'Ashes to ashes, dust to dust': Inside Masaan Holi at Manikarnika Ghat

Kashi me khele,Ghat me khele,Holi khele masaane mein. This isn’t just a song line echoing across India, it is an emotion that Banaras lives and breathes each year. In most parts of the country, Holi arrives in a riot of colour, gulal in the air, water guns primed, laughter echoing through narrow lanes. But on the ancient ghats of Kashi, Holi does not explode in pinks and yellows. Instead, it unfolds in muted greys, where devotees gather not with pichkaris and gulal, but with sacred ashes lifted from the cremation pyres that symbolise life’s final truth. Here, colour yields to cinder. Laughter melts into resonant chants of Har Har Mahadev. Celebration sheds its carnival skin and turns contemplative, less revelry, more reckoning. This is Masaan Holi also known as Bhasma Holi or Smashan Holi is the Holi of the cremation ground, where faith dances in the shadow of fire and mortality.

Where fire never sleeps

Masaan Holi unfolds primarily at Manikarnika Ghat and Harishchandra Ghat, the two sacred grounds where funeral pyres burn almost continuously. The term “Masaan” comes from the Sanskrit “shmashaan”, meaning cremation ground. In this city of liberation, where life and death coexist without apology and where the funeral pyres burn eternally, the ashes of the departed become the medium of celebration.Masaan ki Holi involves the use of ashes from cremation pyres. Rooted in Shaivite traditions, Masaan Holi draws Aghori sadhus, ascetics, and devoted followers of Shiva-the seekers who choose to confront mortality rather than turn away from it. Devotees gently smear bhasm, or vibhuti (sacred ash) on one another, symbolising the unbroken cycle of birth and death.

But why is Masaan Holi celebrated?

To understand Masaan Holi, one must first step into mythology. The festivities begin a day after Rangbhari Ekadashi at Kashi Vishwanath Temple. This day is believed to mark Goddess Parvati’s “gauna” following her wedding to Shiva on Mahashivratri. While the divine wedding was celebrated in grandeur, legend says certain celestial beings, yakshas, gandharvas, kinnars were not part of the elite guest list.

So what did Shiva do?

According to lore, the ascetic god, dancer, mystic, and the original rule-breaker draped in leopard skin with a live serpent as ornament chose to celebrate with his underworld friends, his companions of the cremation grounds. At the Mahashmashana, he played Holi with ashes from burning pyres, dancing amid fire and smoke, chanting “Har Har Mahadev.”And thus began the tradition.

Entering the grey zone

As someone in her mid-20s, raised on stories of India’s layered spiritual traditions, I had long been curious about this praxis, this raw, unsanitised ritual. Social media has turned Masaan Holi into a viral sensation. Aesthetic reels of ash-smeared faces, slow-motion chants, cinematic smoke spirals. But what lies beyond the filtered frames?Determined to find out, I arrived in Banaras a day after Rangbhari Ekadashi. With only two days in hand the modest luxury of a journalist’s week off, I wrapped myself in full clothes, bracing for what most would call “colour play,” except here the colour was absent itself!Walking towards the ghats, the mood shifted. The closer I came to Manikarnika, the denser the throng. A swelling sea of humanity moved in waves, devotees, children perched on shoulders, saffron-clad ascetics, Aghori sadhus with ash-lined foreheads. The air thickened with chants and anticipation. And then the quirky chaos began.

