England Test captain Ben Stokes has admitted that the past three months have been the most challenging period of his captaincy, following England’s disappointing 4-1 defeat in the Ashes in Australia.Despite the setback, Stokes has reaffirmed his commitment to leading the team forward alongside head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key, all of whom have retained the backing of the England and Wales Cricket Board. In an emotional Instagram post, Stokes described the mental and emotional toll of leading England through a difficult Ashes campaign.”Being England captain is the greatest honour a player can be given and I do not take it for granted. It has its highs and it has its lows, it makes you want to smile it makes you want to cry. It completely and utterly consumes you and feels like it’s the only thing in your life at times. The last 3 months has without a doubt been the hardest period of my captaincy journey, it’s tested me in so many different ways and I’m sure every other captain has gone through this as well,” Stokes said.Stokes emphasised that the leadership group remains united and determined to improve, Baz,Rob and myself have the passion and desire to take this team forward, we are going to give you everything we have, we know we made mistakes along the way and we have learnt from those mistakes, you learn more from failure than success. I have learnt a lot about myself but the most important thing that I want the fans to know is that….” he added.Ben stokes gives a strong and bold message to the cricket fans after his captaincy was questioned post 4-1 ashes loss. Stokes said,” I F*****G love cricket, I F*****G love this team, I F*****G love being England captain and I have got so much more to give to this role and I’m so happy that I get to do it with Baz and Rob.””We all appreciate every single person who supports us. We do what we do for many reasons but one of those reasons is to bring our supporters and fans happiness and and a sense of pride and we will aim to do those things as much as we can in the future, See you all in June for the start of the Test Match summer” he concluded on Instagram.

Why did England struggled in the Ashes Series

England’s defeat in The Ashes was more than just a loss, it was a systemic failure. Poor preparation, including the lack of meaningful warm-up matches, left the team underprepared for Australian conditions. The aggressive “Bazball” approach, once hailed as revolutionary, unravelled quickly after a heavy defeat in Perth, leaving England without a fallback plan. The report quoted by Telegraph sports was the cultural issues within the dressing room which says that, ” There were players in the Ashes who felt McCullum was naturally drawn to those like him who enjoy a beer, a vape and a round of golf. Unintentionally it created a clique that became more apparent under the stress of an Ashes loss and there were players who felt a non-serious environment had cost them the opportunity of a lifetime in Australia.Since then, a midnight curfew has been introduced, while the ECB is looking to appoint a new national selector after Luke Wright stepped down for family reasons.

Rebel threat casts shadow over PSL; foreign players urged to withdraw

NEW DELHI: Rebel groups in Pakistan have warned international cricketers to immediately withdraw from the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), placing the 11th edition of the tournament in a security crisis days ahead of its start on March 26.The statement, issued by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesperson Asad Mansoor, frames the T20 league as a “cruel mockery” of the suffering in regions such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The “advisory” from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) faction, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, warns international cricketers to withdraw from the PSL, claiming the safety of international players cannot be guaranteed given the current volatile and precarious security landscape. The group asserted they would not permit the “dignity of the people to be compromised for the sake of political optics” or allow the “blood of the oppressed to be overshadowed by the lights of a stadium”.“In a climate where military operations and civil unrest dominate significant portions of the territory, the safety of international athletes cannot be guaranteed. Given these dire circumstances, we strongly advise you to prioritise your personal security and withdraw. The organised spectacle of the PSL serves as a cruel mockery of our suffering,” it said. This threat comes at a sensitive time as Pakistan has been embroiled in escalation in rebel activity, leading the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to restrict the tournament to just two venues, Karachi and Lahore, and also keep spectators out.Despite the ultimatum, the PCB has claimed that the tournament would proceed as scheduled.

Can Axar Patel shed ‘forever the bridesmaid’ tag in IPL 2026? | Cricket News

Can Axar Patel shed ‘forever the bridesmaid’ tag in IPL 2026?

