NEW DELHI: The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has put in place a formal ombudsman mechanism for grievance redressal to strengthen consumer protection.Under the new rules, consumers will now have the option to escalate unresolved complaints beyond the company level to an independent authority designated as the ombudsman. The provision comes into play after a defined escalation process within the company, including review by a nodal officer and an appellate authority.The mechanism has been notified under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2025, which were issued on Monday. The notification lays down the rights and duties of oil and gas consumers, gas distribution companies, LPG distributors, retail petroleum outlets and oil marketing companies.The move is aimed at addressing a long-standing gap in the sector, where grievance redressal largely remained confined to internal company systems, with limited external oversight. By introducing an ombudsman, the regulator has created an additional layer of accountability for entities engaged in the supply and distribution of petroleum products and natural gas.The notification provides that the ombudsman will be appointed by PNGRB and will be responsible for the expeditious resolution of consumer complaints, as well as other functions assigned by the board. It also lays down the framework for resolution, including provisions for settlement through facilitation or mediation between the parties. Consumers can approach the ombudsman if their complaints remain unresolved within stipulated timelines or if they are dissatisfied with the decision of the company’s appellate authority.The rules also clarify that this mechanism is in addition to, and does not take away, the right of consumers to seek remedies under the Consumer Protection Act.

US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Monday said the central bank can look through the energy price shock triggered by the Middle East conflict, but warned it may need to act if rising costs begin to alter inflation expectations, AFP reported.“The tendency is to look through any kind of a supply shock,” Powell said at an event at Harvard University, noting that energy shocks have historically been short-lived.This is because “energy shocks have tended to come and go pretty quickly” while changes in monetary policy take longer to transmit through the economy, he said.The remarks come amid escalating tensions following US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which led to retaliation from Tehran and disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz — a key route for global energy supplies.With nearly one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas passing through the strait in normal conditions, the conflict has pushed up global oil prices and driven a surge in US gasoline costs, raising concerns over inflation.For now, Powell said, “we feel like our policy is in a good place for us to wait and see how that turns out.”He added that “inflation expectations do appear to be well-anchored beyond the short term,” but acknowledged that supply shocks could risk shifting expectations if price pressures persist.The Fed is currently navigating what Powell described as a “tension” between its dual mandate of maintaining price stability and supporting employment, with risks of both higher inflation and a weakening labour market.On financial stability, Powell said the US system has “significantly hardened” since the 2008 global financial crisis, though regulators must continue to ensure resilience without attempting to “regulate risk out of existence.”He added that policymakers are closely watching emerging areas such as private credit.With his term set to expire in May, Powell also underscored the importance of the Fed’s independence, saying the central bank “needs to be fully politically independent” and that its chair should be “a person who can be reappointed by either side.”

Mumbai: Western Railway has directed AH Wheeler to stop sales and vacate 55 multi-purpose stalls (MPS) across its Mumbai Central division, with the 72-hour notice period ending on March 31 after the letter was served on March 28, officials said.The move marks the end of a long chapter for AH Wheeler, one of the most recognisable names at Indian railway stations. It was founded in 1877 at Allahabad station, now Prayagraj. The company has been asked to hand over vacant possession of all stalls along with railway-owned fixtures and fittings in good condition.The 55 stalls, spread across key stations in the Mumbai division, are currently operating as multi-purpose stalls (MPS). These units were converted from the company’s traditional railway book stalls on April 1, 2021, under a five-year agreement that expires on March 31, 2026.The latest communication issued by the office of the divisional railway manager (commercial), Mumbai Central, states that all sale activity must stop immediately after the contract period ends.The railway has invoked the contract clause requiring the licensee to vacate the premises within 72 hours of expiry and return the stalls in proper condition.Officials said the company has also been instructed to clear all pending dues, including licence fees, electricity charges, fines and penalties, before handing over possession. Station managers and commercial inspectors across the division have been told to ensure compliance and submit no-dues certificates after taking over the spaces.Fresh tenders for these stalls have already been floated, indicating Western Railway’s plan to continue commercial use of the spaces after the present contract expires.The company started when French businessman Emile Edward Moreau and TK Banerjee started selling books to passengers waiting for trains. Named after Moreau’s English friend Arthur Henry Wheeler, the brand grew from a small wooden platform cabinet into a nationwide chain of railway book stalls. Over the decades, it became closely associated with train journeys across India and also helped popularise the early writings of Rudyard Kipling, making it a historic part of railway travel culture.

