Chennai: Rajasthan Royals have banked on young talent for success — Vaibhav Sooryavanshi being at the top of the list. And one of the backroom boys who has helped the franchise shape its youth structure is performance coach Siddhartha Lahiri, who oversees the RR academies across the globe as well. Reflecting on Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise, Lahiri told TOI: “He’s got immense calibre for sure, he’s a freak, a 14-year-old with that level of potential. He’s in that phase of his life where he loves to breathe cricket and he loves to bat. From a cricketing perspective, we can only hope he goes on to do things that feel unreal to watch.”

The coach emphasised that the franchise aims to nurture not just players but quality coaches as well. Their academies have already produced international names such as Ollie Pope, Shoaib Bashir and Phil Salt, while closer to home, the focus remains on developing talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. The departure of Sanju Samson was a blow to the Royals, and Lahiri admitted the team would feel his absence. “He is one of the best white-ball cricketers and a player of immense calibre. Of course, he’ll be missed. I’ve been privileged to see him play some amazing innings for us… People are talking about his World Cup success in the last three games, but we in Royals were used to it. It was a mutual decision to part ways, and I wish him every success.” Backing Parag’s leadership credentials, despite a mixed season last year, Lahiri expressed strong confidence in the youngster. “He is outstanding. He has led his domestic side; he plays his cricket in Assam, which means he knows what it means to be an underdog. He is extremely well-respected within the Royals and shares a great rapport with head coach Kumar Sangakkara and the team. I believe Parag has the quality to become an astute leader,” he said. Lahiri also noted that Parag’s progress in the white-ball format has been significant. “If not for a minor shoulder injury, he could well have been part of the T20 World Cup squad. He is an unbelievable white-ball player, and with the fearless brand of cricket India is playing, he fits right in,” he added.

Virat Kohli, RCB return to M Chinnaswamy for first training session: Who did what? | Cricket News

Virat Kohli, RCB return to M Chinnaswamy for first training session: Who did what?

BENGALURU: Nine months after a homecoming that ended in tragedy, Royal Challengers Bengaluru returned to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, beginning preparations for the Indian Premier League, which begins here on March 28.A small but vocal group of fans gathered outside the stadium to welcome the players as the RCB contingent arrived around 4.30 pm. The session lasted two hours before rain forced an early wrap at 6.30 pm.

Watch

The spotlight, unsurprisingly, was on Virat Kohli. The former captain looked in rhythm right away as the session opened with a team huddle, where Kohli and head coach Andy Flower addressed a partially assembled squad.Skipper Rajat Patidar was the most notable absentee and is expected to join on Thursday. Batting coach Dinesh Karthik was also missing, while left-arm pacer Yash Dayal, retained for Rs 5 crore and facing criminal charges, was also absent. Among overseas recruits, only England wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox has arrived so far. However, TOI has learnt that the director of cricket Mo Bobat and the logistics team have mapped out travel plans for the overseas players well in advance, ensuring minimal disruption despite the ongoing unrest in West Asia.Amid the noise of construction work inside the stadium, Kohli’s bat provided the loudest sound. His trademark lofted strokes repeatedly cleared the midwicket boundary, landing deep into the stands.Kohli trained alongside Karnataka skipper and southpaw Devdutt Padikkal, with the duo taking turns against a mix of pace and spin. In an interesting move, RCB did away with net bowlers for the session, relying instead on their own bowling unit and sidearm specialists. The 37-year-old appeared particularly assured against spin, stepping out confidently against the Krunal Pandya-led spin attack. He showed similar intent against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and new recruit Venkatesh Iyer, maintaining intensity throughout.RCB, who returned to the Bengaluru venue after much dilly-dally, will open their campaign against fellow southerners Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28. They will play four more home games at the venue and play two fixtures in Raipur.

Unbox event scrapped

The franchise’s popular ‘Unbox’ event — a fan engagement initiative that has drawn large crowds in recent seasons — will not be held this year. While there hasn’t been an official announcement, it appears the tight schedule and the planned mock drills at the stadium on Mar 23 and 26 led to the decision.

NEW DELHI: With IPL 2026 around the corner, Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves under the scanner, and former cricketers Lakshmipathy Balaji and Faf du Plessis have laid out a detailed roadmap for the three-time champions. From batting order clarity to handling marquee pressure and addressing bowling concerns, both experts highlighted key areas KKR must get right ahead of their high-profile campaign opener against Mumbai Indians on March 29.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Balaji was particularly emphatic about the role of skipper Ajinkya Rahane, insisting he must anchor the top order rather than float in the middle.

