Ben Stokes’ main man drops RETIREMENT BOMBSHELL after steering England to MCG Test win

England fast bowler Josh Tongue opened up about his retirement after the team’s win over Australia in the fourth Test of the Ashes 2025-26. Tongue admitted that there was a time when his body let him down so badly that retirement felt like a real possibility, but he decided to keep pushing through the setbacks.

England secured a four-wicket win over Australia in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, December 27. The visiting team secured their first Test win after losing three consecutive matches. Josh Tongue was named Player of the Match after playing a key role in England’s victory.

After the game, Tongue said the achievement felt like a dream, especially taking a five-wicket haul on Boxing Day and earning a place on the honours board. He also praised the energy of the large crowd and the Barmy Army.

“It’s what dreams are made of. Obviously waking up on Boxing Day, a few nerves but yeah, to get a fifer and get my name on the honours board, it’s a very special feeling,” he said.

“It was with 95,000 people yesterday. The Barmy Army have been unbelievable these past four games and especially here as well, in front of 95,000 people, it’s amazing being in the moment for them,” Tongue added.

I Was In a Tough Situation With My Body – Josh Tongue

Josh Tongue also spoke about the difficult phase of his career. He stated that his body was letting him down at the time, but he stayed committed to his recovery and put in the hard work to return to fitness. That determination has paid off, as he is now back playing for England.

100%. I was in a tough situation with my body and stuff (on his past injuries). I was potentially retiring, but I’m glad that I put in the hard work to get myself back playing cricket. And now playing for England, it’s all that I’ve always wanted to do,” Tongue noted.

I Can’t Be Happy Enough – Josh Tongue

Tongue said that the pitch suited the bowlers and that the entire unit worked together by adjusting lengths and applying pressure throughout the match. He added that collective discipline and execution were key to England’s dominance. The pacer said that he will cherish the win for a long time.

I’d say all of them, I think (on his favourite wicket). Obviously, coming to the ground on the first day, we knew it was going to be great. It suits us. And how we all bowled out there, making sure we broke our lengths. I thought all of our bowlers did exceptionally well,” he said.

“To be part of a Test match-winning team as well, here at the MCG. 100% (if he was ready to bat in the second innings). To win here at the MCG, Boxing Day Test, I can’t be happy enough.”

PCB to sell 2 new PSL teams for less than Rishabh Pant-Shreyas Iyer’s combined IPL salary

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning to expand the Pakistan Super League by adding two new franchises ahead of the 2026 edition. Each of the new teams will come with a reserve price of 1.3 billion Pakistani rupees per year (approx INR 41 crore), according to the Pakistan board’s valuation for the next phase of the tournament.

The PCB has shortlisted six cities – Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Hyderabad, Muzaffarabad, and Gilgit – for the two new Pakistan Super League franchises. Two of these locations will be finalized by January. The final auction for the two new teams in the T20 tournament is scheduled to take place on January 8.

Strong Interest in New PSL Franchises as PCB Reviews Bids

According to reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board has received strong interest in its plan to add two new teams to the Pakistan Super League. A total of 12 groups have submitted initial bid documents, including five from overseas, highlighting growing foreign interest in the league.

Your daily dose of cricket!

next

The PCB has not yet announced the final list of bidders. Before doing so, it will carry out financial and technical checks to ensure all interested parties meet the required standards.

Earlier this month, the PCB held PSL roadshows in London and New York to attract international investors. The board has also offered strong financial guarantees to make the new franchises more appealing as it looks to expand the league.

PCB Guarantees Rs 850 Million Annual Revenue for Each PSL Franchise

The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced a financial plan to support teams. Each franchise will be guaranteed at least Rs 850 million every season from the league’s central revenue pool for the next five years. If a team earns less than this amount in any season, the PCB will pay the difference.

At present, the PSL has six teams, and each pays a different annual franchise fee. Quetta Gladiators are valued at Rs 360 million, while Multan Sultans have the highest value at Rs 1.8 billion. Other teams, such as Lahore Qalandars, Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, and Peshawar Zalmi, fall in between these figures.

Once the league expands to eight teams, all franchises will receive an equal share from the central revenue pool. The PCB has also allowed each franchise to spend up to USD 1.4 million on players through the PSL draft. This will help teams build stronger squads and increase competition in the league.

