Don’t line up, state has enough LPG stock, say officials | Mumbai News

Mumbai: The supply of petrol, diesel and domestic LPG cylinders in Maharashtra is adequate and there is no shortage, state officials emphasised on Monday. Reiterating civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal’s announcements during the recently concluded legislature session, they said a state-level control room has been set up for complaints over LPG supply, along with a WhatsApp helpline (9769919221), and police protection is being given to LPG vehicles, gas agencies and distribution staff.Officials appealed to the public not to queue up for LPG cylinders and to only book them online to be delivered at home. There are 3.5 crore LPG consumers. Average daily refills since April 3 were 5.8 crore compared to 5.9 crore in Jan, they said. But, there is a 25-day booking restriction period in urban areas to ensure equitable supply. Once an order is placed, the cylinder will be delivered in 3-4 days, officials said. “Maharashtra has LPG stocks of 27,000 tonne, which can last three days. And we have domestic production capability to meet 45-50% of the state’s requirement,” said state rationing controller Chandrakant Dange. For migrant labourers, 5kg refill cylinders are being provided, with around 27,600 supplied per day. Officials reiterated that it is mandatory for citizens and commercial establishments to apply for piped natural gas (PNG) in areas where it is available or where lines are being laid. “In such areas, the supply of LPG will be discontinued from June 30,” said Dange. He said this mainly applies to urban areas and not slum areas located in regions where PNG lines cannot be laid. The state had 42.3 lakh PNG connections till Feb; the number rose by 73,000 last month. The state has issued directions to expedite connections, including assuming deemed permission for pending applications with authorities like BMC and public works and irrigation departments. Also, pipelines can be laid 24 hours. On action against black marketing, the state has seized 21 transport vehicles, filed 53 FIRs and arrested 36 persons. It has seized 3,628 LPG cylinders and 71,565kg of LPG. The seizures are worth Rs 2.4 crore, officials said. Officials said the state govt has asked the Centre to increase its stock of 5kg LPG refills by 25% to provide for migrant labourers and increase its quota of LPG for autos. The state received 3,744 kilolitres of kerosene from the Centre and distribution through fair price shops this week in all districts in the state. Officials said a state-level committee is monitoring the supply and distribution of fuel and LPG and district committees have been set up to ensure there is no disruption.

BMC starts testing low-cost hyperlocal air quality sensors for Mumbai | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Co-location studies to calibrate low-cost air quality sensors with existing reference grade monitoring stations have commenced in the city as part of the MANAS (Mumbai Air Network for Advanced Sciences) project. Under the project, the BMC along with IIT-Kanpur will install 75 low-cost air quality monitoring sensors, for hyperlocal monitoring of air quality in the city. The BMC hopes to complete installation of all sensors before monsoon. The sensors will help the civic body in hyperlocal level decision making on air pollution.Civic sources said the devices are being tested and fine-tuned. “Since Mumbai is a coastal city, temperature and humidity will affect the functioning of the sensors. Therefore, the sensors have to be tested and fine-tuned accordingly. We are also installing about 10 of these sensors near our CAAQMS (continuous ambient air quality monitoring systems) stations,” said a civic official. “The sensors will be installed at BMC buildings including ward offices, hospitals, schools and other civic structures across the city. We hope to get granular data from the same,” the official added. Installation of the air quality monitoring units is expected to cost around Rs 13 crore. “The city will be divided into equal-sized grids of roughly eight square kilometres and the sensor-based air quality monitoring units would be set up at each of these grids. The monitoring units are expected to help BMC in measuring air quality at hyperlocal levels. The monitoring units are expected to measure PM 2.5 and PM 10 primarily,” said an official.Data from the sensors will be linked to a cloud and a dashboard will help the civic body carry out hyperlocal action and mitigation measures. With data from these hyperlocal monitoring units along with that from AQI monitoring units installed at construction sites across the city, the BMC will be able to identify the sources of pollution in real-time. Besides, the BMC will also be able to carry out real-time mitigation action at the local level. Of the 2,700-odd construction sites in the city, about 2,500 have installed AQI monitoring units, of which data from about 2,100 are available on a dashboard for the BMC. The rest of the construction sites are in the process of installing the monitors. The IIT-Kanpur team has set up sensor-based monitoring units across Bihar and part of UP and in several cities.

Mumbai Sailor Death: Dixit Solanki : Mumbai Sailor’s Funeral Delayed Due to Identity Doubts After Missile Attack | Mumbai News

The remains of seafarer Dixit Solanki arrived in Mumbai from Sharjah on Sunday. Solanki died in an alleged missile strike off the Oman coast on March 1

MUMBAI: A day after the charred remains of seafarer Dixit Solanki were brought to Mumbai from Sharjah, his family has refused to perform the last rites, insisting on DNA confirmation to establish his identity. Solanki, who was killed in a suspected missile or drone attack on an oil tanker off the Oman coast during the ongoing West Asia conflict, is believed to be among the first Indian casualties in the maritime tensions. His father, Amratlal Solanki, and sister Mitali received the remains at Mumbai airport early Sunday after securing clearance from Sahar police. Instead of taking the body home to their Kandivli residence, the family transported it directly to JJ Hospital in Byculla, seeking scientific verification. “We want a DNA test and written confirmation,” Mitali said, adding that the family is in touch with authorities. The family’s advocate is expected to move the Bombay high court seeking directions to send samples to the Kalina forensic laboratory, arguing that there is no conclusive proof yet establishing the identity of the remains. Officials from the Directorate General of Shipping and the shipping ministry have maintained that there was only one casualty onboard and identification has already been established. However, the family claims they have not been provided with any documented DNA confirmation. Police said all formalities, including death certificate, embalming certificate and consulate clearances, were completed before the remains were handed over. “The body was released within 30 minutes of arrival after due verification,” an officer said. The case traces back to March 1, when the vessel MT MKD Vyom was hit by an explosive-laden drone boat in the Gulf of Oman. Solanki, who worked as an oiler, died in the blast. The family had earlier approached the high court seeking expeditious repatriation of the remains, citing lack of clarity and delay by authorities. The coffin reached Mumbai within three days of the plea, but the focus has now shifted to confirming identity before the final rites. Adding to the family’s distress, this is the second bereavement in recent months, with Solanki’s mother having passed away just three months ago.
