NEW DELHI: Young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi has given Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) management and head coach Abhishek Nayar a welcome selection headache with his explosive hitting in a pre-season intra-squad match at Eden Gardens on Friday.Batting at No. 3, the 21-year-old smashed a stunning unbeaten 103 off just 55 balls, an innings laced with nine fours and five sixes, at a strike rate of 187.27. His knock powered Purple Knights to a successful chase of 200 in 19.2 overs.

Shashi Tharoor & Samson’s Redemption Story: From Setbacks to Glory

Three-time IPL champions KKR will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium. With multiple opening options and a revamped squad, Nayar admitted that finalising the right combinations remains KKR’s biggest challenge ahead of the season.Having overhauled their squad after a disappointing 2025 campaign, KKR have added big names such as Cameron Green, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra, but are yet to lock in their batting order.“I’m terrible at predicting what can go wrong, but I can just tell you, I don’t know how the tournament will pan out, but I think initially, it’s making sure we get a fit playing XI come (March) 29th,” Nayar said during the team’s first media interaction of the season.KKR, who finished eighth last year with just five wins, are also set to field a new opening combination in the absence of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Quinton de Kock. The explosive New Zealand duo of Allen and Seifert — who recently put together a record 117-run stand at Eden Gardens to eliminate South Africa in a T20 World Cup semifinal — are among the frontrunners. With Sunil Narine, who also opens, a certainty in the XI, choosing the remaining three overseas players from a pool that includes Green, Allen, Seifert, Ravindra and potentially Matheesha Pathirana presents another selection dilemma.“I think that is a priority right now, making sure we get our combinations right. Because I always believe when you have new combinations in this IPL, it’s about making sure you get your team peaking, yes, everyone in form, but positioning them well enough for them to succeed.“So I think that as a group will be our first challenge and the rest we’ll see as it comes,” Nayar said.KKR’s middle-order struggles last season — where positions 4 to 8 failed to deliver consistently — remain a concern. However, Nayar emphasised that past performances will have little bearing on the upcoming campaign. He cited Sanju Samson as an example, pointing to how the wicketkeeper-batter overcame poor form before the T20 World Cup and went on to play crucial knocks in India’s title-winning run.“We saw that with Sanju Samson in the World Cup as well. It’s about being there at that moment in this tournament. So we’re very hopeful that our players can start strong.“And if you’re in good form, it doesn’t matter what your name is in this format of the game. I think form counts a lot more than what’s happened in the past,” he added.“I’ve always believed T20 cricket is a game of momentum. It’s a game of form. So what happened a year ago doesn’t really matter as to what’s going to happen.“I think something that is going to be really important is the kind of form our boys hit this season. And if everyone is at the peak of their prowess, you expect this team to do really well like they did a year before last. So I honestly believe that it’s not so much of what happened in the past,” he said.

Iran fires 2 ballistic missiles towards US, UK military bases in Diego Garcia

Diego Garcia base (AP photo)

Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, but neither struck the US-UK military base, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing US officials.According to the report, one missile broke apart during flight, while a US warship fired an SM-3 interceptor at the second. It remains uncertain whether the interceptor successfully destroyed its target. The timing of the launch was not disclosed.

‘US B-52 Bombers Seen…’: Iran Slams UK, Exposes ‘Direct Role’ In Trump’s Operations

The White House, the British embassy in Washington, and the Ministry of Defence did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.Diego Garcia is a strategically located atoll in the central Indian Ocean that hosts a key US-UK military facility. Part of the British Indian Ocean Territory, the base is operated primarily by the United States and serves as a critical hub for air and naval operations across a vast region spanning Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The base has played a central role in US military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, providing a launch point for long-range bombers and supporting naval deployments, including submarines and surveillance missions. Its remote location makes it a secure site for pre-positioning military supplies, fuel and equipment, enabling rapid response during regional crises.Diego Garcia is also seen as vital to Washington’s strategic posture in the Indian Ocean, allowing it to monitor and counter activities by rivals such as Iran and China. Its isolation and heavy fortification make it one of the most secure overseas military installations available to the US.

