MUMBAI: Five days after announcing the election results of hawker representatives who would be a part of the eight Town Vending Committees (TVCs) across the city, the BMC has initiated the process of appointing govt and non-govt members on it.Officials said each TVC will comprise 20 members. On the govt side, representatives will be drawn from the police, traffic department and planning authorities, such as Mhada and MMRDA. For non-govt representation, the civic body will soon issue a public advertisement inviting applications from interested stakeholders. These could be citizen representatives or members of NGOs. The BMC chief was briefed on the progress of the process on Thursday. A BMC official said, “We had a review meeting on the future course of action. Once all the names are finalised on the TVC, the same will be notified by the govt.”
There is one TVC and seven others across the civic body’s seven zones. Even as the process of finalising the TVC moves ahead, the civic body has continued its crackdown on unauthorised hawkers. Over the two days on April 2 and 3, Lalbaug’s Mirchi Galli – a spice souk – saw back-to-back civic action. Shops here had for years encroached area nearly 10-15 feet ahead of the shops into public walking space, effectively swallowing up pedestrian walking space. Dayashankar Singh, president of the Azad Hawkers Union, said it’s best if the hawkers are regularised. “The BMC has resorted to blanket evictions. The recent drives in areas such as Mulund, Chembur, Dadar and Crawford Market (Dawa Bazaar), had many vendors being removed without prior verification of their status,” said Singh. Deputy municipal commissioner (special) Vinayak Vispute said formation of TVC is being done following the due process.

NASHIK: Nine members of a family, including six children, died in an incident late Friday night after their vehicle plunged into a well in Dindori, around 25 km from Nashik.The accident took place at about 10 pm in the Shivaji Nagar area. The victims, who were residents of Indore village in Dindori, were returning home in a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) after attending a coaching class get-together in the town.According to police reports, the driver of the MPV apparently failed to spot the well in the darkness while driving through the Shivaji Nagar area. The vehicle veered off the path and fell directly into the deep well, trapping all occupants inside.Police inspector Bhagwan Mathure of the Dindori Police Station stated that as soon as they were alerted, a rescue team rushed to the spot.“We deployed two hydra cranes and sought the assistance of local swimmers to reach the submerged vehicle. Despite the swift rescue efforts, none of the occupants survived,” PI Mathure said.The rescue operation lasted over two hours. The MPV and the bodies of the victims were eventually pulled out of the well by 12.15 am on Saturday. The bodies were immediately shifted to the govt hospital in Dindori. The deceased have been identified as Sunil Dattu Dargude (32), Reshma Sunil Dargude (27), Asha Anil Dargude (32), Khushi Anil Dargude (14), Madhuri Anil Dargude (13), Shreyas Anil Dargude (11), Rakhi (Gunvanti) Sunil Dargude (11), Shravani Anil Dargude (11), and Samruddhi Rajendra Dargude (7).
MUMBAI: The city’s century-old underground stormwater arch drains are undergoing an upgrade, with the BMC’s ongoing project using geopolymer lining trenchless technology — a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country. The work will cover 27 critical stretches of drains spanning 14.3 km in the island city, along with five years of maintenance. Civic officials said the intervention is expected to extend the lifespan of these British-era drains by at least 50 years while improving their discharge capacity during heavy rainfall.Mumbai currently has a 495-km-long network of underground stormwater arch drains in the island city. While routine desilting is carried out by the operations and maintenance wing of the storm water drains (SWD) department, recent CCTV surveys have flagged structural concerns in several sections. Officials found multiple defects, such as cracks, brick displacement, loss of mortar, and even partial collapses in parts of the ageing network.

A total of 56 drain components, measuring 23.5 km, were identified as being in a damaged condition. Of these, 27 components — covering 14.3km — were categorised as critical and in need of immediate rehabilitation to prevent potential collapse.To address the issue, the SWD department consulted experts from IIT Bombay and VJTI. Based on their recommendations, a technical advisory committee concluded that geopolymer lining using trenchless technology was the most suitable solution among the available options.“The technology allows internal strengthening of the drains without extensive excavation, making it less disruptive and faster to implement,” a civic official said. “Once completed, it will not only reinforce structural stability but also improve flow velocity, ensuring quicker disposal of rainwater during intense downpours.”The move comes against the backdrop of increasingly erratic and intense monsoon patterns in Mumbai, where instances of nearly 1,000mm of rainfall over a few days have been recorded in recent years, often leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas.Officials said the geopolymer lining method is environmentally friendly and widely used in countries such as the US, though this marks its first large-scale deployment in India. The project is currently underway in the city area, with civic engineers monitoring progress at key outfalls and stretches. Once completed, BMC plans to assess further phases to cover additional vulnerable sections of the drainage network.

NEW DELHI: A day after the Aam Aadmi Party removed Raghav Chadha as its Rajya Sabha deputy leader, the MP launched a pointed attack on the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, asserting that his silence in Parliament should not be mistaken for defeat.Once seen as a Kejriwal loyalist, Chadha, without directly naming individuals, raised questions over the party’s high command, especially after AAP requested the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to not allot him speaking time in the House.Taking to social media, Chadha shared a video clip shot against the backdrop of the old Parliament building, titled “Silenced, not defeated,” which he described as his “message to aam aadmi.”
He said in the video, “Whenever I get a chance to speak in the Parliament, I raise public issues. And perhaps I raise topics that are not usually raised in the Parliament. But is raising public issues a crime? Have I committed a crime? Have I made a mistake? Have I done something wrong?”“AAP has told the Rajya Sabha Secretariat that Raghav Chadha should be stopped from speaking in the Parliament.
