public support. It is learnt that Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde also played an important role in pushing for his reinstatement, making the govt revoke the transfer on Monday.Kokare was first brought to KDMC in 2020 with a mandate to overhaul the civic body’s poor sanitation and waste management system, which was long criticised for rampant garbage dumping and lack of segregation.During his first tenure, he played a key role in shutting the Adharwadi dumping ground and aggressively promoting waste segregation across the city. However, after his transfer at the end of that tenure, waste management conditions reportedly deteriorated again. Sources said this was one of the key reasons why MP Shrikant Shinde had earlier demanded Kokare’s return to KDMC for a second stint. After rejoining KDMC, Kokare once again focused on waste segregation and scientific waste processing. Under his leadership, segregation levels, which had reportedly dropped to just 3%, rose to nearly 70%, among the highest in the MMR. He also pushed biomining initiatives at the Adharwadi dumping ground and encouraged recycling and revenue generation through waste processing projects.

Teen girl robbed of phone, raped at railway yard near Mumbai; CCTV trail helps GRP nab accused

KALYAN: A 21-year-old jobless man has been arrested for allegedly coercing a 14 year-old girl into accompanying him to the secluded and dimly lit Kalyan railway yard and raping her.GRP officials said the girl, a resident of Ahilyanagar, arrived at Kalyan on Saturday and was waiting at a platform around 5pm to catch a train to Khopoli, where her uncle resides. In her complaint, she said the accused, Saurabh Sonawane, befriended her and mid-conversation, snatched her phone. When she pleaded for it, he allegedly intimidated her and said she must accompany him to the Kalyan GRP station to retrieve it. However, he instead took her to the yard, where he allegedly assaulted her.Kalyan Government Railway Police (GRP), in a joint operation with Railway Crime Branch, tracked down and arrested Sonawane within hours of the crime after scanning CCTV footage of the platforms and yard area and identifying him.The GRP have booked Sonawane under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