War escalates unhindered

The development comes when the United States is deploying thousands of additional Marines and sailors to West Asia, three US officials said on Friday, as Washington steps up its military presence in the region. While no decision has been taken to send troops into Iran, the reinforcements are aimed at strengthening operational capacity for potential future action, the officials said on condition of anonymity. One official said the USS Boxer, along with two other amphibious assault ships and about 2,500 Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is headed to West Asia from its home port of San Diego. Two other US officials confirmed the deployment but did not disclose the ships’ destination. The same official noted that the troops are leaving the US nearly three weeks ahead of schedule. The White House and the Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment.

The latest deployment will add to the roughly 50,000 US troops already stationed in West Asia and is expected to bring two Marine Expeditionary Units into the region. Typically comprising around 2,500 Marines each, these units can conduct a range of operations, including airstrikes from onboard aircraft or ground deployments. Earlier reports had indicated that the US military was preparing for possible next steps in the ongoing conflict.Separately, US forces are intensifying efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. US warplanes and attack helicopters have increased strikes against Iranian drones and naval vessels as part of a broader campaign to keep the sea lanes open, officials said.

Gen Dan Caine said Thursday that low-flying Air Force A-10 Warthog aircraft were “hunting and killing fast-attack watercraft” operated by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard in the contested waters. He added that some regional allies, which he did not identify, were using Apache helicopter gunships to “handle one-way attack drones,” a tactic increasingly used by Iran across the Persian Gulf. The US is also weighing plans to occupy Kharg Island to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reported on Friday, citing four sources.

Priyadarshini Mattoo case: Delhi high court orders convict Santosh Singh to surrender before hearing remission plea | Delhi News

New Delhi: In a significant development in the 1996 Priyadarshini Mattoo murder case, Delhi High Court on Thursday directed convict Santosh Singh to surrender on Monday, after the victim’s brother strongly opposed his plea for premature release. Justice Anup J Bhambhani issued the order after taking note of submissions by Hemant Mattoo, Priyadarshini’s elder brother and the last surviving member of the family. The court said it would consider Singh’s plea for remission only after he surrenders. Earlier in Jan, the court had issued notice to Hemant, noting that the “next of kin of the deceased/victim have not been intimated of the pendency of the present petition seeking premature release.” Singh, who was granted parole last year, has remained out of prison after securing extensions from the high court while his plea for remission is pending. Appearing in the matter for the first time after being asked by the court, Hemant—represented by advocate Urvika Suri—opposed the plea and said he wished to assist the court in explaining why the Sentence Review Board (SRB) was right in rejecting Singh’s request for premature release. Last year, a different high court bench had set aside the SRB’s decision, observing that Singh had shown signs of reform. The court noted that the SRB had relied only on the gravity, cruelty and perversity of the crime, and on objections raised by Delhi Police and the CBI. The bench had also noted that Singh was lodged in an open prison, allowing him to leave the prison complex daily between 8 am and 8 pm for work as a legal consultant—an indication, it said, of positive reformative conduct. Priyadarshini Mattoo, 25, was raped and murdered in Jan 1996. Singh, then a law student at Delhi University, was acquitted by a trial court in 1999. However, on Oct 27, 2006, Delhi High Court overturned the verdict, convicted him of rape and murder, and sentenced him to death. In Oct 2010, Supreme Court upheld the conviction but commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment.

Pearl Harbor: Watch: Trump’s ‘Pearl Harbor’ jibe on Iran war question makes for awkward moment with Japan PM

US president Donald Trump’s meeting with Japan’s prime minister Sanae Takaichi on Thursday, supposed to be a routine diplomatic affair turned tense after an exchange over American strikes on Iran during a press interaction at the Oval Office. The awkward moment unfolded when a Japanese reporter asked “Why didn’t you tell US allies about the war before attacking Iran?”. In his response, Trump referenced Pearl Harbor, drawing a visible reaction and shifting the tone of what had begun as a standard diplomatic engagement.

Donald Trump Sparks Shock Silence With ‘Tone-Deaf’ Remark During High-Stakes Meet

Trump responded by saying the strikes were kept secret to maintain an element of surprise. The US president went on to say, “We didn’t tell anybody about it because we wanted a surprise. Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn’t you tell me about Pearl Harbor, OK?” Takaichi did not respond to the comment, but her reaction was telling and quickly spread across social media. She widened her eyes, leaned back in her chair, and her composed smile slipped away. She chose not to respond to the remark and maintained a polite demeanor toward Trump. At one point, she even praised him, calling him the only person who “can achieve peace across the world.”