“I always feel that KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane should bat in the top order. He shouldn’t bat at anything less than number three,” Balaji said on JioHotstar. “He has done phenomenally well… so him batting one down would be good for both him and KKR.”Balaji proposed an aggressive top four featuring Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Rahane and Cameron Green, calling it the “go-to” combination. With title-winning core players no longer part of the setup, he stressed the need for fresh contributors. “Somebody needs to step in now. Probably, Cameron Green or Finn Allen. And of course, you have a young talent like Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Their time has come now. If they do well, KKR will get massive momentum.”Faf backs Green but flags pressure and expectationsDu Plessis echoed the focus on Green, calling him a “multi-skilled marquee buy” but warning of the pressure that comes with his hefty price tag.“Cameron Green is a highly talented guy… he is a complete package. He balances KKR’s team very well,” Du Plessis said. “But form has not been on his side recently… there is a lot of weight on his shoulders. The team will expect a lot from him.”He also backed the explosive Kiwi pair at the top. “We all saw the carnage they displayed in the T20 World Cup… having both of them open is perfect for the way T20 cricket is played now.”Bowling concerns and spin key to KKR’s successHowever, Du Plessis raised serious concerns about KKR’s bowling depth, especially with injuries affecting key players.“The question mark is their bowling. With the injuries they have, they almost need to pick an experienced player… and bring that required experience into their bowling attack,” he said.He also emphasised the importance of utilising spin duo Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine.“They are two of the best T20 spinners… for KKR to be successful, Varun and Narine need to fire. The pitch should be prepared keeping those two players in mind.”

What if Koneru Humpy skips Women’s Candidates? Fine, replacement, and ‘setback for India’ | Chess News

What if Koneru Humpy skips Women’s Candidates? Fine, replacement, and 'setback for India'

NEW DELHI: The air is still filled with anticipation over whether Koneru Humpy will take part in the upcoming Women’s Candidates, starting March 28 at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Pegeia, Cyprus. While TimesofIndia.com have already confirmed that the other three participants in R Praggnanandhaa, R Vaishali, and Divya Deshmukh will be travelling to Cyprus for the tournament, Humpy on Wednesday once again reiterated her concerns about travelling to Cyprus amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Koneru Humpy Exclusive: Why the Chess legend hasn’t played since World Cup loss

Taking to X, she wrote, “I know that alone, I may not be able to change anything. But regardless of whether I play in the Candidates or not, I felt it was important to express what I genuinely feel.”“I’m truly grateful to everyone who has shown their support. For those who cannot understand the sensitivity of this situation, I choose to leave it at that,” she added. While uncertainty still lingers, Humpy’s potential withdrawal may not just be about missing the Candidates, the only gateway to the World Championship match, but could also have larger financial implications.Section 3.5 of FIDE’s “Regulations for the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026” states that “players who fail to provide a satisfactory reason for withdrawal after they have signed the player’s contract may be imposed a fine of up to ten thousand (10,000) euros”, which is over Rs 10 lakh in Indian currency. However, the final decision on the amount, or whether it should be imposed at all, will be taken by the FIDE Council.Speaking to TOI about Humpy’s concerns, FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky had stated, “We have discussed the issue with Humpy and agreed on a date by which she will make a final decision. It was in good spirit, and FIDE will not comment on the exact date, but it is reasonable and suited both Humpy and ourselves.”It is understood that Humpy’s camp will take a call on whether to travel to Cyprus by next Monday.According to FIDE regulations, Anna Muzychuk of Ukraine will be called up as a replacement if the 38-year-old veteran Grandmaster (GM) does not travel.

Muzychuk, a two-time World Blitz champion and one-time World Rapid champion, will qualify under FIDE’s section 2.2, which states: “If any replacement is needed, the spot shall be awarded to the next yet unqualified player(s) of the ‘FIDE Women’s Events 2024–25’.” Despite being ninth on the leaderboard, Muzychuk stands to benefit as all players above her have already qualified.

A setback for Indian chess?

Humpy qualified for the Women’s Candidates 2026 after finishing runner-up in the 2025 Women’s World Cup. Veteran Grandmaster and coach GM Shyam Sundar Mohanraj, who was head of delegation for the Indian team in Batumi during the World Cup, feels that her withdrawal would be a “setback for Indian chess”.“Definitely, it will be a setback for Indian chess (if she doesn’t go). But at the same time, we just hope that all the conflicts or whatever is happening resolves soon, because till the last moment, we don’t know,” Shyam told this website.“Whatever Humpy felt about participating, it’s her own personal choice… Being there at the FIDE Women’s World Cup, I personally saw the hard work done by all the players, because the tie-break, especially, was mentally and physically exhausting.”Besides Humpy, Vaishali and Divya will be playing in the Women’s Candidates, while Praggnanandhaa will be India’s sole representative in the open section.“They have spent lots of energy, made many sacrifices, and shown great mental toughness to qualify for such an event. It’s a gruelling process,” he further added.ALSO READ: Mother quit job, son scripts history: How Mayank Chakraborty, 16, became Northeast’s 1st GM“Certain things are not in our control, and it looks like other players are also participating. New Delhi: It was Tuesday morning, and the sun was beating down. The facilities of Northern United Football Club in Delhi-NCR were busy. On one side, a group of players were going through warm-up drills. On another, the goalkeepers were being tested with walloping drives. In the middle of the pitch, the coaching staff kept a watchful eye over the proceedings. It was followed by the field being divided into two halves as two different sets of strategies were employed. As the sun grew sharper, the approach shifted to set pieces with the coaches dictating matters.

