Haris Rauf’s bowling brilliance and Joe Clarke’s batting onslaught lead Melbourne Stars to a dominant win over Sydney Thunder in BBL|15

Haris Rauf‘s three-for and Joe Clarke‘s fiery innings powered Melbourne Stars to a commanding win over Sydney Thunder. In the 14th match of the Big Bash League 2025-26 at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Sunday, table-toppers Melbourne Stars crushed Sydney Thunder by nine wickets with 36 balls to spare, chasing down 129 in just 14 overs.

Haris Rauf dismantles Sydney Thunder with brilliant bowling

Sydney Thunder’s batting collapsed on a good Canberra surface as they were bundled out for just 128 in their full quota of 20 overs after Melbourne Stars skipper Marcus Stoinis won the toss and chose to bowl first. Despite the pitch offering plenty for stroke-making, Thunder failed to build momentum after a promising start.

Openers Sam Konstas and Matthew Gilkes began positively and took the score to 33 inside the powerplay. Gilkes looked particularly aggressive, striking a boundary and two sixes, but the early spark was snuffed out when Rauf used his slower ball cleverly to have him chipped to mid-off. Konstas soon followed, bowled by Mitchell Swepson, triggering a steady slide for the Thunder.

The pressure mounted as David Warner couldn’t convert his start and was caught in the deep off Stoinis, while Cameron Bancroft’s scratchy stay ended lbw to Swepson after an unsuccessful review. At 63 for four, Thunder were in trouble and desperately needed a partnership.

Sam Billings and Shadab Khan attempted a recovery, adding some stability and taking the total close to 90. However, Rauf returned during the power surge and turned the game decisively in the Stars’ favour, removing Billings and later Chris Green with well-disguised variations. With the middle order undone, the lower order offered little resistance. Tom Curran and Peter Siddle cleaned up the tail as Thunder lost their final five wickets cheaply, slipping from a position of hope to another batting disappointment. Rauf’s incisive spell stood out as the defining factor in the collapse.

Joe Clarke’s blistering knock seals a commanding win for Melbourne Stars

Joe Clarke produced a blistering opening act to set up a comfortable victory for the Melbourne Stars, showcasing his attacking intent from the very start of the chase. Clarke raced to a scintillating 60 from just 37 deliveries, peppering the boundary with eight crisp fours and a towering six. Alongside Sam Harper, he ensured the Stars flew out of the blocks, bringing up their fifty in a mere 3.6 overs during the power play. Clarke reached his half-century in only 29 balls, confidently dispatching Ryan Hadley with elegant flicks and forceful cuts through point, as the opening pair stitched together a commanding 86-run stand. The breakthrough eventually came when Chris Green dismissed Clarke at 86 for 1 in the 9.4th over, but by then the damage had been done.

With the platform firmly established, Harper and Glenn Maxwell calmly guided the Stars home without any hiccups. Harper remained unbeaten on 29 from 27 balls, while Maxwell added the finishing touches with an aggressive 39 not out off 20 deliveries, striking five boundaries and clearing the ropes twice. Maxwell took a particular liking to Shadab and Tanveer Sangha, ensuring the chase never drifted off course. The Stars reached 100 in just 11.1 overs and were never under pressure, as Thunder bowlers Daniel Sams and Ryan Hadley struggled to contain the flow of runs. This emphatic win keeps Melbourne Stars unbeaten with four victories from four matches, sitting comfortably at the top of the BBL|15 standings, while Sydney Thunder’s campaign continues to lose momentum.

“I was in a state of shock”: MCG curator breaks silence after farce of two-day Boxing Day Test – Ashes 2025-26

MCG head curator Matt Page has admitted to being in a “state of shock” following the dramatic conclusion of the Boxing Day Test, which saw England secure a four-wicket victory over Australia in just two days of play.

The match, which traditionally serves as the crown jewel of the Australian summer, became a chaotic “bowlers’ paradise” that has left Cricket Australia (CA) facing an estimated $10 million AUD revenue shortfall and the venue’s reputation under heavy fire.

