'Surya not being captain is a concern': Ashwin’s blunt verdict on MI captaincy

With the Indian Premier League 2026 set to begin on March 28, Ravichandran Ashwin has raised a key concern surrounding Mumbai Indians and their leadership structure. The veteran off-spinner believes Suryakumar Yadav should have been entrusted with the captaincy, particularly after guiding India to their third T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year. The franchise had handed over leadership duties to Hardik Pandya following his high-profile move from Gujarat Titans ahead of the 2024 season. However, Mumbai’s title drought since 2020 has continued, and the leadership shift — which also saw Rohit Sharma replaced — sparked widespread debate.

Hardik Pandya & Kieron Pollard Address MI Fans in Aamchi Mumbai

Hardik’s appointment triggered a strong backlash during IPL 2024, with fans openly expressing their displeasure at multiple venues. Despite that, he managed to turn sentiment in his favour by playing a crucial role in India’s T20 World Cup success, ending a long wait for an ICC trophy. In IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians showed improvement by reaching the playoffs, but their journey ended with a defeat in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings.Ashwin, however, feels the bigger issue lies in overlooking Suryakumar’s recent achievements as a leader. Since taking charge of India’s T20I side in July 2024, the team has remained unbeaten in bilateral series, culminating in the World Cup victory.“Suryakumar Yadav not being the captain of the Mumbai Indians is a no-brainer. Usko captaincy dena hi chahiye (He should definitely be the captain). And the fact that it isn’t happening, I’m sure, is a bit of a concern,” Ashwin said on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat.At the same time, Ashwin acknowledged Hardik’s track record as a skipper. Under his leadership, Gujarat Titans clinched the IPL title in their debut season and finished runners-up the following year.“We should also look at Hardik’s captaincy credentials. Hardik Pandya, as the Gujarat Titans captain, won a title in his first season, and the team was the runner-up in the second. When he came to Mumbai, the expectation was that he would be the captain and continue that trend. However, his first year was spent just dealing with the Rohit Sharma saga,” he added.Ashwin pointed out that Hardik now faces a tricky scenario heading into IPL 2026, with growing voices backing Suryakumar as the more suitable captain.“Now he has to contend with a lot of people telling him that Suryakumar Yadav is the incumbent Indian team captain, yet Hardik is the captain of Mumbai. It’s a very challenging situation; a lot of things could be going through his mind. But I don’t think Hardik Pandya, the captain, lacks credentials—he does have them. He did a great job with the captaincy for the Gujarat Titans,” said Ashwin.“Leaving external issues aside, without any pressure and with the support of the players and management, I still think Hardik can do a fine job. He needs to use this squad that he has in the right way,” he added.Earlier, former India captain and selector Kris Srikkanth had echoed a similar sentiment, suggesting that Suryakumar should take over the leadership role, with Hardik stepping aside for the national T20I captain.Mumbai Indians will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign on March 29 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium.

No suitable Indian option? Why KKR are yet to replace injured Harshit Rana | Cricket News

No suitable Indian option? Why KKR are yet to replace injured Harshit Rana

Three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roped in Saurabh Dubey for IPL 2026. The 28-year-old left-arm Vidarbha pacer replaces Akash Deep, who has been ruled out of the season. Dubey was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for IPL 2022 but his stint was cut short due to a back injury.Earlier, KKR had also roped in Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani in place of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman. KKR had initially signed Mustafizur for Rs 9.2 crore as a backup overseas pacer to Rs 18 crore recruit Matheesha Pathirana, but the Bangladesh left-armer was released following BCCI directives earlier this year amid heightened India-Bangladesh tensions.

India pacer Harshit Rana was also ruled out last week of the entire IPL 2026 owing to the ligament injury that he sustained during a warm-up match ahead of the recent T20 World Cup.

Why haven’t KKR asked for Rana’s replacement?

While KKR got the replacement of both Mustafizur and Akash Deep, they haven’t take a call yet on a replacement for India’s seam-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana. The impression within the franchise is that there is no suitable Indian replacement for Rana, who has played for India in all formats, Cricbuzz reported on Monday.Since Wednesday, KKR had been organising trials to select replacements of Rana and Akash Deep, as per a report by news agency IANS.KKR are set to kick their IPL 2026 campaign off against the Mumbai Indians on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The three-time champions will then face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2 at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, before facing off against last year’s finalists, Punjab Kings, on April 6, also at Eden Gardens. In their fourth IPL match, KKR will face Lucknow Super Giants on April 9 at Eden Gardens.

