US and Bangladesh strike new trade deal — key terms of the agreement

The United States and Bangladesh on Monday finalised the United States–Bangladesh Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, wrapping up negotiations as both countries stepped in to strengthen bilateral economic ties. Under the revised framework, Bangladeshi exports to the American market will attract a 19% tariff, marginally lower than the 20% imposed in August and significantly below the original reciprocal rate of 37%. The agreement was signed by US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Bangladesh’s Adviser for Commerce, Textiles and Jute, and Civil Aviation and Tourism, Sheikh Bashir Uddin, in the presence of Bangladesh Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman and Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch.

Key terms of the agreement

  1. Perks for Bangladesh: Washington will reduce the reciprocal tariff imposed under Executive Order 14257 to 19% on Bangladeshi goods. In addition, selected products listed in Annex III of Executive Order 14346 will qualify for a zero-tariff rate. The United States has committed to creating a mechanism under which certain textile and apparel products from Bangladesh can qualify for a zero reciprocal tariff rate. Under this arrangement, a yet-to-be-finalised volume of garments and textile imports from Bangladesh will be allowed to enter the US at the reduced rate. The permitted volume will depend on Bangladesh’s imports of American textile inputs, such as US-produced cotton and man-made fibres, effectively tying the benefit to the level of US exports.
  2. Perks for US: Bangladesh will grant wide preferential entry to US industrial and agricultural products, covering chemicals, medical devices, machinery, automobiles and components, ICT equipment, energy supplies, soy items, dairy, beef, poultry, nuts and fruit.
  3. Both governments will seek to remove Bangladeshi non-tariff barriers affecting trade and investment. Measures include recognising vehicles meeting US federal safety and emission rules, accepting US Food and Drug Administration certificates and prior approvals for pharmaceuticals and medical devices, and ending import restrictions or licensing on US remanufactured products and parts.
  4. Bangladesh will enable trusted cross-border data flows, support a lasting WTO ban on customs duties for electronic transmissions, rely on science- and risk-based systems for safe American food and farm imports, open up the insurance sector, digitise customs and adopt sound regulatory practices.
  5. Commitments have also been made on labour. Bangladesh will act to uphold internationally recognised rights, prohibit imports made through forced or compulsory labour, amend legislation to secure freedom of association and collective bargaining, and tighten enforcement.
  6. Dhaka has pledged to maintain strong environmental safeguards, implement its environmental laws, improve trade facilitation at the border and tackle market distortions linked to subsidies and state-owned firms. Furthermore, the South Asian giant has committed to reinforce and apply comprehensive anti-corruption legislation.
  7. On intellectual property, Bangladesh will pursue tougher protection and enforcement, including ratifying or joining certain global treaties. It will also introduce provisions on geographical indications aimed at ensuring continued US market access, particularly for producers of cheese and meat that use common names.
  8. The two countries intend to align more closely on economic and national security matters, strengthening supply chains and innovation while working together against unfair trade practices, duty evasion, export control risks and by exchanging information on inbound investment.
  9. American agencies such as the Export-Import Bank and the US International Development Finance Corporation may, where eligible and in accordance with law, look at backing investment in priority Bangladeshi sectors alongside US private firms.
  10. The two countries also acknowledged recent and upcoming commercial agreements spanning agriculture, energy and technology. These include the procurement of aircraft, the purchase of around $3.5 billion worth of American agricultural commodities such as wheat, soy, cotton and corn, and energy imports estimated to be valued at $15 billion over the next 15 years.

Both sides said they would proceed promptly, following their respective internal processes, to complete formalities required for the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade to take effect.

Anthropic’s Safeguards Research Team head Mrinank Sharma has resigned. Mrinank shared a long resignation note on X, formerly Twitter. In the note, Mrinank said that today (February 9) is his last day. “Today is my last day at Anthropic. I resigned. Here is the letter I shared with my colleagues, explaining my decision,” wrote Mrinank in the X post. Anthropic announced its ‘Safeguards Research Team’ in February 2025. Introducing the team in a blog post, the company said, “Following the release of Constitutional Classifiers, we are excited to announce Anthropic’s new Safeguards Research Team. We’ll be focusing on topics such as jailbreak robustness, automated red teaming, and developing effective monitoring techniques, both for model misuse and misalignment. The team is currently led by Mrinank Sharma, and current members are Erik Jones, Meg Tong, Jerry Wei, Euan Ong, Alwin Peng, Ted Sumers, Taesung Lee, Giulio Zhou, and Scott Goodfriend.”In the long note addressed to his colleagues at Anthropic, Mrinank Sharma shared his journey at the company. “I arrived in San Francisco two years ago, having wrapped up my PhD and wanting to contribute to AI safety,” he wrote. The letter also talks about the dilemma that he seems to be facing and that may have triggered his decision to leave the company. MUMBAI: Call it a fad or not, but brands are pushing protein-infused products into retail shelves-many Indians whose regular diets lack sufficient doses of protein are increasingly becoming health-conscious and companies are sniffing an opportunity here. Think about McDonald’s protein slices to go with burgers, local startup Phab’s protein bhel bars, or ITC’s high protein atta.American coffeehouse giant Starbucks doesn’t want to miss out on the trend that seems to be finding takers. The firm has started lacing cold foams with protein-for an extra Rs 50, people can get an additional layer of protein added to the cold foam that comes with iced drinks.