MCG Pitch curator expresses disappointment following quick end of 4th Test

Speaking to reporters on Sunday morning—a day that was supposed to feature a sold-out crowd of 90,000—a visibly disappointed Page expressed his disbelief at how quickly the surface deteriorated.

“I was in a state of shock after the first day to see everything that happened—20 wickets in a single day,” Page said.

Notably, a staggering 36 wickets fell in just 142 overs, making it the third-shortest Test match in Australian history. For the first time since 1932, no player from either side managed to score a half-century in a Test on Australian soil.

“I’ve never been involved in a Test match like it and hopefully I’m never involved in a Test match like that again. It was a roller-coaster ride for two days to see everything unfold,” he added.

The controversy centers on Page’s decision to leave 10mm of grass on the pitch—3mm more than the 7mm left for last year’s five-day classic against India. Page explained that the decision was a preemptive measure against a forecast of high heat for Days 3 and 4, intended to prevent the pitch from cracking and becoming a “road” like the infamous 2017 Ashes draw.

Travis Head comes in support of MCG Pitch curator

Travis Head, whose second-innings knock of 46 turned out to be the highest score of the match, came out in support of MCG curator Page, admitting that the margin for error in pitch preparation is incredibly small. Acknowledging how demanding the job is for groundstaff, Head said they have it ‘bloody tough,’ especially when elite players are involved. He compared the surface to recent high-profile Tests, including last year’s MCG match—where India collapsed late on the final day—and the third Ashes Test in Adelaide, where both teams struggled despite the pitch being one of the better batting wickets he had played on.

“You look at the Test match last year, and India batted poorly on the last day… It probably looks like it’s going to a draw, and then there’s question marks around: are we going too far the other way? I feel for him [Page]. It’s bloody tough. You leave 1-2mm on with high-quality bowling and you find yourself short, and you take 2-3mm off with high-quality batting and you leave yourself the other way,” said Head as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape skittle Paarl Royals for SA20’s lowest-ever total in one-sided win

Sunrisers Eastern Cape launched their SA20 2025-26 campaign in ruthless fashion, crushing Paarl Royals by 137 runs in the third match at Boland Park, Paarl, on December 27, 2025. The defending champions produced a complete performance, setting up a massive total before dismantling the Royals for the lowest score in the tournament’s history.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape set up a formidable total against Paarl Royals

After winning the toss, Sunrisers Eastern Cape opted to bat first on a Boland Park surface that initially looked true but always promised help for disciplined seam bowling under lights. Their top order made full use of the hard new ball as Quinton de Kock and Jonny Bairstow exploded out of the blocks, racing the score past fifty inside the first five overs and instantly putting the Paarl attack under pressure. The aggressive tempo in the powerplay forced Royals’ captain to shuffle his bowlers early, but Sunrisers’ batters continued to target the shorter side of the ground and punished anything marginally off length.

The middle overs were controlled with notable composure, as Sunrisers shifted seamlessly from all-out attack to calculated accumulation, ensuring wickets in hand for a final surge at the death. Smart strike rotation against spin and precise boundary-hitting in the last four overs propelled them to 186 for 4, a total well above par at Boland Park and one that immediately exposed the fragility of the Royals’ batting card under scoreboard pressure.

Paarl Royals crumble to record-low score in SA20 history

Chasing 187, Paarl Royals required a strong, risk-managed start, but their innings unraveled almost instantly against a ferocious new-ball burst from Anrich Nortje and Adam Milne. Both quicks hit a heavy length at high pace, extracting steep bounce and seam movement, and the top order simply could not cope as Royals slumped to 15 for 4 inside the first four overs. Edged drives, mistimed pulls and indecisive prods outside off stump became a pattern, with Sunrisers’ slip cordon and ring fielders snapping up every half-chance to deepen the crisis.

As the collapse intensified, Royals’ hopes of respectability rested briefly on Asa Tribe and Kyle Verreynne, the only batters to reach double figures, but once that partnership was broken the tail folded rapidly. The hosts were bundled out for 49 in just 11.5 overs, undercutting Pretoria Capitals’ 52 against the same franchise in 2024 to set a new lowest total in SA20 history and handing Sunrisers a colossal 137-run victory. This statement win not only reinforced Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s reputation as the premier bowling unit of the league, but also highlighted how their pace battery can dictate entire campaigns by turning defendable scores into utterly one-sided contests.

