Cloudflare is down again, temporarily impacting hundreds of websites, including Canva, Zoom and Claude, among various others, unreachable on Friday (December 5). Cloudflare CTO Dane Knecht confirmed the technical problems, saying that the company is working on a fix and the websites should soon be coming back online. He also shared the “root cause” of what led to the worldwide outage. The internet infrastructure provider deployed corrective measures.

Root Cause: Disabling logging features

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Knecht said, “We are aware of the issue impacting the availability of Cloudflare’s network. It was not an attack; root cause was disabling some logging to help mitigate this week’s React CVE.”“Will share full details in a blog post today. Sites should be back online now, but I understand the frustration this causes and the work being,” he added.He previously posted that the company is “closely tracking the React RSC vulnerability.” If you deploy on Cloudflare Workers, you are protected. The Workers security model prevents this exploit at the runtime layer. Meanwhile, the company posted on its status page that a fix has been resolved, the services are back online, and the team is monitoring the situation.“Cloudflare services are currently operating normally. We are no longer observing elevated errors or latency across the network. Our engineering teams continue to closely monitor the platform and perform a deeper investigation into the earlier disruption, but no configuration changes are being made at this time,” the company said (at the time of writing).“At this point, it is considered safe to re-enable any Cloudflare services that were temporarily disabled during the incident. We will provide a final update once our investigation is complete,” the company added.

Second Cloudflare outage in a month

This is the second such outage in a month’s time. Previously, on November 18, Cloudflare went down for hours, impacting major websites worldwide. At that time, the CTO said, “A latent bug in a service underpinning our bot mitigation capability started to crash after a routine configuration change we made. That cascaded into a broad degradation to our network and other services. This was not an attack.”Knecht stressed that the extent of the issue and the time required for resolution were “unacceptable.”

While the chaos has been caused by the IndiGo itself, the flyers cited lax management mechanism on the part of the airlines. “Flight radar was more credible source to find the flight status than the website itself,” said a flyer from Delhi, who faced a 7-8 hours delay for Bengaluru flight.Describing the 5am chaos, he said that “every departure gate was crowded with angry passengers who had been waiting from 6 to 8 hours.” There’s no option to cancel as the ticket fares are 3-4 times, so people just prefer to wait.,” he said.Another flyer from Ranchi noted ill management of takeoffs and landings saying, “Passengers had to wait for two hours inside the flight at Delhi airport as the bay area not empty.” “As tempers flared and some travellers began confronting the crew, the pilot said, ‘We are just as helpless as you are,” he said. “I can park the aircraft and offload only when we receive permission’,” the flyer recalled.“Indigo @IndiGo6E ‘s website has no mention whatever of the chaos, and still allows you to book, even for tomorrow between Bengaluru and Hyderabad (which I picked as two of the worst-hit airports). The US State Dept announced recently that all H-1B workers and their H-4 dependents will have to undergo social-media screening from December 15. Applicants will have to switch their social-media accounts to “Public” settings to enable scrutiny. The requirement is part of broader vetting procedures introduced by the US State Department in recent years. As part of the updated rules, applicants must list IDs used on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and others—even if the accounts are no longer active from the last five years.The US State Department reiterated that “every visa adjudication is a national security decision” and stressed that a US visa is “a privilege, not a right”. Internal guidance circulated in June for student visas suggests the parameters officers may rely on. Negative inferences can be drawn if applicants keep portions of their accounts private or have no online presence at all. Officers are also expected to evaluate whether any content reflects hostility toward US citizens, institutions or culture; support for designated terror groups; attempts to access or misuse sensitive US technology; or a pattern of political activism that could continue after entering the US. Derogatory or questionable material can lead to follow-up interviews, prolonged background checks or visa refusal.

As of December 15, the Department will expand the requirement that an online presence review be conducted for all H-1B applicants and their dependents, in addition to the students and exchange visitors already subject to this review. To facilitate this vetting, all applicants for H-1B and their dependents (H-4), F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas are instructed to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to “public.”The State Department uses all available information in visa screening and vetting to identify visa applicants who are inadmissible to the United States, including those who pose a threat to U.S. national security or public safety. The United States must be vigilant during the visa issuance process to ensure that those applying for admission into the United States do not intend to harm Americans and our national interests, and that all applicants credibly establish their eligibility for the visa sought, including that they intend to engage in activities consistent with the terms for their admission.
