Thane transport to adopt AI to optimise shrinking bus fleet and maximise revenue | Mumbai News

Thane: The Thane municipal transport will start adopting AI in a bid to optimise its already strained fleet of buses, maximise carrying capacity, and earn more revenue in the next fiscal year. The plans mentioned in the Rs 791.86 crore budget presentation for 2026-27, made by municipal transport (TMT) manager Balchandra Behere on Monday, outline that while the volume of passengers on TMT buses has increased, the fleet size hasn’t increased in tandem, due to which they have to optimise the existing fleet, most of which often get stuck on traffic-prone routes within and beyond the city limits, pushing the schedules out of gear. Passengers waiting at the Thane Satis or at various points along the Ghodbunder often complain about queues on certain routes getting longer, while empty buses continue to be plied on other routes due to the present rigid timetable, which not just leaves commuters frustrated but also diverts potential revenue to private bus services and agencies. Field officials said the traffic congestion on several routes delays the arrival of the vehicles at bus stations, due to which the route inspectors are unable to schedule them, which will be managed once the ITMS system is fully in operation. Plus, the shortage on certain revenue-rich routes is due to buses plying on non-profitable routes, and the plans are likely to make the schedules of buses more flexible, which means services will be deployed based on the need. Officials also point out how buses often end up in the workshops due to overcrowding and navigating poor road conditions, especially along the Ghodbunder. “Often, our buses carry 100 passengers at any given time, which is over double the permissible passengers, as the volume of on-road buses has shrunk mainly due to frequent wear and tear of vehicles,” confirmed an official requesting anonymity. “We are working on implementing the Intelligent Traffic Management System for our buses, where we will be able to locate the position of buses, analyse the tickets sold at a particular stretch and time, and accordingly reschedule the next bunch of buses on different routes depending on requirements. This will help us reduce the losses incurred by plying buses on non-profitable routes,” said Behere. Meanwhile, the administration claimed to be getting over 360 buses inducted into the Thane transport fleet by the end of the next fiscal year. “Around 100 air-conditioned electric buses are expected to be inducted into the TMT fleet under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme in 2026-27, while the tendering process is underway for 110 more additional AC e-buses, including 10 double-deckers, and 160 more through the 15th Finance Commission’s NCAP grants,” explained Behere.

RCB’s big changes ahead of IPL: New rules, tribute & squad update

The public interest litigation was moved by T Prabhakaran. As per the fixtures released by the organisers of IPL, two matches are scheduled in MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 3 and April 11, between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Punjab Kings, and CSK and Delhi Capitals.According to the petitioner, since the election process to the Tamil Nadu state Assembly has commenced, the entire state machinery is under the control of the Election Commission of India (ECI), and the entire bureaucratic machinery is geared up to conduct the election and ensure that a free and fair election is conducted.Particularly, the police department, which is tasked with the duty of regular law and order in addition to other work pertaining to the prevention of crimes, will be tasked with election-related work. While so, permitting IPL matches in Chepauk stadium will burden the Chennai police with providing security to the matches and players and maintaining law and order in and around the stadium, he said.“It is also pertinent to note that considering the fact that the matches are viewed worldwide, there is also a viable possibility that the political parties contesting the election may see to it that their supporters gather inside and outside the stadium in order to ensure propaganda for their respective parties and, in such circumstances, the same may result in clashes inside the stadium,” he said. The PIL is likely to be taken up for hearing by the first bench of the court, headed by Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari, on Thursday.

BMC sets 7-day deadline for handover of land reserved for Andheri West fire station | Mumbai News

Mumbai: A long-pending demand by residents for a full-fledged fire station in Andheri West has finally moved towards resolution. For, BMC has initiated steps to secure a plot reserved for the project. In a March 17 communication, the K-West ward’s building proposal department issued a reminder to the private owner of the plot in Ambivli village to hand over the land reserved for a fire brigade in the development plan. The civic body has also asked the project architect to submit the proposal, along with a bank guarantee, to ensure construction of the fire station within 18 months of approval. The letter states that despite a notice issued on March 6, there has been no compliance from the owner. BMC has now set a final seven-day deadline, failing which it warned of escalating the matter to the collector (Mumbai suburban district) to take possession of the reserved land as per due process. The move came amid growing concerns over lack of fire preparedness in Andheri West, a densely populated suburb. While there is a reservation for a fire brigade on a portion of Chitrakoot grounds, the facility has not been developed so far. In case of a fire in the area, fire tenders have to be dispatched from Goregaon or Vile Parle or Marol, causing inordinate delays. Dhaval Shah, a Lokandwala resident, said almost a fire in the area “almost every month”. Amid the BMC action, a fire broke out on the ninth floor of a 22-storey residential building, Meghdoot, in Andheri West on Tuesday. No injuries were reported. First-time corporator Rupesh Savarkar, who has been following up on the issue of an independent fire station in Andheri West, said he had written to the BMC chief last month. “It has come to our notice that the reserved plot is currently being used illegally for purposes, such as a marriage hall, turf activities and shooting studios. Strict and immediate action should be taken against such unauthorised use. A modern, fully equipped fire station on the plot will significantly enhance emergency response capacity and ensure the safety of residents in the entire locality.