Harsha Bhogle picks Test Team of the Year 2025, Pat Cummins named captain

Renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle has sparked cricket conversations worldwide by revealing his premier Test lineup for 2025. His selection highlights a shift toward high-impact players, featuring a balance of gritty traditionalists and aggressive stroke-makers. Notably, the XI, picked on cricbuzz, includes four Indian stars who anchored their team’s success throughout a busy calendar year.

Harsha Bhogle’s Test Team of the Year 2025

Stylish top order

The opening pair features a blend of technique and flair. KL Rahul secures his spot after a prolific year, amassing 813 runs in 19 innings at an average of 45.2, including three centuries. Partnering him is the unconventional Travis Head, who Bhogle praised for his match-winning cameos in the Ashes, including a vital 120 against the West Indies and consistent aggressive starts.

At number three is India’s Test captain Shubman Gill, who finished 2025 as a leading contender for Player of the Year. Gill’s staggering 983 runs, highlighted by five centuries and a mammoth 269 against England, made him an automatic choice.

Modern-day greats in the middle-order

The middle order is a “who’s who” of batting royalty. Joe Root continues his historic run, becoming the first player to cross 6,000 WTC runs. In 2025, he notched up massive scores, including a 150 against India. Following him is Steve Smith, whose twin centuries against Sri Lanka (131 and 141) early in the year proved he remains a master of the format.

Ravindra Jadeja slots in as the premier batting all-rounder. While his bowling was steady, his batting reached new heights in 2025, averaging 63.7 and striking five consecutive fifties during the tour of England.

Behind the stumps, Alex Carey earned his place with both gloves and bat. Carey enjoyed a career-best year with 743 runs at an average of 53, including a top score of 156. The lone specialist spinner is South Africa’s Simon Harmer, who terrorized lineups in late 2025, taking 21 wickets in just two Tests against India, including two separate six-wicket hauls.

The pace battery: Fire and leadership

The bowling attack is led by Bhogle’s Test Player of the Year, Mitchell Starc. The left-armer enjoyed a “prime” year at age 35, taking 55 wickets at a remarkable average of 17.3. He is joined by Pat Cummins, who not only led Australia to the WTC Final but maintained an elite bowling average of 16.53 across his appearances. Bhogle also named Cummins as the captain of the team.

Rounding off the XI is Mohammed Siraj. The Indian pacer was rewarded for his tireless work ethic and a standout series against England where he claimed 23 wickets, often outperforming more senior peers through sheer persistence.

Josh Tongue reacts after his name goes up on the MCG Honours Board

England fast bowler Josh Tongue has described seeing his name etched on the honours board at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as “a pretty special feeling,” after producing a match-winning five-wicket haul in the fourth Test of Ashes 2025-26. The moment capped a remarkable performance on one of cricket’s biggest stages and marked a deeply personal milestone in Tongue’s journey.

For any visiting player, the MCG honours board carries almost mythical significance. For Tongue, who admits he once feared his career might end prematurely, seeing his name alongside greats of the game represented far more than just a statistical achievement.

Nerves, dreams and a five-wicket haul for Josh Tongue in Boxing Day Test

Tongue, the Player of the Match of the 4th Test against Australia, revealed that the emotions began early on Boxing Day morning. Waking up to the enormity of the occasion, he admitted to feeling “a few nerves,” fully aware of what was at stake in front of one of the largest crowds in world cricket.

Those nerves soon transformed into inspiration. Tongue tore through the Australian batting line-up to claim a five-for, a spell that played a decisive role in securing a famous England victory. The achievement also guaranteed his place on the MCG honours board, a lifelong ambition realised in unforgettable fashion.

“It’s what dreams are made of. Obviously waking up on Boxing Day, a few nerves but yeah, to get a fifer and get my name on the honours board, it’s a very special feeling,” Tongue said in post-match interview to Isa Guha.

95,000 cricket fans at MCG and a roaring Barmy Army

What made the achievement even sweeter was the backdrop. Around 95,000 fans packed into the MCG, creating an atmosphere Tongue described as “amazing.” Amid the sea of noise, the familiar chants of the Barmy Army rang out, lending vocal support to England’s charge.

