According to an official cited by ET, states have been asked to speed up permissions for laying pipelines and to do away with road restoration and related fees imposed by local authorities. The aim is to accelerate infrastructure rollout and make it easier for households to adopt PNG.As part of the relief measures, the petroleum and natural gas regulatory board has waived imbalance charges for city gas companies, shippers and consumers “as a temporary relief measure in light of the extraordinary circumstances” due to ongoing Iran war. These charges are typically imposed when the actual quantity of gas taken or injected by a shipper differs from the amount scheduled on the pipeline network.Officials said the Centre is trying to overcome “structural constraints” that have slowed the growth of PNG connections. Sujata Sharma, joint secretary at the ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, outlined a series of steps proposed to states in a presentation shared on Monday.These include directing states to:

  • Issuing deemed permission for pending applications for laying city gas distribution (CGD) pipelines
  • Mandating approval of all new CGD permissions within 24 hours
  • Waiving road restoration and permission charges levied by state or local authorities
  • Relaxing working hours and working seasons
  • Appointing state nodal officers for support, coordination and faster implementation

Meanwhile, the gap between LPG and PNG usage remains wide. India has around 10 million active PNG consumers, compared with about 330 million LPG users.Hospitality and consumers are already feeling the strain of LPG-related disruptions. The Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India) (HRAWI) has approached the Maharashtra government seeking an extension or staggered payment of annual licence fees, saying a commercial LPG shortage has forced several establishments to shut. In Patna, residents have flagged delayed deliveries and cases where cylinders are marked as delivered but not received, prompting the district administration to step up monitoring, even as officials maintain there is no shortage. The impact is also visible in other industries. In Gujarat’s Morbi, around 430 ceramic units are set to remain shut for at least three weeks after the West Asia conflict disrupted gas supplies essential for manufacturing, according to an industry representative.

NEW DELHI: Airlines will now have to offer at least 60% seats “on any flight” without any selection charge and passengers travelling on the same PNR — who are usually family members or the travelling in a group — will need to be seated together, “preferably on adjacent seats,” The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Wednesday issued these passenger-friendly directives, in a bid to address one of the biggest grouses of air travellers.Now, airlines have been asked to make available “minimum 60% of seats on any flight to be allocated free of charge to ensure fair access” and that “passengers travelling on the same PNR to be seated together, preferably on adjacent seats.How this is implemented remains to be seen as pre-booked seats can affect availability of passengers travelling on same PNR being seated together. The issue of people travelling in groups being seated separately if they do not pay extra for seat selection has been irking travellers across the world and not just in India. The US, for instance, has been grappling with this issue for years.Then US President Joe Biden had on February 5, 2023, said on X (former Twitter): “Some airlines charge extra to pick your seat, including for parents who want to sit next to their child on a plane. Congress should pass the Junk Fee Protection Act so we can crack down on these fees and give hard-working Americans just a little bit more breathing room.” In April 2024, the DGCA had mandated that airlines will have to ensure that young children are seated with at least one of their parents or guardians on flights without being required to pay extra for seat selection charge if travelling on the same PNR (booking reference). Following numerous complaints from passengers travelling in groups about being seated separately — especially from their children — if they choose not to pay extra for seat selection, the DGCA had two years back issued this directive to airlines: “Airlines shall ensure that children upto the age of 12 years are allocated seats with at least one of their parents/guardians, who are travelling on the same PNR and a record of the same shall be maintained.”Going a step ahead for protecting consumer rights, the regulator has now directed that “carriage of sports equipment and musical instruments (should) be facilitated in a transparent and passenger-friendly manner, subject to applicable safety and operational regulations. Airlines shall also bring out clear, transparent policies for carriage of pets.” The DGCA has called for “strict adherence to passenger rights framework, particularly in cases of delays, cancellations and denied boarding; prominent display of passenger rights across airline websites, mobile applications, booking platforms, and airport counters; and clear communication of passenger entitlements in regional languages to ensure wider accessibility and awareness.”In a statement issued Wednesday, the aviation ministry said it “remains committed to enhancing passenger experience, ensuring transparency, reducing grievances and upholding the highest standards of safety across the aviation ecosystem.”

KANPUR: Former Samajwadi Party MLA Vijay Singh’s two sons, Avinash Singh alias Sikki and Vikki, were seriously injured in a massive explosion that occurred at his residence in Mohalla Machratta, Farrukhabad, around 7:30 pm on Tuesday.Vijay Singh is serving a life sentence in Varanasi jail after being convicted for the murder of BJP leader and former energy minister Brahmdatt Dwivedi. His wife and former Palika Adhyaksh, Damyanti Singh, claimed that someone had orchestrated the incident, which injured her sons and several others, besides shattering the windowpanes of the four-storey building and scattering valuable belongings kept in the rooms. Besides MLS’s son, those injured include Bhaiyalal of Jasmai, Rashu of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, Ishu Chaurasiya, Bhaiya Lal Chauhan, and another person identified as Rashu. Rashu was admitted to Lohia Hospital, while the other injured were taken to a nursing home located at Sahabganj Chauraha. Vijay Singh’s sons were also undergoing treatment at a private nursing home. Meanwhile, Bhaiya Lal was referred to a higher medical centre in Kanpur. District magistrate Ashutosh Kumar Dwivedi and superintendent of police Aarti Singh, along with other senior officials, reached the spot after receiving the information. Aarti Singh said, “The injured have been hospitalised, and further investigations are underway to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion. Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) and forensic teams are conducting the investigation.” BJP leader and former energy minister Brahmdatt Dwivedi, a resident of Senapat, Farrukhabad, was shot dead on the night of Feb9, 1997. In this case, on May 27, 2017, Vijay Singh was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. Since then, he has been in jail and is currently lodged in Varanasi.

NEW DELHI: Congress Tuesday said the governing BJP employed “money power, threats and misuse of returning officer” to win the Haryana Rajya Sabha election at any cost, as it slammed the rival for again “exposing its anti-Ambedkar character” by trying to steal the parliament membership of grassroots Dalit activist Karamvir Boudh.After scraping a victory in the Haryana Rajya Sabha polls, despite cross voting by five Congress MLAs and four of its votes declared invalid, Congress MP Deepender Hooda said BJP had appointed Gujarat deputy CM as the observer for the polls which showed that the BJP leadership wanted to win the election irrespective of the tactic used.“BJP tried to murder democracy in the dark of night. All the four votes declared as invalid were completely valid. They had even been put in the tray of valid votes by an official. But this was done by a blatantly partisan RO (returning officer) to contrive the numbers in favour of BJP,” he told a press conference with Congress’s scheduled castes department chairman Rajendra Pal Gautam.Deepender said Congress will take strong action against the MLAs who cross voted and betrayed the party, adding that people will not forgive the legislators who betrayed their mandate.He said BJP wanted to engineer cross-voting by nine or seven Congress legislators while securing two votes of INLD. He said INLD, “which is the B-team of BJP”, declared its decision to abstain from polling barely half an hour before the voting ended, because it was sure that Congress was winning the election.Deepender said when BJP’s “game of pressure and money” failed, BJP employed its third strategy of fixing the play through RO. “RO worked as a BJP agent,” he added.