NEW DELHI: In an era of fleeting flamboyance in cricket, Axar Patel is an outlier. The all-rounder played a pivotal role in India winning three ICC titles — two T20 World Cups and a Champions Trophy — in a span of 21 months. He has won games with both bat and ball, and his fielding has been equally memorable.Who can forget his catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh with a perfectly timed leap at deep square leg in Gros Islet in 2024, or the effort at a packed Wankhede where he ran back from point to grab a skier from England captain Harry Brook during the thrilling T20 World Cup semi-final.

Then there was the Will Jacks catch in the same match. While the scorecard will credit Shivam Dube, it was Axar’s stunning effort that made all the difference. He plucked the ball on the run, lost balance without losing awareness of the boundary cushions, and tossed it towards a converging Dube to complete the dismissal. The 32-year-old has always been hailed as a team man to the very end. Over the years, he has been labelled India’s “crisis man”, “the underrated one”, Ravindra Jadeja’s “understudy”, and even tagged as “forever the bridesmaid”.The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League presents him with a chance to shed those tags. Leading the Delhi Capitals for a second consecutive season, Axar has an opportunity to claim a crowning moment in his career. On Monday, at the Delhi Capitals pre-season press conference, Axar deservedly received all the plaudits, but he looked like a man on a mission. IPL 2026 could also mark a defining chapter for a player who has given his sweat, tears and blood to a franchise often seen as the IPL’s perennial underachiever, while entering his eighth consecutive season with the team.

“In the first year as captain, you are learning a lot, be it about your players, about situations and about yourself as a leader. Now I feel more settled. I understand the players better, I understand what works for this team and what kind of environment we want to create,” said Axar.“The focus is on being positive, aggressive and, most importantly, building trust. When players feel that backing and trust, they automatically take responsibility and perform better. That is something I am very clear about as a captain.”Delhi Capitals will start their campaign on April 1 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium. The first job for Axar will be to kick off the campaign with a win. The Delhi franchise, in the past, has often come close but not finished the job. Axar knows this very well, having played 84 games in Delhi colours.MUST READ | Understated, indispensable: Why Axar Patel remains India’s unsung MVP“We don’t sit and keep talking about the past. Everyone knows that we have come close in certain moments, and as players you are aware of it anyway. The conversation is always about what we can do better going forward. Maybe one or two matches could have changed things, but that is how the game goes. We focus on staying positive and improving as a unit rather than carrying those thoughts into a new season,” he said.

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel

If Delhi Capitals are to end the drought, Axar will have to step up with the bat, ball and as a captain. Interestingly, Axar has never crossed the 300-run mark in the IPL in the 162 games he has played over twelve years. The all-rounder is yet to better his debut season with the ball, where he picked up 17 wickets for Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings. But as Venugopal Rao, Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket, said, the management believes in Axar to take the franchise to that elusive trophy.“Franchise cricket and the Indian team are totally different. There are different cultures. At the franchise level, there are players from different countries who come together and play. In the Indian team, everybody knows how they will play. The winning mentality of the Indian team is such that everyone is flexible enough and adapts to any role and conditions. At the franchise level, as skipper, I would like to bring that. You can’t just play one way,” he said.“In the Indian team, roles are set. At the franchise level, sometimes someone who opens has to play in the middle order.“I am very excited about the new season. Whatever mistakes we made last season, we have got good back-ups in the opening slot and the pace department at the auction. We have a full-fledged squad, and we are very excited about fighting for the title,” added Axar.

