'Sacred institution should not be linked': Kiren Rijiju defends Dalai Lama amid alleged Epstein connection

NEW DELHI: Union minority affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday cautioned against linking the Dalai Lama with the recently released Epstein files. He said that the revered spiritual institution should not be dragged into unrelated controversies to malign its sanctity. In a post on X, Rijiju said, “The revered institution of ‘The Dalai Lama’ should not be casually linked with the ‘Epstein Files’ or any other issues, with the motive of damaging the sacred institution. We shouldn’t become the casualties of immoral-lifestyle, hookup-culture and unconventional-relationships.”Rijiju’s remarks came amid renewed global debate following the latest release of documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein by the US Justice Department. The release has brought a fresh set of prominent names into public discussion, including political leaders, business figures and public personalities, triggering widespread scrutiny and speculation. His statement followed a clarification issued by the office of the Dalai Lama, which firmly denied any association with Epstein. Responding to reports suggesting that the Tibetan spiritual leader’s name appeared in the files, the Dalai Lama’s office said there was no basis to such claims.“Some recent media reports and social media posts concerning the ‘Epstein files’ are attempting to link His Holiness the Dalai Lama with Jeffrey Epstein. We can unequivocally confirm that His Holiness has never met Jeffrey Epstein or authorised any meeting or interaction with him by anyone on His Holiness’s behalf,” the statement said. The latest tranche of documents, released in late January under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, runs into more than three million pages. It includes over 2,000 videos and around 1,80,000 images, making it the largest and final scheduled disclosure of federal material related to Epstein and his associates. The files have referenced or mentioned several high-profile individuals, including US President Donald Trump, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, billionaire Elon Musk, Britain’s Prince Andrew, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, musician Michael Jackson and actor Kevin Spacey, among others.Legal experts and victim advocates have repeatedly stressed that being named in the documents does not imply criminal wrongdoing. They highlighted that the material includes a wide range of records such as contact lists, correspondence, travel logs and third-party references, many of which do not establish any involvement in Epstein’s crimes.Epstein was arrested in 2019 on sex-trafficking charges and later died in custody. The document release is part of efforts by US authorities to address sustained public pressure for transparency. Under the Transparency Act, the Justice Department was required to disclose relevant investigative material, with redactions to protect victims and sensitive information.

Japan snap elections: Takaichi-led LDP projected to storm back to power – top developments

Japan snap elections: Takaichi-led LDP projected to storm back to power - top developments

File photo (Picture credit: AP)

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, is set for a decisive victory in Sunday’s snap lower house elections, according to exit polls and media projections.

LDP projected to secure strong lower house majority

Public broadcaster NHK said the LDP could win between 274 and 328 seats in the 465-member lower house, far above its pre-election tally of 198, reported news agency AFP.Along with coalition partner Japan Innovation Party (JIP), the ruling bloc is projected to secure between 302 and 366 seats.Crossing the 310-seat mark would hand the coalition a two-thirds majority for the first time since 2017, enabling it to pass legislation without opposition backing.

Boost for Takaichi after turbulent years for LDP

The outcome marks a sharp turnaround for the LDP, which had suffered electoral setbacks in recent years due to rising prices and corruption concerns. Under Takaichi’s predecessor, Shigeru Ishiba, the coalition lost its upper house majority last year and its grip on the lower house in 2024.Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister in October, called the snap election after just three months in office to capitalise on her popularity.According to AFP, she has attracted younger voters with her energetic and unconventional style, defying scepticism within her party.

Economy and inflation remain voter concerns

Despite the projected win, voters remain anxious about the economy. Inflation and stagnant wages featured prominently on polling day.“With prices rising like this, what matters most to me is what policies they’ll adopt to deal with inflation,” Tokyo voter Chika Sakamoto said, as quoted by AFP, adding that household incomes were not keeping pace with costs.Takaichi rolled out a $135-billion stimulus package and promised to suspend consumption tax on food, but concerns remain about Japan’s public finances. The country’s debt is more than twice the size of its economy, while bond yields have hit record highs in recent weeks.