CBI, ED showing reluctance in ADAG probe: SC | India News

CBI, ED showing reluctance in ADAG probe: SC

NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Monday criticised what it called a perceptible reluctance among probe agencies to proceed against Anil Ambani-led ADAG group companies accused of siphoning Rs 40,000 crore from bank loans, and directed CBI and ED to carry out an expeditious and coordinated inquiry against the ADAG entities, their directors and officials.A bench of CJI Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi said, “The conduct of the investigating agencies has reflected a degree of reluctance. The investigation carried out by the probe agencies must be transparent, fair and prompt to inspire confidence not only in the court but also among all stakeholders and the public.”File fresh status reports of ADAG grp case in 4 wks: SC to CBI, EDWhen the bench said though the irregularities in Anil Ambani-led ADAG group loan fraud probe were flagged much earlier by Sebi and CBI’s Aug 2025 FIR dealt with a small part of the fraud, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for CBI and ED, assured the court that the views of the court would be conveyed by him personally to the agencies in a “much harsher” manner.SC asked the agencies to file fresh status reports in four weeks.Mehta informed the court that ED has constituted SIT as directed by the SC and the CBI has so far registered eight separate cases involving alleged siphoning off nearly Rs 41,000 crore from bank loans. Four top officials of ADAG group have been arrested so far, Mehta said. He said CBI is taking help of financial experts to unravel the complex routing and re-routing of money. He said ED has written a letter to banks and financial institutions for prompt furnishing of information relating to sanctioning of loans and the due diligence followed prior to disbursement of the loan amounts. He said the ED has also requested them to act against errant officials under the banking laws and regulations. On his request, the bench directed all financial and other institutions to promptly furnish the information required by the probe agencies. “Apart from the ADAG group and its officials, those involved in the irregular sanction of loans and playing with public money should also be proceeded against,” the bench said. For Anil Ambani, who has already given an undertaking to the court not to leave India without SC’s prior permission, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi said the ADAG group is ready to discuss with the banks and financial institutions for settlement of the dues, but no one is coming forward because of the pendency of the PIL by former bureaucrat E A S Sarma.Mehta said the settlement of dues could absolve the ADAG group of civil liabilities, but the criminal acts require to be thoroughly investigated and taken to their logical end. The bench brushed aside Rohatgi’s request for directions to the banks to discuss settlement of dues with ADAG group. For the PIL petitioner, advocate Prashant Bhushan said that Sebi had given a detailed report about the financial fraud indulged in by ADAG group entities and yet the probe agencies did nothing till the SC issued notices to them. The petition, filed through advocate Pranav Sachdeva, alleged that three of the ADAG companies – Reliance Communications (RCOM), Reliance Infratel (RITL) and Reliance Telecom (RTL) – cumulatively received loans to the tune of Rs 31,850 crore from a consortium of public sector banks led by SBI between 2013-17.Petitioner said various documents revealed alleged involvement of ADAG companies in “large-scale diversion of funds, roundtripping, misuse of external commercial borrowings, fabrication of accounting entries, operation of shell entities, and a complete disregard for the public money.”

Rawalpindi announces the replacement of Jake Fraser-McGurk ahead of PSL 2026

Australian middle-order batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has withdrawn from the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL), starting from March 26. He was about to play for one of the new PSL franchises Rawalpindi Pindiz. As he is no longer a part of the league, the franchise is set to announce his replacement ahead of the tournament.

It is widely claimed that in place of the swashbuckling Aussie batter, another Australian batter, Usman Khawaja can join the Rawalpindi Pindiz. With a wide range of experiences in the top level of the game, Khawaja can be a good replacement for the team. If Khawaja comes on board, then he can help the team with his leadership qualities as well.

Usman Khawaja set to be the replacement of Jake Fraser-McGurk in the PSL 2026

Pakistan Super League has been hit by another blow, as multiple overseas players have opted not to play ahead of the tournament opener. With only a few days to go before the beginning of the league, Jack Fraser-McGurk’s withdrawal came as a massive shock to the PSL team.

The 23-year-old is a proven T20 batter, and an exciting talent who can be a prospect for any team across the globe. Pakistan cricket fans were eagerly waiting for a batter like him to play in this year’s league.

Official announcement regarding Jake Fraser-McGurk’s withdrawal came a day ago

“Jake Fraser-McGurk has opted out of the tournament due to personal reasons. We respect his decision and wish him well. His replacement will be announced soon,” the franchise wrote on X.