Poll

Do you think sensitive historical references should be avoided in diplomatic talks?

Pearl Harbor (1941)

The Attack on Pearl Harbor took place on December 7, 1941, when Japan launched a surprise air strike on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor. More than 350 aircraft from the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked in two waves, targeting battleships, airfields and military facilities. The assault lasted about 90 minutes and caused heavy damage, destroying or damaging eight battleships and nearly 200 aircraft, many of which were hit on the ground. A total of 2,403 Americans were killed and 1,178 were injured. The attack led the United States to enter World War II the following day.Officials present at the meeting described Trump’s comment as a joke. There is no indication that it was part of any formal discussion. The White House has not issued a separate statement on the remark. The meeting focused on ties between the United States and Japan. The two countries are close allies and cooperate on economic, defence, and regional security issues, despite having been on opposite sides during World War II.During the talks, the leaders discussed defence cooperation, trade and security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region. Japan remains an important partner for the US in dealing with challenges involving China and North Korea.References to Pearl Harbor can be sensitive in diplomatic settings because of its historical impact. At the same time, the US and Japan have built a strong alliance since World War II. Leaders from both countries have, over the years, acknowledged the past while focusing on cooperation.

High stakes amid Iran conflict

The uncomfortable moment also came amid growing global tensions. US strikes on Iran have drawn Washington further into the conflict, and Trump is now seeking backing from allies, including Japan. “We’re undertaking this operation, and once it’s finished, the world will be much safer,” he said, adding that Japan’s prime minister shares his view.He has also called on Japan to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil shipments that has been virtually shut by Iran since the beginning of the conflict. However, Japan faces a delicate situation. It has traditionally maintained good relations with both Israel and Arab countries and has often positioned itself as neutral. Additionally, its pacifist constitution, established after World War II, restricts military activities overseas, making any decision to send forces abroad politically challenging.(With input from agencies)

Lucknow Murder News: UP man thrashed to death by in-laws; wife gagged, tied, forced to watch assault | Lucknow News

A 30-year-old man, Vishnu Yadav, was brutally murdered by his in-laws in Lucknow.

LUCKNOW: A 30-year-old Pratapgarh man, Vishnu Yadav, was beaten to death by his father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sisters-in-law in front of his wife at their Aashiana residence, police said on Thursday.“The victim’s wife was tied up, gagged, and held hostage while the assault unfolded,” police added. “The intention was to teach Vishnu a lesson for marrying their daughter Sakshi Singh four years ago against the family’s wishes.”Police arrested six family members on Thursday. The family allegedly nursed a grudge against Vishnu ever since the wedding. On March 17, the couple was called to Sakshi’s parental home in Sector I, Bangla Bazaar. Investigators said Sakshi was overpowered, tied up, and locked in a room while her husband was brutally assaulted.“The accused repeatedly hit Vishnu with wooden planks and an iron rod until he died,” a police officer said. Sakshi, later rescued by police, told investigators that her father, mother, and four sisters carried out the attack while she remained confined and helpless.Police arrived after a Dial 112 call and found Vishnu’s body in a pool of blood. Sakshi was found bound with visible injuries and immediately freed.A case was registered under murder and other charges based on a complaint lodged by Vishnu’s father. The arrested accused—Tirthraj Singh, his wife Saroj Devi, and their daughters Radha, Ratna, Jyoti, and Vidhi—have been sent to judicial custody. Blood-stained wooden planks and a rod believed to have been used in the murder were also recovered. The postmortem revealed Vishnu suffered 20 ante-mortem injuries, including 16 on the skull. The injuries included multiple lacerations, contusions, abrasions, skull fractures, and intracranial haemorrhage. Additional wounds were recorded on the face and neck. The autopsy concluded the cause of death was shock and haemorrhage from severe head trauma, caused by repeated blows with blunt objects.

What impact do you think media coverage has on public perception of such violent crimes?

Vishnu’s family has demanded the death penalty. His brother Rohit Yadav said, “What was done to Vishnu is beyond cruelty. We want nothing less than the death penalty.” Their father, Chhedilal Yadav, echoed the demand, saying justice would only be served if the accused receive capital punishment.

