BENGALURU: Scientists from Isro’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) have identified a promising landing zone in the rugged south polar region of the Moon for India’s first lunar sample return mission, Chandrayaan-4. A detailed terrain study using images from the Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter High Resolution Camera (OHRC) has shortlisted a one-square-kilometre patch near Mons Mouton as the safest option for touchdown. The study, carried out by Amitabh, K Suresh, Ajay K Prashar, Kannan V Iyer, Abdul S, Shweta Verma Trivedi and Nitant Dube, has been accessed by TOI.Chandrayaan-4 will be Isro’s most complex lunar mission. The spacecraft will include a propulsion module, a descender module, an ascender module, a transfer module and a re-entry module. The descender and ascender stack must soft-land on the Moon, collect samples and launch them back to lunar orbit for return to Earth .Selecting the right site is crucial. Engineers must ensure gentle local slopes, adequate sunlight for at least 11-12 days, clear radio visibility to Earth, and minimal hazards such as craters and boulders. The lander design limits the acceptable slope to about 10° and requires boulders smaller than 0.32 metres .Earlier assessments based on coarser data had highlighted several candidate areas between 84° and 90° south latitude. The new work focused on five zones around Mons Mouton, analysing them with sharper OHRC stereo images at 32-centimetre resolution. One site was discarded because it lay in permanent shadow .Researchers generated digital elevation models at a fine grid of 0.32 metres and studied terrain undulations, illumination patterns and hazard distribution. Four locations, labelled MM-1, MM-3, MM-4 and MM-5, were compared on parameters such as mean slope, height range and the number of safe landing grids of 24 by 24 metres .Among them, the MM-4 area — at latitude minus 84.289° and longitude 32.808° — emerged as the front-runner. It showed the lowest hazard level at 9.89%, an average slope of 5° and the highest count of 568 safe grids. The region also offered favourable illumination and limited shadowing from nearby terrain .Other sites carried higher risks. MM-1 and MM-3 recorded hazard levels above 12%, while MM-5 provided only 72 safe grids within the target area. Elevations across the sites ranged from 4,800 to over 6,100 metres, reflecting the broken topography of the lunar south pole .Scientists say the analysis demonstrates how high-resolution imaging can guide precise landing decisions. The OHRC data allowed them to map craters, boulders and slopes with a clarity not available during earlier missions .If approved by the landing site selection committee, the MM-4 patch will host India’s first attempt to bring back pieces of the Moon. Success would place Isro among a small group of space agencies capable of returning extraterrestrial samples, opening a new chapter in the country’s planetary exploration programme.

NEW DELHI: India’s auto component industry is set for a significant boost following the India-US trade deal, with the agreement providing preferential tariff treatment for Indian auto parts exports, including zero-duty access for some products. The joint statement said India will receive a preferential tariff rate quota for automotive parts currently covered under US national security tariffs, creating a pathway for Indian exporters to access the US market at lower or zero duties. They had previously been affected due to steep tariffs with certain auto components facing duties up to 50%. Vikrampati Singhania, president of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA), said the move signals a clear intent to strengthen bilateral manufacturing and supply chains. “These measures will lead to enhanced export competitiveness, deepen technology collaboration, and reinforce India’s role as a trusted partner in resilient global automotive supply chains.” Auto component maker Uno Minda said the agreement opens a new phase of export-led growth for the sector. “For Uno Minda, this opens up compelling opportunities to further scale our footprint, strengthen supply-chain agility and expand our contribution to the US market while proudly reinforcing India’s position as a world-class manufacturing hub,” said Ravi Mehra, MD at Uno Minda. Tenneco India said the reduction in US tariffs will significantly improve the cost competitiveness of India-made components. “This will significantly enhance the cost competitiveness of our premium products like shock absorbers and exhaust systems in the US market, positioning us to grow our presence, scale volumes, and strengthen integration within the supply networks of American OEMs,” said Arvind Chandra, whole-time director and CEO, Tenneco India. During the first week of the month, net buying by foreign funds was Rs 8,129 crore, data from NSDL showed. In the previous month they had withdrawn close to Rs 36,000 crore from the market. An important factor that changed the market sentiment was the appreciation in rupee from a record low of 91.72 to the dollar to 90.30, Vijayakumar said. Even though rupee weakened again to close the week at 90.70, the currency is expected to stabilise and gradually appreciate to below 90 to the dollar by end March 2026, he said. “This has the potential to trigger more (foreign) inflows into India. However, a lot will depend on how the AI trade pans out.“

Iran has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi to more than seven additional years in prison, according to her supporters and lawyer. The development comes as Mohammadi has reportedly been on a hunger strike since early February.Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, confirmed the verdict on social media, saying she had received multiple sentences on separate charges Iranian authorities have not publicly acknowledged the ruling so far, as per news agency AP.Mohammadi, a long-time critic of Iran’s human rights record, is already behind bars and has spent much of the past decade in and out of prison for her activism.