Tongue said the energy from the stands fuelled him, making the experience feel surreal. “I can’t be happy enough,” he admitted, reflecting on being part of a Test-winning England side at such an iconic venue.

Beyond the wickets and the roar of the crowd lies a powerful comeback story. Tongue openly acknowledged that his MCG success felt even more meaningful given the battles he has faced off the field. A series of serious injuries had once left his future in doubt, with the bowler admitting he had been “potentially retiring” at one stage.

The road back was long and demanding, filled with rehabilitation, setbacks and uncertainty. But Tongue’s determination never wavered. “Playing for England is all that I’ve ever wanted to do,” he said, explaining why he pushed through the hardest moments.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi to lead India U19 in South Africa tour, Ayush Mhatre named captain for U19 World Cup 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled India’s Under-19 squads for two major upcoming assignments – U19 tour of South Africa and U19 World Cup 2026. The 14-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been named captain for the three-match ODI series in South Africa starting January 3, while regular skipper Ayush Mhatre is expected to retain the captaincy for the highly anticipated U19 World Cup, that begins on January 15. Notably, the multi-team event will be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi set to lead India U19 in South Africa tour

In a move that highlights his meteoric rise, Suryavanshi will lead the Indian side during their brief preparatory tour of South Africa. At just 14 years of age, Suryavanshi becomes the youngest player to ever captain an Indian representative side at this level. The Bihar-born batter, who was recently honoured with Bal Puruskar Award, has been in blistering form. He recently became the youngest centurion in List A cricket history and ended 2025 as India’s leading run-scorer in Youth ODIs. Joining him in the leadership group for the South Africa tour is Aaron George, who will serve as vice-captain.

The South Africa tour is being viewed as a crucial preparatory phase, offering young players exposure to overseas conditions and competitive cricket ahead of the global tournament later in the month.

The regular leadership duo of Mhatre (captain) and Vihaan Malhotra (vice-captain) is expected to return at U19 World Cup 2026. The BCCI medical team has opted for a cautious approach, directing the pair to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for rehabilitation.

The U19 tournament will feature 16 teams divided into four groups, followed by the Super Six stage, semi-finals and the final in Harare. Five-time champions India have been drawn in Group B alongside New Zealand, Bangladesh and the USA. The Boys in Blue will begin their campaign against the USA on January 15 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

SA20 2026, DSG vs MICT Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between Durban’s Super Giants and MI Cape Town?

The SA20 2026 will deliver an immediate blockbuster rematch on Sunday as Durban’s Super Giants host MI Cape Town at Kingsmead. Thee two sides kicked off the tournament just days ago in Cape Town, producing a high-scoring thriller that set an electrifying standard for the 2025-26 season.

In that curtain-raiser, the Super Giants were imperious with the bat. A masterclass in foundation-laying from Devon Conway and Kane Williamson allowed the middle order, led by Aiden Markram and Evan Jones, to explode late and post a mammoth 232/5.

MI Cape Town’s response was equally ferocious. Ryan Rickelton played a blinding knock, smashing a breathtaking century that threatened to steal the game away, supported by a spirited cameo from Jason Smith. However, the pressure of the massive chase eventually took its toll. Despite being in the hunt until the dying moments, critical wickets saw MI Cape Town fall just 15 runs short.

Now, the scene shifts to Durban. With the wounds of that narrow defeat still fresh, MI Cape Town will be desperate to flip the script on enemy territory, while the Super Giants look to prove their opening win was no fluke.

Kingsmead Pitch Report

Kingsmead has a reputation for being a bit of a grind for batters; don’t expect a flat highway where one can just hit through the line effortlessly. The golden window for scoring is definitely against the new ball while it’s still hard. Once that shine wears off, the pitch tends to slow down, offering plenty of grip for the spinners to dictate terms in the middle overs.

Given these conditions, scoreboard pressure is king here. The average first-innings score sits at a gritty 143, suggesting that the captain winning the toss will almost certainly look to bat first, put runs on the board, and let their slow bowlers squeeze the opposition in the chase.