The human whirlpool

What looked from afar like spiritual fervour turned, up close, into a human traffic jam. I could not see the headcount hurricane but gosh it existed!A shoulder-to-shoulder brigade surging toward the same sacred point. Neither could I exit nor could I move! The crowd grew unruly. Elbows nudged, slippers slipped, and personal space evaporated into the smoky air. I found myself caught in a swirling whirlpool of bodies, a buzzing bunch where neither retreat nor advance seemed possible. Were they all devotees? Seekers of the divine? Some, surely. But others seemed to be thrill-chasers, intoxicated more by the spectacle than the sanctity. Pushes became shoves. Chants grew louder. For a moment, I felt less like a pilgrim and more like driftwood in a restless tide. There came a point when I had two choices, hold on to my breath or let go of my slippers. The slippers lost.To this day, they rest somewhere on the ghats of Manikarnika, an unintended offering to ghats in Kashi. In that crush, I remembered news reports of stampedes, of families separated, of chaos turning catastrophic. The thin line between devotion and disorder felt terrifyingly real.Yet, as abruptly as chaos peaked, calm appeared.Breaking free from the human huddle, I finally reached the ghat. The Ganga flowed with her usual indifference to human frenzy. I dipped my feet into the cold water, letting its quiet rhythm steady my racing thoughts.Nearby, the ritual began at the Mahashmashan Nath Temple where aarti flames flickered against the smoky backdrop. Devotees smeared ash on their foreheads and “Har Har Mahadev” rose in unison but not as noise, but as invocation.Ashes gathered from the pyres were handled with quiet reverence. The steady rhythm of drums filled the air, bhajans echoed across the ghats. The procession moved through the narrow pathways of the cremation ground, less a parade and more a pilgrimage. The symbolism is stark yet profound, everything turns to ash. Ego, beauty, status, ambition! In playing Holi with vibhuti, devotees symbolically surrender vanity and embrace impermanence. It is purification not through colour, but through confrontation.Death is not denied here. It is acknowledged, even celebrated as a transition.

A festival, transformed?

Locals spoke candidly about change.“Ever since social media made it famous, the essence has shifted,” one elderly resident told me. “There are fewer sadhus now, more artists or performers who dress up for the event.”He wasn’t entirely dismissive, just reflective.Artists now danced around sacred fire, their movements framed by a constant flicker of camera flashes. What was once an intimate, inward ritual now unfolds before an eager audience, its silence occasionally interrupted by the click of lenses and the hum of recording phones. Was he right? Maybe yes. Maybe not. Traditions evolve, after all. But the tension between sacred and spectacle was palpable. This year, for the first time, celebrations were restricted to within the Mahashmashan Nath Temple premises. Authorities did not allow the public to play with pyre ash directly on the ghats. Overcrowding, objections from members of the Kashi Vidwat Parishad and sections of the Dom Raja family, along with ongoing development work, made the situation difficult to manage. The concerns were about following scriptural norms and ensuring safety. With funeral processions moving alongside the celebrations, managing the space became challenging. While standing there with ash floating through the air like ghostly confetti, I realised something. Social media captures moments but there’s a big difference between watching something online and actually experiencing it.Masaan Holi demands immersion” means the festival cannot be understood through a quick video. It has to be felt !A one-minute reel may aestheticise the smoke. But it cannot convey the weight of mortality that lingers in the air. It cannot replicate the discomfort of being crushed in a crowd or the serenity of the Ganga’s touch moments later.Masaan Holi is not entertainment. It is an existential encounter. You arrive curious. You leave contemplative.

Why I’d go back

Despite the chaos, despite the lost slippers and the human horde, if someone asks whether I would return? The answer is Yes!Because beyond the huge crowd and the performative enthusiasm, there was beauty. Raw, unsettling beauty. If myths are to be believed, Shiva himself dances here each year, carefree, ash-smeared, unbothered by worldly decorum. And in fleeting moments, amid chants and smoke, you almost feel that presence.Banaras has a way of dissolving certainty. It reminds you that life is fragile, ego is temporary, and death is not an end but a passage.Masaan Holi is Kashi’s paradox! Chaotic yet calm, macabre yet magnificent. It is where colourless ash becomes the brightest metaphor of all.And somewhere between the fire that never sleeps and the river that never stops flowing, you understand why this city plays Holi differently. Not with colours. But with impermanence.