Delhi Capitals’ press conference

Axar also made it pretty clear that, as an all-rounder, he is not a big fan of the Impact Player rule. “As an all-rounder, I am personally not a fan of the Impact Player rule. Earlier, you would have to pick all-rounders. Because of this, team managements can pick a particular batter or bowler. So, I am not a fan of it,” he said.Axar Patel also shared what he has learnt from captaining Delhi last season. Not to forget, he is the vice-captain of India’s title-winning T20 World Cup team and was dropped in the Super Eight against South Africa because of match-ups.“I am not saying I don’t look at data or match-ups completely. It depends on the situation. I look at all factors and assess. It is not that I don’t look at match-ups or data. I follow everything and then it depends. You have to know when to use what weapon. When you are on the ground and taking decisions, it is about what you feel at that point of time. Obviously, you go on instinct as well. It is a mix of things,” he said. For Axar Patel, IPL 2026 is not just another season, it is a chance to redefine his narrative. A player long valued for his selflessness now stands at the centre of Delhi Capitals’ ambitions. If he can combine his all-round consistency with decisive leadership, this could finally be the season where he moves from being the dependable support act to the man who delivers the ultimate prize.

‘Gautam Gambhir does not need to be rude, rough because he is a good man’: Ganguly | Cricket News

'Gautam Gambhir does not need to be rude, rough because he is a good man': Ganguly
Gautam Gambhir (ICC Photo)

NEW DELHI: Gautam Gambhir is rarely seen smiling and carries the reputation of being a hard taskmaster. His aggression, celebrations, and constant involvement – from offering tips to players to applauding milestones and victories – along with his straightforward remarks in press conferences, are prime examples that define his serious demeanour. However, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has a different take.

While acknowledging Gambhir’s no-nonsense and aggressive approach, Ganguly described him as a “good man” and said he does not need to be rude or rough.Gambhir was appointed head coach of the Indian team in July 2024, succeeding Rahul Dravid, who guided India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title.Under Gambhir, India went on to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the Asia Cup, and also successfully defended their T20 World Cup crown in 2026 by defeating New Zealand national cricket team in the final.“He [Gambhir] is winner [of] T20 World Cup, winner Champions Trophy, he is a tremendous T20 coach,” Ganguly told Revsports. While Gambhir has been praised for India’s success in white-ball cricket, he has also faced criticism for the team’s struggles in the red-ball format.India suffered a 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand last year, followed by a 1-3 series defeat in Australia. The five-match series against England in England ended in a 2-2 draw. India then registered a 2-0 clean sweep against West Indies, but suffered another home whitewash, losing 0-2 to South Africa.Ganguly expressed confidence that Gambhir will improve as a Test coach in the near future.“He is going to get better in Test matches and most importantly play on good wickets. If you play some good wickets, he will be a good Test match coach as well. He plays too much on turning pitches in India. Look what he did in England on good pitches where he didn’t have control. So as a coach he should take the wicket out of his system,” Ganguly said.“In these conditions [he has mastered the white-ball format] , so I’m looking forward to the 2027 World Cup. He has to find a way to get better there because his batting is breathtaking in these conditions but when it seems when it bounces, that is where he is going to get his boys better. Before they were going to Australia they were saying Gambhir This, Gambhir That, I said give that fellow a chance. I said give that fellow a chance. So I am sure he will do it. He is a competitor,” he said.

How do you view Sourav Ganguly's comments about Gautam Gambhir?

“You know he may be rude rough but he is a competitor. He does not need to be rude rough because you know he is a good man. I have seen Yaar played with him for India but he is a competitor. He wants to win,” he said.“He speaks the right things about his team tries to create an environment of team not individuals. So he is good but I think he will. His biggest test will be when he starts going away and that’s something which he has to which he has to master and I am sure he will,” he added.