“It’s not a promo or one-time launch. It’s a menu architecture. We want to become a lifestyle brand where we can integrate seamlessly into consumers’ wellness.“Coffee is not just about getting a caffeine kick now and protein is no longer gym culture. It has become a daily routine,” Adrit Mishra, chief operating officer at Tata Starbucks told TOI.”A cup of iced coffee already includes anywhere between 20-25 grams of protein and topping it up with a protein-infused cold foam will give a consumer another 11-15 grams of protein depending on the portion size of the drink. Starbucks is also offering people the choice of cold foam with zero added sugar as Indians become more inclined towards cutting down on sugar levels. The product is targeted at consumers who are mindful of their health but do not want to compromise on their regular lifestyle, Mishra said. India has traditionally been a tea-drinking nation but coffee is now becoming more common in households and coffeehouses are propagating coffee culture. A cup of branded coffee is still aspirational for many and people are willing to get a dose of hot coffee while heading to work or drinking a cold brew after hitting the gym.Starbucks plans to extend the protein foam to hot brews as well in about six months or so besides exploring the idea of adding the feature to more categories going ahead, said Mishra. Outside India, the company has rolled out protein lattes and cold foam drinks only across its stores in the US and Canada. In India, Starbucks has partnered with home-grown D2C protein brand SuperYou for the launch across more than 500 stores here. Young working professionals, frequent travellers and consumers with a focused fitness regime have tried the protein cold foams, Mishra said.“Our airport stores are seeing good traction,” added Mishra. Protein in India is no longer a trend, people realise that it’s an important macronutrient and it’s also culturally relevant, said Nikunj Biyani, SuperYou’s co-founder.

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is held every year for 15 days, usually during the first two weeks of February, in Faridabad. It is organised by the Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism, in collaboration with the Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture, and External Affairs. One of the largest crafts fairs in the world, the mela has been held since 1987 and will turn 40 next year.I have been visiting the fair for years now and have seen it in many forms. There were years when it felt quite lacklustre, and then there were years when I skipped it altogether because it seemed repetitive. But this year was different. The fair felt not only far more widespread but also noticeably more international and diverse. It was well-decorated and beautifully planned. Despite being extremely crowded, there seemed to be enough space for people to do what they liked. Yes, there were areas that drew heavier crowds than usual—especially the food courts—but even those felt relatively well managed, with food counters and joints spread across multiple locations.

The mela that turned into a tragedy

However, the most attractive part of the fair was definitely the rides. They added an additional charm with their giant lights, speed, and energy. Around the rides, there was almost another mela of its own—food vendors everywhere, families and groups standing around, people laughing, chatting, and watching their loved ones enjoy the rides. There was a festive warmth in simply standing there and soaking it all in.This Saturday, I reached the mela late, towards the evening. After loitering around for a while, I stood at the edge of the stairs, watching the mesmerising rides. As I stood there, trying to click pictures from different angles, I couldn’t quite find the right one. The rides appeared too far. I climbed down the stairs, asking my husband and son to stay back till I returned. The rides were in a separate portion of the ground which was an extension of the mela. I walked a few steps towards the fateful Tsunami ride and looked around for a few minutes soaking in the festivities, the lights and the infectious joy around. I turned back and went a few steps ahead to position myself at a spot from where I could click the photos and then suddenly there was a deafening sound—almost like thunder. There was a band playing nearby, and it felt as though the sound was swallowed by the chaos, as if the wind had swept everything back.There was sudden confusion. I didn’t know what exactly had happened. After recovering from the shock, I moved a little closer and saw people running to help, some trying to hold the ride with their bare hands to allow people to escape. The ride carrying 18-19 people had crashed down! What! I was transfixed for a few moments; I did not know what to do. My first instinct was to run back, but then I could not ignore the loud cries of help. I ran forward, but an already assembled crowd stopped my way...and then there was another thud, followed by massive shrieks. I was close enough to notice blood and loud cries of pain. Someone pushed me from behind, and I retreated. But stood trembling for I don’t know how long.For a while, I couldn’t comprehend what had actually happened. It took time to understand. The ride I had been trying to capture at the perfect angle had collapsed. I never got that perfect shot—and I wondered how people manage to film accidents in moments like these.Later, I learned that a total of 13 people were injured in the swing collapse, and one person—an SHO who rushed in to help-lost his life when the second part of the swing collapsed. People at the fair said that the swing had earlier been banned because a similar accident had occurred years ago, and that it was being operated again for the first time when this happened. The vendor is based in Himachal Pradesh and had been chosen to run it.What stayed with me was not just the noise or the fear, but the sudden shift-from celebration to tragedy in a matter of seconds. One moment, people were laughing under bright lights; the next, they were running, screaming, trying to save strangers. The fair continued around us, but something had irrevocably changed. I walked away knowing I had witnessed not just an accident, but the fragile line between joy and disaster. Life changes…completely…in just a few moments!