Birth Anomalies: 6L kids born with anomalies per year but no national registry to track them | India News

6L kids born with anomalies per year but no national registry to track them

NEW DELHI: Every year, nearly 6 lakh babies in India are born with congenital anomalies. Yet, the country has no national registry to track them. With congenital conditions now accounting for a growing share of child deaths as infectious mortality declines, experts say the gap in surveillance and coordinated care is becoming urgent. India contributes 16% of global deaths linked to birth defects, according to recent estimates. On Monday, Smile Train India and Birth Defects Research Foundation launched Birth Anomalies Network of India (BIND) to push for prevention, early diagnosis, and structured long-term care. The platform was unveiled in New Delhi.Central to its agenda is a proposed National Birth Anomalies Registry to generate reliable nationwide data, identify preventable risk factors and to guide health planning. Experts acknowledged that current surveillance is fragmented, screening uneven and referral pathways are weak, especially outside metropolitan cities.Congenital heart disease, cleft lip and palate, spina bifida, clubfoot, Down syndrome, and vision and hearing impairments form a substantial part of the burden. Many are treatable if detected early, but multidisciplinary care is rarely integrated into routine newborn services. Mamta Carroll, vice president and regional director, Asia, Smile Train, said birth anomalies are under-recognised in public discourse.

Karnataka Scheduled Caste Sub-Classification Bill: Under pressure, Karnataka to revise internal quota of SC communities | India News

Under pressure, Karnataka to revise internal quota of SC communities

BENGALURU: Under pressure from Left sect Scheduled Caste (SC) communities and two of its own ministers, Karanataka’s Siddaramaiah-led Congress govt has decided to revisit an earlier decision to fill 56,432 govt posts without internal reservation. The cabinet is expected to deliberate on introducing pro rata internal reservation within the existing 15% SC quota at a meeting Thursday. The move comes days after governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot granted assent to the Karnataka Scheduled Castes Sub-Classification Bill 2025, which provides for internal quotas among SC communities. The bill, passed in Dec last year, proposes to enhance overall reservation for SCs from 15% to 17% and divide it among 101 SC communities. Gehlot’s assent came after protests in Dharwad by job aspirants who demanded the govt fill nearly 2.5 lakh vacancies across departments. Recruitment has largely been frozen since Oct 2024 to facilitate implementation of the internal quota system. Under the 17% structure in the bill signed by Gehlot, the Left sect (16 communities) would get 6% under Category A, the Right sect (19 communities) 6% under Category B, and 63 communities 5% under Category C. Those under Adi Andhra, Adi Dravida and Adi Karnataka groups can opt for reservation under Category A or B.But this matrix breaches the overall 50% ceiling on total reservation decreed by the Supreme Court, and a case disputing it is pending in court. The govt, therefore, issued a notification to fill 56,432 posts under the existing 15% SC quota , clarifying that the enhanced 17% quota would be implemented in recruitments only after a decision by the court. This triggered sharp reactions from stakeholders.

Nitish’s son Nishant set for political launch ahead of Rajya Sabha election

NEW DELHI: Nishant Kumar, the son of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, is set to enter politics, a development which marks a reversal of his father’s abiding aversion to dynastic politics but owes as much to growing clamour within JDU as the party sees in him a legatee who can help it link with its core supporters in case of leadership transitition.Multiple party functionaries said Nitish, who recently turned 75 and finds his health under scrutiny, has given his nod to his son joining politics. Though the speculation about him getting one of the two Rajya Sabha seats that JDU is set to get is just that, speculation, indications suggest that the party leadership may have overcome the hestitancy which saw it defy the clamour from ranks for letting Nitish’s son in the arena.Nishant Kumar’s late turn to politics, at 50 years of age, is a growing acknowledgement among key JDU functionaries that he can help the party navigate the competitive and unpredictable terrain it faces in the crowded political scene in Bihar as an important face with whom its traditional voters – Kurmis and sections of backwards and Dalits – can connect due to their bond with his father.Bihar minister Shrawon Kumar, who is from JDU, said Nishant is set to enter politics and whether he will go to Rajya Sabha or not will be clear in a day or two. A senior JDU functionary emphasised Nitish’s staunch opposition to dynastic politics but noted the uncertain future that several regional parties face where there is no clear line of succession. On the other hand, he added, RJD has retained its base despite repeated poll drubbings as its traditional voters have accepted Lalu Prasad’s son Tejashwi Yadav as his political heir. While the future path for Nishant is far from predictable, his presence will help galvanise JDU’s base, which is in confusion over its future beyond Nitish.