With the Indian Premier League 2026 season just days away, an unexpected topic has captured the nation’s attention — Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, the film has triggered a frenzy across the country, cutting through even the IPL buzz. The spy-action sequel, released last week, is enjoying a sensational run at the box office, raking in massive collections and shattering records. With demand for tickets skyrocketing, even one of India’s greatest cricketers, Sunil Gavaskar, has found it difficult to secure a seat in theatres.Veteran actor Rakesh Bedi, who plays a key role in the two-part film, revealed the amusing episode through a video on Instagram. While requesting fans to avoid sharing spoilers, Bedi recounted his recent meeting with Gavaskar and the unusual request that followed.“Talking about sports, yesterday I met one of the great sportspersons of India, the great Sunil Gavaskar ji. He said, ‘Rakesh ji, I am not able to get the tickets. So please arrange it for me,” said Bedi in the video.“So I am trying to arrange some tickets for him. I hope I am able to,” he added. The film is now on track to become the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of all time, a record currently held by its predecessor, Dhurandhar. The craze has extended into the cricketing world as well. ‘Surya not being captain is a concern’: Ashwin’s blunt verdict on MI captaincy | Cricket News

'Surya not being captain is a concern': Ashwin’s blunt verdict on MI captaincy
Mumbai Indians’ Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya (PTI Photo)

With the Indian Premier League 2026 set to begin on March 28, Ravichandran Ashwin has raised a key concern surrounding Mumbai Indians and their leadership structure. The veteran off-spinner believes Suryakumar Yadav should have been entrusted with the captaincy, particularly after guiding India to their third T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year. The franchise had handed over leadership duties to Hardik Pandya following his high-profile move from Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2024 season. However, Mumbai’s title drought since 2020 has continued, and the leadership shift — which also saw Rohit Sharma replaced — sparked widespread debate.

Hardik’s appointment triggered a strong backlash during IPL 2024, with fans openly expressing their displeasure at multiple venues. Despite that, he managed to turn sentiment in his favour by playing a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup success, ending a long wait for an ICC trophy. In IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians showed improvement by reaching the playoffs, but their journey ended with a defeat in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings.Ashwin, however, feels the bigger issue lies in overlooking Suryakumar’s recent achievements as a leader. Since taking charge of India’s T20I side in July 2024, the team has remained unbeaten in bilateral series, culminating in the World Cup victory.“Suryakumar Yadav not being the captain of the Mumbai Indians is a no-brainer. Usko captaincy dena hi chahiye (He should definitely be the captain). And the fact that it isn’t happening, I’m sure, is a bit of a concern,” Ashwin said on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat.At the same time, Ashwin acknowledged Hardik’s track record as a skipper. Under his leadership, Gujarat Titans clinched the IPL title in their debut season and finished runners-up the following year.“We should also look at Hardik’s captaincy credentials. Hardik Pandya, as the Gujarat Titans captain, won a title in his first season, and the team was the runner-up in the second. When he came to Mumbai, the expectation was that he would be the captain and continue that trend. However, his first year was spent just dealing with the Rohit Sharma saga,” he added.Ashwin pointed out that Hardik now faces a tricky scenario heading into IPL 2026, with growing voices backing Suryakumar as the more suitable captain.“Now he has to contend with a lot of people telling him that Suryakumar Yadav is the incumbent Indian team captain, yet Hardik is the captain of Mumbai. It’s a very challenging situation; a lot of things could be going through his mind. But I don’t think Hardik Pandya, the captain, lacks credentials—he does have them. He did a great job with the captaincy for the Gujarat Titans,” said Ashwin.“Leaving external issues aside, without any pressure and with the support of the players and management, I still think Hardik can do a fine job. He needs to use this squad that he has in the right way,” he added.Earlier, former India captain and selector Kris Srikkanth had echoed a similar sentiment, suggesting that Suryakumar should take over the leadership role, with Hardik stepping aside for the national T20I captain.Mumbai Indians will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign on March 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.

NEW DELHI: Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi on Monday responded to allegations made by former head coach Gary Kirsten, who claimed there was significant “interference” during his short stint with Pakistan cricket.Naqvi, speaking at a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, was asked about Kirsten’s remarks. He said he had ‘limited engagement’ with Kirsten during his tenure as coach.

