The world’s no. 1 battery maker — CATL — has a message for America: You cannot make Electric Vehicles (EVs) without China. Chinese battery giant CATL, formally known as Contemporary Amperex Technology, is the largest EV battery producer in the world. At second position, after CATL, is another Chinese company BYD. As some lawmakers in the US want to block automakers from using Chinese batteries, Chinese companies seem unfazed and are reportedly saying: Good Luck with that, Hahaha.The general conclusion in the Chinese battery industry, led by CATL, is that the US auto market is going to suffer and lag others due to these protectionist efforts. Robin Zeng, founder of CATL and China’s fourth richest person, strongly believes that the US market is doomed without his company. As around a third of the world’s new EVs had CATL batteries in 2025. Also, BYD, the world’s no. 1 EV car company produces its own batteries.

America’s ‘problem with Chinese batteries

According to a recent report in Wall Street Journal (WSJ), critics of China argue that embedding a Chinese battery maker in the US supply chain would make the country even more vulnerable to Beijing’s economic coercion and undercut the chances of American battery companies catching up. In 2025, America placed the battery maker CATL on a Pentagon list of companies working with China’s military. On its part, CATL calls this designation “erroneous”.While the designation does not involve immediate bans on the Chinese companies added to this list, it is seen as a blow to the reputations of affected companies and represents a stark warning to US entities and firms about the risks of conducting business with them.

What makes CATL dominate EV battery market worldwide

CATL has grown to become the world’s largest electric-vehicle battery manufacturer thanks to its technology and low costs. It posted record profit of more than $10 billion last year, and an estimated one in three EVs sold around the world carries its batteries. The EV market in the U.S. will remain small “for several years. But after that, it’ll have to be booming, because it is the trend. It is the future,” said ZengAlso, CATL’s dominance in the world EV market so far is largely without sales in the US and Europe, where electric adoption lags behind that in China. Also, like the US in Europe too, CATL’s presence is limited. One of America’s largest auto companies, Ford reportedly recently ditched South Korea’s SK Group as its joint-venture partner for battery projects, focusing instead on its plan to build CATL-designed batteries at a $3 billion factory in Michigan. As per WSJ report, Ford is paying to license the Chinese company’s intellectual property, a workaround that the US allows while it puts up legal and political barriers to prevent CATL from building its own plants.Similarly, General Motors (GM) is reportedly set to import China-made batteries from CATL and put them in its new Chevrolet Bolt. This after swallowing a 60% tariff due to the company’s Chinese origin. GM is selling the Bolt for only one model year while it makes longer-term plans. The report said that GM is paying a hefty tariff to get CATL batteries at a time when two US battery plants GM spent billions of dollars to build are lying idle. The reason is reportedly their inability to make cheaper batteries that the automaker needs for the $30,000 vehicle.Not just this, America’s largest electric car maker Tesla too is using CATL technology for a battery plant in Nevada producing energy-storage systems, a business that is growing strongly while Tesla’s core EV business has stalled.

CATL CEO Robin Zeng is China’s national hero

In China, Zeng is a national tech hero. In 2025, he was invited to meet Chinese PM Xi Jinping. In March 2026, he was invited to Beijing to attend China’s biggest annual political event as an advisory body member. “We will sell our Chinese products globally and at the same time, we will promote our technology and standards worldwide,” he is said to have told reporters at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Talking of America, Zeng said, “US people all go to chips, software, AI” because “they get a lot of money,” he said. Batteries are considered “a very stupid industry in the US.”

According to sources, the videos were recorded on the evening of March 27 and shared with family members and friends. The devices had been carefully packed in milk packets and hidden in the pipeline.Prison officials identified the undertrial prisoners as Darshan and his younger brother Abhi, both accused in a murder case reported in Hennur Bande around two-and-a-half years ago. The voice heard in the clips is that of another inmate, Zypsin Daniel. Officials said the trio are associated with the Sunkadkatte Rakshit gang.

Barrack shift triggered backlash

According to Alok Kumar, preliminary findings indicate that the videos were recorded after the prison administration initiated a new system of shifting inmates to different barracks based on the alphabetical order of their names. The move aims to break communication links among inmates and prevent coordinated criminal activities.Darshan had been shifted to a quarantine barrack on the evening of March 27 as part of this system. Officials said the video was recorded just minutes before his relocation.Investigators believe the clips were deliberately leaked to the media to derail the reform process, tarnish the image of the prison administration, and demoralise senior officials of the Prison and Correctional Services Department.A complaint was filed at the Parappana Agrahara Police Station on March 28 against the accused inmates. Simultaneously, disciplinary action has been initiated against prison staff for lapses in duty.

Three warders suspended

Warders Niranjan Kamat, Hanumantappa Hadpad, and Shivanand Karlabatti have been suspended for dereliction of duty during the night of March 27 and the morning of March 28, when the mobile phones were allegedly used to record the videos. Action is also being initiated against the jailer who was on supervisory duty at the time, officials said.In a concerning development, authorities also detected active Airtel network signals in certain parts of the prison, raising serious questions about communication loopholes. Officials have issued a warning to the telecom provider to take corrective measures and prevent misuse.Despite the incident, prison authorities asserted that reform measures will continue. “Efforts to streamline and improve prison administration will not be deterred by vested interests attempting to disrupt the system,” a senior official said.