Former Multan Sultans Owners Re-Enter PSL Franchise Bidding Process

The ownership situation around Multan Sultans has taken a new turn. According to reports, the franchise’s former owners have entered the bidding process to buy one of the two new PSL teams. They gave up control of Multan Sultans following disagreements with the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Despite their return to the bidding process, there is still no clear answer on who will own Multan Sultans next season. The uncertainty has raised questions ahead of the upcoming PSL edition.

There is strong speculation that the PCB may run the Multan Sultans themselves for the next season. The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League is scheduled to begin on March 26 next year, and a final decision on ownership is expected before then.

Melbourne Stars Playing XI vs Sydney Thunder- BBL 2025-26, Match 14

Melbourne Stars will face the Sydney Thunder in the fourteenth match of the Big Bash League. This article provides details about the Melbourne Stars’ Playing 11 vs Sydney Thunder for the fourteenth match of the tournament.

Melbourne Stars Playing XI vs Sydney Thunder- BBL 2025-26, Match 14

Openers: Sam Harper (wk), Joe Clarke

Melbourne Stars would look to keep the winning momentum that they have on their side, going by winning their fourth game of the ongoing edition of the Big Bash League against the Sydney Thunder.

The Marcus Stoinis-led side would back its players to replicate the similar performance that they delivered in the last match against the Sydney Sixers in their respective departments.

Your daily dose of cricket!

next

The onus will be on the openers to get the team off to a good start and make meaningful contributions individually as well.

The pair of Sam Harper, who scored an attacking century in the previous match to get his team over the line, and Joe Clack will be entrusted to do their job to the best of their abilities.

A good start given by the openers will have the middle order batters of the Stars to capitalize on it and get the opposition bowlers under pressure both while batting first and while chasing.

Middle-order batsmen and all-rounders: Campbell Kellaway, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis (c), Hilton Cartwright, Tom Curran, Jonathan Merlo

The opening batters will be followed by a middle order that has shown good form in the first three matches and would want to carry the same against the Thunder, who are also coming into the match on the back of a win against the Heat.

The middle order of the Stars comprises a good blend of young and experienced batters, all of whom have the capability to turn the match in their team’s favour from any situation.

Names like captain Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Hilton Cartwright provide much-needed experience and stability to the Stars in the middle phase of their batting innings.

Campbell Kellaway, the young batter, has also impressed everyone with his intelligent batting in the first three matches, as he has played a couple of match-winning innings for his team and would look to do the same in the upcoming game.

Bowlers: Mitchell Swepson, Haris Rauf, Peter Siddle

As far as the bowling attack of the Melbourne Stars is concerned, it has a total of seven bowling options, which provides much-needed flexibility to the bowling lineup.

Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, both of whom have a rich vein of experience when it comes to playing T20 cricket, have been able to chip in with the ball as well, with Maxwell bowling the first over of the innings and Stoinis controlling things in the middle phase.

Other than Maxwell and Stoinis Stars also have the ace of Haris Rauf and the experience of Peter Siddle and Tom Curran to rely upon in the fast bowling department.

Mitchell Swepson has been banked upon to take care of the spin bowling department of the Stars.

Coup inside BCCI? Gautam Gambhir backstabbed as board secretly contacts VVS Laxman for head coach role

A new report has made a significant revelation about the future of Gautam Gambhir as the all-format head coach of the India National Cricket Team.

The report claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reached out to the legendary batter, VVS Laxman, for the Test head coach job after India’s series loss to South Africa.

Gautam Gambhir struggling as India head coach in Tests

Since becoming the all-format head coach, Gautam Gambhir has steered Team India to the ICC Champion Trophy 2025 and the Asia Cup 2025 triumphs in a quick span of time.

Your daily dose of cricket!

next

India have shown sheer dominance in T20I cricket and instilled fear in the minds of the opposition teams, and in ODIs, they have delivered good performance under Gambhir.

However, when it comes to Test cricket, things have been quite doom and gloom. In the purest format of the game, Gautam Gambhir’s India have struggled badly, and a lot of questions have been raised over the head coach’s tactics.

Gambhir has been under fire for relying more on the all-rounders in a format that demands specialists to get the job done. Also, the head coach has tried to implement a T20I-style formula in Test cricket, which hasn’t worked, and India have been at the receiving end of shocking Test series losses.

Gautam Gambhir oversaw 2 home Test series whitewashes

In his first Test series as head coach at home, Gambhir guided India to a 2-0 triumph over Bangladesh. However, what came next was horrendous as the Indians were whitewashed by the Kiwis at home. It was the first-ever 0-3 clean sweep that India suffered at home in cricket history.

Following that, India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 1-3. The new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship started with the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, and a young Indian team drew the series 2-2.