The Indian rupee depreciated 9.88 per cent against the US dollar in FY26, marking its steepest annual decline in 14 years, according to market data as reported PTI.The last comparable fall was in FY12, when the domestic currency had dropped 12.4 per cent amid a widening current account deficit of 4.2 per cent.The sharp depreciation in FY26 was driven by persistent foreign fund outflows, elevated crude oil prices and a strengthening US dollar. Volatility in global financial markets and tightening liquidity conditions further added to the pressure on the currency.Other Asian currencies also weakened against the dollar during the period, with the Japanese yen declining 6 per cent, the Philippine peso falling 5.74 per cent, and the South Korean won slipping 2.88 per cent since April 1, according to market participants.Sunal Sodhani, head of treasury at Shinhan Bank India, described FY26 as a “perfect storm” of external shocks, capital outflows and structural vulnerabilities, noting that the drivers of the current depreciation differ from those seen in FY12.“Unlike FY12 (which was more domestic plus taper tantrum-led), FY26 depreciation is externally driven by oil, geopolitics, capital flight, and amplified by India’s import dependence,” PTI quoted Sodhani as saying.The initial weakness in the rupee was triggered after the US imposed tariffs on India, which led to a surge in demand for the dollar. The situation worsened with the escalation of the West Asia conflict, pushing crude oil prices higher and intensifying pressure on the domestic currency.The tariffs also weighed on equity and debt markets, resulting in sustained foreign capital outflows. The rupee has since touched successive record lows, breaching the psychological mark of 95 against the US dollar, despite interventions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).To support the currency, the RBI has sold $55.073 billion in the spot market till January in FY26.The central bank has also introduced regulatory measures to curb excessive speculation. On Friday, the RBI said banks can hold only up to $100 million in net open positions in the onshore currency market at the end of each trading day, effective April 10.The move briefly supported the rupee in early trade on Monday, though gains were later erased due to strong dollar demand from oil companies and corporates, traders said.The currency witnessed high volatility during the session, swinging 165 paise intra-day as the West Asia crisis entered its 31st day. It eventually closed 7 paise higher at 94.78 against the dollar after touching an intra-day low beyond 95.“Rupee rose, but again fell due to some big corporate buying, squaring up of position in NDF, Nationalised banks buying and oil companies buying,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.Market participants expect the rupee to remain volatile going ahead.“Outlook depends on three variables: oil, flows, and global rates. The new normal is higher volatility plus gradual depreciation, not stability around a fixed band. In FY27, for the USD/INR pair, 92-97 remains the broader range play,” Sodhani added.

New Delhi: All India Football Federation (AIFF) Executive Committee member and chairperson of the Women’s Football Committee Valanka Alemao Churchill has alleged that she was ‘targeted’, heckled’ and ‘harassed’ by the governing body’s top brass for raising concerns over procedural irregularities. In a statement, the AIFF has denied these claims.The alleged incident took place during AIFF’s Executive Committee meeting in New Delhi on March 29.

In her letter to fellow Executive Committee members, Alemao has criticised AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President NA Harris and Deputy General Secretary M Satyanarayan.“I wish to place on record the entirely disgusting behaviour of the AIFF President Mr Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President Mr N. A. Haris and Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan….I feel deeply prejudiced and I found that several attempts were made by the President to suppress my voice…,” Valanka, the only female member on AIFF’s Executive Committee, wrote in an email.“The President made remarks against me which were unnecessary and disrespectful. He along with the DSG raised his tone time and again beyond an acceptable decibel with the intention to intimidate me…..Throughout the course of the meeting, I was consistently targeted.”In the recent past, Alemao had raised multiple irregularities in Indian football. She questioned the fact that members were not kept in the loop for the commercial rights tender document.“I feel deeply prejudiced and I found that several attempts were made by the President to suppress my voice. However, for the interest of the sport, I believe that it is imperative for me to highlight the incidents to ensure that such actions are not repeated in the subsequent meetings,” she wrote in the email.“As an executive committee member, I have the power and responsibility to enquire about important agreements, provide feedback and voice my dissent on decisions that are unconstitutional and illegal,” she continued.“In the meeting I was informed that I do not have the right to seek details on the operations of the federation,” she said.“I believe that my concerns on the procedural irregularities over the past few months has perturbed few members. And it is deeply concerning to note that during this meeting decisions were taken and approvals were sought without considering the powers of the general body.”Alemao had also slammed the AIFF officials for poor preparations that hurt India women’s team during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Ahead of the tournament earlier this month in Australia, players and coaching staff had received poorly fitting jerseys and became a moment of global embarrassment.AIFF denies claims, says Alemao has vested interestsIn a statement later in the day, AIFF denied these allegations and accused the Churchill Brothers’ CEO Alemao of trying to force her way into the Indian Super League ‘through exceptional means.’“The AIFF categorically rejects the recent claims made by Executive Committee Ms. Valanka Alemao and wishes to place certain facts on record in the interest of transparency and clarity,” it said in a statement.“The AIFF reiterates that all meetings and decisions of the federation are conducted strictly in accordance with its Articles of Association and established procedures.”Churchill Brothers are currently embroiled in a legal mess with the AIFF for not getting promoted last season. The Goan club has also accused AIFF chief Kalyan Chaubey for conflict of interest with Delhi High Court hearing the proceedings.“Following this, several legal petitions were filed by members of Ms. Alemao’s family. Despite being an Executive Committee member of the AIFF, Ms. Alemao repeatedly attempted to influence proceedings during official meetings with the objective of securing the inclusion of her club in the ISL,” AIFF said.

