Mumbai: A 28-year-old woman died after being hit by a tanker at Sindhuwadi Junction on M.G. Road in Chembur (West) on Tuesday evening.The deceased, identified as Yamini Suvare, a resident of Pantnagar, was walking near the junction at around 7.15 pm when the incident occurred. According to traffic police, after the traffic signal turned green, the tanker driver allegedly drove the vehicle in a negligent and reckless manner without ensuring that the road ahead was clear, and struck the pedestrian.Yamini Suvare sustained serious injuries in the accident and died as a result of the impact. Police have taken the tanker driver into custody. A case is in the process of being registered under relevant provisions of law, and further investigation is underway.

Mumbai: Tata Power launched its first 180 kW ultra-fast EV charging station on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway to strengthen intercity electric mobility and make long-distance travel faster and more convenient for electric vehicle users.The charging station went live at Vithal Kamat Restaurant in Durves, Manor, on NH-48. Tata Power said the site marked a key addition to India’s growing EV infrastructure on one of the country’s busiest highway corridors and aimed to reduce charging time while improving the ease and reliability of highway travel for electric vehicle owners.The station is part of Tata Power’s EZ Charge network and supports CCS 2 fast-charging standards, making it compatible with a wide range of electric vehicles. The charger can power vehicles from 20% to 80% in an estimated 15 to 30 minutes, enabling quicker turnarounds for private and commercial users.Tata Power said the location added convenience for travellers, who could use clean restrooms, dining options, and comfortable spaces at the restaurant while their vehicles charged.The company said the launch addressed range anxiety by ensuring reliable and rapid charging access on a major intercity route and reflected its strategy of expanding high-speed charging infrastructure across national highways and mobility corridors.

KALYAN: In a case of negligence, officials of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation allegedly sealed a house from outside for property tax recovery while an ailing woman was asleep inside, trapping her for nearly six hours.The incident occurred at Dattaprasad Apartment on Ambedkar Road in Kalyan. Safina Patel, a tenant, was unwell and resting at home when the civic recovery team arrived. Her son had stepped out for a job interview after locking the grill door, while the main door remained open from inside.Without verifying if anyone was inside, officials sealed the grill door and pasted a notice. Residents tried to alert them about the woman inside, but were allegedly ignored.Patel later woke up and realised she was locked in. The issue came to light after the house owner informed officials, who then rushed to the spot and broke the seal.Congress corporator Kanchan Kulkarni raised the issue in the KDMC general body on Wednesday, alleging that the civic body targets poor residents for tax recovery while failing to act against big industrial defaulters.Kulkarni further claimed that the house owner has an outstanding property tax of Rs 3 lakh, on which the civic body has levied nearly Rs 4 lakh as interest, taking the total dues to around Rs 7 lakh.

Mumbai: A water pipeline leak triggered by ongoing road work disrupted supply across parts of south Mumbai on Wednesday evening.The incident was reported around 5.03 pm on Nepeansea Road, opposite Paradise Building, where construction activity led to damage to an underground water pipeline. As a precautionary measure, the water supply to surrounding areas was immediately shut down.The disruption affected residents of Simla House, Rungtha Lane, Setalvad Lane, Darabsha Lane and parts of Bhulabhai Desai Road during the scheduled evening supply hours between 5 pm and 8.30 pm.Civic officials said the Byculla maintenance team was rushed to the spot to carry out repair work, while ward staff were also mobilised to manage the situation.By 8 pm, the pipeline was temporarily restored and water supply resumed.Further repairs, if required, are likely to be taken up to prevent recurrence, officials added.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra govt has constituted an expert task force to study the impact of social media use among minors and recommend regulatory measures and policy interventions.According to a govt resolution, the task force will examine patterns of social media use among those below 18 years and assess its impact on mental health, behaviour, education and social development. The panel will be chaired by the additional chief secretary/principal secretary of the school education and sports department, with the women and child development department serving as co-chair. Members include senior officials from the public health, information technology, law and judiciary, and home departments.The committee also includes representatives from academia and schools, including the associate dean of commerce and management at the University of Mumbai, the principal of Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai and the headmaster of a Marathi-medium school. Representatives from NGOs, the Indian Psychiatric Society and social media platforms are also part of the panel, while the director of the Directorate of Information Technology will serve as member secretary.Sunita George, principal of Bombay Scottish School, said the nature of online content is already affecting students’ engagement in classrooms. “Quick, highly stimulated content is adversely impacting student attention and is making classroom engagement more challenging. The concern is excessive and unregulated use of social media by young children who are still developing self-control and cognitive control,” she said.George added that schools are increasingly dealing with cyberbullying among students. “Most times it is happening silently in closed groups, in the form of memes and AI-generated deepfakes, which is difficult for schools to track,” she said.The task force has been asked to submit its report with recommendations within three months.

Mumbai: The state govt will issue work orders for the Kamathipura redevelopment project this week and work will begin at the site in two months, said junior home minister Pankaj Bhoyar in the assembly on Wednesday.He said it will be declared a “vital project’ by govt. Bhoyar was replying to a calling attention motion moved by Congress MLA Amin Patel, who said despite several assurances given by govt, the project has been delayed due to red tape.The minister said the cluster redevelopment of cessed and non-cessed buildings in the area will provide relief to 8,000 families. He said the work has experienced a slight delay since the contractor and the developer’s appointment owing to “certain administrative reasons”. —Chaitanya Marpakwar

Mumbai: Mayor Ritu Tawde on Wednesday directed the BMC to submit the concept for all four planned grand entrances to the city and surrounding area development and beautification within the next 15 days. Tawde said priority will be given to the construction of the Airoli gateway, and the other three projects will be pursued on the same model. Preliminary information was gathered from all concerned departments regarding the construction of gateways at Dahisar, Vashi, Airoli, and Mulund. A detailed discussion was also held on the exact location of the gateways, ongoing as well as future planned projects at these sites, and the potential for area development and beautification alongside the gateways. Tawde said the state govt had extended full support to the gateway concept and she is making efforts to raise funds for the project through CSR. — Sanjeev Devasia