IPL 2026: 5 players Rajasthan Royals could target as replacements for Sam Curran | Cricket News

Rajasthan Royals have suffered a major setback ahead of IPL 2026, with Sam Curran ruled out of the tournament. The England all-rounder, who was traded to the Royals along with Ravindra Jadeja from Chennai Super Kings in exchange for Sanju Samson, was expected to play a crucial role in the team’s plans this season.Curran’s absence leaves a significant gap, given his value as a multi-skilled player who contributes with both bat and ball. His ability to deliver in the death overs further made him a key component of the Royals’ setup, and replacing him will not be straightforward. As things stand, Rajasthan Royals could look at Donovan Ferreira, who was also brought in via a trade deal from Delhi Capitals in exchange for Nitish Rana. However, the team is likely to explore multiple options to find a suitable replacement. The Royals already have four overseas pacers in their squad apart from Curran — Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger, Kwena Maphaka and Adam Milne — but what they need now is an all-rounder who can fill the void left by Curran. Here are five players Rajasthan Royals could target as replacements:

Watch

IPL 2026 should be audition for the next India T20I captain

Jimmy Neesham (New Zealand)An experienced campaigner with prior IPL exposure, Jimmy Neesham has also represented the Royals during the 2022 season when they reached the final. A capable medium pacer and a handy lower-order batter, Neesham brings valuable international experience that could prove useful in pressure situations.Josh Tongue (England)Rajasthan Royals have historically shown a preference for English players, and Josh Tongue could be an exciting option. He has been in outstanding form in The Hundred, picking up 21 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 13.33, including 14 wickets in the 2025 season alone. His ability to generate bounce and hit the deck hard makes him well-suited to Indian conditions, and with limited IPL exposure, he would arrive eager to make an impact.Gerald Coetzee (South Africa)Gerald Coetzee offers a high-impact but slightly risky option. He was South Africa’s standout bowler at the 2023 ODI World Cup, taking the most wickets by a South African in a single edition. Known for his pace and ability to move the ball, he can be effective both in the powerplay and at the death. However, injuries remain a concern, as he missed the T20 World Cup 2026 and featured in only three matches in SA20 2026. He also has IPL experience with the Mumbai Indians.Ottneil Baartman (South Africa)A strong like-for-like replacement, Ottneil Baartman has earned high praise from Keshav Maharaj, who called him the best death bowler in South Africa. He played a key role in Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s back-to-back SA20 title wins in 2023 and 2024 and was also part of South Africa’s run to the T20 World Cup final in 2024. Baartman’s association with Paarl Royals in SA20 also gives him familiarity with the Royals setup.Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand)Another experienced option, Daryl Mitchell has previously represented Rajasthan Royals. Apart from being a dependable middle-order batter, he can also contribute with the ball when required, making him a flexible option for the side. With Curran ruled out, Rajasthan Royals face a crucial decision in identifying the right balance for their squad, especially with the need for a reliable all-rounder who can contribute across departments.

UP govt teacher falls victim to ‘pig-butchering romance’ scam, Rs 49 lakh siphoned via ‘trading platform’ | Lucknow News

UP teacher falls victim to ‘pig-butchering’ romance scam

LUCKNOW: A govt school teacher from Lucknow fell prey to a ‘pig butchering romance’ scam, an insidious blend of romance, deception, and financial fraud—losing a staggering Rs 49 lakh to a woman he met on a matrimonial platform. Police officials said it was the first such scam in the city. According to the FIR filed with the cyber police, a resident of Jankipuram and an employee of the basic education department came in contact with a woman identifying herself as Isha Desai on June 20, 2025, via the app m4marry. Claiming to be a Mumbai-based textile business owner, she cultivated a relationship with the victim, gradually building emotional trust. Police, on the basis of the FIR, said this emotional manipulation was the first step in what experts describe as a ‘long con’. Thereafter, the accused introduced the teacher to a trading platform—gomarketsuma.com.Initial investments yielded fake profits. Drawn deeper into the scheme, the teacher transferred Rs49 lakh to various bank accounts provided by the accused in six months. A dummy credit of Rs 10 lakh was also reflected in his trading account. The scam took a dramatic turn when the victim attempted to withdraw Rs2.5 lakh. The platform showed a sudden spike in profits—Rs 1 crore — and demanded Rs Rs33 lakh as “tax” to release the funds. “When the teacher refused to give more money and demanded his Rs 49 lakh back, he was allegedly threatened with legal action, including proceedings by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a tactic aimed at inducing fear and compliance,” police said.Realizing the fraud, the teacher approached cyber crime police, who confirmed that the entire operation was part of a coordinated cyber fraud network. Investigators have been provided with key digital evidence, including transaction records, chat logs, the mobile number of the accused, and screenshots of the fake trading platform. Officials said a detailed probe has been initiated. “No genuine platform demands upfront tax for withdrawals,” an officer noted. What is ‘pig-butchering’A cybercrime expert and former IPS officer, Triveni said that this is a textbook ‘pig-butchering’ romance scam, where fraudsters ‘fatten’ the victim emotionally and financially over time like a ‘pig’, and then take away all his wealth, ‘slaughtering’ him financially. “They build trust, show fake gains, and then extract large sums before disappearing. These scams are psychologically engineered and often run by organised international syndicates,” he said.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Indian cricket deserves clarity over their futures, not hocus-pocus | Cricket News