ISL Highlights: Bengaluru FC vs Sporting Club Delhi

It was no ordinary morning, and it is no ordinary week. Finishing touches were being applied to what is a monumental occasion – a Delhi-based top-level club returning home after a seven-year gap.Delhi once boasted of three clubs in the top two divisions: Delhi Dynamos in the Indian Super League (ISL) and Sudeva Delhi and Delhi FC in the I-League (now called the Indian Football League). Dynamos witnessed an average attendance of over 15,000 in the first ISL season (2014) and had legends such as Alessandro Del Piero and Roberto Carlos in their ranks.Delhi’s tryst with ISL and top-tier football lasted until February 2019 as ahead of 2019-20 season, the club rebranded itself as Odisha FC and shifted its base to Bhubaneswar. The presence of I-League clubs has persisted. The capital city’s seven-year void of first-division football ends on Thursday (March 19) as Sporting Club Delhi, earlier called Hyderabad FC, host Jamshedpur FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. It is an emotional moment for defender Akshat Mehra, who was part of the Dynamos youth setup and is now one of two Delhites in the SC Delhi squad.

“I’m very happy that football is finally back in Delhi after a very long time. Last time it was Delhi Dynamos and thankfully I was a part of it also and now being a part of SC Delhi it’s a great feeling because it’s my home club and I get to represent my city and I’m very happy about it,” said the 19-year-old after the team’s training session in Noida. The magnitude of the occasion is not lost on Akshat, who was part of Delhi’s U-20 national championship-winning side recently. The stage and level of expectation are bigger now. “It’s a great feeling, but also it’s a bigger responsibility, and I feel it’s not going to be easy, but we are prepared for it as a team. If you talk about Delhi, now it’s time for Delhi to step up… there’s no going back from here, and hopefully we do great for the city, and we make all our fans proud,” continued Akshat. The Phoenix, as the club is nicknamed, are hoping that this home stretch proves to be a turnaround in their fortunes. After four matches played in the truncated season, SC Delhi are second from bottom with one draw and three losses — doing only marginally better than Mohammedan Sporting, who are yet to open their account.

SC Delhi vs East Bengal

The season began with a 0-2 loss in Bengaluru, followed by a 1-4 thrashing at the hands of East Bengal, a slender 0-1 defeat against FC Goa before staging a comeback from 0-2 down to force a 2-2 draw against Mumbai City FC for their first points of the season.Having zig-zagged across the country, taking multiple flights — sometimes more than one — this home game comes as a respite after a 10-day gap. It helps that it comes at a time when the team is struggling, and the threat of relegation is ever-so-real.“There is always the additional support, so we are counting on them to come in big numbers. They will be loud in the stadium and they will motivate our players. We say that fans are like the 12th player and we are expecting that, waiting for that,” said coach Tomasz Tchorz.

Coach Tomasz Tchorz on fans

Tchorz has been in India for a while now: with ATK Mohun Bagan and Kerala Blasters – both with strong home connections and a loyal fan base. He hopes Delhi adds to the list for him and JLN Stadium continues to be a venue of miracles.“I think this is challenging but also very interesting especially in a city like Delhi which is (the) capital, which is big and versatile because you have a lot of communities in Delhi. Also, you have foreign people, and our team can represent different communities and unite them,” said the Polish manager.“This is something I would like to do as a coach of the team. Even in our team you can see people from different parts of India. You can also see people from different parts of the world.“With our team, we can unite communities, and we can make a big family which is very rich in different cultures, languages, and religions. We can be as one by football,” he continued.

To draw fans for this momentous occasion, SC Delhi have invited school kids, made tickets free and are collaborating with social media influencers to spread the message. The response has been “overwhelming”, says club CEO Dhruv Sood.“We launched (tickets) Friday night, and we’ve had an overwhelming response so far, above our expectations. The first game is an inaugural offer. The ownership wanted people to see and feel the pulse of ISL and football in Delhi. So, it’s been free of charge for all people who want to attend.“Tickets are still available. We are still trying to put out more because we want young people, we want Delhi people to come and see football.“So, we are trying to get out there, even in this current situation in Indian football, as much as possible. My hope is that we have 10-11,000 people which would be a good number. Hopefully, a lot of them (will be) wearing red and supporting us and hopefully, the team will respond by giving them the first win of the season,” said Sood with a lot of optimism.