China, Taiwan and regional tensions in focus

The election result could also complicate ties with China. Takaichi, seen as a China hawk, recently suggested Japan could intervene militarily if Beijing used force against Taiwan, triggering a strong response from China.Beijing summoned Japan’s ambassador, warned its citizens against travelling to Japan and held joint air drills with Russia. The issue has raised concerns about regional stability, even as US President Donald Trump publicly praised Takaichi as a “strong, powerful, and wise Leader”.

Big mandate could push right-wing agenda

According to news agency AP, a strong majority would allow Takaichi to push ahead with her conservative agenda, including boosting defence spending, revising security policy, lifting restrictions on weapons exports and tightening rules on foreigners.Experts caution that while the win strengthens her position, unresolved questions remain over funding military expansion and managing diplomatic tensions. As per AFP, one analyst said that the best outcome now would be for Takaichi to “take a deep breath” and work on stabilising relations with China before the next electoral test in 2028.

India-US trade deal: How 18% tariff gives Delhi edge over China and others – Piyush Goyal explains

India-US trade deal: How 18% tariff gives Delhi edge over China and others - Piyush Goyal explains

NEW DELHI: Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal has said Indian exporters will enjoy a “competitive advantage” in the US market under the interim trade framework, arguing that an 18 per cent tariff on Indian goods compares favourably with higher duties imposed on others.Speaking after a day after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order reducing tariffs on Indian imports to 18 per cent, Goyal dismissed criticism that New Delhi conceded too much by accepting the rate while offering duty-free access to American goods.

Piyush Goyal Says Agriculture Is Self Reliant Sector As India Refuses Farm Import Benefits To US

Also read: Piyush Goyal hails negotiators behind FTAs after India-US trade dealIn an exclusive interview with PTI, Goyal pointed out that China faces tariffs of 35 per cent, while several other countries are subject to duties of 19 per cent or more, positioning India more favourably in relative terms. The executive order removes a 25 per cent additional duty imposed in August 2025, which had been layered on top of an earlier 25 per cent reciprocal tariff, pushing effective duties on some Indian exports to as high as 50 per cent. The new 18 per cent rate marks a significant rollback and restores India’s standing in the US market after months of strain linked to New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil.Goyal said a short document could not reflect the full scope of the agreement and insisted that adequate safeguards had been built in, particularly for farmers. “I am very excited about the future of India. I can see before my eyes these international engagements, we have concluded nine agreements across the world, in the East and the West, covering different continents and 38 countries. Thirty-seven of them are developed; Mauritius has a largely Indian-origin population and does not compete with us. These 38 countries represent a very large share of global GDP. They are rich economies that largely do not compete with us and are mostly complementary.”He added, “I can see the huge potential that going international will provide for our farmers, fishermen, workers, businesses, investors, and MSMEs, creating many job opportunities. Effectively, we have opened large markets, in addition to India’s own fast-growing large economy, enabling economies of scale. High-quality manufacturing and service delivery can become the hallmark of India. This is the path to Viksit Bharat 2047.Goyal also framed India’s trade negotiations as being conducted from a position of strength. “That’s what is our negotiating strength,” he said, noting that India is currently a $4 trillion economy but is projected to grow to $30–35 trillion by 2047. “And that is the confidence that india has today, that delta of opportunity from 4 trillion to 30-35 trillion, that is the future we offer.”

After tariff cutdown by US, India likely to scale down Russian oil buys

After tariff cutdown by US, India likely to scale down Russian oil buys

India will reportedly reduce its Russian oil imports following the deal with the US, who has agreed to cut trade tariffs in exchange. US President Donald Trump signed an order removing the additional 25 per cent duty on Indian imports after India promised to decrease Russian oil purchases. While refiners haven’t received official orders to stop buying Russian oil, they’ve been informally told to scale back, according to sources quoted by PTI.