Bjp Response To Sonia Gandhi: ‘Khamenei supported J&K rebels’: BJP hits out at Sonia Gandhi | India News

'Khamenei supported J&K rebels': BJP hits out at Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI: BJP on Tuesday slammed Sonia Gandhi’s denunciation of the government’s silence over the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli attack as the party recalled the deceased Iranian’s support for the secessionist forces in Kashmir and said diplomacy cannot be reduced to appeasement or performative politics.BJP’s foreign department head Vijay Chauthaiwale cited several statements of Khamenei that were critical of India and said Sonia needed to “brush up” her memory. In one statement in 2017 the Iranian leader had called for the “Muslim world to openly support the people of Yemen, Bahrain, and Kashmir and repudiate oppressors and tyrants who attacked them,” Chauthaiwale said. “India has not been silent. It has consistently called for restraint, respect for sovereignty, and de-escalation. With millions of citizens living and working across the Gulf, along with critical economic and energy linkages, reckless commentary is neither practical nor responsible,” he said. Sonia’s article portraying India’s response to the crisis as “silence” is misleading and reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of responsible diplomacy, BJP’s Amit Malviya said. He added when Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was killed in 2011, the Congress-headed UPA govt neither issued a condolence nor mounted any condemnation. “Was the UPA wrong in 2011, or is the Modi govt right today? One cannot have two foreign policies: one in opposition and another in power,” he said.

Pahalgam Case: Pahalgam case: NIA seeks China’s help to trace GoPro cam info | India News

Pahalgam case: NIA seeks China's help to trace GoPro cam info

NEW DELHI: A special NIA court hearing the Pahalgam terror attack case in Jammu has issued a letter rogatory to the authorities concerned in China, seeking assistance to trace the supply chain and end-user details of a GoPro Hero Black 12 camera seized as part of the NIA investigation. Its purpose is to establish details such as pre-attack reconnaissance, movement and operational preparation of the Pakistani terror module behind the deadly strike that killed 26 people, including 25 tourists, on April 22, 2025.Sources said though the GoPro camera was body-mounted by one of the three Pakistani terrorists to capture the attack as it happened, it yielded no footage when seized from the attackers tracked and killed in Dachigam forest during Operation Mahadev months after the attack. The GoPro Hero 12 Black camera remains a crucial evidence nevertheless, as its supply chain can help establish details like reconnaissance of the attack site and the route and movement of the attackers.Earlier, a lawful notice was issued by NIA to the manufacturer of the camera, GoPro B V, seeking details of its supply chain and activation. “In its response, GoPro B V has informed that the said camera was supplied to AE Group International Limited, a distributor based in the People’s Republic of China; and the camera was activated on Jan 30, 2024, at Dongguan, People’s Republic of China,” NIA said.“The manufacturer has further stated that it does not possess downstream transaction details or end-user records of the device. The activation, initial use and commercial trail of the said device lie within the territorial jurisdiction of the People’s Republic of China, and the information necessary to trace the purchaser, end-user and associated technical records can only be obtained through judicial assistance of the Chinese authorities,” as per the application filed before the NIA court. The court said since India and China are not signatories to a mutual legal assistance treaty, assistance as requested can be sought under UNTOC, as both nations have ratified UNTOC.Ministry of home affairs has given its concurrence for the issuance of the letter rogatory to China for seeking legal assistance in investigation of the case.

Most importantly, in 2021 by-election we got much more votes than Congress in Demow. Our party workers were highly enthusiastic this time. So this first list of Congress is a major disappointment for our party” Raijor Dal spokesperson Rasel Hussain told TOI.