Mumbai: The National Informatics Centre (NIC)-developed e-Sakshya app has helped police put a habitual offender back in jail. The app which helps police record and upload crime scene evidence, including searches and seizures, directly to the cloud, led to a sessions court setting aside a magistrate’s “perverse order” releasing a habitual offender on the grounds of an illegal arrest. While the accused, Arvind Sodha, claimed he could not understand the grounds of arrest as it was communicated in Marathi, the court noted that video recordings of the accused’s statement had been uploaded to the “E-Sakshya App”, which showed his comprehension of the language.“Moreover, the accused is born and brought up in Mumbai. So also, he has studied in a Marathi medium school… and he had Marathi language from fifth to ninth standards. All the facts are sufficient to hold that the magistrate, without making any inquiry, released the hardened criminal, and the order of release is perverse and the same is required to be set aside for giving an opportunity to the investigation officer to investigate the matter,” additional sessions judge Mujibodeen S Shaikh said recently. The sessions judge said the magistrate blindly believed the statement of a habitual criminal against whom 14 cases including those for murder, attempt to murder and under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) have been registered. Sodha was arrested in an extortion, criminal intimidation and house trespass case filed at Mankhurd police station. The magistrate’s court granted his release on Feb 4. Seeking cancellation of his release, the state argued the magistrate ignored the accused’s educational background and digital evidence proving his linguistic proficiency.The judge directed Sodha to surrender before the investigating officer for probe and remand. “If the respondent (Sodha) will not surrender himself before the IO within two weeks, then the IO may arrest the accused and produce him before the magistrate after mandatory compliance of the legal provision,” the judge said. The state challenged the earlier decision, arguing the magistrate failed to conduct a proper inquiry into whether the accused truly misunderstood the Marathi language or was simply using it as a tactic to avoid custody. The dispute centred on the mandatory communication of the grounds of arrest under BNSS. The prosecution presented records showing Sodha was born and raised in Mumbai and attended Swami Vivekanand Vidyalay, where Marathi was a compulsory subject from the fifth to ninth grades. The sessions judge observed the lower court had acted prematurely by accepting the accused’s statement at face value. “If the magistrate would have been given the opportunity to the IO then he would have produced the recording of the statement of accused which is uploaded on e-Sakshya App.“In 2024, Sodha was also booked in the murder case of MCOCA accused Chirag Loke. Loke was fatally attacked with iron rods in Nerul by four me on Feb 13, 2024.

He was issued a show-cause notice on March 27, shortly after Pakistan Punjab’s chief minister Maryam Nawaz attended the opening match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.Maryam Nawaz had been invited as chief guest and was introduced to officials of the eight franchises and players before the match between Lahore Qalandars and Hyderabad Kingsmen.Shah later posted on X, “Why is she treated like the queen at Lord’s?” in reference to her presence at the venue. He deleted the post soon after and claimed that his account had been hacked.Following the notice from the PCB, Shah issued an unconditional apology and appeared before a three-member disciplinary committee in Lahore on Monday.The PCB said that Shah was found “to have breached various clauses of his central contract.”“It was noted that Naseem Shah’s social media adviser has already been terminated by Naseem and shall be blacklisted by the PCB from associating with any player falling under the PCB’s jurisdiction,” the board said.The development comes during a PSL season affected by wider regional issues. As part of the fallout from the conflict in Iran, spectators have not been allowed at matches, and the tournament has been reduced from six venues to two — Lahore and Karachi. Rising fuel prices have led the government to advise limited travel and work-from-home measures.Last year, Pakistan all-rounder Aamer Jamal was fined $4,000 for displaying a slogan in support of former prime minister Imran Khan.Shah is currently playing for Rawalpindi Pindiz and had figures of 0 for 51 in a five-wicket loss to Peshawar Zalmi.The right-arm fast bowler has taken 152 wickets for Pakistan across formats, including 20 Tests, 34 ODIs and 37 T20 internationals.