‘Reasons For Reducing Russian Oil Imports Are…’ Foreign Expert Explains India-US Trade Framework

Officially, when asked during the MEA briefing last week about India putting a stop on buying Russian oil, spokesperson Rabdhir Jaiwal cited energy security guiding India’s decisions. “The government has stated publicly on several occasions that ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion Indians is the supreme priority of our government. Diversifying our energy sourcing in keeping with objective market conditions and evolving international dynamics is at the core of our strategy to ensure this. All of India’s decisions were taken and will be taken with this in mind,” he said. Most Indian refiners will honor their existing orders but won’t place new ones. Companies like HPCL, MRPL, and HMEL already stopped buying Russian oil after US sanctions last year. IOC and BPCL are planning to wind down their purchases. Reliance Industries, India’s biggest buyer, will likely stop after receiving its final shipment of 150,000 barrels.Nayara Energy stands as an exception. The company faces sanctions from the EU and UK due to its Russian connections, with Rosneft holding a 49.13 per cent stake. This has left Nayara with limited options, forcing it to continue buying Russian oil from non-sanctioned entities.India’s Russian oil imports have been falling since US sanctions hit Rosneft and Lukoil. December 2025 saw imports of 1.2 million barrels per day, down from 2.1 million in May 2023. January saw further decline to 1.1 million barrels. Experts expect this number to drop below 1 million soon.“Russian volumes remain largely locked in for the next 8-10 weeks and continue to be economically critical for India’s complex refining system,” said Sumit Ritolia from Kpler. He expects imports to stay between 1.1-1.3 million barrels daily through early Q2.India, which imports 90% of its oil needs, benefited from discounted Russian oil after Western sanctions following the Ukraine invasion. The new US deal might include increased American oil purchases and potential Venezuelan oil imports.Prashant Vasisht from Icra noted that replacing Russian oil shouldn’t significantly impact India’s import bill, estimating an increase of less than 2%. He suggested Venezuelan crude, being cheaper and suitable for Indian refineries, could be a viable alternative.

Real Madrid, Ramadan and rest: How Mohammed Siraj’s February got a T20 World Cup addition | Cricket News

T20 World Cup: 'God changed my destiny' - Mohammed Siraj on emotions of lucky comeback

TimesofIndia.com in Mumbai: Mohammed Siraj was cooling his heels at home and had his February — a month of no cricket — planned out. First on the list was watching a Real Madrid game on February 15, which would have followed the festivities of Ramadan alongside loved ones. The well-laid plans, however, were interrupted when he got a call from India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav.“Surya bhai called me. He said, ‘Miya bag pack kar le and come’ (pack your bags and come). I said, ‘Surya bhai, mazaak mat karo‘ (don’t joke, because this is not going to happen). He said, I’m telling you the truth—get ready. As soon as he hung up, I got a call from (Pragyan) Ojha. So suddenly, I got shocking news. No one can change what God has written. I came(and) played the match … everything was written,” an emotional Siraj told reporters after India’s T20 World Cup win over USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

T20 World Cup: ‘God changed my destiny’ – Mohammed Siraj on emotions of lucky comeback

As he explained the dramatic last 24 hours, his eyes had a teary sheen. Every word came from the heart and gratitude was written all over them. The sequence of events became difficult to process, and reality struck the bowler when he finally boarded the flight to Mumbai on February 6. In a few hours he was officially joining India’s World Cup squad for a format he had been away from since 2024.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“It was hard. First of all, in the last 24 hours, when I was sitting on the flight, it felt like a dream because I never thought I would play in the World Cup,” said Siraj.“For the past year, the planning was that all the World Cup players would get chances in T20s. But when I didn’t play in T20s, I understood that I wouldn’t be part of it this year,” he added.

When he continued to be the workhorse in Tests and the 50-over format, it seemed the T20I opportunity had passed. Management persisted with Harshit Rana and had their combination ready for the multi-nation event in India and Sri Lanka. Only after Rana’s ill-timed injury did the selectors look for a right-arm quick and make the SOS call to Siraj. There was communication with India’s Strength and Conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux regarding plans for the next few days but little did the two know back then that they would be in the same dugout within 48 hours.

As a player, playing in the World Cup is a different dream. So I just bowled the same line and length that I was bowling in the Ranji Trophy.