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma (AP Photo)

New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has expressed a strong desire to remain through the Los Angeles Olympics. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar wants to stay until the 2027 ODI World Cup. T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has set his sights on 2028 and ODI captain Shubman Gill has locked the ultimate target for South Africa. Every important individual in Indian cricket is focussed on what lies ahead but the biggest irony is that two of the country’s biggest superstars still have to deal with non-committal undertones.Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – two former ODI captains and arguably the finest cricketers to have played the game – are yet to receive public backing for next year’s showpiece in South Africa. “There is still time left,” “the World Cup is nearly two years away,” “we want to focus on the present.” With time, the statements have changed but the sentiment remains the same.

Ajit Agarkar knocks BCCI door, makes a huge extension request | World Cup

The only reassuring words from the Indian camp came in October 2025 when India’s Test and newly-appointed ODI captain, Gill, supported the two stalwarts. “Absolutely,” Gill said, when asked if he saw Rohit and Kohli playing an important role in ODIs leading into the World Cup. “The experience the two of them have (is immense), and there are very few players who can match the number of matches they have won for India,” he added.Less than a week later, coach Gambhir urged everyone to “stay in the present.”“Look, 50-over World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away, and I think it is very important to stay in the present,” he said in a press conference after India beat West Indies 2-0 in the Test series. “That is very important. Obviously, they are quality players, they are coming back, their experience is going to be a handful in Australia as well. Hopefully, those two guys will have a successful tour, and more importantly, as a team, we will have a successful series.”

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Since then, Virat and Rohit have played series against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, and they also squeezed in some List A outings for their respective states in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. While Rohit has lost a lot of weight—”half of him,” according to Brendon McCullum—Virat has gained plenty of intent.Virat, in particular, has switched to beast mode. In his last 10 fifty-over outings, he has hit four hundreds and as many half-centuries. Rohit had quieter showings against New Zealand but he, too, looked menacing in the series against South Africa and Australia. Both right-handers, who have been the backbone of the Indian team for the last two decades, are in the last phase of their careers but continue to fight for survival while chasing the unfinished business from three years ago.India face a packed ODI calendar leading up to next year’s World Cup, and it is imperative that someone from the BCCI calls both Rohit and Virat to discuss their plans. Not the players’ plans, but the board’s plans. The players have their target locked and the onus is now on the Indian cricket board to navigate the situation.

The dagger of insecurity hanging over their heads is not ideal for any Indian dressing room, and it’s not a surprise that the ODI set-up remains the most tense one. There are strong murmurs that some senior players are limiting their conversations with the coach and restricting their chatter with the chief selector to formal pleasantries.

Poll

What should be the main focus of the Indian cricket team in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup?

The head coach asserted during one of his many media appearances since winning the T20 World Cup that planning for the ODI World Cup will begin some time during the IPL but before the blueprint is finalised, dialogue needs to happen. Not just dialogue but clear communication stating whether Virat and Rohit fit into the World Cup plans.

Although it’s quite funny that a conversation of this nature, involving two white ball giants, is even required, the indirect messaging via press conferences and the growing chatter on social media timelines are doing everything but making the dressing room ideal for an event of that proportion. If other one-format cricketers, not on the right side of 30, can look two years ahead; if a chief selector can ask for a shot at unfinished business; and if a head coach can express a desire to continue a year after his official tenure ends, the least Virat and Rohit can expect is clear dialogue. If the men who matter still feel they can have a real shot without the two, and keep the dressing room at its secure best, they must be reading the room with supernatural powers.