Things started looking good from thereon as India also whitewashed West Indies at home 2-0, but the hosts suffered yet another setback when the Temba Bavuma-led South Africa humbled India with a dominant 2-0 clean sweep.

BCCI looked at VVS Laxman as Gautam Gambhir’s replacement

Now, a report in PTI has revealed that someone who matters in the BCCI had once again informally approached VVS Laxman to check if he would be interested in becoming the Test head coach after India’s loss to South Africa.

VVS Laxman, who was initially seen as Rahul Dravid‘s successor as head coach, denied the job and stated that he is happy being the ‘Head of Cricket’ at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

Gautam Gambhir has signed a deal till the 2027 ODI World Cup, but that contract could prematurely end depending upon India’s performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, as the jury is still out on whether he is the right person to remain at the helm, especially in Test cricket.

“Gambhir does have a strong backing within the power corridors of Indian cricket, and obviously, if India retain the T20 World Cup or at least reach the final, he would be seamlessly continuing with his assignment. However, it would be interesting if Gambhir continues in Tests too,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

“His advantage being (that there) aren’t too many alternate options in red ball format since VVS Laxman isn’t interested in coaching the senior Test team,” the source added.

The report also claimed that there is chaos in the Indian dressing room currently, and players aren’t feeling as secure as they did during Rahul Dravid’s tenure.

Ashes 2025-26: Ben Stokes and Steve Smith slam MCG pitch after 4th Test ends in two days

England pulled off a stunning four-wicket victory over Australia in the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), but the result was quickly overshadowed by fierce criticism of the pitch after the match ended midway through Day 2. A total of 36 wickets fell across two days, with neither side managing an innings score of 200, prompting both captains to condemn the surface used for the iconic Boxing Day Test.

Bowler-friendly MCG pitch dominates the contest

The match, part of the Ashes 2025–26 series, saw seam bowlers dominate from the opening session. Australia were dismissed for 152 in the first innings and fared little better in the second, folding for 132. England, despite struggling themselves with the bat and being bowled out for 110, successfully chased a modest target of 175 to seal the win.

The unusually short Test immediately drew attention, with fans and pundits questioning how a marquee fixture at the MCG could be over so quickly. It was England’s first Test victory on Australian soil since 2011, but even that milestone could not mask concerns over the playing conditions.

Ben Stokes voices strong disapproval of the surface

England captain Ben Stokes was forthright in his assessment of the pitch, revealing that his feedback to the match referee was “not very favourable.” Speaking after the game, Stokes said the surface failed to live up to the expectations associated with a Boxing Day Test.

“To be brutally honest, that’s not really what you want,” Stokes said. “For a Boxing Day Test match, you don’t expect a game to finish in less than two days.”

Stokes went further, suggesting the reaction would have been far harsher had such a pitch been produced outside Australia. “There would be hell on if that pitch had been produced anywhere else,” he told the BBC, highlighting the imbalance that saw 36 wickets fall without a single innings crossing 200.

Steve Smith admits pitch offered excessive assistance to the bowlers

Australia’s stand-in skipper Steve Smith echoed Stokes’ sentiments, conceding that the surface provided too much help to the bowlers. Smith pointed to the amount of grass left on the pitch as a key factor in the excessive seam movement throughout the match.

“When you see 36 wickets across two days, that’s probably too much,” Smith said. “It probably did a little bit more than they wanted it to. Maybe if we dropped it down to eight millimetres, it would be about right.”

Smith acknowledged that both teams struggled to adapt, with batters rarely given the chance to settle as the ball continued to nip around.

Reflecting on Australia’s twin batting collapses, Smith felt that a lack of meaningful partnerships prevented the game from evolving. “If we could have just built a couple of those partnerships, perhaps the ball would have softened a bit and the game would have played a little easier,” he explained.

The relentless assistance for seamers meant batters were constantly under threat, turning what is usually a five-day spectacle into a frenetic, stop-start contest dominated by bowlers.

Rare two-day finish at MCG sparks wider debate

Two-day finishes at the MCG are rare and often remembered for extraordinary circumstances. While some observers likened the match to classic bowler-friendly Tests of the past, many felt this contest crossed the line, depriving fans of extended play at one of cricket’s most celebrated venues.

The independence enjoyed by Australian curators also became a talking point, with Stokes hinting at double standards in how pitches are judged globally. He stressed that while conditions cannot be changed once a match begins, marquee fixtures deserve surfaces that allow a fair contest between bat and ball.