Mohammed Siraj

“I was spending time with my family, and one day before, I got a message from Adrian asking about my plans for the next few days. I said, don’t message me right now—I’m resting because I’m playing two four-day games. I need rest, and after that we’ll see the plan,” said Siraj.Jasprit Bumrah’s illness made the selection call even sweeter as Siraj took the field for India in their tournament opener versus USA.Siraj, World Cup and Wankhede is a setting we have seen before and he was back to his usual penetrating best with the new ball when he struck twice in the opening spell. Another wicket was added in the final over—the last of the innings—allowing him to return with figures of 3/29.

From leading Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy a week ago to opening the attack with Arshdeep Singh in a T20 World Cup game, it was a quick transition for the seasoned campaigner. The plans were chalked out late at night, and the experience took over when he stood on top of his mark. Hardik Pandya, fielding at mid-on, egged on the crowd, which roared with “Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Siraj” chants. The dream was now a reality for the 31-year-old.“Earlier I didn’t know I would play. I was just happy to be back in the team. But when I got the message that I was playing, I became more excited. I arrived yesterday and played the match today, so I was very excited. While I was playing the Ranji Trophy as captain, I was thinking about my role and the team’s needs. Even today, I was thinking about my bowling—how to put pressure on the opposition, where to attack, whether to bowl defensively or aggressively. All that was in my mind, and whatever I planned, it got executed,” said Siraj.

When you’re playing in the World Cup, you have to be mentally ready. I’ve been playing for India for almost 10 years now, so when you get a chance, you know how to prepare yourself

Mohammed Siraj

Emotion has always remained the keyword for Siraj, who continues to wear his heart on his sleeve. Whether it was the delicate morning at The Oval on Day 5 of the final India-England Test or the pleasant evening at the Wankhede on Saturday, the approach remained the same.“Obviously, there is emotion. As a player, playing in the World Cup is a different dream. So I just bowled the same line and length that I was bowling in the Ranji Trophy. When we were batting, I felt the new ball wasn’t that easy to hit. So my plan was to stick to the new ball, bowl wicket to wicket, and if I could get a wicket there, it would help the team a lot. That was the plan, and I executed it and got wickets as well. So I’m very happy,” said Siraj. The Cristiano Ronaldo wallpaper he applied to his cellphone on the morning of Day 5 of The Oval Test continues to inspire him. It was the instant mental switch which allowed him to make a seamless return to the T20I set-up.

Poll

How do you feel about Mohammed Siraj’s return to the T20I format after a long break?

“When you’re playing in the World Cup, you have to be mentally ready. I’ve been playing for India for almost 10 years now, so when you get a chance, you know how to prepare yourself. If a youngster gets the chance, he has to think about many things. But since I’ve been around the team, I know how to get ready in this format and how to set my mindset. Even when I slept last night, I just thought I would stick to the same weapon that has given me success so far. And I got the same success today as well,” said Siraj.‘Believe’, with a Ronaldo picture, continues to stare back at him every time he pulls the phone out. However, the footballer’s former club (Real Madrid) will have to wait a bit longer to see Siraj in the stands because the bowler is on T20 World Cup duty.

India’s opening night of the T20 World Cup had both chaos and class, and two standout numbers from the match told the story better than anything else. Saurabh Netravalkar finished with figures of 0 for 65, the most expensive spell ever recorded in T20 World Cup history. It surpassed Sanath Jayasuriya’s 0 for 64 against Pakistan in Johannesburg back in 2007. The numbers were harsh, but they also reflected the damage done at the death by an Indian captain who refused to let his team sink.

