VHP hits back at NBCC, says RSS link to Nagaland church row ‘misplaced’

NEW DELHI: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Wednesday criticised the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) over its statement alleging an Assam Rifles raid on a church in Nagaland, saying the remarks against the RSS and VHP were “misplaced” and could create social divisions. The response comes after the NBCC condemned a late-night operation at Samziuram Baptist Church in Peren district on March 9, terming it a violation of religious sanctity and, in its statement, accusing organisations like RSS and VHP of promoting and justifying violence.VHP international president Alok Kumar said the NBCC’s reference to RSS and VHP was “completely out of context” as neither organisation had any role in the incident. He described the remarks as an attempt to “create enmity between different sections of society”.Kumar also cited local inputs, claiming that the village authorities and pastor had indicated there was no harassment or damage during the security operation. He said RSS and VHP are “law-abiding and patriotic organisations” engaged in social service, particularly among marginalised communities.Calling the NBCC statement “mischievous and dishonest”, the VHP urged restraint and cautioned against turning a security-related incident into a religious or ideological controversy.

'Loved us, married Modiji': Kharge's punchline on Deve Gowda remark leaves PM in splits - watch

NEW DELHI: Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday paid tributes to his outgoing colleagues in the Upper House while taking a dig at former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda. Kharge, speaking during his farewell said he had known the veteran leader for over 54 years and had worked closely with him, before the former PM’s party alligned with the BJP.“I know Deve Gowda ji for more than 54 years and I worked with him a lot. Later, I don’t know what happened…’ Wo mohabbat humare saath kiye, shadi Modi sahab ke sath,” Kharge said, drawing laugh from fellow MPs and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Deve Gowda became Prime Minister in 1996 at the head of a United Front government backed by Congress, marking a key phase of cooperation. In Karnataka, his party, JD(S), later alternated between opposing and partnering Congress. Kharge’s farewell speech focused on the enduring nature of public service. He said those in politics “neither get tired nor retire” because of their commitment to serving the country. While he is formally retiring from his current term, Kharge is expected to return to the House, reinforcing his point that political life rarely comes to a definitive end.Earlier in the day, PM Modi also addressed the House, thanking outgoing members for their contributions and echoing a similar sentiment. “There is no full stop in politics. The future is waiting for you,” the Prime Minister said, urging retiring MPs to continue contributing to public life. He also called on newly elected members to learn from senior leaders such as Deve Gowda, Kharge and Sharad Pawar, noting their decades of parliamentary experience.PM Modi also singled out Ramdas Athawale for his wit, remarking that humour and satire in the House had diminished in recent years but remained alive through figures like him. Athawale is among 37 members completing their terms, alongside leaders including Priyanka Chaturvedi, Tiruchi Siva and Abhishek Manu Singhvi. The retirements follow elections to 37 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states, with 26 candidates elected unopposed. Political developments in states such as Bihar, where opposition abstentions aided the NDA, have further reshaped the Upper House’s composition.

Tharoor Exposes Reality of LPG Shortages, Questions Modi Govt’s Claims

The Congress leader said that both American and Iranian objectives had largely been met, making the continuation of the conflict detrimental to global interests.“I have been calling publicly for the government to now take a lead in demanding an end to this conflict. I think both sides frankly have reached a point where they’re not doing anyone any good. The Americans have said they have hit all the targets they want to hit. The Iranians, at the same time, have the success of being able to preserve their regime and keep themselves going. I think between these two, that should be enough,” Tharoor told news agency ANI.Tharoor further warned that instability in the region was affecting the wider world, particularly through disruptions to critical supply routes.“The world is suffering. We have real problems in getting supplies, oil, and gas through the Strait of Hormuz. The whole region should not be held hostage to this particular conflict. I think the conflict should be ended,” he said. The current round of conflict in West Asia began on February 28 with the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering fighting between Israel and the United States on one side and Iran on the other. The conflict escalated after the 86-year-old leader was killed in joint military strikes by the US and Israel. Iran responded by targeting Israeli and US assets in several Gulf countries and Israel, disrupting the Strait of Hormuz and affecting global energy markets and economic stability.Due to the conflict, Iran has effectively restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies. However, Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, earlier said that Indian vessels would be allowed to pass through the strategically significant waterway. He added that the Iranian leadership was aware of expressions of sympathy from people in India and remained mindful of India’s energy needs.Meanwhile, an Indian LPG carrier, Nanda Devi, arrived at Vadinar port in Gujarat’s Jamnagar on Tuesday, carrying 46,500 metric tonnes of LPG for ship-to-ship transfer after successfully transiting the Strait of Hormuz. On Monday evening, the Indian carrier LPG Shivalik, carrying 46,000 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas, reached Mundra Port. Of this, 20,000 metric tonnes will be unloaded at Mundra, while the remaining 26,000 metric tonnes is scheduled for Mangalore.

Terror group planned India hits, backed Myanmar rebels: Probe

LUCKNOW: Central agencies claimed to have busted an international terrorist network involving six Ukrainians and one American, linking the group to allegedly plotting attacks targeting India while equipping anti-junta insurgents in Myanmar’s Chin state with military drone capabilities.Three Ukrainian war veterans – Petro Hurba, Taras Slyviak and Ivan Sukmanovskyi – were arrested by Bureau of Immigration officials at Lucknow airport on March 13 and handed over to NIA. They have been charged under UAPA.The alleged network was led by US national, Mathew Aron Van Dyke, arrested at Kolkata airport, while three more Ukrainians – Stefankiv Marian, Honcharuk Maksim and Kaminskyi Viktor – were held in Delhi recently, investigators said Tuesday.Van Dyke, who describes himself online as founder of a security consulting firm and a filmmaker, has claimed involvement in conflicts in Libya and Ukraine and covert operations in Venezuela. All seven accused are in NIA custody as investigators expand the probe into alleged cross-border links, supply chains and possible threats to Indian security. On Monday, additional sessions judge Prashant Sharma at Patiala House Courts in New Delhi sent the group to 11-day police custody, highlighting that the allegations have a direct bearing on “national security and interests of India”. The court held that interrogation is custody is necessary at this stage of the investigation.According to probe details, the Lucknow detainees flew from UAE to India on tourist visas in Dec 2025, travelled to Mizoram without mandatory restricted area permits, and allegedly crossed into Myanmar, where they established contact with armed groups hostile to India.Investigators said the suspects travelled by bus from Guwahati to Lucknow and checked into a hotel near the airport hours before their planned departure. The hotel owner said the trio claimed to be tourists, with one identifying himself as a chef, but avoided questions about prior movements.“Timely submission of Form C by the hotel played a crucial role in tracking them,” a source said.Investigators alleged the group sourced and moved drone consignments from Europe into India and onward to Myanmar, where they trained ethnic insurgents engaged in conflict with the junta.Mizoram CM Lalduhoma had earlier told the state assembly intelligence inputs suggested presence of Ukrainian war veterans in Chin providing training to rebel outfits. With inputs from Delhi