Markets remained on edge as Houthis enter the Iran war and US plans to extend onground presence in the region, further fueling uncertainty over the trajectory of the war.Around 7 am IST, Brent Crude stood at $116.4 per barrel, up 3.84 or 3.41%, after gaining over 4% in its previous session on Friday. WTI Crude followed the rally, jumping to $103.1, up 3.44 or 3.45%, after recording a gain of 5.5% last week. So far this month, Brent has climbed 59%, marking its steepest monthly rise and exceeding gains seen during the 1990 Gulf War. The surge comes after Iran tightened its noose on the Strait of Hormuz effectively disrupting the strategically crucial route that sees around one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies pass.The conflict, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, has expanded across the Middle East. Over the weekend, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis carried out their first attacks on Israel since the start of the war, raising further concern over key shipping lanes in the Arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea. The US also stepped up its military footprint in the Middle East, with around 3,500 Marines and sailors aboard the USS Tripoli deployed to the region. The move, described as potentially the largest US buildup there in nearly two decades, was confirmed by US Central Command. It comes after almost a month of conflict involving Iran and is being viewed as part of Washington’s effort to expand its operational options in the region.Meanwhile, according to data from Kpler, cited by Reuters, Saudi crude exports redirected from the Strait of Hormuz to the Yanbu port in the Red Sea reached 4.658 million barrels per day last week.JP Morgan analysts said that if exports from Yanbu were disrupted, Saudi oil flows could be forced to shift towards Egypt’s Suez-Mediterranean (SUMED) pipeline to the Mediterranean.Tensions in the region intensified further over the weekend after attacks damaged Oman’s Salalah terminal, despite ongoing attempts to advance ceasefire discussions.Iran has said it is prepared to respond to a US ground offensive, accusing Washington of planning a land attack while simultaneously pursuing negotiations.Meanwhile, Pakistan’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar said that efforts had been discussed on possible ways to achieve an early and lasting end to the conflict, along with potential US-Iran talks in Islamabad.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field first, and KKR were off to a flying start with Finn Allen and Ajinkya Rahane scoring 78 in the power play. The latter scored 67 and gave KKR a good position to score runs. Allen scored 37 off 17 balls, and Cam Green scored 18 off 10 balls.

KKR fell short of 20 runs

Angkrish Raghuvanshi showed his class and scored 51, and Rinku Singh gave the finishing touch for the Knights, scoring 33 off 21 balls. KKR would have felt they were short of 15-20 runs because at one stage, 240 was the projected score on a very good batting surface.

During the game, Ajinkya Rahane also limped off as Rinku Singh, the team’s vice-captain, took over the captaincy. However, Rinku did not have much to do as Rohit and Rickelton were smashing the KKR bowlers, and the skipper was helpless.

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra revealed that over a thousand auditions were conducted before Sara Arjun was selected. The intention from the outset was to cast someone entirely new, allowing the character to feel authentic without any baggage of previous roles.Speaking about the process, Mukesh Chhabra shared with Moneycontrol, “Humara initially bohot saara discussion iss film mein chala tha, ki humko jis jagah ki woh ladki dikhani hai, koi aisa fresh approach lena bohot zaroori hai (There were extensive discussions initially about how we needed a very fresh approach for the kind of girl the role required). When Sara Arjun auditioned, the response was reportedly immediate. “Jab usne woh scene kiya, immediately I sent it to Aditya on WhatsApp (When she performed the scene, I immediately sent it to Aditya on WhatsApp). He said, ‘Kaun hai yeh?’ (Who is she?) I said she’s the new girl… Initially, we were thinking, ‘Will she look short?’ But then we thought kahani ke saath woh correct lagega (she would fit well with the story)… She gave a kick-ass audition… you’ll know why we took that girl,” he added, highlighting how her performance stood out.

About ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’

Directed by Dhar, this is the second installment of the 2025 spy thriller. The cast also features Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, Rakesh Bedi, Sara Arjun, and Danish Pandor in key roles. Pakistan Cricket Board has doubled down on ensuring the smooth conduct of the Pakistan Super League 2026, but a fresh controversy has emerged involving two senior Lahore Qalandars players. Amid ongoing concerns over a possible two-day lockdown due to a fuel shortage in the country, skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi and all-rounder Sikandar Raza have reportedly breached strict security protocols laid out for the tournament. The duo allegedly allowed four individuals to stay inside Raza’s hotel room for more than two hours, in violation of isolation and safety guidelines. The PSL is currently being conducted under heightened security arrangements, with more than 6,000 police personnel deployed alongside AI-based surveillance systems and drone monitoring. Due to security concerns and regional tensions, the tournament has been limited to two venues — Lahore and Karachi — and is being held behind closed doors without spectators. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had earlier stressed the importance of hosting the league despite the situation. “We don’t know how long the current situation will persist, but hosting the PSL is essential. It is an international brand, and foreign players are involved. Everyone is eager for the PSL to go ahead,” he said. Following the reported breach, Lahore’s Deputy Inspector General of Police Faisal Kamran has formally notified the PCB and PSL authorities through an official letter. The matter is now expected to be investigated, with disciplinary action likely. At the very least, a fine could be imposed, while a match ban remains a possibility. Concerns have also been raised that failure to act could set a poor precedent for other players. The letter further claims that the team’s liaison officer had initially sought permission from the PCB to allow the four visitors into the hotel room, but the request was denied. A similar request from franchise owner Sameen Rana was also rejected. Despite this, Raza allegedly went ahead and allowed the visitors, even after security personnel advised against it. Confirming awareness of the situation, Qalandars’ head of media Umar Farooq said, “We are aware of an incident involving two Lahore Qalandars players, and are in communication with the PSL over the matter.” With the tournament already being conducted under strict security measures, the incident has raised fresh questions around discipline and adherence to protocols within team environments.