After a while, the post was removed from the team’s official social media accounts, but the proof remains, as many followers shared or reposted the information. Later, the franchise owner himself wished the batter good luck for the upcoming days.

“Unfortunate, but wishing JFM the very best and good luck from Pakistan and Rawalpindi,” Ahsan Tahir, the owner of Rawalpindi Pindiz wrote on his ‘X’ post.

Why signing Usman Khawaja can be a brilliant move by Rawalpindi Pindiz?

Jake Fraser-McGurk was unsold and failed to attract a buyer at the PSL’s inaugural player auction. Later, the franchise signed him directly. The upcoming PSL season, scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3, will feature eight teams, including two new entrants—Rawalpindi and Hyderabad Kingsmen. This time, the tournament will host 44 matches in 39 days.

On the other hand, Usman Khawaja, 39, is a seasoned campaigner. The batter captained the Big Bash League (BBL) team Brisbane Heat in the past. With all of his expectations and technical abilities, the batter can provide solidity in the batting order.

Usman Khawaja, who is originally from Pakistan, has previously played for the league with the Islamabad United. During the 2020-21 PSL season, the batter played 7 matches for Islamabad and scored 246 runs in total with a batting average of over 49 and a strike rate of 152.79. If he can do the same with Rawalpindi, then the absence of Jake Fraser-McGurk will not bother the team in any way.

Parliament seats may be increased to 816 for 1/3rd women’s reservation | India News

Parliament seats may be increased to 816 for 1/3rd women's reservation

NEW DELHI: Govt is looking to introduce at least two bills – including constitutional amendments – in the current session of Parliament to roll out reservation for women of one-third seats in the next Lok Sabha poll and assembly elections to be held after it. The move promises to change the country’s political landscape and put an authoritative stamp on PM Modi’s much-touted agenda of women’s empowerment as the campaign for four state assemblies gathers pace. If govt has its way, then the number of seats in LS will rise by 50% to 816 from the existing 543, with the 273-seat increase set aside for women, ensuring that the existing political dynamics and incumbent parliamentarians, overwhelmingly male, are not cut loose as a reshaped order takes hold. The majority mark will, accordingly, move to 409. The strength of LS will increase for the first time in over five decades. The strength of Rajya Sabha and legislative councils in states will not be affected. At least two bills, one on delimitation and another for an amendment in the Constitution, which needs two-thirds support in both Houses, will be brought. Although the governing NDA does not have the strength to secure the passage of the bill on its own, govt seems keen to push for its passage during the budget session concluding on April 4. Failing that, it is open to the idea of convening a short session specifically for women’s quota. Home minister Amit Shah is leading the effort to get support for the two bills and held two meetings on Monday, one with regional parties from the non-NDA bloc, including opposition parties and those unaligned to either formation (NDA or INDIA blocs), and another with BJP’s allies. The women’s quota law, piloted by the Modi govt in 2023, had linked the implementation in legislatures to delimitation that is to be conducted after the completion of the Census, which is about to get under way. Delimitation plan likely to see 50% rise in seats across states People in the know said Shah emphasised govt’s inclination to delink the existing law’s provision for implementing the quota following delimitation to be held after the upcoming Census and launching instead a fresh delimitation based on 2011 census, the last enumeration exercise. The proposal to rely on Census 2011 is meant to ensure that women’s quota is rolled out by the 2029 LS polls, as the release of the upcoming Census data may take some time, leaving inadequate time for completion of a nationwide delimitation exercise. “We were told that the govt is keen to roll out the quota from elections to be held after March 31, 2029. If its desire to build a consensus takes a few more days, then the budget session may be extended or even summoned after adjournment for a few days,” said a person aware of the developments. States like UP and Bihar will see their Lok Sabha constituencies go up to 120 and 60 from the current 80 and 40, respectively, and those in Kerala will rise to 30 from 20.In states with odd numbers (TN has 39), the delimitation commission will work out the details but the jump will be of similar proportion.Govt believes that the proposal to maintain the proportional strength of each state/UT in LS by increasing their share by 50% addresses the concerns of the southern states, which have apprehended a fall in their representational strength in Parliament due to their successful attempts for population control compared to northern states. The reserved seats for SC/STs will also be covered under similar provisions. The current LS has 84 seats for SCs and the number is expected to go up to 126, while the constituencies reserved for STs may rise to 70 from 47. Some UTs and states with one or two LS seats will have their constituency reserved for women every third election, while reserved seats for women will stay for three terms before being put in open category. While 22 MPs representing different parties attended the NDA meeting, representatives of Samajwadi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), BJD and YSR Congress were among those who were part of another meeting with Shah. Some opposition parties, including Congress and the Left, have pushed for an all-party meeting. TMC – which has often cited Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s promotion of women in the party’s representation in Parliament and assembly compared to others to stress on its pro-women tilt – also skipped the meeting. Parties like Congress and SP have pushed for OBC quota within the women’s quota. While the NDA enjoys a majority in LS and RS, it will require support from other parties for reaching the two-thirds mark. The women’s reservation bill was passed at a special session of Parliament in Sept 2023. Govt had hailed the Constitution (One hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act as “Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam”.However, several opposition MPs and women’s rights group had then criticised govt for basing the quota on delimitation after the new Census, as it made the Act’s implementation in 2029 uncertain.