SBI shares soar! State Bank of India stock jumps nearly 7% today — Should you buy or sell?

SBI shares today: State Bank of India’s shares soared to record high on Monday, after the lender turned in its strongest quarterly profit on record for the October–December period of FY26. The stock climbed up to 6.7% to hit Rs 1,137 on the BSE. Last week, SBI reported standalone net profit of Rs 21,028 crore for Q3FY26, up 24% as compared to a year ago. The robust figures came on the back of loan growth and stable margins.On 11:54 am, the SBI stock was trading at 1137.80, up 71 points or 6.7% on the BSE. Income from core lending activity stayed firm. Net Interest Income rose 9% year-on-year to Rs 45,190 crore. Operating profit, calculated before provisions and contingencies, advanced 40% from the same period last year to Rs 32,862 crore, reflecting improved leverage in the business. Brokerages tracking the lender largely maintained positive recommendations, with many highlighting growth in loans, steady profitability and comfort on asset quality.

Should you buy or sell?

Motilal Oswal maintained a ‘Buy’ view and lifted its target price to Rs 1,300, implying a 22% upside from current levels. The brokerage highlighted broad-based strength in performance, helped by business growth, expansion in margins and stable asset quality, as reported by ET. Nomura also kept a ‘Buy’ rating, with a target of Rs 1,235. It pointed to resilient margins, rising 2 basis points sequentially and comparing well with peers. Loan growth of 16% year-on-year was seen ahead of competitors even with the bank’s sizeable base, and core profitability metrics continued to exceed those of peers. JM Financial also reiterated its ‘Buy’ recommendation and set a target price of Rs 1,250. It pointed to diversified growth, margins holding up in the face of deposit pressure, leading asset quality and sizeable provision buffers, all of which provide better visibility on earnings and balance-sheet resilience. A return on assets of around 1% or more and a mid-teen return on equity profile, justifies a premium relative to past public sector bank valuations, according to the brokerage. Nuvama Institutional Equities too remained positive, raising its target price to Rs 1,250 while maintaining its Buy rating. The bomb threat message stated that “Delhi will become Khalistan,” police said.School premises were promptly evacuated, and extensive anti-sabotage checks were carried out to ensure the safety of students and staff.Police said no suspicious objects were found during the searches. Investigations are currently underway to trace the origin of the threatening emails and identify those responsible.According to sources, the email was sent at around 7.22 am. The sender claimed that an explosion would take place at approximately 1.11 pm on Monday. The message also alleged that Parliament would be targeted at 1.11pm on February 13.This is not the first such incident. Last month, several schools across Delhi received similar bomb threat emails, leading to widespread panic and heightened security arrangements across the city.Sources further revealed that the latest email claimed that blasts would occur at three to four schools in Chandigarh.

NEW DELHI: Three bodies, including those of an elderly man and a woman, were found in a car parked near Peeragarhi flyover in west Delhi on Sunday afternoon, sending police scrambling to find out whether it was a case of triple suicide or homicide.Responding to a call around 3.50pm informing them that three persons sitting in a car weren’t responding and appeared unconscious, police found the vehicle near one of the service lanes of the flyover. On forcing the car open, cops found all three dead and a strong smell of a “poisonous substance” in the vehicle. The car’s occupants were identified as Randhir Singh (76), a resident of Baprola village, Shiv Naresh Singh (47), also from Baprola, and Laxmi Devi (40). Police said Randhir Singh was found on the driver’s seat, while the other two were sitting on the rear seat. The car belongs to one of the victims, police said.Cops said crime and forensic teams were called to examine the vehicle and the surrounding area. Evidence was collected from the spot, and documents recovered from the car helped establish the identities of the victims. Police subsequently contacted Randhir Singh’s family, and a relative reached the spot to identify him and Shiv Naresh, who are not related but acquainted. However, the relative could not clarify Laxmi Devi’s connection to the two men.Cops said cash, mobile phones and jewellery worn by the woman were found intact in the car. Forensic experts also found a soft drink bottle in the car and have sent it for forensic examination to determine whether a toxic substance was mixed in it.Police said the bodies had been sent for postmortem, and the exact cause of death will be known only after the report comes in and a detailed forensic analysis is conducted.