T20 World Cup Groups Explained: Who Can Reach the Super 8

Suryakumar Yadav’s unbeaten 84 off 49 balls was more than just a rescue act. It also placed him second on the list of highest scores in a debut innings as captain in T20 World Cups. Only Chris Gayle’s iconic 88 against Australia in 2009 stands above it. Highest score in debut innings as captain (T20 WC)88 Chris Gayle vs Aus The Oval 200984*Suryakumar Yadav vs USA Wankhede 202668*Babar Azam vs Ind Dubai 202165 Mahela Jayawardene vs Ken Joburg 200761 Mohd Ashraful vs WO Joburg 2007 India’s innings began on a nervous note after USA captain Monank Patel won the toss and chose to bowl. Abhishek Sharma fell for a duck off the very first ball he faced, setting the tone for a difficult powerplay. The pressure only intensified as wickets kept tumbling. Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan departed in quick succession, and Shadley van Schalkwyk ripped through the middle order. Although Suryakumar walked in earlier at number four, the situation worsened rapidly around him. India slid to 77 for 6, with Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh both caught in the deep. The Wankhede crowd, stunned into silence, watched their defending champions teeter on the brink. From that point on, Suryakumar took complete control. He paced the innings with remarkable calm, shepherded the tail, and then shifted gears decisively. The counterattack began in the 16th over when he exploded against Saurabh Netravalkar, hammering three fours and a towering six to swing momentum India’s way. His fifty came off 36 balls, and he was far from done. The final over summed up his authority, as Suryakumar smashed 21 runs off Netravalkar, including two more sixes, dragging India past the 160 mark and giving their bowlers something to work with. Van Schalkwyk finished with an impressive 4 for 25, but the night ultimately belonged to India’s captain. From 77 for 6 to 161 for 9, Suryakumar Yadav turned a collapse into a contest, and etched his name into T20 World Cup history in the process.

Tamil literature is eternal and its culture global, PM Modi says in Malaysia | India News

Tamil literature is eternal and its culture global, PM Modi says in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR/NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Saturday chose an Indian community event in Kuala Lumpur to shower praise on Tamil culture and highlight the presence of several Tamilians in key positions in India. The focus on Tamilians was, though, very much in order as they make up an overwhelming majority of people of Indian origins in Malaysia. Tamil literature is eternal and its culture global, he emphasised, noting that Malaysia is home to the second largest population of Indian-origin community in the world. In India, he said, Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan is a Tamilian and so are key members of his govt, EAM S Jaishankar and finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. A junior minister L Murugan is from Tamil Nadu as well, he added. Though he has often voiced his admiration for Tamil language and culture, his generous praise at the event in Kuala Lumpur had political significance as well, as Tamil Nadu is headed for the assembly polls. At the ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji (welcome Modi)’ event, Modi recalled that when he first visited Malaysia in 2015, India was in the 11th spot of the economic ladder and today, a decade later, in the top three. “With the world’s largest digital public infrastructure propelling country’s economy, creating third largest start-up hub in the world, the country is ensuring clean and green growth,” he added, announcing that “UPI would be available in Malaysia very soon. He announced India’s decision to open its first consulate in Malaysia to strengthen ongoing cooperation between India and Malaysia and expand outreach to the Indian community in Malaysia. He said Tamil is India’s gift to the world. Noting that Tamil diaspora has been present in Malaysia for many centuries, he said inspired by its history, India had established the Thiruvalluvar Chair at the University of Malaya and would now set up a Thiruvalluvar Centre to further strengthen shared heritage. The Prime Minister praised his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim for the warm welcome accorded to him and said it emphasised his love and respect for India and the Indian community. Anwar who was present at the meeting had called Modi “a great friend”.

After 44 Years, BJP returns to Mumbai mayor’s office: Ritu Tawde set to be elected unopposed; end of Thackeray era in BMC | India News

After 44 Years, BJP returns to Mumbai mayor’s office: Ritu Tawde set to be elected unopposed; end of Thackeray era in BMC