CoinDCX founders get bail in fraud case, question mark over cop action | Mumbai News

Thane: A magistrate court on Tuesday granted bail to CoinDCX co-founders Sumit Gupta and Neeraj Khandelwal in a Rs 71.6 lakh cheating case registered at Mumbra police station, observing that no prima facie case was made out against them and that the complainant was cheated by others posing as the cryptocurrency firm’s promoters.Judicial Magistrate (First Class) N B Rathod ordered their release on a personal recognisance (PR) bond of Rs 50,000 each. The co-founders were arrested from Bengaluru last week and were initially remanded to police custody before being sent to judicial custody. Their bail plea was heard after the complainant submitted an affidavit stating that he had recovered the cheated amount from another accused and no longer had any grievance. The court recorded that the investigating officer had no objection to bail and acknowledged that the accused were not present in Mumbra at the time of the alleged offence. It further noted that “some other person, by representing as accused, cheated the informant”, a fact also admitted by the complainant.Questions are now being raised over the manner in which the Mumbra police handled the case. In its official statement, CoinDCX said holding legitimate institutions accountable for actions carried out by bad actors misusing their identity risks setting a damaging precedent for the broader financial ecosystem. CoinDCX said the company and its leadership had no involvement in the fraud and were themselves victims of impersonation. The magistrate’s order referred to documents including proceedings before the Delhi high court, indicating that the company itself has initiated action against unknown persons carrying out fraudulent activities in its name. The FIR names six accused, of whom four remain wanted. The complainant alleged he was lured with promises of high returns through a purported cryptocurrency franchise linked to CoinDCX.

In Maharashtra, tepid response to entrance test for BMS, BBA, BCA yet again | Mumbai News

Mumbai: For the third year in a row, the common entrance test (CET) for BBA, BMS, and BCA has received a lukewarm response from students. For the over one lakh seats available in state colleges, less than 70,000 aspirants have registered so far. The registration deadline has already been extended thrice, with Wednesday now set as the final date.A CET cell official said that this year, they will not conduct an additional CET.Once a popular choice in Mumbai University-affiliated colleges, the BMS programme has lost its sheen following regulatory changes that forced many colleges to change its nomenclature to BCom (Management Studies), said college principals. For the 2024-25 academic session, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) brought these courses under its ambit, classifying them as professional programmes. Since professional courses are regulated by the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional (Regulation of admission and fees) Colleges Act, the state decided to conduct a CET for them. For the past two years, the state has conducted the entrance test twice to accommodate students who missed the first CET. This, however, has delayed admissions until October, when most colleges have already completed their first semester. Not only fewer students wait for the process to conclude, but the delay also disrupts colleges’ academic calendar. Last year, to top the poor response in registrations, over 60% seats in all three courses put together were vacant. “While classes for other courses start in June-July, this one started in October, disrupting our calendar. Teachers have to teach throughout the vacation period,” said a principal.“By the time admission concluded in October, almost six months after the class XII results, students had already settled in courses they had opted for in June-July. There are also a lot of university-regulated courses that are now on offer and are becoming popular. Additionally, many colleges decided to change the nomenclature from Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) to BCom (Management Studies) to avoid AICTE regulation, but they offer almost the same curriculum,” said another principal.Several colleges affiliated to MU, which had earlier decided to go with the AICTE regulation, have now decided to split their divisions into two — one under the university as BCom (Management Studies) and other under AICTE as BMS — to ensure they do not lose out on high-scoring students due to delayed admissions. A teacher said that earlier their BMS admissions closed with students scoring over 90-95% scores in class XII. Now, though students have higher CET scores, their class XII scores are on the lower side, added the teacher.

Sewage and floating waste mix with nullah water and get discharged directly into sea from Gazdhar Bandh pumping station in Mumbai, alleges BMC corporator | Mumbai News

Mumbai: Sewage and floating waste get mixed with nullah water and are discharged directly into the sea from Gazdhar Bandh pumping station in Khar Danda, resulting in severe water pollution and adversely affecting marine life, alleged Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Chinatamani Niwate, while raising the issue in the BMC House on Tuesday.Niwate further claimed that the pumping station is currently non-operational, but BMC’s additional municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar clarified that it is functional. In the BMC House, Niwate said sewage water is discharged directly into sea, along with waste, after flowing through the stormwater drains without undergoing any separation or treatment. This situation gives rise to a host of problems, including fish mortality, adverse effects on fish reproduction, a decline in marine biodiversity, and health risks for the Koli fishing community, Niwate claimed.Other corporators concurred that the livelihood of the fishing community is being adversely affected by the pollution caused due to the discharge of untreated water into the sea.The Gazdhar Bandh pumping station caters to SNDT and main avenue nullah, said a senior civic official, adding: “The contract for operation and maintenance of the trash boom barriers, which is installed on SNDT nullah, ended in Feb, but we had floated the tender much earlier. However, there were issues with the responses to the tender, so we floated the tender again. If we find a suitable bid, we will allot the contract. We will extend the earlier tender and carry out work with the existing contractor.”The senior civic official further said: “We are also installing a trash boom downstream of Gazdhar Bandh pumping station out of CSR, which will take care of the floating waste being discharged into the sea. The work will be completed by May. With regard to sewage getting mixed in the stormwater drains, wherever the sewer merges with nullahs, we will tap the sewage lines and divert them. This will ensure that sewage does not get discharged into the sea.
