Middle East crisis: Oil slides, gold & silver rise on US move to end conflict

MUMBAI: The US move to send a 15-point proposal to Iran aiming at ending the war in West Asia, combined with a slowdown in hostilities between the warring nations on Wednesday sent oil prices sliding and precious metals rallying. In late trades on Wednesday, Brent was trading at $97.2/barrel, down 3% on the day. In the second week of March, Brent had rallied to a multi-year high at close to the $120 mark. Incidentally, during the day, Larry Fink, CEO, BlackRocksaid that if oil prices rise to $150 level, due to supply disruptions in the Gulf region even after the war ends, that could result in a global recession. The war has all but halted shipments of oil and liquefied natural gas through the Strait of Hormuz, which typically carries about one-fifth of the world’s gas and crude supply, causing what the International Energy Agency has called the biggest-ever oil supply disruption, a Reuters report said.In the domestic market, in late trades on MCX, crude oil futures for April delivery was down 3% at Rs 8,475/barrel.Precious metals also saw an uptick as an end or a ceasefire would diminish the fears of energy supply-led disruptions leading to inflation and possibility of rate hikes. In mid-session in the US, gold was trading 3.4% up at $4,551/ounce (Oz) while silver was up 4.7% at $72.8/Oz. In the domestic market, in late trades on MCX, gold futures for April delivery was trading 3.8% up at Rs 1.44 lakh/10gm while silver futures for May delivery was up 4.7% at Rs 2.34 lakh/kg.

Cyclist killed as car ‘driven by 17-yr-old boy’ hits him in Kalyan | Mumbai News

Kalyan: A 42-year-old businessman cycling on an incomplete stretch of Kalyan’s Ring Road was killed after a speeding car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old boy hit him, briefly flinging him in the air, on Tuesday night. The boy fled from the spot, went into hiding and was apprehended the next evening. An FIR has been lodged for rash and negligent driving, along with non-bailable charges. Senior police inspector Amarnath Waghmode said his mother, who owns the vehicle, has also been named as an accused. The boy told police he had informed her before taking the car out. The boy’s father is a lawyer. Police sources said the boy posted on social media soon after the hit-and-run that he had had a “small accident” and feared being scolded by his father. The post was later deleted. The brother of the victim, Srinivas Tandle, said he had picked up cycling that very day in the hopes of getting fitter. Locals said many motorists speed and perform stunts on the stretch, which has led to accidents, including one less than a month ago. Police said Tandle, the owner of multiple garments stores in Kalyan, had borrowed a bicycle from a friend two days before the accident. CCTV footage showed that while he was cycling on the road around 8pm on Tuesday, a car being driven at high speed swerved, crashed into him and sped away. Locals alerted Khadakpada police, who rushed Tandle to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police tracked down the car and found it in a parking lot of the building in which the 17-year-old’s family lives. The vehicle had minor damage. Tandle’s brother, Ganesh, said the CCTV footage showed that the car driver was driving recklessly before hitting him. While demanding strict action, a family friend, Vimal Thakkar, urged Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation to expedite the pending Ring Road work and enhance safety measures to prevent more accidents. Outraged locals, especially walkers and cyclists who use the stretch daily, echoed him and sought installation of additional speed breakers, CCTV cameras and police barricades to improve safety. On Feb 21, a 50-year-old man sustained serious injuries after a car hit him on the same stretch. Police took action against three persons and got their driving licences cancelled. The Ring Road project is being developed in multiple phases by MMRDA. Work on the stretch between Barave and near Vadavali bridge has been stalled for the past two years owing to land acquisition issues. As a result, a significant portion of the road remains partially closed and is frequently used by residents for walking and cycling.

The US proposal reportedly includes a temporary pause in fighting while both sides negotiate a longer-term settlement. Key points include:

Its military leadership has ruled out talks, especially after repeated attacks during earlier negotiation phases.“Has the level of your inner struggle reached the stage of you negotiating with yourself?” Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaqari had said on Tuesday. “People like us can never get along with people like you; no one like us will make a deal with you. Not now. Not ever.”While Iran’s IRGC has made it clear that it does not want to negotiate with the US, the country has still laid down certain conditions for peace.President Masoud Pezeshkian had said, “The only way to end this war was recognising Iran’s legitimate rights, payment of reparations, and firm international guarantees against future aggression.”Iran is reportedly also seeking the lifting of sanctions, closure of US military bases in the region and a new mechanism to control transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Prithvi Shaw declares his mission to return to team India begins from IPL 2026

Prithvi Shaw is determined to make a comeback in Team India. Ahead of the IPL 2026, the top order batter revealed how much effort he put in to make it possible. In the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League, he will feature for the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Delhi Capitals again showed their trust in the batter, whose career went down because of a lack of consistency and multiple controversies. Still, he is considered one of the biggest talents in the country. Like multiple cricket fans, DC too has faith in him.

Prithvi Shaw reveals how he has been putting in efforts to make a comeback

Prithvi Shaw, while talking to the media on Wednesday, Match 25, claimed that he has been working hard on the ground during the practice seasons. According to him, he is putting more than 100 percent into regaining his status in the cricket field.

“There’s no doubt that I have to come back to the Indian team. That’s exactly why I’m playing and why I’m working so hard. The amount of effort I used to put in, I put in three times more today. I don’t usually like to talk about it, but I feel I’m giving not just 100%, but 200% to make that comeback”, Shaw told the media.

Shaw can’t think of offering less than 100 percent on the field

On every occasion, whether it is a practice match or a practice day, the 26-year-old batter aims to give 200 percent on the ground.

“Whether it’s winning a trophy, a match day, or even a practice day—I try to give 200%. If I’m not feeling good, I won’t practice. You don’t get anything by practising at 50%. If you’re on the ground, you give your 100%, or you don’t come to the ground at all”, he added.

As he grew older and more mature, Shaw himself mentioned the things he should not have done in the past. He stated that to understand things, it is better to use one’s own thinking process.

You don’t need seniors or mentors: Prithvi Shaw

“Whatever ups and downs happened, I faced them with respect and a smile. As you grow up, you realise your own mistakes. You don’t need seniors or mentors to tell you what you already know. It’s better if you understand those things yourself beforehand and then move forward,” Prithvi Shaw said.

The Maharashtra-born, who went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, witnessed his former IPL team, Delhi Capitals, putting the paddle up in the IPL 2026 mini auction. DC secured his service at a base price of INR 75 lakh. Shaw played seven IPL seasons for DC to score 1892 runs at an average of 23.94.

Ahead of the IPL 2026, the batter looked rejuvenated with the Maharashtra cricket team in the domestic matches. In the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, the opener caught the headlines with an impactful 141-ball double-century.

His output also dropped by his standards, with just a handful of league goals this season.Liverpool, meanwhile, are struggling with injuries, lack of squad depth, and inconsistency, leaving them facing a major rebuild.