NEW DELHI: BJP corporator Ritu Tawde is set to become Mumbai’s next mayor after being elected unopposed, marking the party’s return to the post after 44 years and ending the Shiv Sena’s uninterrupted 25-year hold over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).The contest turned uncontested after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) decided not to field a challenger against Tawde, effectively clearing her path to the mayor’s office. Though the mayor’s role is largely ceremonial, it carries strong political and symbolic significance in Mumbai’s identity-driven civic politics.Tawde’s elevation will be the BJP’s first mayoral win in Mumbai since Prabhakar Pai’s tenure in 1982–83. It also means the undivided Shiv Sena, which controlled the BMC from 1997 to 2022, will not hold the mayor’s post after nearly three decades. On the final day of nominations, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, a BJP ally in the ruling Mahayuti, nominated Sanjay Ghadi as its candidate for deputy mayor. The party announced that the deputy mayor’s tenure would be split, allowing multiple corporators to serve during the term.A senior BMC official told PTI that only one nomination each was received for the mayor’s and deputy mayor’s posts before the 6 pm deadline. “We have received just one nomination from BJP’s Ritu Tawde for the mayor’s post and another from Sanjay Ghadi for the deputy mayor’s post,” the official said.Although opposition parties have not filed nominations, the election process will be formally completed on February 11, which is also the last day for withdrawal of nominations. The mayor’s post has been reserved for a woman candidate from the open category following a draw of lots by the Urban Development Department.Tawde (53), a corporator from Ghatkopar East, filed her nomination at the municipal secretary’s office in the presence of senior Mahayuti leaders, including minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and BJP Mumbai unit chief Ameet Satam. Speaking to reporters, she said a safer and more developed Mumbai was her priority and that she wanted to work for citizens of the cosmopolitan city. The Shiv Sena (UBT) was expected to challenge the BJP nominee but decided against it after a meeting at party chief Uddhav Thackeray’s residence. Former Mumbai mayor and Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar said the decision reflected respect for Marathi identity.“The BJP had to accept that Marathi manoos is a Hindu. If the mayor of Mumbai is Marathi manoos, we won’t do anything that amounts to a bad omen. We have accepted the arithmetic and will play the role of a strong opposition and fight for Mumbai,” Pednekar said. The Sena (UBT) had raised the Marathi identity plank in last month’s BMC elections, where it contested in alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats in the 227-member civic body. The ruling Mahayuti alliance, with a combined strength of 118 corporators, comfortably crossed the halfway mark of 114.Addressing a press conference earlier in the day, BJP’s Satam said that the city was set to get a BJP mayor after four decades. “We have the backing of 118 corporators and the support of more members. The Mahayuti will work to free the BMC from the clutches of corruption,” he said.Satam also said that the alliance had asserted from the beginning that Mumbai’s mayor would be Marathi and Hindu. “The city will now get a Marathi, Malvani, Konkani and Hindu mayor,” he added.Reacting sharply, the NCP (SP) criticised the BJP’s choice, saying selecting a former Congress leader as mayor had demoralised party loyalists. NCP (SP) spokesperson Clyde Crasto said, “By choosing a former Congresswoman as mayor, the BJP has insulted its own loyal corporators who have given their blood, sweat and tears for the party.”Tawde, who joined the BJP in 2012 after quitting the Congress, was elected as a corporator the same year. During her first term, she chaired the BMC’s Education Committee and raised issues related to infrastructure, water supply and public safety. She was also in the spotlight for raising objections to mannequins displaying objectionable clothing in shops.Ghadi, a corporator from Ward No. 5 who defected from Sena (UBT) to the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, will serve as deputy mayor for 15 months, party secretary Sanjay More said. The BMC, India’s richest civic body, has been under a state-appointed administrator since March 2022 following the end of the previous term. Its budget for 2025–26 stands at Rs 74,450 crore, higher than that of several Indian states.