Squads

Durban’s Super Giants: Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Jos Buttler, Aiden Markram (c), Heinrich Klaasen (wk), Evan Jones, David Wiese, Eathan Bosch, Simon Harmer, Kwena Maphaka, Noor Ahmad, Sunil Narine, Taijul Islam, Dayyaan Galiem, Daryn Dupavillon, Tony de Zorzi, Marques Ackerman, Gerald Coetzee, David Bedingham, Andile Simelane, Gysbert Wege

MI Cape Town: Rassie van der Dussen, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Jason Smith, Nicholas Pooran, Dwaine Pretorius, George Linde, Rashid Khan (c), Corbin Bosch, Trent Boult, Tristan Luus, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada, Tom Moores, Karim Janat, Thomas Kaber, Jacques Snyman, Tiaan van Vuuren, Daniel Lategan

Stars top the points table with three wins from three games and a strong net run rate of +1.383, while Thunder sit fifth with one win and two losses from three outings.

Melbourne Stars have won all three matches so far, including a recent six-wicket victory over Adelaide Strikers and a thumping win against Sydney Sixers, with Sam Harper scoring a century in the latter. Manuka Oval Pitch Report

Manuka Oval in Canberra delivers a batters-friendly surface with true bounce and good carry, ideal for strokeplay in Big Bash League encounters. The pitch typically supports high-scoring games, with first innings averages around 149 runs across 21 T20s, though it slows slightly under lights, aiding spinners in the latter stages. Chasing teams hold a slight edge (9 wins vs 9 batting first, with ties), making toss decisions pivotal – captains often opt to bat first. Expect quick outfield and short boundaries to favour aggressive batting, but pacers like Rauf and Topley can exploit early movement.

MLS vs SYT Weather Report, Pitch Report Of Canberra- BBL 2025-26, Match 14

Melbourne Stars will go head-to-head against the Sydney Thunder in the fourteenth match of the Big Bash League. In this article, we determine the MLS vs SYT Weather Report and Pitch Report of Manuka Oval for the fourteenth game of the tournament.

MLS vs SYT Weather Report, Pitch Report Of Canberra- BBL 2025-26, Match 14:

MLS vs SYT Weather Report of Canberra:

There is no chance of rain during the MLS vs SYT game in Canberra. The maximum temperature is predicted to be 26°C, while the minimum temperature would be 8°C.

MLS vs SYT Pitch Report of Manuka Oval:

The pitch for the upcoming game between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder, scheduled to be played at the Manuka Oval in Canberra, is expected to be a good one for a game of T20 cricket.

Your daily dose of cricket!

next

Meaning that it should have something in it for both batters and bowlers, which makes for an even contest between bat and ball, which isn’t the case too often in this format.

The batters will enjoy batting on the wicket after they negotiate the initial help for the bowlers that will be present when the ball is new, as it might swing a bit, posing a good challenge for them, especially in the powerplay.

As far as the bowlers are concerned, they will have to pick wickets early in the innings, as failing to do so may result in the batters dictating terms once they get set.

The pacers can use the assistance available in the wickets with the hard new ball by getting it to swing and pitching it fuller to induce an edge from the batter to get him out caught in the slips or by the keeper.

As far as the spinners are concerned they will be entrusted to control the flow of runs in the middle overs, but for that to happen, they will also rely on the fast bowlers to provide at least a couple of breakthroughs before they come to bowl.

The pacemen will also be banked upon to restrict the batters from freeing their arms at the backend of the innings.

If we talk about what an ideal decision for the team that wins the toss in the upcoming game should it should be to bowl first, as it has been the way to go in T20 cricket in the last few years.

A score of 180-190 is what the team that bats first in the MLS vs SYT game should look to post on the board and bank on their bowlers to pick early wickets for them in order to stay ahead in the contest.

Conclusion

Melbourne Stars would hope to keep up the good work that the team has done in the ongoing edition of the Big Bash League by registering another win in the tournament against the Sydney Thunder, having been unbeaten so far.

Sydney Thunder, on the other hand, would also aim to earn back-to-back wins having got the better of Brisbane Heat in their last match.
