Mumbai: The city will be transformed in the next five to seven years, said CM Devendra Fadnavis at a town hall discussion at NSCI Dome in Worli on Monday.Many important projects that will give impetus to east-west and north-south connectivity of Mumbai are going to be completed on a war footing, he said. “All major infrastructure projects currently underway in the city will be completed by 2032 and will decongest Mumbai,” said Fadnavis. The extension of the sea link to Versova-Dahisar-Bhayander, the new link road from Dahisar, free-flow bridges, as well as various tunnel projects will greatly reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai. As currently 60% of Mumbai’s traffic is on Western Express Highway, an alternative will be provided, said Fadnavis. Projects such as tunnels connecting BKC to other areas and a new link road network over the expressway will increase the average speed of travel in the city to a great extent, said the CM, adding that Mumbai will be completely tunnelled. The entire Metro network will be built in the next five years, he asserted. In the Dharavi redevelopment project, 30% of the area will be maintained as green zones, he said. On climate change, he said it is not just a book discussion but a real problem. “…Public transport is one of the biggest causes of pollution. So, efforts are underway to electrify the transport system in Mumbai.” The CM said in the next phase, public transport will be taken towards zero emissions. Highlighting Mumbai’s sewage treatment plants, he said these will ensure that only treated water is discharged into the sea and will be completed by next year. On the BMC polls, Fadnavis said 40% of BJP’s candidates will be aged under 35. He urged the youth to vote and join politics if they desire to see change. BJP, said Fadnavis, will appoint two young people in every civic ward, including those with diverse political views, to monitor work. While constructive criticism is welcome, an anarchist mindset speaks against institutions, he said. “Merely talking about corruption and criminals will not resolve the issue. Young people need to vote and participate in politics so that such people can be replaced.” He said it was a misnomer that there are a high number of criminals in politics as even those who hold agitations and demonstrations are charged under the same law. He said for ideology to survive in a democratic setup, numbers are necessary and for this reason, people with diverse ideologies can come together on common issues.

New labour codes 2025: The government has notified new labour laws that may require companies to ensure basic salary makes up at least 50% of the total cost-to-company (CTC), potentially prompting changes in how pay packets are structured. As a result, for many employees, take-home pay could come down over time as contributions to retirement savings are likely to rise. The government has unified 29 labour-related central laws into four extensive Labour Codes: the Code on Wages (2019), Industrial Relations Code (2020), Code on Social Security (2020), and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSHWC) Code (2020). Starting November 21, 2025, these Codes seek to simplify regulatory compliance, enhance worker safeguards, and modernise India’s workforce regulations in accordance with contemporary economic conditions.

The Code on Wages became operational on Friday, with the government expected to announce detailed rules within the next 45 days. Companies will need to restructure their salary frameworks to comply with these new regulations.

According to Puneet Gupta, partner, People Advisory Services at EY India, the implementation of labour codes could result in increased gratuity payments since calculations will be based on “wages”, encompassing basic salary and all allowances, excluding HRA and conveyance allowance.

A mandatory 14-day strike notice aims to prevent sudden disruptions and includes mass casual leave within the definition of a strike.The codes extend social protections to new categories, requiring aggregators to contribute 1–2% of annual turnover towards gig and platform workers’ social security (capped at 5% of their payments). Fixed-term employees become eligible for gratuity after just one year of continuous service instead of five. The inspector-cum-facilitator system introduces randomised, technology-driven inspections to reduce harassment and improve transparency. Compliance is simplified through digitisation of records, as well as a streamlined one license, one registration, one return system. Employers must issue formal appointment letters detailing job roles, wages, and social security.The codes also expand labour flexibility and reduce burdens on small units. Night shifts for women are permitted in all establishments with their consent and safety measures. Contract labour rules include an all-India licence valid for five years. Factory thresholds have been raised to 20 workers for units using power and 40 for those without, reducing compliance requirements for smaller factories. Finally, working hours remain capped at 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week, with flexible weekly structures allowed through mutual consent.

Its crest features the Urumi, a flexible sword from Kalarippayattu, symbolising agility, precision, and fluid lethality.INS Mahe is the first of eight ships in the class being built by CSL, with the remaining seven scheduled for delivery through 2027. Once fully inducted, the Mahe-class will replace the Navy’s older Abhay-class corvettes, strengthening the anti-submarine warfare grid along the coastline and improving tracking of underwater threats in the littoral zone.