“I didn’t have many interactions with Gary Kirsten, so it would be better if those people who were co-ordinating things with him and involved regularly with him responded in detail to his allegations,” Naqvi told reporters.Kirsten’s tenure as Pakistan head coach lasted just six months. The South African great was appointed in April 2024 on a two-year contract but resigned in October 2024.What are Kirsten’s claims? In an interview with talkSPORT, Kirsten opened up about the challenges he faced during his time with the Pakistan team.“The thing that surprised me more than anything was the level of interference. I don’t think I have ever seen it at that level before. Did it surprise me? I don’t know, but it was significant,” Kirsten said while speaking to talkSPORT Cricket.Kirsten explained that such an environment made it extremely difficult for a coach to implement plans.“It is quite difficult for a coach to come and formulate a way that you can work with the players when there is just this constant noise from the outside. It was tough, just this constant noise from the outside and a lot of punitive actions around poor performance and stuff like that,” he added.“As a coach, you are the lowest hanging fruit when the team isn’t going well, so let us get rid of the coach or let us put a restriction on the coach because that is the easiest thing to do when the teams are performing and that is kind of counterproductive in my view,” Kirsten said.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan said India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy could play an important role in the batting line-up of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).Hyderabad begin their campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 28. While focus remains on players like Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen and Liam Livingstone, Pathan said Reddy could provide balance after a dip in form last season.

Axar Patel questions Impact Player rule: ‘All-rounders lose value’

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Pathan said about NKR, “If he performs his role well, I think he can act as the glue in this unit, which is otherwise very ultra-aggressive. It will be interesting to see how Hyderabad counters this challenge.”He also pointed to the change in Reddy’s numbers from 2024 to 2025. “We saw that his numbers dropped compared to the previous year. In 2024, he scored more than 300 runs and had a good strike rate. But what happened last year? His runs almost halved to around 180, and his strike rate dropped to about 119. It is not like he was batting too low either. In about 7 out of 11 innings, he got opportunities around number four. So, he was unable to capitalize on those chances,” he added, as cited by the news agency ANI.Reddy had won the ‘Emerging Player of the Season’ award in 2024 after scoring 303 runs in 11 innings with two fifties at a strike rate of 143 and taking three wickets. In 2025, he managed 182 runs in 13 matches at an average of 22.75 and a strike rate of around 119, with a highest score of 32, along with two wickets.Pathan also spoke about the absence of Pat Cummins, who is set to miss the early part of the season due to injury. He said the team will feel the absence of his leadership.“His absence will definitely impact how the game is managed. When a young player comes under pressure, they tend to look towards a senior player for guidance. Not having him regularly in the dressing room at the start will also be difficult for Hyderabad. So, from that perspective, his absence will certainly be felt,” he said.“Pat Cummins not being there at the start is a big factor. His bowling and his captaincy have always been exceptional, and his leadership is often talked about. Last year, he matched Harshal Patel with 16 wickets. Even before that, he had taken 18 wickets in a season. His batting is also very important. When he comes in around number eight, he can hit big shots, and the aggression that has been instilled in Hyderabad has largely come from Captain Cummins,” he added.Pathan further said that Ishan Kishan will have a key role as captain in Cummins’ absence. He referred to Kishan’s recent performances, including his run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) where he scored 517 runs in 10 matches with two centuries and two fifties, which led to his return to the national side and contributions in a T20 World Cup-winning campaign.“This time, due to the absence of Pat Cummins, you’ll get to see Ishan Kishan as the captain. Ishan Kishan’s graph is on an upward trajectory. While playing for Jharkhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he led the team as captain and lifted the trophy. Now, the responsibility will be on him,” he said.“We also saw in the World Cup that he delivered outstanding batting performances. When a player has that kind of confidence, giving him the captaincy makes sense. There were also discussions that Abhishek Sharma could be made captain. He has been appointed as vice-captain by Hyderabad, but it is better to go with Ishan Kishan,” he added.