'Always fighting': Ab de Villiers explains Virat Kohli's influence in RCB

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore batter AB de Villiers has backed Virat Kohli as a key figure in the franchise, saying his role goes beyond runs and continues to influence the team.RCB will begin their IPL 2026 campaign on March 28 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The team will enter the season after winning their first title last year.

“Virat definitely is still the heartbeat of the franchise. Not only through his performances and the consistency he has achieved with the bat over the years, but also through his presence and the energy he brings to the squad. The way he conducts himself on and off the field, always fighting for the team, stands out. He brings that energy and makes the youngsters believe that they can ultimately go on and win the trophy, which RCB did last year,” de Villiers told JioHotstar, as cited by news agency IANS.De Villiers said the difference last season was the contribution from multiple players instead of relying on a few.“What I liked about last season, yes, he was one of the main run-scorers in the team, as openers usually are, but there were other players who stepped in. In the past, RCB were often guilty of relying on just two, three, or four players performing consistently. This time, I felt the entire team chipped in,” he added.Referring to the IPL 2025 final, where RCB won their first title, he pointed to the role played by others in the batting line-up.“The final is a great example, with Virat scoring 43 runs off 35 balls. But it was actually Patidar, Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma, and Romario Shepherd who scored at a high strike rate and helped the team post 190-plus, ultimately winning the game. Krunal Pandya also chipped in with the ball.”He said the team now has better support around Kohli.“That’s my point, players contributing like that throughout the season, and the bowling attack stepping up. Virat can feel that; he can sense that he is not the only one carrying the load anymore. He has a squad of fighters around him, all gunning to win the trophy. I think they are in a really good place. It’s a similar squad, they didn’t have to change much, and they have good reason to believe they can go all the way again this coming season,” he said.

England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith has said that missing out on the IPL 2026 could help him focus on red-ball cricket, as he prepares for the upcoming Test season at home.Smith, who went unsold in the IPL auction, said he initially wanted to be part of the league but now sees the break as useful ahead of England’s Test summer, which begins against New Zealand in June.

“At the time, I would have definitely liked to have gone (to the IPL). It’s an ambition of mine to strengthen all sides of my game, and I see the IPL as something that can really enhance the white-ball side and does have benefits for the red-ball (game),” Smith said, as cited by“But in hindsight, yeah, it’s fantastic to come here and have a block of red-ball (cricket) behind me. I felt that towards the back end of the summer and into the winter, technically, I felt a little bit out of kilter.“It’s been nice to come here (The Oval) and work on a couple of things, and then I’ll be able to hopefully implement them, for six or seven (County Championship) games, and we’ll see where we get to if there’s any England stuff after that. But, yeah, it’s nice to have a little block to try and get things right,” Smith was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo on Wednesday.Smith had a difficult Ashes series in Australia, scoring 211 runs with one half-century in five Tests as Australia won 4-1. He was later left out of England’s white-ball squads for the tour of Sri Lanka and the Men’s T20 World Cup.Reflecting on the tour, Smith spoke about the physical and mental demands of long Test series.“Mistakes are going to happen. The India series was physically and mentally very tough. It was my first five-Test series.“Also, we were out in the field for 22 out of 25 days or something stupid, and all the Tests lasted (five days). By the end, it was just actual exhaustion: I was just knackered physically and mentally from all that had gone. From there, the learning was how to make sure that from the first to the last game, your standards are still as high as possible,” Smith said.“It was similar in Australia, to be honest. I know a few of the games didn’t last as long as people were expecting or wanting, but again, I don’t feel like my standards were down too much,” he added.

“I quite enjoy my current situation. What I mean is, being a player with an inactive rating, who seldom participates in elite invitationals. I’m enjoying this rare moment of leisure,” he said.Instead of intense preparation, he now prefers casual online games. Explaining his current approach, Ding added: “I keep up playing the occasional game online: it doesn’t require arduous pre-game preparation, just undivided concentration in the moment. The process itself is rewarding.”Ding became world champion in 2023 after defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi, but his reign was followed by a dip in form and eventual defeat. Despite that, he pushed Gukesh to the final game of the 2024 championship before losing.Looking back, Ding shared a personal reflection: “I wish my younger self had studied more and persisted in academics a bit longer, not letting it fall to the wayside. That way, later years of life might be richer. People always dwell on the things they didn’t do (or paths they didn’t take).”For now, Ding appears content stepping away from the spotlight and focusing on a more relaxed relationship with the game.