Details of the new sentence

According to Nili, Mohammadi has been sentenced to six years in prison for “gathering and collusion to commit crimes” and an additional one-and-a-half years for propaganda-related charges, reported news agency AFP. She has also been handed a two-year travel ban.Separately, Mohammadi has been ordered into internal exile for two years to the city of Khosf in South Khorasan province. Under Iranian law, prison sentences are served concurrently, meaning the longest term applies.Nili said the verdict is not final and can still be appealed. He also expressed hope that, given her health condition, Mohammadi could be temporarily released on bail to receive medical treatment.

Hunger strike and health concerns

Supporters say Mohammadi began a hunger strike on February 2, according to AP. Her health has been a recurring concern. In December 2024, she was briefly released for three weeks on medical grounds following surgery that involved tumour removal and a bone graft, her lawyer had said at the time.Despite her detention, Mohammadi has continued to protest from inside prison, including staging demonstrations in the prison yard and undertaking previous hunger strikes.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi

NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday escalated his attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging a “deeper connection” between Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, and hinting at possible charges of “rashtra-droh” (treason) if the Congress leader failed to clarify his past visit to Pakistan.Addressing a press conference ahead of the assembly elections, Sarma claimed that Gogoi had undertaken a “very confidential visit” to Pakistan in December 2013 and was believed to have undergone “some kind of training” during his 10-day stay.

“He stayed there for 10 days. Strangely, Gogoi was digitally silent and no social media post was made. We suspect he went through some kind of training in that period,” the chief minister said.Sarma further alleged that after returning from Pakistan and later becoming an MP, Gogoi asked questions in the Lok Sabha on military preparedness, security matters, defence hardware, nuclear plants, espionage and the Kashmir conflict. “A first-time MP asking such confidential questions, how can it not be linked to his Pakistan visit?” he asked.“If Gogoi cannot come out clean on his Pakistan stay, then charges of ‘rashtra-droh’ (treason) will have to be imposed on him,” Sarma added.Allegations over foreign linksThe chief minister also alleged that Colburn had worked with LEAD Pakistan, an organisation run by Sheikh, before moving to India, and that her salary continued to be paid by Sheikh even while she was working in the country. “But her salary continued to be paid by Sheikh,” Sarma said.He claimed that LEAD Pakistan sent money to LEAD India, which then paid Colburn “bypassing FCRA regulations”, and suggested that special permission might have been obtained during the UPA government’s tenure. “Pakistani agencies cannot donate to an Indian entity as it’s an enemy nation. Probably special permission was obtained in UPA time to pay Colburn,” he said.Sarma also alleged that Colburn gathered information from Intelligence Bureau sources related to climate action after Narendra Modi came to power and sent a “45-page report” to Sheikh. “Colburn got information from IB sources about climate action after Narendra Modi came to power. NEW DELHI: Researchers have confirmed the discovery of a new species of dragonfly, Lyriothemis keralensis, from the low-lying coastal regions of Kerala. Commonly called the Slender Bombardier, the species was formally identified after more than ten years of research, according to news agency PTI.The breakthrough study was carried out by a team led by Dr Dattaprasad Sawant, Dr A Vivek Chandran, Renjith Jacob Mathews and Dr Krushnamegh Kunte, and has been published in the International Journal of Odonatology.

Initially mistaken for a known species

The dragonfly was first spotted in 2013 in the Varappetty area of Kothamangalam. At the time, scientists believed it belonged to Lyriothemis acigastra, also known as the Little Bloodtail, a species commonly found in northeast India.Detailed examination in later years, however, showed that the Kerala specimen had distinct physical and behavioural features, prompting researchers to classify it as a separate species.

Distinct physical features set it apart

According to the research paper, Lyriothemis keralensis differs from the Little Bloodtail in several ways. It has a slimmer abdomen along with a unique tail and genital structure.Male dragonflies have a deep blood-red abdomen with black markings, while females are slightly broader and display yellow and black colouring. The species measures about three centimetres in length and was also confirmed through the study of century-old museum specimens.

Thrives in plantations, not forests

Unlike many dragonfly species, Lyriothemis keralensis does not inhabit protected forest areas. Instead, it thrives in human-modified irrigation landscapes such as pineapple and rubber plantations.Researchers found it mainly in shaded canals and seasonal pools within agricultural land, making its habitat preference unusual and highly specific.

Call to rethink conservation priorities

Researcher Vivek Chandran stressed the need to broaden conservation efforts beyond forests. “It is crucial that our actions for the preservation of biodiversity do not focus solely on forests,” he said, as quoted by PTI, adding that odonates occupy a wide range of habitats, including human-dominated areas.The species appears during the monsoon season and retreats once the rains subside. Since its survival depends on fragile microhabitats outside national parks, researchers warned that its future rests largely on human responsibility and the protection of local ecosystems within farmlands.