Retro roots, Gen Z vibes: With free WiFi, games & coffee, India Post flexes for the young | Mumbai News

Inside the IIT-Bombay campus in Powai where he once spent four years, alumnus Rajan Verma is reading a book that does not belong to him. Titled ‘Zero To One’, it was kept in the nearby ‘reading corner’ of the campus post office—a mini library stacked with bestsellers. As he waits for a friend to post a parcel, Verma, now a techie with a leading software firm, scans the room for nostalgia and finds none. A far cry from the cobwebbed cables and creaking cupboards of every post office he’s known, many things about the space are pleasantly unrecognisable. The steel perforated seat he’s sitting on, for instance, has replaced an uninviting wooden bench. Diagonally opposite, the former Aadhaar enrolment cabin now hosts a guitar, beanbags and a slender coffee machine. “Delivery flex”, reads a nearby sign. Another proclaims: “A red letter box is better than red flags”. The wall behind him—flaky and chipped in his student days—carries a freshly painted thought bubble: “Retro roots revamped in Gen Z vibes”. If the puns, tripods and ringlights don’t give it away, a nook inviting visitors to get their photos printed on 12 personalised stamps for Rs 300 seals it. The IIT-B post office—the only ‘Gen Z post office’ in Maharashtra—is part of a nationwide initiative by India Post to reimagine the humble post office for a younger audience. Now called NGen—short for Next Generation— the programme began as ‘Gen Z’ before being renamed to broaden its reach. “We didn’t want to portray it as targeting just one generation,” says an India Post official. “The idea is to connect to the new generation, the next generation—and even those after that.” The push, he says, came directly from Jyotiraditya Scindia, minister of communications, who wanted to shift the perception of postal services. “The general mindset is still ‘purana hai’. Over the years, the youth connect has been lost somewhere. So, the idea was to rebuild it.” Educational campuses proved the most natural starting point. Many large institutes—from IITs to IIMs—already had post offices serving students and faculty. “Students use them for sending parcels or documents, especially when they graduate and send things back home. We wanted to make it a place where students could come, relate to the space and spend time,” says another official. The first to be transformed was the IIT-Delhi campus post office, which was redesigned by students of its fine arts department, whose ideas have shaped the graffiti, interior themes and promotional material. Free Wi-Fi access, dedicated student service counters, parcel packing services and discounted Speed Post document services now make the facility more contemporary and accessible. The results were immediate: when Scindia visited, nearly 80% of the hundred-odd students in the room had already been to their campus post office. Since last Nov, 46 such spaces have opened across the country, with a target of 100 by the end of the financial year. The redesigned post offices feature free WiFi, coffee counters, board games and magazines—something closer to a campus common room than a govt counter. “This is mainly an outreach exercise. The idea is that students come, read books, hang out with friends—and also use the services,” says an official. At Bengaluru’s Acharya Institute of Technology, where students redesigned the campus post office wall by wall, Keerthi Shri, who is in the second semester, says, “Earlier the post office looked very plain. Now, students say it feels like coming to a ‘hi-fi office’.” Kerala leads the way, with three NGen post offices already running. “The number of account openings has gone up since the makeover,” says Rahul IPoS, senior sub-postmaster, Trivandrum north division, who oversees the NGen post office at Government Engineering College. The redesigns have also quietly revived older habits. At IIM-Gandhinagar, sub-postmaster Kruti Mehta has watched the number of students sending parcels home rise steadily since the makeover. “Students prefer post office for sending books and clothes—it’s cheaper, and flights allow only 15kg,” she says. In Bengaluru, students have started writing postcards to their families again. Keerthi has opened a postal savings account. “I’ve deposited Rs 2,000,” she says, happy to join her mother and sister as a post office account holder. In Powai, postwoman Ashwini Shinde—who has been working there for 16 years—says she likes to return to a colourful office. Does she use the guitar room? “I can’t play,” she says. Meanwhile, sub-postmaster Kavita Tawde opens the complaints and suggestions register that is now buzzing with compliments. One entry stands out—from Joginder Singh, who introduces himself as “a resident of the IIT market since 1968”: “Today, it was great to see my post office clean and bright. I wish to see it always this way.”