“I didn’t have many interactions with Gary Kirsten, so it would be better if those people who were co-ordinating things with him and involved regularly with him responded in detail to his allegations,” Naqvi told reporters.Kirsten’s tenure as Pakistan head coach lasted just six months. The South African great was appointed in April 2024 on a two-year contract but resigned in October 2024.What are Kirsten’s claims? In an interview with talkSPORT, Kirsten opened up about the challenges he faced during his time with the Pakistan team.“The thing that surprised me more than anything was the level of interference. I don’t think I have ever seen it at that level before. Did it surprise me? I don’t know, but it was significant,” Kirsten said while speaking to talkSPORT Cricket.Kirsten explained that such an environment made it extremely difficult for a coach to implement plans.“It is quite difficult for a coach to come and formulate a way that you can work with the players when there is just this constant noise from the outside. It was tough, just this constant noise from the outside and a lot of punitive actions around poor performance and stuff like that,” he added.“As a coach, you are the lowest hanging fruit when the team isn’t going well, so let us get rid of the coach or let us put a restriction on the coach because that is the easiest thing to do when the teams are performing and that is kind of counterproductive in my view,” Kirsten said.

Conflict posing unprecedented challenges for India, PM Modi tells Parliament | India News

Conflict posing unprecedented challenges for India, PM Modi tells Parliament

NEW DELHI: Talking in Parliament on Monday about the “unprecedented challenges” being faced by India because of the West Asia conflict, PM Modi underlined the country’s opposition to attacks on citizens and energy and transport infrastructure, and said strikes on commercial ships and obstacles to international trade are unacceptable.Modi said that as far as diplomacy was concerned, India’s role was clear. “We have expressed our deep concern about this conflict from the very beginning. I have also spoken to all the representatives of the West Asian nations. I have urged everyone to reduce tensions and end this struggle,” he said, noting that the conflict has now persisted for over three weeks, with deeply adverse consequences for the global economy and human lives. The PM said India continued to strive for the safe passage of Indian ships through diplomacy, adding that Iran had already allowed several Indian carriers to cross the Strait of Hormuz. On the challenges confronting India, he said that the war has created “unprecedented economic, national security, and humanitarian pressures”. He said India has “extensive trade relations with the warring and war-affected countries, that the conflict zone straddles critical trade routes, and that a large share of India’s crude oil and gas needs is met by this very region.” tnnPM: In touch with partners to ensure maritime safetyIndia has always raised its voice for the benefit of humanity and for peace, the PM said, reiterating that dialogue and diplomacy are the solution to the problems in West Asia. “In this war, no one’s life should be in danger, for the benefit of humanity. Therefore, India’s effort is to encourage all parties to reach a peaceful solution as soon as possible,” he said in his first statement on the crisis in Parliament. The movement of ships through the strait had become difficult after the war began, Modi said. He also recalled his conversations with leaders of GCC and other West Asian countries.“The attempt is to continue to receive oil and gas from wherever possible. The Indian govt is constantly keeping an eye on the shipping routes in the Gulf. Our attempt is to ensure the security of all essential goods such as oil, gas and fertilisers. We are in constant contact with our international partners to ensure the safety of our maritime corridors. Because of such efforts, many of our ships have come to India in the past few days,” Modi said.Drawing attention to the nearly one crore Indians who live and work in the Gulf countries, as well as the significant number of Indian crew members aboard commercial ships in those waters, Modi said, “India’s concerns are naturally greater, and therefore, it is essential that a united and unanimous voice goes out to the world from India’s Parliament on this crisis.”Foreign minister S Jaishankar had earlier said that India would focus on talks with Iran to facilitate the movement of its ships. This was in the middle of US President Donald Trump’s efforts to stitch together a coalition for deployment of warships in the strait, an idea that gained little currency with even the US’ allies.