NEW DELHI: NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar on Saturday said that he will present a detailed presentation on February 10 on the air crash that killed Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. He said that questions and doubts persist over the circumstances of the incident, which will be addressed during the briefing in Mumbai.Speaking to reporters after casting his vote in the Zilla Parishad elections in Baramati, Rohit Pawar said that several questions remained unanswered about how and why the crash occurred. He added that the forthcoming presentation would address these concerns in detail.“Everyone has questions and doubts in their minds. Why the crash happened and how it might have happened—these issues will be raised on February 10,” he said. The Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections in Maharashtra were held on Saturday for 12 Zilla Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis. The polls had earlier been postponed following Ajit Pawar’s death in the air crash on January 28.Ajit Pawar was killed along with four others when a chartered Learjet aircraft crashed while attempting to land at the table-top airstrip in Baramati, Pune district. Those killed included his personal security officer, the pilot, co-pilot and a flight attendant.Rohit Pawar said that the late leader had wished for unity between the rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party and that efforts toward a merger would continue. The NCP (SP), led by Sharad Pawar and the NCP have jointly contested the Zilla Parishad elections, with candidates fighting on the latter’s ‘clock’ symbol.“Ajit Dada sincerely wished that everyone should come together as one family. Everyone has come together today. Dada had made efforts, and we will continue to make efforts in the same manner. The family is still united,” Rohit Pawar said.Earlier, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that Ajit Pawar’s death could be the result of a political conspiracy and demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe.Citing reports that Pawar was considering leaving the BJP and rejoining the NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar, Banerjee said, “I demand a proper investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court. We have trust only in the Supreme Court. All other agencies have been completely compromised.”She described Pawar’s death as a major loss and said he was expected to return to the original faction of his party. The Opposition MLA, who represents the Karjat-Jamkhed constituency in Ahilyanagar district, also said that he would explain the reasons and intent behind the proposed party merger on February 12.“I will explain why the merger was supposed to happen and for what purpose. Whether Ajit Dada’s intention was political or emotional, I will clarify this on February 12,” he said.On the investigation into the crash, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) were making rapid progress.Providing an update, Mohol said the aircraft’s black box had been recovered and was being analysed.“The black box has been recovered, and the AAIB team and the DGCA are working on it. The data will be downloaded, followed by analysis and an inquiry. A preliminary report will be released after that,” Mohol said.He added that investigation teams from the AAIB and the DGCA’s Mumbai Regional Office reached the crash site on the day of the incident and that the AAIB Director General personally oversaw the initial probe. The investigation is being conducted under Rules 5 and 11 of the AAIB Rules, 2025, to determine the sequence of events during the aircraft’s attempted landing amid reported poor visibility.Authorities have cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, stating that the findings will be based on technical analysis of the black box data.

'Golden letter day': Piyush Goyal hails India-US trade deal; reiterates farmers protected

Union minister for commerce and industry Piyush Goyal on Saturday described the India-US trade agreement as a landmark step in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. Addressing a media briefing, he said the day would be remembered as a major achievement in strengthening economic ties between the two countries. He said discussions on the bilateral trade agreement began in February 2025, keeping the future in mind and considering the diplomatic relationship between India and the United States, as well as the friendship between the leaders of the two nations.Goyal said the key objective of the agreement is to achieve annual bilateral trade of 500 billion dollars between India and the United States.Calling the day historic, he said it would be remembered for opening new opportunities for India and said there is a wave of happiness and enthusiasm across all sectors of the country regarding the future.Goyal said the agreement has been structured in a way that protects the interests of Indian farmers and the dairy sector. He said some people in the country are against the interests of farmers, do not worry about farmers’ welfare, and mislead the public, adding that they are surprised to see that no steps in the India-US trade agreement go against farmers’ interests.Highlighting benefits for exporters, Goyal said the reciprocal tariff on Indian exports to the US has been sharply reduced from 50 percent to 18 percent under the agreement. He said the 18 percent tariff is lower than the tariffs imposed by neighbouring countries and other competing nations, which will give Indian exporters a clear advantage.Referring to public response, Goyal cited the example of a handicrafts artisan from Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh who said the tariff reduction would bring new orders, benefits and progress for his sector.Goyal said several categories of Indian exports will now attract zero duty when sent to the United States. He said gems and diamonds exported from India will be subject to zero duty under the agreement.Goyal said pharmaceutical products, which are exported from India in large quantities, will also face zero duty in the US market. He added that smartphones exported from India to the United States will continue to enjoy zero duty.In the agricultural sector, Goyal said many products will be exported to the US with zero reciprocal tariff, meaning no additional duty will be applied. He listed spices, tea, coffee and products made from them, coconut and coconut oil, vegetable wax, areca nut, Brazil nut, cashew nut and chestnut among the agricultural items covered.Goyal said several fruits and vegetables are also included under the zero-duty provisions of the agreement. He said the agreement is expected to open up new opportunities across sectors and will significantly benefit Indian exporters in the coming days.
